At a lower price point, they'd get a 3. The good: -Comfy bed (not in the league of hotels at a similar price point, but comfortable. Crisp sheets with a moderate thread count) -really nice housekeeping staff (I stayed two nights, left the "do not disturb" sign and they kindly left me a basket of towels and shampoo outside my door)///my room was clean (my coworker, OTOH, found long hairs on his sheets) -gorgeous lobby with exposed beams and soaring atrium that makes you feel like you're about to enter a rustic chic boutique hotel ...Only, you're not. I'm afraid the bad outweighs the good. The main thing: it really could use one of those hotel makeover guys in here. It's so incredibly outdated. For example, Andes mints left on the pillow and "do not disturb/maid clean room" signs that remind me of being a kid at a Holiday Inn circa 1982. Neither are a really big deal, but it's just to give potential guests an idea. My room on the first floor was dreary. It led right to the street (there's even a glass door to the street that you can't open, but it's still unsettling) and had no natural light, so the room was perpetually depressing. The ceilings have are wood-paneled. The carpet seems old. Each room has what seems to be mismatched old furniture (my room had shabby overstuffed love seat and arm chair, while my coworker's had a pleather couch and a table). The furniture is crammed in there and makes you feel claustrophobic. Don't expect a bathrobe (at this price point, I would) and towels are rough and thin. No mini bar. Not even a bottle of water, which is especially unacceptable, as waking up to a glass of tepid tap water is really not a great way to start the day. You can attempt to get some water in the hospitality room... if anyone fills the water thermos. Then there's the "work out room." Even a carefully placed mirror won't give you the impression that this is anything but a single treadmill, a single elliptical and a small cable weight unit in a florescent- lit closet. There isn't even a water cooler in there. Again, with the lack of accessible water. And a final note: it's family-friendly. Which isn't awesome when you're here for work (picture 6 am screams and shouts echoing around that beautiful atrium lobby). If you can get a room at a good discount, sure, go for it as it's not the worst place in the world. Do. Not. Pay. Their asking price. For that, you should be in a Westin or Omni, not a (barely) glorified La Quinta with a nicer lobby. Staying here should cost one half the price. read more

I arrived Thursday evening and was scheduled to check out on Sunday morning. The first two days were great, and honestly, I would have rated the experience up to Saturday the day before my check as excellent with a 5-Star. My issue is with the parking lot flooring on Saturday around 3 p.m. I noticed that the water was up to the doors on my car and I immediately moved the car to a dryer location. The manager on duty acted like this was no big deal. The front desk did not even attempt to reach guest with vehicles until I inquired about the situation. Though I was scheduled to stay another night, I secured my stuff and departed. The front desk told me that the GM would call me Monday. Today is, Wednesday of the following week and the GM never attempted to call me, so I called her. The only thing she would say is that I departed after the checkout time and that signed the parking waiver. The GM's response to this situation is sad. I plan on visiting Charleston more in the future and had decided that I would make future reservations with Ansonborough Inn. Not now! Future Guest... Beware of the parking it floods! read more

This was my first stay at the Ansonborough Inn and I cannot wait to return!! The hotel is historic and charming, the staff is friendly, the central location makes it easy to access the market, French quarter, and King St., and you can't beat the free wine and cheese happy hour! We loved our first room but had an issue with a baby incessantly crying in the room next to us. We made it through one night and decided to request a new room since we were on vacation. The staff had a new room ready for us within 15 minutes and we were actually upgraded. The experience was incredible!! read more

This was my third visit to the Ansonborough and I have enjoyed each visit. The hotel is in a great location on East Bay in the downtown area of Charleston, a short two block walk away from Market street and about the same distance from Calhoun if you want to venture to the north side. The room was very spacious and clean. It does need some updating. The wallpaper in the bathroom was peeling off, the shower head dribbled water and was not able to have the angle of flow adjusted. I love the lobby and all of the wood exposed to the ceiling. The lobby looks up three floors, which each floor being about 15-20 feet tall. The staff are all nice and very friendly. The 5 oclock wine and cheese social is nice and intimate. They turn the lights down and serve brie, fruits, and other chesses with crackers and wine. Very nice touch. A little updating and some more attention to some of the details could really make this place shine! read more

