Chicken fried steak excellent. Lots of fluffy mashed potatoes with gravy-yum-wish I was back there again. We ate in the bar area. We were able to walk there from our hotel. This restaurant was actually recommended by the receptionist at our hotel. The service was very good. The waitress was friendly, even though she was very busy. If you are coming bbq, this ISN'T it We almost walked out as soon as we walked in. Dining room looks like it was thrown together yesterday, and there was no one there. I ordered ribs. They are NOT bbq'd. My guess is they were boiled, then reheated in the broiler or salimander, they were dry and tasteless. Bbq sauce helped some. Salad was good, ice tea ok. Wife got fish and chips that she liked. Just stay away from anything "barbequed" at the Barbecue. read more

Me and my family came in here expecting a nice,friendly,and calm experience.When we first sat down the waitress came up to us and gave the water cups and menus.We were looking at the foods and talking amongst each other. Not more then five minutes later the waitress came up to us to fill up cups with water and take our order.When we told her we weren't ready she put her table of paper on the table and took a step back and walked off. Very, very disappointing experience. My buddy and i needed to kill time before a tattoo appointment, so we hit up the BBQ. Probably around 7 customers in the entire building, so we figured it'll be perfect. 30 minutes in and out. Well, after ordering a simple bacon cheeseburger and a chicken quesadilla, it took 40 minutes just to get the food. 3 workers in the kitchen. The burger had no bacon, and it was another 10 minutes to get that on there. The chicken in his quesadilla was very dry as well as the cheese being cold and hard already. He ordered onion rings as a side and got 5. 5 medium sized onion rings. My tater tots were mostly connected together. The patty was extremely dry and charred and I asked for MR to M. All in all pretty embarassing. They claimed it was cause they're busy, and when I slowly looked around the now mostly empty room, she changed to saying its mostly all new trainees. The waitress was nice but not aware of food allergies (I am gluten and dairy intolerant.). Would have suspected that there would have been more BBQ options on the menu. Only ribs. Stopped in. Big mistake. Slow service never received our salads. Chicken fried steak was ok. The vegtables were not warm enough. My friends rib eye was horrendous, he had me try a bite and the taste ruined the rest of my meal. Asked if they would take off for not receiving our salads, management acted like it was our fault for their inadequate service and nasty food. Never again. I had a cheese omelet and hash browns while one person (8 years old) had the french toast and one a BLT. We all came away satisfied. Good omelet I thought, as good as the ones I like at Cousins. The front portion is the restaurant & it's in need of remodeling. The back end is the bar, really a sports bar and it's really nice & new; maybe the best of its kind in The Dalles. Kind of a weird I guess. It looks like the place began as a restaurant and realized the bar as a sports bar was where the real $ is at. I'll come back to try the prime rib, if I don't bring any kids I'll sit in the nice sports bar and order. read more

My search for the perfect chicken fried steak in the Gorge ended right here. It is the closest facsimile to my beloved home states premier cowboy cuisine. The cut was big, the steak was tender and well seasoned. The gravy was thick and flavorful. The sides were delicious and plentiful. Our waitress was even named Billie Jo (can't get much more Texas than than that) and I highly recommend her. Her service was prompt and excellent. She is definitely at the pinnacle of her profession in terms of attitude, skill and hospitality. The Barbeque is a top notch dining experience and my family and I can't wait to return. read more

We had supper here and the service was horrible from the very beginning, the interior definately needs updating. The ribeye and prime rib was excellent and at an affordable price once we got it. The veggies were canned overcooked. We were in hopes the bad service was a fluke so we went back a second time. Service was just as bad as we're the veggies. And the salad dressings were watered down. It took almost an hour to get our food. Husbands Chicken Fried Steak was delicious but my BBQ Beef sandwich was so tough I could hardly chew it. Heard they had good steaks and the sign said Monday was steak night. The interior is pretty lacking and could use updating for sure, but the service was wonderful and friendly and the food was really good. We ordered a fried prawn appetizer that was fantastic! The special was an 8 oz sirloin with choice of potato, vegetable and garlic toast. It was a lot of food and we shared it. The side dish was green beans (canned) with onions and lots of bacon, very tasty, down home cooking. Ended with strawberry cheesecake which was ok but not remarkable. We were pleasantly surprised and will be back for the prawns and to try ribs next time. The prices are really amazing, I've never had a steak dinner for $10.50. read more

