Outstanding BBQ in a location (in the shadow of the north face of Mt Hood) where it really doesn't need to be! Taking a different way home from the way we started the Hood River Fruit Loop meant we needed to find some place new to eat lunch. Checking yelp (of course!), we discovered this BBQ place in Parkdale. Apple Valley BBQ sits on the main drag through town making it easy to find with street parking readily available. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They offer outdoor seating, which was a must for us since we had a dog with us and it was too warm on this PNW fall day to leave her in the car. Seating outside is at picnic tables and there are also dog water dishes available.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The food was wonderful! I ordered enough to take home for dinner later - the BBQ Plate consists of 1/4 rack of ribs, pulled pork, and 2 sides - I chose pear coleslaw and baked beans. My tip for the meat? Mix the two BBQ sauces together on your food - so good! The coleslaw had chunks of fresh pear in it and was delicious. All of my food was perfectly cooked, perfectly mixed, perfectly served. We were camping at the nearby Toll Bridge campground and were informed by the locals that we had to try the Apple Valley BBQ in Parkdale. The town only has a population of 300, but all the locals must have lunch at Apple Valley. We stopped in and my wife had the Prime Rib Chilli, and her favorite here, the Pulled Pork Quesadilla. I went with the Ribs and Pulled Pork plate with Baked Beans and a Pear Coleslaw. The meat was a deceptive amount, we had trouble finishing the tasty offerings, but I loved the Pear Coleslaw. It had just the right amount of sweetness and crunch. We really enjoyed Apple Valley and the town of Park dale, OR and will be returning soon for another visit! read more

My relatives and I tried this place for lunch on 8/31/2025 on hearing that it was the best BBQ place in the area. To be honest, I found the food quality to be very sub-par. I ordered the BBQ Plate that came with 1/4 rack of baby back ribs, pulled pork, and added the tri-tip for an additional $10. For my sides, I ordered the BBQ beans and coleslaw. * The ribs were extremely overcooked (blackened so as to be unrecognizable) and the meat was too tough. Even using the provided steak knife to separate the ribs was a challenge. When done correctly, ribs should be tender and ready to fall off the bone. * The pulled pork was very dry. I had to use some of the table BBQ sauce to add moisture and flavor, but I shouldn't have had to. * The tri-tip was thinly sliced and overly drenched in way too much BBQ sauce. * The side of baked beans were overly sweetened, and again, drenched in too much BBQ sauce. * The coleslaw was fine. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Service was fine and the establishment seemed sufficiently clean (except for all the flies buzzing around inside).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Management doesn't allow pets inside, but do allow them in their outdoor seating area.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Overall, I was pretty disappointed with my food experience here, considering what I'd heard about them being the best BBQ place in the area. Every sandwich comes with a side and we both chose the fries. Had I known their fries are more like potato chips, I would have ordered a different side. Solid 3.5 We took a drive to Hood River and decided to try something different off the beaten path. Cute little BBQ spot with a few tables available for outdoor dining (pups are ok) We sat inside this afternoon because it was on the warmer side. Hubby ordered the BBQ dinner combo plate with brisket, pulled pork and ribs. Everything we ordered did need the extra sauce to give it flavor. They offer sweet and spicy housemade BBq sauces. I ordered the BBQ beef sandwich piled high with Tri-tip. The smoke flavor was good , not too strong on all the meats. The garlic Parmesan fries were really tasty and the bbq beans were just ok. As with most reviews here, we were doing a leisurely cruise around the Fruit Loop and found Apple Valley BBQ by happy accident. Me, being a confirmed barbecue snob was game to try a new place. Besides, my Wife told me we had to. I am a harsh critic of barbecue, whether it is out of my own pits in my backyard or from a restaurant. So for me to be offering five stars for a barbecue place is pretty good. The Wife had the pulled pork plate while I went with the ribs. Both had great color, were moist, and had good smoke flavor. The sides were very good, we had mac & cheese, mac salad, beans and cole slaw. What really made the meal was the atmosphere, it was welcoming and you had your choice of seating inside or out. The restrooms were well decorated and clean. The staff cared about the experience their diners were having and it showed. This will not be a standard stop on future fruit loop excursions. read more

Apple Valley BBQ ended up being one of our best stops when driving the Hood River fruit loop. We were on our way back to Portland and super starving and didn't have a plan in mind. We noticed people heading in to Apple Valley and followed, they were still serving and we were seated within minutes! Super nice and efficient server and our food was out within minutes. Excellent quality BBQ with many different sauces on the table! Also homemade baked beans, coleslaw and corn bread sides. Nice! read more