Arrived yesterday forr a 2 night stay to be greeted by the immediate god awful smell from the grocery store dumpster directly across the street from the hotel entrance. My wife had to hold her nose after almost vomiting..The rank smell was overbearing to say the least. Front desk manager refused our request to check out after our 1st night. Our request 'did not meet their cancellation policy'! Pretty ridiculous!! They did not even offer any type of consideration, free parking or a partial refund.for our very disappointing stay. My wife and I stayed here recently and cannot have enough nice things to say about this place. We arrived very late at night after drive 8+ hours and the person at the front desk was very understanding and got us checked in right away. The rooms are very cool with exposed brick mixed with newer styles. Plus the location of the hotel is only about 5 min walk to market street and the restaurants on Market St. and East Bay Street. Lovely hotel with very nice staff. Our 3rd floor room was very quiet, clean & elegant. The rooftop gathering space was a big plus. We also enjoyed the wine & cheese available in the evening. This hotel is walking distance to anywhere downtown. We were able to head S on a run through parks and historic districts and head N to run the Arthur Ravenel Jr Bridge. If we visit Charleston again we will definitely choose Ansonborough Inn. restaurants within walking distance We recommend eating at 82 Queen for a nice couples lunch, Bay Street Biergarten for a nice brew pub, the Gin Joint for drinks, Fleet Landing for outdoor dining. read more

We booked this hotel last minute. I had searched available rooms on Hotels.com and then filtered by highest guest rating. Ansonbough Inn was fifth on the list, and had a great rate compared to the other top rated hotels. On arrival we were greeted by two great front desk attendants and felt very welcome. We travel with our bikes and asked if we could bring them through the lobby and in to the room. There was no hesitation in allowing this. Later the first evening, we stopped in the hospitality suite, as we came back from dinner, to get hot tea. There was one of the kind we wanted. I went to the front desk and asked. He went in the kitchen and found us another tea. On Christmas night, the hot water urn had cooled when we went for tea. The front desk attendant came through again and got us steaming hot water directly from the coffee brewer in the kitchen. The staff here really seems to enjoy working here and helping their guests. The room itself was huge. A living room and kitchenette area and a separate bedroom can be expected in the Junior rooms. 16' ceilings with exposed heart pine beams and the brick walls bring the history of Charleston inside. The location is convenient to all of downtown Charleston. We barely used our car for the four days we were here. We will certainly return and recommend the Ansonborough Inn to our friends. read more

My husband and I loved our stay here at AI! We did some research and many of the B&B in Charleston are well over $200, but AI was at a reasonable price. We got an upgrade from the King Studio to a Luxury Room since we mentioned we were celebrating out anniversary. The room was very spacious! There was a bar area and living room area with comfy couches and chairs. The bathroom had marble and granite and Bath and Body Works toiletries. It was very clean and comfortable! AI isn't in the heart of Charleston, but a couple of blocks away from the shops and restaurants. There is also a Harris Teeter across from the Inn and Parking is $12 across the street too. We didn't drive anywhere all weekend. The continental breakfast included cereal, bagels, muffins, fruit, oatmeal, along with boiled eggs and mini sausage biscuits. The staff was friendly and the Inn was just lovely. The only negative is that we could hear everything in the room above us. At one point we heard part of someone conversation. Room: I stayed on the ground floor, with a room facing the street, sandwiched between an exit and the exercise room. The street gets a bit noisy at times, and the walls/windows aren't great at buffering the sound. I wasn't a fan of the revolutionary-era decor, but the room itself was very clean and kept up very well. I kept experiencing a natural gas-type smell that would disappear, but I determined that was mainly because I'd get used to it, but noticeable again when I left the room and returned. Hotel: The workout room was essentially non-existent. It has an elliptical, bare-bones weight machine, and a treadmill, tucked into a closet-sized room with a TV. The daily wine and cheese hour was great, and the lobby and food area are very cozy. The staff was very nice and accommodating. Overall, I don't think I'd return for the price, but mainly because I think I'm not a boutique-hotel type person. read more

I'm rounding up from 4.999 stars. We stayed here for my birthday and had an absolutely amazing time! When we got there, we got our room upgraded, which was very nice. Our room had very tall ceilings and the beautiful woodwork seen in the main areas. The breakfast, cookies, and wine and cheese hour made the stay even better. All of the food was delicious. Their pimento cheese is perhaps the best I've ever had. The breakfast was great because it changed daily. So, on a three night stay, we got to try a lot of differ food. Also, check out the rooftop deck! We didn't know about it until our last day, but it is very nice! I spent a lot of time reading there and next to the fireplace in the lobby. Finally, the staff was amazing. These are perhaps the nicest people I've ever been waited on before. They were so kind and accommodating. The one downfall? Well, while our upgrade was appreciated, we where right next to the Harris Teeter loading dock, so we got unwanted wake up beeps every morning. In all, you should definitely stay here, just ask for a room that doesn't face Harris Teeter. read more

