Celebrated my mother's birthday today with my family at one of our favorite restaurants here in Uptown Whittier, and once again, we had a great experience! The food is always amazing. They start you off with fresh chips and salsa, and they're so good you'll want to order a second round before your food even arrives! My mom and I both decided to try their summer special, the Enchiladas de Camarón, and they were delicious. The portions were generous, and we definitely had plenty to eat. The service was also excellent. Our server Ericka was very kind and attentive, making sure our orders came out correctly and checking in to see if we needed anything else throughout our meal. I also really enjoy the atmosphere here. I've visited on Fridays when they have live mariachis, which makes the experience even better. We actually celebrated my grandmother's birthday here last year as well, and that was another memorable family celebration. This has become a special restaurant for my family, and it's a place we continue coming back to for birthdays and other occasions. Great food, great service, and a wonderful atmosphere. My husband and I are heading home after a very satisfying late night dinner at our local favorite restaurant in Whittier. Whatever time we go- breakfast, lunch, or dinner- the servers are ALWAYS friendly and fabulous! Tonight happens to be Mother's Day weekend. There were lots of big groups/parties but it didn't feel like we had to wait that long for our server to get our order to our table. What made it even more memorable was the Mariachi band playing in the background. The food was again fantastic and very satisfying! We had a big bowl of fideo, a tacos papas, shrimp ceviche and the special calabacita entree. That last item was surprisingly homey and delicious! read more

To start, the complimentary chips and salsa was warm to the touch and with a delicate balance of spice and heat. Don't ask me how I ended up in Whittier, half the places I end up idk how. Anyway! I saw their menu first. Pork belly tacos! Say less! I went after an appt for lunch. Easy parking, not a lot of ppl at the time. I was promptly greeted and sat. Chips and salsa. Yum!!! I ordered the tacos, arroz verde and mocktail number 9. The salsa looked ferocious but she was legit. Flavorful, not a hard kick. I had to pace myself. The tacos y arroz came out together. Beautifully plated. I felt the spice but tried to deny it. 2nd bite and I couldn't. I couldn't eat them. The meat itself was hot. Marco and Octavio took care of me. SO patient and kind. I hate wasting food but also hate paying for something I can't eat. I explained and apparently it's kind of common. I was offered a remake wo the aioli. Sure. Sadly still no. The meat was just too hot. I went with a carnitas taco. The meat didn't do it for me but I could eat it, so I did. Some carnitas tastes gamey. This one did to me. That being said. I LOVED the mocktail! Not me pullin tamarind out of the bottom, cleaning them to the pit! It was so creative and unique. Well worth the price tag. The rice was also yummy. Service on point. Stopped by Bizarra Capital after church and it was such a comforting, delicious experience. I had the fideo soup, which was excellent--simple, cozy, and very much reminiscent of home cooking. I loved being able to choose my own toppings, and the noodles were perfectly cooked and flavorful. We also ordered the chilaquiles, which were absolutely delicious--well-balanced, satisfying, and clearly made with care. To drink, the mango agua fresca was refreshing and naturally sweet, and the café de olla was warm, aromatic, and one of the best I've had. I've also been here for dinner, and the vibe completely transforms with live mariachi, making it a fun, lively spot for an evening out as well. The pork belly tacos were great as usual but the past few times we've been here the guacamole has been drenched with lime juice. It is too overpowering and ruins the guacamole. Our first time here.Actually my Son recommended this place. As soon as you walk in ( elegant, clean and the ambiance is so calming) I have to say customer service is 10/10! I've been coming here for over 10 years and its one of my favorite spots in Uptown Whittier. Its classy, the food is upscale, perfect for a date or a group. We hosted my sister and her boyfriend's birthday lunch this past Sunday. Everyone loved their food. The pescado ceviche is my favorite ceviche from anywhere! It is so fresh and flavorful. My sister had the ceviche mixto and she loved it. We shared a bunch of tacos including pork belly, potato, and the queso tacos. I adore the queso tacos. They are so simple but so full of flavor. The fried potato, cheese, and avocado are the perfect combination on the thick corn tortilla. I also love the hard shell potato tacos. They have an upscale twist on the classic kind you grew up eating as kid. The frijoles are amazing. My