Oh my gosh I was so surprised, I have tasted a lot of different chicken fried steaks and Barrel House was over the top. Friendly waitstaff kept our drinks filled and checked on us. What more to ask for if you're seeking a wide spectrum of steak, seafood, and traditional items for every palette imaginable. While the atmosphere is wide open providing spacious seating, the comfort of seeing so many happy families dining was joyous. Since this is my first trip to the new restaurant from the same folks that brought you the Iguana Grill off of 620, the 4* rating reflects what I could reasonably provide. Let's get to food. The pull pork nachos, soft pretzel (huge worth splitting), and chips:queso were excellent starters. I do want to try their fried pimento cheese balls the next time. All great. For salad, I tried their Da Bomb with Turkey which was a bit of disappointment since it had scant cuts of Turkey deli meat. Feedback to this salad is to never ever use deli meat in a salad. Try streak, shrimp, or chicken. I also recommend higher quality fresh cheese like mozzarella or goat but the bomb had inexpensive grated Colby. I would also recommend glazed walnuts and berries but it didn't have either. For entree, I really want to come back and try their gumbo and e'toufee but decided on the sirloin which was cooked to medium. They also have several steak sauces included chimmichurri and hollondaise. Drinks were great. Recommendation. The service can slow down on the weekend when they get busy. read more

Imagine being on your way home from a weekend getaway and just wanting to grab a bite. The rule of ours is when on a road trip, no chain restaurants. We love discovering new places to us. After a great weekend in Fredericksburg, we find the Barrel House. The southern cuisine on the sign sold it even before we sat down. I'm a big fan of Cajun and creole cooking. We started with the fried boudin balls and gator bites, both were excellent fried to perfection with just a hint spicy bite. I had the chicken fried steak with eggs and hash browns. Steak was tender enough to cut with a fork, and was on point. Cynthia had the breakfast burger which she said was cooked to perfection as well as crispy along the edges. A great meal along with great service which allowed us to get back on the road and headed home with full stomachs. We went in we were seated inside and told one of the servers would be by soon. We waited for at least 25 mins , the place was not busy. A large group came in about 10 mins after us and the servers went right over both of the ones on the floor but they never even stopped by to apologize for our wait after about 25 minutes. We came at lunch time which was nice and uncrowded. "Generous" chicken fried steak would be an overstatement. It was good, as was the mashed potatoes and gravy, but definitely left me wanting. The service was good. My wife had da bomb salad which was good and sufficient. The restaurant was a large open room with tables and the decor was nice, way too cold for us but others seemed fine. Not what it used to be . Stopped for lunch on Monday and we were the first people in the restaurant, they asked if we had eaten there on Monday and we said no She said the food was great . So I asked if they still had gluten free buns for their burgers and she said yes so I ordered the elk burger but they were out . So I ordered the bison but w the toppings like the elk burger. We also ordered shrimp tacos . 30 minutes went by and waitress apologies for the wait and we waited another 15-20 minutes and they brought out sandwich bread w burger meat and onions ( no cheese ) and mayo . I asked why it had bread and not the gluten free buns and she said sorry they were out , she should have told me they didn't have buns but they still charged $22 for their burgers meat and sandwich bread . Excellent dining experience! Nice atmosphere not too loud. We arrived early, 5ish, so we beat the crowd. By the time we left it was getting crowded. I had the fiesta salad and it was delish but the best part was the side of Brussel sprouts! They were absolutely amazing !! Don't miss out on these if you are a lover of Brussel sprouts! We loved this place so much we came back for lunch the next day. Super fast. Friendly and helpful staff. Indoor and patio seating. TVs in the bar area. The menu had a great variety of choices. Dinner was spicy pulled pork nachos covered in queso, pico, and jalapeños... OMG .. Yum!!!! The appetizer was big enough for dinner. I had a hamburger with gouda and aoli.. the meat was cooked perfectly .. medium and juicy. The bun stayed together through the last bite! It was one of the most flavorful hamburgers I have had in years. We had a Mexican martini and a margarita.. ok ... nothing to write home about like the food. Lunch the next day was chicken fried steak, brussel sprouts, pasta salad, and loaded French fries to start. The fries were covered in the saw mill gravy, queso, and bacon. The Brussel sprouts were cooked perfectly (not bitter) and served with a sweet sauce. The chicken fried steak was super tender and very crispy. The saw mill gravy was just the right thickness with lots of pepper and herbs. My only negative was too much salt in the coating. This site was within walking distance of our hotel. read more