Agreed with other reviews that the Ansonborough is at a crossroads. The price point doesn't fit the experience. It either needs to go whole hog, bump up the price and full realize the potential that it has. Or, it can lower the price and continue along as is. But it cannot maintain the status quo. If it does, it can expect a bunch of middling-to-bad reviews and that's not entirely fair to what the hotel has going on. Like I said, there's potential. I arrived at the hotel ready to relax. My flight from Nashville was fine. My trip to the hotel was pleasant (thanks to Maurice from R&S Limo). And, when I showed up at the front door, I was happy with what I saw: lots of brick, lots of plants, sufficient Southern character. Sounds good. I arrived a little later than expected on a hot Friday in mid-summer. I wanted a drink but was nearing the end of the cocktail. So, imagine my happiness when, after greeting me, the front desk offered me TWO glasses of wine so that I could get my check-in on in style. Things are looking up. They got better when I received an upgrade. It seems a couple of their Friday reservations canceled, so I was bumped to room 210. I like. The room itself had a lot of charm: extremely high ceilings, exposed beams, exposed brick, a small living area, a proper wooden desk... all good things. But, the room was only halfway there. The bathroom was serviceable, if not comparable to the first impression of the room. The refrigerator was bare, there was a sink in the corner of the room that didn't seem to go with the aesthetic and (most importantly), my sheets weren't properly laundered. There are few things as first-world-problematic as mealy sheets in an expensive room when you want to lay your head. Even worse, when I called to get new sheets -- that's all I received. I made my own king bed. Now, I am not too good to make my own bed. But, barring being eight years old and having chores to do or needing to impress house guests that I am a fully functioning adult, making the bed isn't something on my usual playlist and it, certainly, isn't something I expect to do when staying at a hotel. So, that was a let down. And the sheets... well, Oprah would not be giving them away as her favorite things any time soon. The doors/walls are fairly thin so if you're a light sleeper or are traveling to be/do the nasty, be warned. That said, I appreciated the historic charm of the hotel and proximity to downtown happenings. Given the outward character, I was surprised (in a good way) with the modern touches of the lobby. The glass elevator is a nice accent. The hotel serves breakfast and has a nice dining area complete with coffee, tea, water, and lemonade. Oh, and cookies. Fresh cookies are always a plus. You see what I'm talking about? Potential. Personally, I think given the ridiculous real estate and price point in Charleston, the Ansonborough just needs to give in to the market, raise the price, fix all the problems, and offer guests the experience they expect to have once they look at the website and do the math. Being stuck in the middle is doing no one (hotel included) any favors. read more

I've stayed here a bunch-- for work and for fun, because it is usually reasonably priced in comparison to other downtown Charleston hotels. Out of season, more reasonably than in-season of course, and a recent long weekend averaged a little over $300/night which included taxes and the $12 parking surcharge. The people who work here are great. The rooms are a bit of a mix of old-timey but classic furniture, mid-century pieces, and desks that do not fit in and look like they came from a flea market. The wireless internet is free. Some of the carpets are really dirty. Finally, be careful-- if you get stuck on the ground floor, whether on the Hasell Street side (which is a bit more quiet) or the East Bay Side (louder than my NYC apartment above freaking Houston Street!), you are in for a bit of a wild ride (lookout Room 115!). These rooms should not be let except for a very deep discount with full disclosure. Shame on the hotel for not taking that tack. The complimentary breakfast and wine/cheese cocktail hour are perfectly adequate. The "workout room" is a bit of a joke-- it has a treadmill and one piece of equipment I have never seen before; however, in nice weather, you can jog to the new bridge -- the base of which is approximately a mile from the door. So, overall an adequate property and despite some quirks, I will definitely stay here again. read more

Horrible experience!! A/C was not working properly...Was offered a fan. Management is PITIFUL. Front desk offered many excuses, "old building", someones chair may have tripped the breaker", maintenance is gone, manager has left for the day. Asst GM was useless. She stood there listened to our conversation at checkout and not once stepped forward to say "Hello I am the Asst GM, how was your stay". AC was only fixed after we notified the front desk that we would be checking out early. When GM returned my call she basically informed me the AC was perfect, we do not know how to work a thermostat, none of her staff gave any of the excuses, there was no reason for the Asst GM to speak to us at checkout because the AC was now working. Shocking these two women were chosen to represent/operate this Inn. DO NOT RECOMMEND and will not stay there again. TWO thumbs down. We've stayed at a different hotel every time we've visited Charleston, and this will be a one and done, too. I wanted to try a new place that was within walking distance to most of historic Charleston, and this place fit the bill. We didn't rent a car this time and it was no problem! In fact, when we wanted to get closer to the Medical University, we went to a bike shop around the corner and rode our bikes over there. The rooms were fine. Very high ceilings and a decent sized room given the historic age of this hotel. I was disappointed that our bathroom wasn't updated as advertised. There was a lot of external noise... we were very close to the docks and it made sleeping in on vacation. The breakfast left a lot to be desired. There was nothing fresh and the grits were instant! Blasphemy! We didn't make the breakfast mistake more than once... every other morning we ate out. The happy hour was fine. The pimento cheese was very good and very Southern. Really, the best thing about this restaurant is it's location. read more

