I used to love this place but it has gone down hill fast. The wife and I went to get some beef link poboy sandwiches. We grabbed our tray and went sliding down to order our sandwiches. When I saw little roaches crawling by my tray. Then I saw another one on top of the sneeze shield above the beans and cobbler. It almost fell into the beans. My heart sunk. I had loved the food here for so long and now I am completely and suddenly disgusted. We left and have not been back since. I can't make myself go back. The owner seems to be a nice guy but it obviously did not faze him a bit. The health inspector said that they have proof that they have sprayed for roaches but somehow he let this business stay open. We recently visited Nacogdoches, Texas, the oldest city. Well, we decided to go to the Barbeque House, which is the oldest restaurant in Nacogdoches. Big mistake!! We should have walked out when they said they were out of the ribs, but we went ahead and got their 2 meat plate with potato salad and cold slaw. Potato salad and cold slaw was ok, but the meat was not. It was warm not hot and just didn't taste good. I got the banana pudding and when i went to eat it, it looked like day old pudding, turning brown and looked bad. Told the girl about it and she asked me if I wanted another, which I said no. I walk in and smell the smoke from the BBQ pit. I get excited, thinking if you can smell the smoke the food has to be good. WRONG. I ordered a brisket sandwich. It was covered in BBQ sauce. The kid cutting the meat put on more seasoning. If the meat is already seasoned, why would you need to add more. The service was fantastic. The food was not very good at all. The brisket had no smoke flavor at all. My kid ordered a 1/2 a chicken. It was bland as well. The sauce was tart and not very flavorful. The potato salad tasted ok. The Cajun rice was pretty good. It did taste like it came from a box and not homemade, like I expected. To whomever thinks this is the "Best BBQ houses in the south", needs to have their tastebuds examined. The Barbecue House is our Sunday restaurant. We go there regularly after church every Sunday. We request "lean meat only" and they do accommodate our preference. The food is delicious and there are ample servings. There's a variety of tasty sides, yummy baked beans, dirty rice, potato salad, coke slaw and Mac and cheese. YUM. I grew up eating here every Sunday when it used to be in the old North Street building. I have such fond memories of sitting on the counter to watch them make my chopped beef sandwich...oh, and the old fashioned glass bottles of Sunkist were so much fun! I moved out of Nac about seven years ago, but every time I return (and I mean EVERY time), I make a point to stop by and get some barbecue from the Barbeque House. The brisket is SO delicious (probably thanks to that well seasoned smoker out back), the sides are generous, and the people behind the counter are incredibly pleasant. The building may be a little more modern than the old one, but the BBQ is just as delicious. I always go for a chopped brisket sandwich (smothered in their delicious bbq sauce) and a side of baked beans. If you want bbq in Nac--eat here--you will NOT be disappointed. read more

I've eaten here twice now and have only good things to say. I walked in expecting a sit down BBQ place, but it's more of a cafeteria style. This means you get your food quickly, but the food isn't made to order. The ribs are good, but not fantastic. They've only got one BBQ sauce which they put over everything. I recommend the beef and link combo, it's beef brisket and sausage links covered with their BBQ sauce. It was very good and reasonably priced. They also have a selection of sides to choose from, the only one that's worth getting in my opinion is their baked beans, they've got bits of pork in them and are freaking FANTASTIC! Price wise, it seems pretty reasonable for quick barbecue, I think dishes are around $9-$12 each, and sides are a few dollars more. If I'm in Nacogdoches again I'll definitely come back. read more

Walked in with an empty stomach and with the prospect of sinking our teeth into a delicious rack of ribs, we were actually quite disappointed with what was presented in front of us. But as they said, when in Texas, so we struggled through our brisket and ribs. Maybe because it was a Sunday evening that the place was very quite or business is simply not doing that well at all. The lady behind the counter said the restaurant has been around for a while but have only been in the location for several years. They have interesting items hanging on the walls. If I could give this place zero stars I would! This place is simply disgusting! The beef and link is usually days old, trust me I know my nephew works there. He tells me stories were they see roaches in the food and they have pet friendly rats running around in the back. The owner simply doesn't care at all, as he usually pays the health inspector to pass every year. The only people who go there are boomers who have lost their taste in food and locals who have never tried real bbq food in their life. The food is also over priced for the quality of it. The staff is filled with friendly college students who simply serve up the food. The poor kids are only making $7.25 and with no option of tip! Stopped here while I was passing through. I wish I could give this establishment more than a mediocre rating. Plenty of parking plus cattle trailers and cop cars made it seem promising, but I started to have an uneasy feeling when I walked in and saw several microwaves behind the counter. I will admit that I am a bbq snob. I've cooked in several cook offs and have eaten brisket and ribs my entire life with my very large family. Therefore, I was appalled when the brisket was pulled out from a warming pan pre sliced and pre sauced. No bbq should ever be pre sauced - it is a way to cover up bad cooking. I had to ask for plain brisket which had no good smoke ring, flavor, or cut-with-a-fork tenderness. The only other item I had was the potato salad which were more akin to cold mashed potatoes flavored with some paprika. Nothing that really wowed me and I have had store bought potato salad with more flavor. I give it 2 stars because it does seem like a decent hangout for local law enforcement and I like any place that supports them. Really good BBQ and usually very nice people working. I rarely have time to go in which means that I go through the drive thru often. It has been an extremely long wait in the drive thru the last 3-4 times I've visited, and on multiple occasions parts of my orders have been forgotten even after waiting for so long. They sauce their bbq. And not just lightly sauce it...it's DROWNING in sauce. My boyfriend and I got the brisket and the sausage. Brisket wasn't anything special. Not awful, not great. The sausage, though...wow. There's no way they make their sausage in house. It's almost certainly store bought, and not good at all. But I've had they're rib eye poboy before, and it's pretty good. One of the most foul places I have been to eat in a very long time. We went by here on our way back home to Austin, the worst $33 I have spent in a long time. I would like my money back and was VERY surprised a refund was not already offered after having to point out TWICE that there were bugs in and near the food and beverages. If cockroaches are this obviously out in the open, I can only imagine how terrible the rest of the place it. I can't imagine how this place stays open, if there were negative stars ~ I'd give them. I saw cockroaches in two separate areas of this place, one on the buffet line as they were getting our food and another larger one on the drink counter. I pointed it out to the guy behind the counter, he casually knocked it off onto the floor and stepped on it. He was not the slightest bit surprised or apologetic. Our rubbery, nasty 'bbq' and sauce were both heated up in a FILTHY microwave (which prominently sits right on the front counter), the sides were flavorless, mushy and terrible. I ordered pulled pork, it was actually chopped up chunks of fatty, gristly ham, drowning in a horrible supposed to be bbq sauce. As we sat to eat, there were what appeared to be two hair or hair type items in the beans. The 'sausage po boy' my son ordered was actually more like a chopped up hot dog, dosed in their terrible sauce, hacked up and placed on stale bread. I've loved the food for years, but tonight was disappointing. We called to see when the restaurant was closing, were told 8:30, then drove over getting there at 8 and told they were closed.