grandpa and I shared the regular frijoles de la olla. The rest of the group had the frijoles charros, which I was told have a nice kick. The house salsa is drinkably delicious. It's the best salsa around. As for the drinks, I prefer whatever is the Agua fresca for the day, and I add a shot of rum to it. My husband loves the guava daiquiri. I hadn't been to Bizarra in a few years. They've remodeled the indoor seating and removed the outdoor patio that they out up during Covid. The dining area looks spacious and upscale. It was lunchtime, and I was pleased to see two familiar servers working there. I have to say that the food and service were as good or better than I remember. I enjoyed a delicious cucumber lime agua fresca, an asada taco and shared calabacitas with my girlfriend who had a taco de papa. The salsa is still unique and delicious, and the chips fresh and crisp. The house made tortillas used for the tacos are perfectly soft and flavorful. I was extremely happy that we chose Bizarra for lunch today. I'll be back soon! read more

During my pregnancy I was there often because I craved their octopus dish all the time. The service is always friendly and thoughtful. This is my go to place for Carne asada, Cochinita Pibil sopes, and their Chef's shrimp bowl (found on their appetizer menu). Food is consistently delicious with authentic Mexican flavors. I found this spot randomly on Yelp while husband & I were walking down uptown Whittier. We walked in & the place wasn't packed so we got seated right away. Place wasn't huge but spacious. Ambiance was a bit old. I noticed there were only 2 servers & the older man seemed to be the main server handling the bartending side & delivering the food. I give props for the old man who served us. He was friendly & you could tell he is passionate about his job. Food was served in bigger than expected portions & tasted authentic & delicious. We tried the ahi tuna crudo which was fresh & had a unique flavor that I've never had before. The ingredients in the dish balanced well together. The guac tasted homemade. The chimichangas were flavorful! The meat was so tender & the outside layer was soft & not crispy like we had expected. The fish in the taco was a bit bland but tasted healthy. The corn tortilla was different but good. The complimentary chips & salsa were good esp the salsa was addicting. We'd definitely would like to come back for dinner in the near future. read more

Wow! I'm so glad to have been introduced to this establishment. My boss and I came here for lunch and he's been coming here for over 10 years so I had high hopes. It recently went through a renovation a few years ago so it has a nice open floor plan. Service from Ricardo, a seasoned server at the restaurant for many years was exceptional. Now for the food. Prices are on the high side but let me tell you, portions are big and the quality is fantastic. The chips are some of the best I've had in a while and their salsa was super different. It wasn't a chunky red salsa but rather a smooth orange pure looking. I was a bit skeptical but at first bite, I knew I was going to eat every chip and last drop. I started with a pepino agua fresca and my goodness, it was the best I've had. Perfectly sweetened and you can tell the freshness of the cucumber was on point. We shared a couple of plates and both ordered are own tacos. Their menu has items most Mexican restaurants don't have so trust me when I say, you'll be trying new things. For dessert we went with plátano Fritos and a guava cheesecake which I forgot to take pics of, but both were delicious. Also, the chips and salsa was so good, I order a small cup and a bag of chips to go. I'll be back for sure to try more items on the menu. read more

Boyfriend and I stumbled up on this on our morning walk and so glad we came in. We ordered the veggie omelette and blue corn pancakes. I am now deeply in love with blue corn pancakes. I don't think I can have pancakes any other way. Service was impeccable and the restaurant is gorgeous. It wasn't very crowded which I like. Bizarra Capital can be considered to be a nouvelle cuisine Mexicaine based on traditional post & pre-conquest Mexican roots. Since Socal is so multi-cultural, possibly some French, Japanese and other influences can be parsed out in this modern eatery.  First off Octavio was great in guiding us through possible menu selections. He was patient since we ordered piece meal and hadn't decided on the entire meal, but wanted something to eat while perusing other options. Amazing since he had to wait on half of the restaurant.  0) Totopos fried, crispy corn chips were light, golden brown with a pleasing corn masa taste. The cooked salsa seemed made from tomato sauce & finely ground chiles with a satisfying, semi-sweet Umami.  The Tortillas de Maíz for various dishes at Bizarra are very good, rough ground & having a toasty corn scent.   