I booked this hotel based on proximity to the cruise terminal for a one-night stay prior to sailing. While the cruise was abysmal, the stay in Charleston at the Ansonborough was impeccable. We kind of wished that the cruise had been canceled so we could just stay there. We had a king room with vaulted ceilings. The space was impressively renovated, with attention paid to the original beam and woodwork. The bathroom was clean with nice hot water (not always the case in even some of the finest hotels). We had exceptional service with a great restaurant recommendation. Check-in and check-out were seamless. Parking was easy, which I gather isn't true for all Charleston hotels. The location was great as well. The only less-than-exceptional points were the continental breakfast (nothing special) and the fitness center. There is no ventilation in the fitness center and only one treadmill and some weights. It was stifling and steamy after only a mile and a half on the treadmill. But then again, I don't think many people go to Charleston to work out in an enclosed space. Use the location to your advantage and run or walk outside, if it's not too warm. Not only would I stay there again, but I'm booking my parents a stay there for their anniversary. read more

My friend and I were very happy with our stay here: clean, well maintained hotel with a lovely staff. The ladies who manage the breakfast area in the mornings are especially sweet. I disagree with reviews saying the hotel needs updating. It's designed to look antique but I thought the upkeep was plenty. Nice rooftop to take your breakfast up to in the morning or cocktails at night. Every evening at 5, they set out wine and cheese for guests and have cookies out throughout the day. I'd definitely recommend this hotel if you're looking for something with more charm and cozier than a large chain hotel. read more

What a perfect place for our girlfriend get-away! There were 6 of us in 2 rooms, plenty of space in one of the "Premium Loft" and a "Double Luxury". The wine and cheese was wonderful, tasty and they didn't mind a bit when we took ours up to the roof terrace. One morning we did yoga on the roof too, a great spot. The decor is beautiful, an old-world feel with plenty of wood beams and paneling. But it's a renovated warehouse so no "old-world" plumbing or electric...Breakfast was more than we expected and the cinnamon buns! We all went off our diets for those. Friendly and helpful staff too. (Thank you Daniel and Carrie.) Tips: Prices are high in Charleston, this Inn was pricey for anywhere else but midrange for Charleston. There is a handy 24 hour big grocery store across the street, we didn't find any other quick place downtown to buy necessities. We didn't hear any noise from it except a trash truck one morning, no biggie considering the convenience. If you can, get a Premium loft! Well worth the minor up-charge. Earthling day spa was great and about a block down the street. Palmetto Carriage with the "Big Red Barn" for the horse carriage tours also is very convenient, just a block away. Liberty square and the aquarium where you catch the boat to tour Fort Sumter is also in easy walking distance, to the north. read more

I had reserved a room for my client to stay at the Ansonbourough during the Cooper River Bridge Run weekend. Now this weekend is probably the biggest weekend for Charleston, so I understand the inflated prices ($800 for 2 nights). My client had a nice stay, but when it came time to leave his appointed early morning cab wasn't there, which made him miss his flight, and turns out they charged HIS credit card instead of mine which was originally placed with the reservation. Not only that, he was charged THREE TIMES! Make that $2,600!!!!!!!!! But wait there is more. I check my account, and I've been charged TWICE! $1600!! The dominoes keep falling. Surely I can speak with the manager and make some sense of this this missed cab ride and quadruple $800 charge... I call the manager and she was very unhelpful and pulled the "I'm just as upset as you" card. Considering how much the rooms were overpriced, there wasn't even a hint of a refund or incentive to return to the Ansonborough. This makes me look VERY bad to my client. I love Charleston and will be back for my wedding next year... but staying FAR away from this place. read more

