I'm going attempt to leave my frustration out of this review and merely present the facts of what actually happened during my horrible recent experience at the Beachcomber.
I was visiting Cape Cod last week with my family and came across the Beachcomber here on Yelp. The reviews looked GREAT so we figured we'd try it out. Upon arriving, it was very busy (which is completely to be expected because of it's location and appeal) so we ended up waiting about 40 minutes or so for a table, no big deal. While waiting, we decided to take a quick stroll down on the beach below to kill some time. They DO inform you that the pagers don't work down on the beach because it's too far away which makes complete sense. We were down on the beach no more than 20 minutes and when we went to go check on the status of our reservation, the hostess rudely stated that she paged us "several times already" and because we didn't respond, she skipped over us and gave away our table. I wouldn't be mad about that at all, but this is where our problems began because of the rude way she informed us of such. The attitude was completely unnecessary.
A few minutes later, we are informed that they have a table ready for us so we battle our way through the swarms of people to our outdoor table next to the very packed bar. It's a basic picnic table with a plastic chair on the end because we had a larger party of 8 people. Upon sitting down to our table, we very quickly realized that 8 people could in no way comfortably fit in the space they provided us with. A person from our party braved the crowds of people to locate the hostess to inform her of such. We requested a second chair for the end of the table. The hostess was extremely rude in her response and stated that they are not allowed to put a second chair at the table and we had already told her that the space was 'ok' so there was nothing she could do. How exactly can someone know that their party will fit before they even get to their table and sit down?
At this point, we were definitely becoming quite aggravated because we felt like no one cared that we weren't happy with our accomodations. We sat at the picnic table, completely crunched, ready to walk out and take our business elsewhere but knowing that we would have to wait again anywhere we went, we decided to order food.
Right after we ordered, a table opened up directly behind us and we asked the hostess if we could split up into two parties instead so we wouldn't be crunched together.
Our attempts to reason & their responses:
1. "We will happily split our party into two parties and move to different tables." - "We can't do that because you already ordered food."
2. "Can you split the check so it's between 2 tables instead?" - "No, we can't do that because that table is assigned to a different waitress and you already ordered."
3. "The half of our party who moves will order ADDITIONAL FOOD on a separate check under the other waitress" - "No, someone else has waited for that table and you said yours was fine already."
Our drinks arrived pretty quickly (thank god) and our waitress managed to spill beer on both myself and TWO other members of our party in the process- she did not offer any apologies or napkins to wipe it up.
By the time our food arrived, we were so heated we were ready to walk out without even touching our food. Because of the treatment we had received, we pulled a barstool over next to our table so we had two chairs and we could all sit comfortably and eat.
When it came time to pay the bill we decided as a whole, that due to the poor customer service & treatment, we were NOT going to leave a tip. I know that sounds awful to some of you, but the staff at this establishment were downright awful to us and this is the first time in my LIFE I was so appalled I did not want to tip. I really don't feel like they did anything well. Upon seeing our check, our waitress actually CHASED US DOWN on the way out the door complaining that she did not receive a tip from us!!! First of all, you get a tip when you do things correctly. Tips are exactly that, a TIP for GOOD SERVICE which we feel we in no way received from the staff at the Beachcomber. I was appalled that she chased us down. Someone in our party actually did end up leaving a tip after this 'episode' but I still don't think they should have.
So, all in all, we were treated poorly, rudely, and no staff member did ANYTHING to make our party more comfortable, we had beer spilled on us, we were given the runaround, and our waitress actually chased us down pretty much demanding a tip despite the complete lack of service we received.
I will not recommend this place to ANYONE. There are MUCH MUCH better places to spend your money on the Cape and for the price, you can find better food and better service.
I really don't know how this place has good reviews, they certainly completely blew their chance with us. read more
