Today's Special - Smoked Pork, Cowboy Beans and Coleslaw
    Brittany A.

Affordable lunch stop! $6.50 for today's special - smoked pork sandwich, cowboy beans and coleslaw. The coleslaw was less flavorful than I would have liked but tasted great when mixed with their BBQ sauce and pork. The pork had a great smoky flavor and was piled on top of a sub bun. The beans were the real winner here with shreds of pork and a little kick, they mixed well with everything on the tray. And it was enough food to split I also bought some beef snack sticks for the road and they have a number of varieties, but plain was calling my heart. They had the right amount of pepper to be flavorful, but not too peppery. I wish I would have also tried to pineapple teriyaki or habanero. Reasonably priced as well ($7.50 for 8 sticks).

I have mixed feeling about this place. I was impressed by the selection of meats and seafood for sale. The rib dinner was out of this world! Baked beans were also very good. What I don't care for is the combination of meat market/eatery. As I'll call it. Either have your own restaurant open to let's say 10:00 pm or just have a meat market only. If not have two separate stores. Instead they open at 7:00 am. Start selling meals at 11:00. Close at 6:00 pm. Too early to close! I prefer to go someplace at NIGHT to eat ribs. Not during the afternoon hours.

This is the best BBQ I've found in the lake region of the north woods or anywhere else in the state for that matter. Their U.G.L.Y. Cheesecake Company desserts are not to be missed. Top Line: Dine-in dinner at Jr's "new digs" in the old Brick House Pizza building in Brainerd delivered well smoked meats, tasty sides, and wondrous desserts. Decor is tasteful and a solid step or three above most BBQ or pizza joints. Subdued color palette, spacious seating, and stone fireplace contributed to casual laid-back ambiance. Space was easily quiet enough for casual conversation, since most folks were doing take out orders & not populating the tables or booths. My dining partner had the chopstick chicken salad of romaine lettuce, Mandarin orange sections, tomatoes, walnuts, & chow mein noodles topped with lots of grilled chicken & an Asian dressing. Portion was generous, to say the least. I ordered a smoked brisket plate with a couple sides of choice (baked beans & cole slaw for me), oversized dinner bun, & their great BBQ sauce. Iced sweet tea came with refills. I split the house baked bun to make a brisket sandwich. Owner felt brisket was over cooked (which I didn't detect), so was generous to add a couple bones of their delightful pork ribs as compensation. Special cred for the puffy bun! Very light & tender interior of brioche weight, while having a toothsome texture. But the slightly crusty top and bottom easily handled my heavy handedness with BBQ sauce to keep the sandwich intact, even when drenched with the tangy slightly sweet sauce. Brisket was distinctly smoked & literally fall apart tender. Even the bark on the burnt ends parts of the portion were pliable & toothy (vs dried out & crunchy). There was plenty of brisket for the sandwich & a bit more. Ribs, plus leftover sides, came home for lunch tomorrow. Sides were solid on taste & texture. Cole slaw was crispy & well loaded with somewhat tame dressing. Bowl of beans had bits of smoked meat (brisket?) intermingled with the tasty beans. Portions of both were generous, which seems to be a repeating theme with Jr's. Dessert cheesecake was substantial while the filling had a surprisingly light texture for something with that much heft. The lightness kept it from weighing you down after a full meal. Flavor from my Caramel Chocolate Macchiato cheesecake punched well above its weight & remained impactful to the last bite. The dominant coffee flavor ran strong but didn't overwhelm the chocolate crumb crust completely. Nice balance! Their cookies at 2-for-a-buck are a "steal of the century" contender due to the very low cost for chocolate chip cookies with a butter rich & complex flavor profile that has some unusual notes coming into play. So if you're in the Brainerd area on vacation or attending a BIR event check out the gang at Jr's No. 19 BBQ at the old Brick House Pizza location for some great BBQ and cheesecake. If you're a pizza fiend or in need some baked goods, they may still be your huckleberry du jour.

My history with this establishment is a masterclass in disappointment, a decade-spanning saga of…read moredishonesty that I feel compelled to share. It began years ago on a Mother's Day, a celebration with my entire family--my wife, our four kids, and my mother. While the rest of us ordered from the menu, my mother opted for the buffet. The meal itself was a preview of the incompetence to come: reheated food with that distinct microwave sogginess and a pervasive smell of harsh chemical cleaner that clung to the takeout containers we requested for leftovers. The most memorable moment was when my youngest, barely a year old, nibbled on one of my mother's buffet donuts, and the owner's son, about seven at the time, ran screaming toward the kitchen--a foreshadowing of the chaos this place inspires. The true spectacle arrived with the bill. Not only had they charged us for our menu items, but they had the audacity to charge all six of us, including the children, for the adult buffet. When questioned, the staff who had perfectly understood our complex order suddenly couldn't speak a word of English. We told them exactly what we thought of their scam by never returning. A decade later, my son, nostalgic for a childhood he's misremembered, begged to celebrate a chess victory there. Reluctantly, I agreed. While he was away from the table, the lady owner accosted me at the booth, demanding to know why we'd been absent for so long. I looked her dead in the eye and said, "It's prime supper time on a Friday night, and you have two customers. We told you we didn't like being ripped off; we told you with our feet." Now, with that son grown and moved out, I made the fatal mistake of giving them one final chance. Some things never change. The food was as mediocre as ever, but the audacity had been refined into an art form. I was billed for sixteen wontons and received a paltry four. When I called to rectify the mistake, the same delivery service they proudly advertise suddenly became unavailable. They can deliver your food, but they can never, ever deliver on their promises. A perfect record of failure spanning ten years is almost impressive. Save your money and your dignity; this is a place that sees customers not as guests, but as marks.
