Canteen has been one of our faves for years--great variety of food options, convenient, awesome outdoor seating (in the sand!) in the warm months, frose (frozen rose), fast service. It's always on our list of recommended dine-in spots when friends/family visit Provincetown. We got TAKEOUT for the first time tonight and were impressed enough to write a review. We're in town for Holly Folly (Christmas/holiday weekend) and have a 9mo old. We knew we'd be doing takeout for dinner. One of our other favorite spots in town wouldn't do a takeout order (too busy). We were hesitant to get something from Canteen because they had been slammed all day with a crowd from their outdoor holiday market (also highly recommended), but took a chance. Two orders of fish and chips. Staff (probably exhausted from the busy day) were so kind and friendly. The order came out fast. Really good quality. Good place to grab a fish sandwich and enjoy a view of the water. We loved the large selection of drinks, both alcoholic and not... I got a celery soda to go with my cold lobster roll ($30)! I'd definitely try the frozé next time. We also ordered a side of the Brussels sprouts ($10) which were doused in a tangy chili sauce... they were my favorite. Lobster roll was missing something... I found the lobster salad more bland than I was expecting. If I decide to get lobster again, I'll probably try Box Lunch or another spot, but I'd return here for the fish and chips. We were here off season, and just after Halloween, so you could tell everyone was tired, and things were moving slow. We checked yelp to find a place with oysters, they do not have them, tho the menu pics said they did. When I asked I got a "no we don't." The lobster roll was good, we had it warm, but it needed more salt or some hot sauce. Something. We also got cauliflower fritters, I would skip those, we ate half of one. Came here for a quick dinner when we arrived. It's a bit chaotic with people bringing out your orders but a fun beach environment with actual sand in the back. We got the pickleback oysters, which were fine, but I wouldn't recommend over regular oysters. But I had never seen them before so I had to try. We also got the crab sandwiches which were really tasty. The bread was so soft and pillowy and perfectly toasted. Overall, a great place to stop in for a quick dinner! read more

The Canteen is a must if you're in the area! We came for the seafood and left seriously impressed. The lobster rolls were fresh and flavorful--perfectly buttery with generous chunks of lobster--and the clam strips were crispy, tender, and not greasy at all. Service was friendly and fast, and everyone made us feel right at home. Special shoutout to the bartender, who poured some seriously strong drinks (in the best way possible). Combine all of that with a gorgeous view and you've got the kind of place you want to keep coming back to. Pro tip: I highly recommend getting there around 11:30 or noon to beat the crowd. Okay we went in the winter (New Years weekend) so the seating area was a little smaller than expected but after trying the food, who cares? It is delicious! While the inside seating is somewhat limited they do have lots of outside seating and a tent out back for T-dances and such. My hubby had the fish and chips and raved about it, my sausage egg and cheese on a brioche bun was off the brunch menu and was pretty dang good too. You order at the counter but the super sweet staff bring your food and drinks to the table. Yes, they have a full bar. Yes, they decorate like insane holiday people and we were living for it. This is one of those places that is inevitably of the location, feels like Provincetown and costs like Ptown for tourists and yet is really solid in quality. Canteen is pretty cute and modern in setting with a decent system of seating. The staff are kind and welcoming. You order up front at counter that looks like partial seaside market place with various drinks and alcohol as well as snacks available. The back area extends to sandbar seating where on a beautiful day, is a great northeast beach delight with friends or dates. I've ordered oysters here and lobster rolls. Oysters arrive crisp and cleaned, with an onion forward mignonette as well as usual accouterments. Well shucked, the oysters are never too briny, and have a lightness to them. They were clean without a trace of grime or shell. Their lobster roll with butter is delicious with chives and perfectly butter toasted bun. It is on the smaller side and served with fresh helping of a cabbage slaw. The acidity from slaw is refreshing but if you want extra fried snap of French fries or chips, that is understandably classic. The beach seating was lovely and dreamy on a day that wasn't too crowded where you get a nice view of ocean and shore. Only qualm was size of portion for lobster roll could be more generous compared to other lobster rolls I've had for same price point in the area. We always enjoy stopping in at The Canteen when we're in PTown. They have a fun menu with some unique items when you're a little burnt out on just fried seafood and lobster. They have a small patio out front so it looks pretty unassuming, but they have a huge sand/deck area out back with a bar too. Place your order inside, find a seat, and they'll bring to you. Service is very friendly! I've had a couple iterations of their cod banh mi, but I really enjoy the cold marinated one they now have on their menu. First, it's loaded with fish, you could easily share it with someone. The fish is really flavorful from the soy marinade. It's