Good breakfast spot. Sit in the bar as it is much more roomy and some sporting event is always on the several flat screens. I consider myself somewhat of a Bloody Mary connoisseur and they are better than most. The ham and eggs is always a sure bet and I always order the home fries never the hashbrowns. I am a disabled Viet Nam vet who moved to The Dalles a few month ago after retiring as a certified teacher. I sometimes have stopped in to BBQ and enjoyed their breakfast. Prices were great and food was fine. The decor in this restaurant was dated and needs improvement. The locals are great and I have spent a few times having a beer and sandwich. Annie has always been good at taking care of customers in an adequate time periood. I came in one afternoon and waited for over ten minutes to order. It wasn't Annie but the waitress was on the phone and told customers to wait. I waited and told her to provide a BLT and beer. She seemed unhappy and not corrigible with customers. I finished my meal and waited for the bar tender to return to the room and again waited to pay my bill. After waiting again for ten minutes or more I had to leave and told the other customers I was leaving and left money and a tip for the bar. Money was on the bar next to my plate and glass. I came in on a Saturday morning to have breakfast and there was no one to sit my friend and I at a table. The tables were not cleared and more than ten people were waiting for someone to sit us for for five minutes. No one, no one was taking care of the money from paying customers. I sat a table with dishes on them and waited for someone to take care of us. When the person showed at our table, the first thing she said in front of everyone in the room was, "Glad you came back in because you didn't pay your bill the other day". Nice way to start off a morning in a place that used to be fun to share with others. She mentioned that she had to pay my bill. No evidence, no reason to accuse me of anything but embarrassed me in front of my friend. All because there was no one in the bar to take my credit card. read more

Met up with some friends for breakfast. Waitress noticed us after 15mins or so of waiting. All of us ordered the chicken fried steak and eggs with minor variations. Steak wasn't too bad, gravy was very flour tasting under cover of pepper. Eggs were stiff and I asked my friend how the home fried potatoes were...unlike the hashbrowns on my plate that I had not ordered. We went to The Barbeque for our 15th Anniversary because last time we were there we loved the baby back ribs and prime rib. Our salads were followed by a swarm of fruit flies that we were waving out of our faces most of the evening. Our entrees took 20+ minutes to arrive at the table (all was precooked except maybe the veggies and Texas toast). As the waitress approached, we could see a 6-8" piece of hair hanging off one of the plates. The food was cold, including the baked potato, ribs and prime rib. :( read more

I can't tell you about the food. I didn't even get that far. On the outside, the place looked tidy, sorta retro 60's cute, and didn't have a creepy vibe at all. When we went inside, it was like we walked into the alleyway of a David Lynch movie set where even David Lynch got too creeped out to film there. It was VERY dark, with a dark green & white "country" motif from 1982. Nothing had changed since that point forward. There was one couple in the place other than us, and they looked to be in their 90's. The place smelled like a grease trap smothered in grease, and then fried in some grease with some burnt grease on it, and then hosed down with six bottles of bleach. It was unbearably unappetizing, and was turning my stomach enough it was felt in the back of my throat (you may think I'm exaggerating, but I'm not). We were seated at a ripped vinyl booth that had been badly duct taped roughly 3 times and still had tears in it. The table was sticky and the plastic menus we were handed were, of course, greasy. So it was at that point, we just stood up and left. There was literally nothing more we could take. The Barbecue would have to burn to the ground and be rebuilt as an entirely new restaurant before I would ever step inside again. I'm sorry, but it's the honest to God truth. read more