My husband and I stayed at Ansonborough Inn on June 1st 2012. Our flight got in late, so we didn't show up until 9:30 PM. We had to wait a couple minutes for someone to come to the front desk, which didn't bother us at all. They upgraded us to a larger room, which was room #109. This room was on the main floor right by one of the main streets. I had read another review about this particular room and they mentioned that it was noisy. Yes you could hear some of the outside noise, but it wasn't to the point where it prevented you from sleeping. It would be just like at home. Other things we enjoyed: ~Convenience to all the downtown restaurants, bars and activities (walking distance) ~Decent breakfast with hot and cold foods ~Comfortable bed ~Room was big with a sitting area (not that you spend much time in your room anyway) ~Very helpful & friendly staff, provided ideas for places to eat and gave directions ~We were able to keep our luggage at the hotel after we checked out while we were walking around down town and at the pier. We picked it up later when our ride showed up. Overall we enjoyed the architecture and the fell of the hotel and the staff was wonderful. My wife and I visited Charleston this past Labor day weekend. We stayed at Ansonborough for 2 nights, and it was great. The decor is fantastic, the room we got was very nice and comfortable, the art in the building is great, and the fact that they have an included continental breakfast just tops it off. It's a bit out of the way from all of the main restaurants, but not more than a 15 minute walk from wherever you'd like to go. There's a nice 24 hour grocery store right next to the hotel as well. Rooms were about half the price of comparable hotels closer to the main attractions, but walking an extra 10 or 15 minutes was worth saving the money. It's a beautiful hotel, and the only negatives I can say about it is that the walls are VERY thin, we could hear and understand conversations in the rooms next to and above us. A charming hotel with a wonderful ambiance. The lobby is breathtaking as you enter, with a beautfiul fireplace and high ceilings with exposed beams. The Front Desk and Housekeeing staff were friendly with the perfect amount of Southern Charm. They were always accomodating and had wonderful suggestions regarding the area. The rooms were very comfortable. Breakfast is served every morning in the common area and a complimentary wine and cheese hour was an added bonus. I wish we could have enoyed the lovely roof deck, alas it was rainy the weekend we were there. The hotel is a quick walk to Historic Charleston's main attractions, such as the City Market and Rainbow Row. For late night snacks there is a 24 hour Harris Teeter directly next door. A piece of history in the heart of the city. Went with my girlfriend for a weekend getaway. Staff was friendly and welcomed us with a "Charleston Glass" of wine (read:full). Pace and room were clean, breakfast was no frills but good, and there was coffee or tea available 24/7. Staff offered recommendations that added to our trip. Location is perfect; you can walk or rent a bike to everything but the airport. The place may or may not be haunted depending on who you ask, though we saw no ghosts. Also, there is no lack of random hunting dog pictures on the walls. A touch expensive, so best a place for a short and special occasion. Not sure the next time I'll be in SC, but I know where I'll be staying when I go. Terrific place. read more

We actually called the cops because they were 'hanging out' in the parking lot until almost 3am and we couldn't go to sleep. Shower was not cleaned. There was long black hair and globs of conditioner in the shower. The people in the room above us kept us up late because we could hear everywhere they stepped...and for some strange reason they were walking around a lot! (Old building = very noisy) read more

The most unique hotel I have ever stayed. We had the large loft. So spacious. Amazing double-high brick wall. The inside of the hotel has an open center where you can see all three floors. Great breakfast every morning, cookies all day, and light snack at night. Like being on a concierge floor. Hotel staff are very friendly. read more

The rooms in the Ansonborough Inn are spacious and nice. The vaulted ceilings have to be at least 18 foot ceilings, but I do not really know how high they are. The rooms come equipped with a ceiling fan and their own AC/Heat unit, not that one would ever need heat in South Carolina. The architecture of the rooms, the ceilings, the moldings, and the bed are all very quaint and nice. The bed was comfortable and provided a great place to sleep. In terms of location, the Ansonborough Inn is on the outskirts of the market but fortunately right across the street from a Harris Teeter grocery store - which helps with the purchase of cheap bottled water by the case for your time in the heat in South Carolina. The downsides of the hotel: 1. It's proximity to the port. We could hear the port workers in the early hours of the morning - probably around 6ish - and the persistent beeping of the dock equipment when put in reverse as they transferred goods. 2. It's proximity to Market street outside of the actual market means people can drive faster and do. Plus, because it is on the outskirts, there seemed to be a lot of motorcycles who liked the bar almost directly across the street. 3. The maid service in the hotel did a pretty half-ass job of cleaning our room every single day. We weren't exactly "green" so we always left our towels on the floor - the new universal sign for replace my towels - but they did not. Additionally, they did not clean the bathroom as a whole all that well each day - which makes me question whether my whole room was cleaned. read more