a very refreshing sandwich with the cool fish and crunchy vegetables. Came here for dinner after our whale watch. We needed dog friendly. And we all wanted lobster rolls. This place delivered. Order at the counter. Then go sit out back in the beach. They give you a number and deliver your food to you. They also have bars out back for your liquid refreshments. There is a bussing station - so after you are done eating, you bring your plates etc over and clear your own table. The bussing station also has extra napkins, utensils and water. There are self busing stations so it's quick and easy turnover on tables. I had a fairly positive experience at The Canteen. I got the salmon bowl, which was extremely flavorful and a very good portion size. Unfortunately I did not get a picture of it because we were starving and I devoured it. The oysters were good, small, but good. I would return to this location. They have tons of seating outback, which is right on the water and beautiful if you catch the sunset. Service can be hit or miss depending on who you're dealing with, but that's most restaurants nowadays. Amazing clam chowder and I went with the hot lobster roll (very generous portion). Best part: the back patio, extending to the beach. Our table was on the sand :) lovely low-key music, quiet and intimate - we were in p-town but we may have been in Italy or Mexico. It's not fancy but it's lovely and very relaxing and romantic. The perfect fish sandwich and ambience! Typically, I set a low bar for a fish sandwich. Now I have a high bar! The cod was delicate, breaded and fried lightly, and plenty of it. The tartar sauce was light and not from a food service industry. Delish! The shredded lettuce and cabbage perfectly seasoned AND the sliced dill pickles were better than grandmas! We came here at a friend's recommendation and we weren't disappointed. We got a hot and cold lobster roll, crispy brussel sprouts, french fries, and Provincetown oysters. A lot of lobster roll places have gotten very expensive, but I felt like I got a good amount of lobster here. The hot one wasn't the most flavorful lobster I've had, however. But I'd imagine the cold one would be better. The toasted bun was perfect and appreciated that lobster rolls come with a pickle and slaw. They describe their crispy brussel sprouts as a best seller and I can see why! Perfectly cooked and the chili fish sauce went great with it. The oysters were good and the fries were crispy, no complaints there either. All the food arrived pretty quickly. The staff was super nice and the space was great with plenty of outside seating in the back. Each table has a bunch of condiments and napkins and we really appreciated the water stations. This place has a nice, big back patio decorated with lights. It's such a pretty place to be especially during sunset/early evening. You order your food at the front register and they give you a number and they have their waitstaff bring the food to you. I got the salad with lobster and a cup of their clam chowder. I regret that I didn't ask for the dressing on the side since it was a bit too much for me but I enjoyed the amount of salad they give you. This seems to be a very popular place to eat while in Provincetown so I had lunch here earlier this week. It's located on Commercial Street and has no nearby parking options. At the counter I ordered a bowl of clam chowder ($9) and the fish sandwich ($15) and they were ready in about 10 minutes. Seating is in front or back which is a beach vibe including sand. The chowder had a slight lemony twang to it and was a small serving. The sandwich was a nice size cod fillet with slaw and pickles on a brioche bun. Taste wise I thought it was ok but not something that I would necessarily reorder if I returned. We were here in the month of November and despite much of Commercial St being shuttered, this place was hopping. The dining area is small, but it was full. It looked to me that this is a place locals frequent, based on interaction with staff. They appear to have a daily soup special as well, that was very popular on this cold & windy day. There is apparently an overflow heated tent in back, but we were able to grab a small table inside. You place your order at the front and then your food is brought out to you when ready. We had to ask for our drinks, as did another family since the food runner had no idea about them and yet when you ordered, they did not give them to you at the counter. That was a bit odd, but not a big deal. My buttered lobster roll was good. I just wish they seasoned it better. I doctored it up with salt & pepper. At first I didn't think it had much butter, but soon saw it absorbed into the bottom of the really nicely griddled bun. It came with some very fresh coleslaw. My husband opted for the Mac & cheese. It's first come, first serve seating, so run to the back and find a seat for you and your friends/family!! **EAT HERE** We came to sit and look out on the water and have some cocktails but couldn't help but want the food looking at everyone's plates! We had 2 very potent Long Island Ice Teas! We ordered the Fish and Chips and a Cauliflower Fritter. SO GOOD! Batter on the fish was perfect and the fish was fresh and juicy. The Cole Slaw here is really good. It's a simple lemon vinaigrette slaw without a heavy Mayo base! The fries were seasoned and crispy. The Fritter was good but was undercooked. The employees were super nice and helpful. I did see the Lobster Roll and just by site alone, I wouldn't recommend. The couple next to us were not happy with it either.
