One of the taco spots in Rodeo 72; usually I'm here when most stores are closed but since they were open I tried them out. There's a kiosk to self-order, I ended up talking to the cashier anyways since there was no line. The ambiance is that of Rodeo 72, otherwise the storefront here is white and clean and nondescript. Tacos de canasta - soft, steamy, juicy, oily, and tasty. I got one of each (potato, chicharron, and beans), which were well seasoned and moist. Birria Mexican burrito - delicious. Maybe I have a small sample size but among the better birria I've tried lately, the meat is tender and juicy and falls apart without any weird stinginess. Comes with consommé which itself is super flavorful and doesn't feel like just oily, muddy meat juice. Salsas - pleasantly spicy, the tomatillo is my favorite. Maybe my experience was different from others since the food court wasn't busy at all. But I'll be coming back regularly when I'm in the area. read more

Visited Rodeo79 with my bf. It was our first time coming by since we very rarely go to Whittier. Tacos were calling for me, so I opted for The Basket Taco. I ordered the tacos dorado with asada for myself. Service was good and standard, so I have no complaints about it. I got notified via text instead of a buzzer. You have an option between frijoles or papas as your base. I went with potatoes. The tacos themselves were good. It was basically loaded potato tacos where they top it with meat. The confusing thing was the "tomato sauce" that they use. I have no reference for what the sauce was supposed to be, but it reminded me more of a salsa and it was too wet for my liking. The tacos already came with salsa, so I didn't think the tomato sauce was needed. Didn't really add much to my food other than drenching it more with the fixings that were already included. I was hyped to see a someone selling birria at the rodeo 72 place. The person at the register was very kind, attentive and efficient. I could tell he had a lot to do but still managed to get to everyone. There's a small area to sit right next to this particular spot, we chose to sit outside since the table was full. The food itself was definitely my only issue:/ The birria definitely lacked flavor but was a very good texture. I thought the consomé would help but man was that thing sooo salty. The salty consomé was a 0/10 and the grilled cheese with birria was a 4/10. I wouldn't go back to this place but hey the ambience here is nice. Def needed some cilantro and cebolla with it too. The ambience is great because of the location they are located in, which i think is the only reason why they receive customers other wise i dont think this business would even exist. I has got to be the worst food i have ever had, dont ever dare and say you are authentic because you are far from it, nothing in that place is authentic all the food was disgusting. Very disappointed we drove 2.5 hrs because their advertising on social media was exceptional. Which i actually give them 5 stars on that, but its deceiving and building clientele upon that. Not going to lie. I was reluctant about the food. Most Mexican restaurants don't do it for me bc lack of flavor. However, this place was really good. Stopped to get some tortas ahogadas, but apparently they were out around 4pm. So we ordered the tacos de canasta. I could have made better papas and just reheat a tortilla and added salsa which is what they did. Those are NOT tacos de canasta, they're tacos de papa with salsa. My mom got the carne en su jugo and apparently that was very good and well served. My mom asked what it had before she ordered since it's made different depending on where you're from. My and family and I were at a farmers market in Uptown Whittier when we came across The Basket Taco Co. For $10 you can get a plate of 5 soft shell tacos. The specific style of these tacos are called "tacos de canasta". Which basically means they are steamed and placed in a basket. They come out so soft! The choices of fillings were bean, pork, potato, and chorizo x potato. We tried all of them and my favorite was the chorizo x potato. The tacos come with a nice amount of toppings and sauces. The taco shells are topped with what I think is cotija cheese. Can't wait to enjoy these tacos again real soon!$ read more

I didn't even know it was possible to make such terrible tacos. I ordered a chicken and carnitas taco for $4.49 each. The tortillas were like blue hard leather and were not edible. The meat was dry, crusty and very salty. The spoonful of beans on the taco was the only thing that was edible. No condiments were available or offered. Unfortunately, my experience at The Basket Taco Co. was disappointing. As a first-time customer, I found the ordering process confusing due to the unique way they serve their tacos -- the hard shell is closed with potato inside, while the meat and toppings are placed on top of the shell rather than inside. This style isn't clearly explained on the menu or depicted accurately in the photos, so I had a few questions while ordering. When I tried to ask for mixed toppings, the male employee helping me made me feel very unintelligent for not already knowing how their process worked. Instead of being patient or helpful, he seemed frustrated and ended up passing me off to someone else. During our interaction, he was also on his phone while wearing gloves, eating candy, and leaning against the wall in a way that felt very unprofessional. The second employee, a woman, was slightly more helpful, but I still felt uncomfortable -- like I was being judged for not understanding their system. I realize that for regular customers, their topping style might seem normal, but for someone new, it was confusing and not well-explained. Later, when I needed a second plate because the one provided was soaked through with juices, I also asked for salsa. The original male employee handed me the green salsa without a word, didn't acknowledge my "thank you," and just stared. There was no language barrier, so the lack of courtesy felt unnecessary. Overall, this wasn't a welcoming experience for a first-time visitor. This place was pretty gross. Ordered tacos de canasta. They were not fried at all, just soggy single corn tortillas. Was really difficult to eat. Small tacos and not much filling. The flavor itself was odd and they all tasted the same despite being beans, potato and Chicharron. 5 for 15 is pretty overpriced and I was still hungry afterward so luckily I went to get some spring rolls and was saved there.