Thank you to my friend Stephan for introducing me to this place. This is the perfect place for a hearty lunch after hiking, padding or apple picking in the area. The servings are ample (as evidenced by every pair of people sharing a plate) and everything I tried was delicious. The consensus from our party: The meatless meatloaf was good, but the smoked meatloaf is supposed to be even better. Pulled pork was better than ribs. Cole slaw was classic, crisp and a delicious counterpoint to the meat. The baked beans were basic, good but nothing special. The green beans looked amazing and we regretted we couldn't get them. Really great service and the employees all seemed to get along well with each other and customers. That was really really nice to see and made me feel very comfortable while eating here. I'm giving a relatively low rating because what I ordered didn't really have much flavor, and I thought for $10 the pulled pork quesadilla would have more bulk to it. It was really small and had hardly any meat or anything other than cheese. When I asked if they had hot sauce my server replied no, but they did have jalapenos, which I was charged 50 cents for. I'm sorry but I'm so over restaurants charing for this piddly stuff. It was like 7 jalepenos out of a jar. The garlic parmesan fries were incredible!! Sadly, my lunch was a disappointment. Thinking that a prime rib sandwich was cut in bite size pieces, I was surprised to see the prime rib as whole. The offering of utensils was wooden and I was not able to cut into the meat at all. The juice provided with the sandwich was not flavorful. The corn bread salad was interesting, but could have used more than red onion. Willing to give them another try when they have their smoked meatloaf available. Another great experience on a recent dinner here. First off, the staff were really friendly. After learning they were unfortunately out of a number of things, I opted to split a pulled pork sandwich with my wife, my 7 y/o got a kids pulled pork sandwich (loved it, it was 75% the size of an adult size, and he ate the whole thing), and our daughter got the beef brisket sandwich for kids (she thought the meat was too tough so I ate that for her). While driving the Fruit Loop in Hood River, I happened upon this BBQ place in downtown Parkdale - the downtown is about 2 blocks long! There are picnic tables out front which would be awesome on a warmer day or summer night, butt since it was chilly, I opted for a table inside. It was about 4:00 on a Friday so I was late for lunch but early for dinner and had the place to myself. For an hour. At 5:00, there was a mad rush of families and not a table free! The waiter told me it's even busier between 6-7:00. There were a few couples out in Hood River for the weekend, but the majority were locals, families with kids, which is saying a lot. The BBQ brings them back again and again Since it was my first time here, and I wanted to sample a few things, I chose the BBQ dinner. It came with a rack of 3-4 ribs, pulled pork and two sides. Had to go with cornbread as it seems illegal to have BBQ without it! Not normally a coleslaw person but since theirs had the addition of pears, I felt compelled to try it. Since I was tasting ciders all day, I went for their hard apple on tap. It was ok, tasted more like a flavored beer than a cider. Since I had just had a Pear Lemon cider at The Gorge Whitehouse, the best cider ever, anything would pale in comparision. Food arrived quickly, starting with a small complimentary salad (or soup of the day.) the salad was baby's lettuce (points for not serving iceberg), cucumbers, carrots, and I chose balsamic dressing. Very basic, but good. For the dinner portion, everything came piled nicely on one plate with butter and honey on the side for the cornbread. They smoke the ribs with a dry rub, but for those like me who like a little wet sauce, they have a sweet and a spicy sauce in the table. I opted for spicy which was very mild. The rib meat came off easy leaving a perfectly clean bone. The brisket was also perfectly cooked, lots of crisp parts mixed with tender morsels of succulent meat. The cornbread was two flat muffins and they were delicious, light with a hint of sweet, with a crisp top. Perfect compliment to the meat. The coleslaw had a sweetness due to the addition of the pears. The bowl it came in was very cold because they probably plate the sides ahead of time. I bring this up because the slaw never had a chance to hit room temperature so that the flavors were challenging to detect. It was actually too cold to eat, if that makes sense. This bbq dinner could easily be for two, and with a price of $18, that's a good deal. I brought half the meat home, along with one cornbread muffin and the coleslaw. Had it the next day for lunch letting the coleslaw hit room temperature, and it was fabulous. Waitstaff was friendly and very helpful when I asked questions about the menu, like what is a cornbread salad? It's like cornbread stuffing but no egg, with a bit of mayo to hold the cornbread and red peppers together. My waiter highly recommended the meatloaf saying it melted in your mouth and was full of flavor, and I see that other Yelpers have said the same. Since it was a BBQ place, I felt obligated to get actual BBQ. Next time I'm going for the meatloaf with a side of that cornbread salad! Oh, and I will leave room for dessert as the slices of fruit pies arriving at the other tables looked yummy. read more

Great day trip from Portland for snow and good BBQ! I had the half chicken which was amazing. Smokey and juicy. Wife and daughter had the pulled pork and said it was ok on its own but once you added some of their sauce it was very good. My boy had a burger called the danger zone! This place was recommended to us for dinner, we thought it was a cute place and it was one of only two place to get dinner in town. The smoked prime rib sounded like a great idea. We were told it was smoked all day. It was very disappointing, it didn't have any smoke flavoring at all. The people were really nice and they had good service. Amazing customer service, AND I happened to go back in again a few days later and they remembered me (and what I had ordered!) Something about that brings a smile to my face, and I will definitely be back. There are vegetarian options (meatless loaf), and the mac and cheese is pretty darn good. Portions are generous, and the prices are completely reasonable. If you like BBQ (the meat kind) I think you'll enjoy this place as well. Perfect spot for quick delicious BBQ along the Mt Hood fruit loop. My family split three trays and numerous sides and the food both came quickly and was Delicious (and we're from North Carolina where people are picky about BBQ). I also have a peanut and shellfish allergy and I didn't have to worry one bit about issues because they didn't have those items in store. *This place got saved to my "Top All Time" bookmark collection.* Everything was fantastic. Great eating area, service was fast and waitress was friendly. Food came out hot. Like too hot to eat. I burned my tongue. And I mean that in a good way, not that it was overcooked, but it clearly went right from the grill to the plate to our table within a few seconds. Meatloaf was A+. Great mix of tastes (as there are a few ingredients interacting, meat isn't all the same). The dinners include *2* sides AND a salad. HUGE amount of food total. Garlic fries and mac n cheese were A+ as well. Salad was a perfect starter. I recommend the bacon sauce. And to top it off the fresh fruit slice of pie was scrumptious. And gone in about 10 seconds. I traded a few of my fries for a couple bites of cornbread and a spoonfull of beans that one of my tablemates ordered, and those were both good as well. I was full for about 2 days after eating here. For the amount of food you get this place is an incredible deal. We will be stopping every time we are within 50 miles of this place. read more