1) **Guacamole is not mashed but sliced like vegan Sashimi. Garnished with lightly fermented, acidic Pico de Gallo/chiles, onion, tomato, cilantro. Dollops of Burrata-like sweet Queso Fresco accompanied by a tostada de Maíz.  2) Costa Azul/Blue Coast is 4 meaty shrimp wrapped in bacon, stuffed with standard, boring, tough American ham. Wish it were the excellent Jamón Serrano de Bellota instead of the ham. Also it is over fried so the bacon borders on almost charred.   Came with a sour Tomatillo based Salsa Verde & mayonnaise infused with Salsa Roja looking almost like Sriracha which is fine. At $22 though, it's a  pass. 3) ***Pato is excellent harking to French Confit de Canard slowly cooked in its own juices. The puffy corn masa based fried Chalupa is pleasantly leathery and has textures like fried Croissant, the passé "cronut".  The orange-chocolate Salsa seems to refer to Canard à l'Orange. Chopped Cilantro seals the deal. This is the gran obra/masterpiece at Bizarra, imo.  4) *Fideo reminds me of Japanese Rāmen or Italian Minestrone. Beef broth infused with red chile hue. Light Umami, Chile piquancy & herbal flavour with initially almost al dente Capellini d'Angeli/angel hair pasta.  Shrimp is sweet, meaty, moist with a slight garlic tinge. Chorizo is porky, firm, chewy. Tons of add ons from their unlabeled Fideo menu list.  5) Huitlacoche Quesadilla: Good quality corn mushrooms that look whole instead of looking like just a black smear. The Queso Oaxaca is a creamy version of Mozzarella. Salsa Verde. However, the whole Huitlacoche Quesadilla is absolutely bland. Wish that the Huitlacoche had been lightly sautéed in a touch of butter, chicken broth, Pico de Gallo powder, onion for some augmented flavour. At $16, another pass.  6) Chicharrón Quesadilla: Fried pork belly skin then slow braised in its own juices till the rubbery, fatty skin is almost translucently gelatinous. Full of porky gaminess like roasted premium Cochinillo Ibérico.  Queso Oaxaca oozes slowly out of this folded, fried Quesadilla. The Jalapeño Aïoli (ah ee oh lee) is a Chile piquant version of a garlic infused mayonnaise sauce from southern France. Good if you lIke game meats.  1-6) Ice Tea: Rather weak standard American "Lipton" ice tea since I had drunk too much Sakè (sah keh) at my down home favorite Sushi Dragon in Sun Valley the day before.  Looking at the wine list, I was so surprised to see only 3 wines from México!!!  Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California del Norte has amazing white & red wines that were all developed in mind pairing with Mexican cuisine! This place does sauces well! The salsa was amazing, the enchilada sauce was pretty good, though I wish I had more of it. The waiters were nice. However, the food was way overpriced for what it was. The homemade tortillas were extremely thick and tasted raw. The enchiladas were folded up like a taco, with no extra sauce on top, cubed queso fresco half melted with a bunch of oil inside. If you want enchiladas don't go here. It was the weirdest one I've ever had with a weird mouth feel, as the cheese was only slightly melted and covered in oil so it felt like I was eating curdled cheese in a thick tortilla with no sauce. When we walked in, the place looked decent. The floor was a bit off from the front to the balance of the dinning area but it wasn't too bad. However, when I looked towards the kitchen I observed the 2 older chefs in the kitchen area and when I looked at the floor there was food everywhere. I immediately became concerned. With that said, it took a bit long for someone to seat us but at least we were acknowledged soon after we came into the restaurant. Once seated we ordered guacamole and we'll it was pretty bad. Big chunks of tomatoes and a bit brown. I returned it and my fideo which I was so looking forward to. It tasted like it had been sitting all day and they had not skimmed the fat off the top. My husband's carne asada had absolutely no taste, his beans were salty and his rice was cold. Do disappointed as I really used to like their place on Greenleaf. I went with avocado, cut up serrano chile, chicken, queso fresco, Monterey jack cheese and corn. I went to flavor heaven when I took the first spoonful. The broth was bursting with delicious flavor. The first thing is that I had to enter through the back door. The handicap parking is in the back side of the building which was fine. They don't have a host stationed there so luckily a helpful person who I believe was a waiter directed us to a table. After looking around for what seemed an eternity we had to ask for a menu . We finally got to order our meal and drinks. I was hoping that they would've realized there was no table settings but they didn't. The food arrived so I had to ask for a fork. Their saving grace was that the food was delicious. The waiter who sat us down continued to be helpful as we were leaving.
