The Black Dog Tavern was one of our brunch stops while visiting Martha's Vineyard, and we went to the Vineyard Haven location right on the harbor. We ordered the Charley on the Fence omelette--bacon, onion, mushroom, and cheese--and didn't leave a crumb. The Green Monster was also amazing, packed with asparagus, broccoli, spinach, and cheese. Of course we had to add the buttermilk pancakes with strawberries and blueberries, which rounded everything out perfectly. It's your classic brunch spot--nothing overly complicated or trying too hard--but the food is just really good. Solid portions, great breakfast options, and a nice waterfront setting. I've been to this restaurant at least a dozen times in the past decade, and if I had written this review any other year I would have given it 4 stars. But unfortunately, this last visit in September was terrible! There is a new smaller menu (with a lot of cutesy names.) They serve breakfast & brunch from morning to afternoon, so a lot of the lunch type items seem to be gone. My mug of chowder was delicious, but came with a few layers of croutons (they were good, but it definitely took down the amount of soup in the mug!) My Cobb salad was fine, good blue cheese and bacon, a scoop of guacamole, but not my favorite lettuce. Sort of the spikey kind. I had the dressing on the side, and I thought it was fine. My husband didn't like it at all. Our friend enjoyed her Greek salad. She asked about the steak tips, and the server was not very enthusiastic saying they weren't marinated. She appreciated the heads up and got chicken instead. But my husband's hamburger was terrible!! It tasted so weird, and when we tried JUST the meat, I swear it was spoiled. Tasted sour and I couldn't get the taste out of my mouth for an hour, it had a lot of stuff on it...guacamole, tomato, lettuce, cheese, bacon. The roll also felt a little stale. We did inform our server, and he was very apologetic. I'm just happy my husband didn't get sick from the few bites he had. The fries were good, but not hot. Went here after docking at the Marina. The service was very friendly and quick getting the drinks and the food. The Tavern had a nice courtyard area with shops and an area for playing Corn Hole. We sat at the bar with a wide screen TV. Would be nice if they had som live music. Maybe they do on the weekends. read more

Four stars based truly on its claim to fame which was indeed the best clam chowder that I have ever had! We ate outside and shared some apps and drinks. I think it may have been the servers first day though as she seemed very overwhelmed and forgot to bring us our drinks and mixed up our food order with someone elses. Absolutely awful! Yesterday I decided to go there on my Birthday alone for breakfast. When I finally got to my seat, my waitress took my order and brought me a black coffee and water, with no cream. I had to ask A busboy for that and he noticed I had no utensils either. I ordered the eggs Benedict with has. They brought me poached eggs on hash. No hollandaise sauce. Had to wait for THAT. The waitress never came back. In fact she left the property altogether! All the tables in her section were left unattended. Total nightmare. They comped me my meal, but the manager had the nerve to try to tell me that "there was no need to be loud and obnoxious." Actually, THERE WAS! This is exactly the situation where it is very appropriate to be loud and obnoxious! I've been going there for 30 plus years and this was absolutely unacceptable! I announced it to as many people that were waiting to go in, on my way out as possible! I didn't need the free meal or want it. I just wanted good service and acceptable food. This was neither! The owners don't care because they have a monopoly in that town, Vineyard Haven and there's nowhere else to go. It's sad that this kinda thing goes on here. Really great views AND food here! I loved the lobster roll, which was packed with lobster and had a perfectly toasted delicious bun. The fries that came with it were so good, and the coleslaw was refreshing. My sister had the herb panko cod. It was buttery and delicious on a bed of mashed potatoes and spinach. The calamari here was also perfectly fried so we thoroughly enjoyed the food. The two glasses of wine we ordered were not great so we didn't finish them, but everything else was wonderful, including the service. We used to bring all of our island guests to the Black Dog for breakfast. The food was equivalent to a very good diner breakfast, and the building itself has lots of character and sits right on the water. But over the last couple of years, the quality of the food has shifted closer to a Denny's, IHOP, or similar chain more focused on banging out volume vs quality. Fine, but nothing special. Art Cliff is the place to go nearby if you can manage to squeeze in, along with several other better options in downtown Vineyard Haven. read more

