We drove in, were met by a cute mini rottweiler who came up to greet us, we got some chutney ( it is VERY good) and some incredibly tasty organic apple cider. I love this place and take the chance to stop here for a wonderful bottle of fresh apple juice anytime I head to the coast via Anderson Valley/Philo. Philo Apple Farm is a must visit when you are in the Anderson Valley. They have a self-serve fruit stand with all kind of goodies from the farm. From Hard Cider and juice, numerous fruits, and duck eggs. When you are there make sure you tour the farm and wander around the huge place. They have pigs, sheep, goats and dogs! read more

We had an incredibly relaxing and enjoyable time at the Apple Farm. It was a last minute trip to Anderson Valley for the Alsace festival and we were fortunate enough to be the recipients of a cancellation for a previous guest so we stayed for the weekend. Karen was so hospitable with her morning breakfast delights. We really enjoyed the small cozy feel of the cottages that were beautifully appointed. The claw foot tubs were so nice to soak in, and the french soaps were a nice luxury. Overall if you are looking for somewhere special to stay I highly recommend the Apple Farm. On weekends, Karen has cooking classes. The couple who stayed next door went to the cooking class and really enjoyed it. Their family is the original founders/owners of the French Laundry BTW! And last but not least, they have two dogs, one called Zeke who greeted us the night we checked in late. He is a goofy sweet guy and the animals on the farm just make it that much more enjoyable (especially if you are from the city trying to get away!) read more

We didn't stay there but it was really nice to wonder around the grounds. We got some amazing organic apples, cider and hard cider at pretty reasonable prices from the little farm stand, very good stuff. The hard cider wasn't sweet at all, more like kombucha then a spiked cider you may be used to. You should stop by if you are in the area. They have pigs and goats, etc. You can stay there in the little cabins in the orchard if you want but a little pricey. read more

Great place for young kids and adults! We took our 2.5 year old and newborn to the apple farm last weekend and had an A+ experience. The horses, goats, chickens and dogs will entertain young kids (plus teach them about farming practices). The orchard is beautiful and the cottages are excellent. Breakfast in the morning was delicious. We will go back. read more

I took my family ranging in age from 5 to 75 here for an overnight and a cooking class and we had the most magical experience ever. The farm is so beautifully put together, Karen is such a warm host and patient teacher, and we all made a lovely dinner together and learned many cooking protips in the process. At night we played hide and seek in the orchard with the kids and the cottages were so comfortable and well appointed with hospitable little details. It's such a lovely spot that I am already trying to find another excuse to go back. Such a special place! read more

We stopped by on a Sunday afternoon after camping with our daughter at Hendy Woods next door. Such a lovely space but strange, snooty, and pretentious energy. Their self service stand is neat, if you can pay $14 for a jar of jam. It is definitely a shabby chic place for well to do folk. I opened the lobby door to inquire about a brochure and a cook there quickly came to me, ushered me out, and said, take a business card from outside, I have to close the door as you are letting out the AC. Wow! sorry! I work in the food business and was instantly turned off by her energy. The clincher was the hard cider they bottle in their cutesy farmstand was horrible. We cracked it open and I immediately decided it is best for cooking. Made a decent sauce for my roasted chicken. wanted so bad to love this place as a client of mine told me how great the owner was. However this place unfortunately carries an air of entitlement that was a huge turn off to our family. read more

Just returned from a wedding at the Apple Farm. The grounds are nice. The cottages are cute . (although very expensive). It's not all that. The owner Karen and her staff were so rude. I felt like I was bothering them by being there. I did not see anyone on the staff smile the entire 3 days. The bride and groom spent a lot of money to have there wedding there. They obviously do not like doing weddings. If they are going to continue I would suggest hiring a separate staff. read more

My wife and I recently hosted 105 of our closest friends and family at The Philo Apple Farm to celebrate our wedding. There is not an adequate supply of superlatives to describe how terrific the weekend was. During the planning phase we visited the property a couple of times and had some informal meetings with Karen and her amazing staff. They made us feel so comfortable and secure in the fact that every little detail would be cared for. We are "food people" and after hearing Karen's story and her vision we immediately knew we had chosen wisely. And in turn we were thrilled that they had chosen us to be one of the few weddings they do each season. Upon our arrival on the wedding weekend the farm was buzzing with activity as the staff diligently prepared the farm for our special day. Ariel and I, along with our wedding party stayed in the 4 beautifully appointed cabins on the property while our remaining guests stayed at the sister property, The Boonville Hotel and throughout the valley at many beautiful rental homes. We awoke on Saturday morning to an amazing spread of baked goods, chutneys and jams along with house-made granola and fruit all prepared by the peerless Cruz. Their casual elegance and grace along with a "you're family" kind of vibe really made us feel at home. Rita was hard at work making the gorgeous flower arrangements, along with the bridal bouquets and some striking boutineers, spiked with hops, all coming from the property. The ceremony was held among stately trees brimming with the season's bounty of apples. The guests were greeted on the hot day with sparkling apple drinks and took respite in the shade of the beautiful orchard. When the ceremony was complete we chose to take Karen's recommendation and indulge in the Farm's famous "Roving Feast". There was no formal seating, just a progressive meal and lots of mixing and mingling of the guests. Everybody raved, not just about the format, but about the bounty of food and amazing flavors that seemed to not stop for several hours. Even the kids were catered to with amazing bites and plenty of animals to interact with on the property (the goats were a huge hit). The incredible evening morphed into a lively dance party, with Tim and Jersey making easy work of the cocktails and wine, and I would be ashamed if I failed to mention the unimaginable array of apple-spice cakes that the utterly talented Courtney put together. Simply amazing! All in all, the day was a smashing success. Many of our guests said it was the best wedding they had ever been to. But, it didn't end there. On Sunday, at the farewell brunch, Karen wowed the crowd yet again with farm-fresh frittatas, her famous biscuits, and a handful of other delectables that helped ease any residual soreness from the previous night. We lingered as long as we could soaking in all the beauty and were sent off by all the family and staff sporting huge smiles. I simply can't say enough good things about this place and we will be returning often to relive our wedding day and to catch up with "old friends". Do yourself a favor, if you get to Anderson Valley, carve out some time to visit this charming place! read more

stopped by the farm for a bit just to check it out and walk the grounds. we were immediately greeted by an friendly elderly gentleman, who told us a little about the place. he welcomed us to purchase some jams or juice at their self-serve "store," told us which cottages were open to look in, and showed us the kitchen where they make all their products AND hold cooking classes. the cottages were super cute, big bedrooms and cool bathrooms. the kitchen was really beautiful and cozy. the land was also lovely, full of apple trees, of course. this is a family-run working farm! read more

Having met the owner, Karen Bates, a few years ago a visit to the farm was high on my list of places to visit in Northern CA. Unfortunately it took me a while to get there but having just spent the night at the Farm, I can say it was totally worth the wait. We decided to take one of Karen's mid-week cooking classes and stay overnight. It's a wonderful place to unwind and Karen knows soooo much about food and is an excellent teacher. The grounds are lovely, the produce which we used to make our lunch was amazing and the whole experience is one everyone should have. The cabins are all very comfortable and slightly different in their very colorful and tasteful decor. Our cabin had an outdoor shower and, while somewhat daunting at 7.30 am, the water was perfectly warm and it was very invigorating. Can't say enough about this wonderful spot or Karen and her team! Already looking forward to our next visit. KdV read more