Stumbled on this place just nearby the Llano River bridge where the level of the river is dammed (if I can call it that). Kinda cool looking as we went over the bridge upon our Barrel House full-bellied departure. It had sounded like there were some interesting menu offerings, as I was copiloting our rented '24 Jeep Wagoneer while reading the reviews and other web information aloud to my wife while she pilots. Llano is one of our favorite towns encountered throughout this trip. The lunchtime crowd (popular office place) grew swiftly and shortly just after our arrival. We were seated by the owner as he helped us feel at home and explained things a bit. We shared the good but slightly awkward handling Ham and Gruyère Melt with fries. I also had reluctantly ordered an "obviously Californian" beer that almost no Californian would pass on, a Dogfish Head IPA. Just after it arrived, I wish that bottle had said Lonestar. I walked through the stage/honky tonk barn area to the men's bathroom that has something that perhaps no longer exists in California; yup, the trough style urinal. The thing feared by all little boys. Still scares me. I got lucky and didn't have to dummy up next to someone. When asking the owner about an upcoming entertainment list for the stage area, he said that was a work in progress and mentioned two upcoming events in the short future. I found the same two events on the web somewhere. For the owner, I have someone who may be able to help with entertainment from Nashville. You could do some damage with that barn area. I want to start off by saying that our server was a sweetheart and did an outstanding job. However, the kitchen needs to be whipped into shape, pronto. We (myself and 2 kids 6 & 8) came for dinner service on 11/22 at 6:15pm. We sat in the patio area, a nice venue with live music. We started off with chips and queso, and the some of the chips were stale and over seasoned and the queso was lukewarm at best. We ate 1/3 of it. We ordered our meals, both kids having the Mac and Cheese with Chicken tenders, and I ordered a ribeye medium rare, but before my server walked away, changed it to rare because I was fearful it would be overcooked. My steak came with a loaded baked potato (undercooked and pretty hard to eat) as well as a house salad that showed up when my steak arrived. I don't know about you, but I prefer not to eat my salad while my steak gets cold. It should have come prior to my entree. When my steak arrived, it was cooked med-medium well. I sent it back. While waiting for my 2nd steak to come out, my daughter complained that her Mac and Cheese was spicy. I tasted it and it was. It was on the kids menu, so that was confusing. The chicken tenders were so over cooked, my kids didn't even eat them. I didn't even mention it to our server at this point, because she was super sweet and accommodating, and I felt bad for her. We just wanted to pay the check and get the hell out of there. Our tab came to $83 dollars and I left her a $40 tip because I felt sorry that she had to defend such a total miss by the kitchen. Super disappointing experience. Do better, back of house. You owe it to the people that sign your paycheck and the front of house team that has to defend your food. read more

Such an awesome spot in Llano- we were in town for a music festival and stopped by. The staff was all amazingly friendly and super sweet to our puppy. The food was 10/10- we got salads and added on great beer and cocktails. Definitely recommend coming here if you're in town or passing through at all. We will be back! read more