The restaurant is on Beach Street along with other Black Dog stores and we found good close parking. All 6 of us enjoyed our breakfasts. My wife and I split a Happy Heff egg breakfast along with a fresh fruit bowl and we both liked it. Others in our party also enjoyed their breakfasts. Olive was our server and she has a good sense of humor and made sure everything was okay, coming back to the table a couple times. After I was sat down and was brought a cup of coffee and I put in my order then my wait person did not come back for over 45 minutes. I sat with an empty cup of coffee and empty water. I saw the table next to me cancel their order and leave. I understand it was pretty busy but it would have been nice if they would have at least stopped by to refill my coffee and water and possibly apologize for the wait. We went for breakfast expecting a good meal served by friendly knowledgable waitstaff. I clearly asked if I could get my omelette cooked to my preference. She assured me it would not be a problem. The coffee arrived and it was hot and delicious. We ordered a fruit bowl, which was fresh and abundant. when my omelette and my husband's Eggs Benny arrived, they were overcooked and inedible. My waitress did not check on the food or even appear until I told the person who delivered the eggs there was a problem. She went to ask the cook. The cook said it couldn't be done. I ordered pancakes instead and left 10 minutes later because I still hadn't been served, nor had anyone apologized to us. Iconic tavern on the island. Overall food and drinks are ok and not mind blowing. But you come here for the vibes and the service is decent and you can tell they are actually trying. What to say? The view is great, and so is the ambience (if you can handle the cold), but I wouldn't recommend this place for actually eating. Or drinking, for that matter. We ordered 2 vodka peach canned cocktails, which were not in stock. Instead, we were offered what was supposed to be an alternative to those, but ended up just tasting like iced tea that had maybe been stored next to some peach schnapps. We ordered another cocktail that looked like lemonade when it came out, but after we found 3 bugs in it and asked for a replacement, we got one that was bright orange and completely different than the first. Oh, and it also had a bug in it. In addition, we were offered a "pitcher of water" for the table, which was actually a $9 bottle of Acqua Panna. The cocktails were later comped. On the food end, the Chicken Tenders were good, and so were the Tavern Burger and the Barbecue Wings. The Power Bowl was just okay. We got 2 sides of Mac and Cheese, both of which came out cold. Once we were able to tell our server, the chef came out to speak with us. He was not apologetic at all. After questioning ME on why the food that came out of HIS kitchen was cold, he offered to replace them. We'd had enough and just wanted to be done, so he comped the Mac and Cheeses. Also, right before we left, we were told that they'd forgotten to bring out the house bread for us when we arrived. We didn't know that it'd been left behind, so I feel like that detail should've been left out because it just pointed out another error in our experience. Based on other reviews, it seems like we lucked out with our server, Ema. Although there was an incident when receiving our drinks in which a (weak) cocktail was spilled all over a member of our party, Ema was apologetic, sincere, and attentive overall. Hands down the best Mac and cheese with buffalo chicken I have ever had. Mac and cheese was cooked perfectly and tasted fresh while buffalo chicken was adequately flavorful. My family and I have come to The Black Dog for breakfast for over 20 years. The last few years, we leave a little more disappointed than the year before. It's always hit or miss. We had plans to go to Art Cliff, but it was closed so we went to The Black Dog. We were seated right away. I ordered an iced coffee, but was never offered any milk or cream when our drinks were brought to the table. When our food came, my daughter's French toast was raw in the middle. They took it back and made her a new one, meanwhile my son ordered pancakes but was never given maple syrup. When they brought over the new French toast, we asked for syrup. The waitress brought over this ginormous glass bottle of syrup, where all other tables were given the standard cup of syrup. My husband ordered eggs benny and it came with toast. He was given 1 small piece of toast. My eggs came with toast and I received the typical 2 large pieces of sourdough that were cut in half. We were told that the French toast would be discounted. Well this place sure looks different in the light of day for brunch in the summer season! Clearly we needed to polish our review for the Black Dog Tavern up after the god awful experience we had here last week. The *one* good thing that happened is that we were sat right away at an amazing table in the back right of the restaurant where our view was the beach and there was a breeze coming through. So pleasant. Everything else afterwards sucked. Iced coffee? Same garbage method that they use at the cafe of pouring hot coffee over ice. It tasted like dirt. We had to ask for a straw several times. Our elderly waitress was mostly absent the entire time that we were there. It's not like the food itself was very good when it finally (FINALLY!) came out after we were ostensibly aging in place. The two egg dishes (green monster and the huff) we each got were drowning in butter; home fries were OK. The "world famous pancakes" that our daughter got ($3 up charge for chocolate chips, which ended up being a handful just scattered on top LOL) were run-of-the-mill at best. One of us was supposed to get a side of fruit and it came out 10 minutes after all of the other dishes. No surprise that it took forever for us to get the bill. All we have to say is that it's very nice that our friends treated us because this review would have been a lot more negative than it already is.