Only open 2 months as of Nov 2023 and it's amazing! Just what Llano needed!! Recommend starting with the Roasted Brussel Sprouts. Yummy! Great patio area with fireplace, stage, dance area, great granite bar and indoor area for the hotter days.... perfect for Texans. Saturday night great country music. Let's cut to the chase! Bravo to the chef!! The NY strip was savory in Bleu Cheese butter and done exactly to order.The Fiesta burger is about the best burger ever. Not kidding! Great toasted specialty bun with 2 layers of beef all the fixings and seasoned fries!!! Great for a party, family time, date night or just come sit by the fire and chill. Service is above par. Such a wonderful experience! We were passing through and the Barrel House got good reviews and did not disappoint. It was Friday night and pretty full, some with very large families and get this, it was not too loud!! We were even sitting under a speaker with a low music playing. The waitress was very friendly, efficient and helpful. We ordered chicken fried steak and a smashburger. My husband said it was the best chicken fried steak he had ever had - tender, not overcooked and yummy gravy. Didn't even get to the potatoes because it was so big! Smashburger was also generous, with double patty, cheese and grilled onions. Ate half and was full. The bathrooms are outside where the band was playing. I was impressed by the band who had obviously been playing together a very long time. All in all very much worth the trip. Next time I may even try the fresh fish options. Since the chef has left and the kitchen staff changed, Barrell House has really disappointed. Not only has the menu downsized substantially, they've discontinued the meals they were best at! To be fair, it has always been a little overpriced. But in a small town with limited options, you pay up. In the past though the food was worth the extra coinage. Not now. For example: to add pre shredded cheese to a $20 SALAD will cost you $3. Want bacon crumbles? $4. Craziness. This lunch visit we ordered a salad, which to be honest, was good as far as salads go, Rosemary potatoes and margarita. After almost 15 minutes of placing our order the waitress came out and informed us they have no Rosemary potatoes. No problem. I ordered mashed instead. Meanwhile the salad comes out. Yummy. Then the potatoes. How do you mess up mashed potatoes? By serving day old rewarmed dried up mashed potatoes, that's how. Ew. The margarita as well was gross. It tasted as if they dumped the salt directly into it. Could not drink it. The service was poor especially considering there were two servers and only four tables. We waited and waited for our food. Waited and waited for the check. Well Over an hour there and never offered refills on our empty waters which were served with lemon instead of the requested lime. Just all in all a very disappointing visit especially since it used to be so good! read more

I would truly like to thank the poor planning of Barrel House for ruining our very rare date night. For the past month we had screenshots of the oysters Barrel House posted on their facebook and we were excited on spending a good $250 on this dining experience. Options anywhere in the area are extremely limited for those who have more expensive taste and appreciate creative dishes and respectable atmospheres and this is why we chose this establishment. We got dressed up with a floor length dress and slacks and drove QUITE a ways to arrive around 7:30 on a Friday night. We happily arrived to a chalkboard sign that had OYSTERS as the featured item. After sitting with our menu for about ten minutes our server then told us they didn't have any when we ordered. I laughed and told him this is the reason we came here and he responded that another couple left for the same reason and that he was sure we could find something else we would like on the menu. We sat with them menu trying to deal with the issue and find a positive mindset. When the server returned we began to order again and lo and behold- they were out of more of the items we were ordering. "I could just probably tell you all of the food we don't have and then could order easier that way." It was insanely frustrating and quite ridiculous. My partner asked if Barrel House always ran things this way and the servers response was that they were down a server, a cook didn't show up and the owners were in Port Aransas. So what is the excuse though for the unpreparedness? Why are the owners of a fairly new restaurant vacationing in Port A during the weekend?? How does a server down compromise the availability of your menu items?? Why didn't the server just greet us with hi my name is _____ and unfortunately tonight we are out of _________. How hard is it to be on top of a restaurant in a tiny town? Needless to say we agreed our food wouldn't even taste good at this point and I don't care to fund such a disorganized restaurant by settling on food I wasn't planning on eating in the first place. (If they even had it.) We left $12 on the table for our drinks and suggested they remove the chalkboard sign as well. Good luck to your success. read more

New place in Llano that couldn't have come at a better time. From my understanding, one founder is a native of Llano. Service was great; we sat outside on the patio. Drinks were on point; the spritzer is great for an aperitif and the old fashioned (both variations!) were perfectly executed. We did a family style dinner, ordering the chicken fried steak, redfish pontchartrain, and shrimp n' grits. Set it in the middle and the four of us devoured- and were perfectly satiated. We started with the chips n' queso- which is a white made-in-house bomb of deliciousness. We'll be back, and back often. Well done! read more

Stopped on our way to Horseshoe Bend. The burgers are excellent here, had some deviled eggs for an appetizer. They had a special on fish and chips that was on par with other places. One word...WOW! Visiting in town and went on a Friday night, not real busy got to sit outside and watch a storm approach. Met the sweet owner who made you feel like you were the only guest in the place. The food was unbelievable. Ordered fried pimento cheese, mahi mahi tacos, BHB hamburger (best hamburger ever in my 73 years) and cheesecake. Every dish was fantastic, even the leftovers the next day. Llano's best restaurant by far. Seared ahi tuna, boudin, chicken fried steak, sopapilla cheesecake, peach cobbler are amazing. Excellent wine list includes surprisingly complex local choices. I love the Old Fashioned and Grandioso margarita. Only disappointments: fish (other than the tuna) is usually overcooked and dry, and they don't serve bread or rolls, so I don't order steaks (other than the sprawling CFS). Incredible soups. Pricey, but I don't know where you can get food this good for less. read more

This was my first visit to this restaurant, great ambiance inside the building that claims to be a Cajun restaurant-but I didn't see much actual "Cajun" food on the brunch menu beyond Gumbo and boudin-maybe because it was the brunch menu? Lots of sandwiches, salads and burgers. The server was great and attentive and checked on us regularly. My friend ordered a sandwich/fries and I ordered a shrimp Cobb salad (I was told the shrimp was the way to go because it was the large shrimp they used in their Bloody Mary - it wasn't at all but 4 regular shrimps (the shrimp was seasoned nicely, I just wish there had been a few more to make this $16 salad seem worthwhile), 3 small slices of avocado that wasn't fresh, no bacon, no egg, etc. if you're going to charge that much, you should really make it a Cobb or call it sometime else? 1.5 hours later we finally get our food. We were told that quite a few orders came in at the same time-but seriously a sandwich and salad shouldn't take that long. We were approached by 3 different people asking us how our food was. And when we said that it took a long time-were told again about too many orders at one time. But honestly, would have expected a discount. Would have been a good way to keep a customer happy. Can't say that I will return (sadly since I believe there is a lot of potential here) they have some things they should work out. read more

We loved this place so much! They were all so sweet. We happened to have our dog with us that night after hiking all day at Enchanted Rock, and we're planning on leaving them in the car with it running. But they absolutely would not stand for it because they love to see dogs so much. So many people came by just to say hi to my dog, she even got a pup cup! They're not just dog, friendly, their dog obsessed. Everybody was so insanely sweet here. I cannot emphasize that enough. We never had to wait for absolutely anything. They had live music, which was amazing. The ambience was perfection. The food was astounding. And just everything was top-tier. We will absolutely come back to support this gem of a restaurant. The servers were so wonderfully friendly here. Even the chef stopped by on a Saturday night to see how we were enjoying our food. Ambiance is great for a weekend town; and decor is cleverly elegant on a budget. Customers seemed to be ordering hamburgers. We had the fried shrimp; can't go wrong. The food: Baked potato heavily oiled and wrapped in foil that trapped all the moisture in the russet, which was developed for dry heat cooking, was not fluffy but too oily and the texture ruined by their baking method. My advice, bake those potatoes properly and use any leftover for a great soup to add to their menu. Brussels sprouts were described as crispy roasted. They were a blob that was seemingly served withs stirred in mayonnaise (maybe aioli) I suggest cut those sprouts in half, bread and fry them and serve with that mayonnaise sauce on the side. Boudin balls were too big and not enough cajun ingredients. Maybe turn them in to arancini with a piece of mozzarella in the center? Make them smaller and add more of whatever boudin is known for to the inside. read more
