This spot is one of my favorites and I visit each year! Love that the seating area expanded since last June and really added to the fun vibe! The food has already been great, but the lobster grilled cheese was the BEST!

We had the best lobster rolls here! The canteen has a lot to offer, so come here for lunch or dinner. There is seating out front, but the best seating is in the back. Behind the building is a large area with multiple seating options. You are almost on the water too.

Amazing food. We came here hungry straight off the beach and it did not disappoint. Beach front tables in the back and a casual vibe. Lobster roll was better than any I've had. Our best meal on any part of the cape by far!

We were here off season, and just after Halloween, so you could tell everyone was tired, and things were moving slow. We checked yelp to find a place with oysters, they do not have them, tho the menu pics said they did. When I asked I got a "no we don't." The lobster roll was good, we had it warm, but it needed more salt or some hot sauce. Something. We also got cauliflower fritters, I would skip those, we ate half of one. The outside bar area is wonderful, great views. Inside of the shop is super cute. The food was just mid, and the hospitality chilly.

Came here for a quick dinner when we arrived. It's a bit chaotic with people bringing out your orders but a fun beach environment with actual sand in the back. We got the pickleback oysters, which were fine, but I wouldn't recommend over regular oysters. But I had never seen them before so I had to try. We also got the crab sandwiches which were really tasty. The bread was so soft and pillowy and perfectly toasted. Overall, a great place to stop in for a quick dinner!

Oysters

Pickleback oysters were delicious. The lobster roll was meaty and buttery. The star of the show were the fish and chips the batter on the fish was flaky and the fish was moist. The service is quick and the ambiance is the view you get of the beach when you sit outside.

Clam strips and fries

The Canteen is a must if you're in the area! We came for the seafood and left seriously impressed. The lobster rolls were fresh and flavorful--perfectly buttery with generous chunks of lobster--and the clam strips were crispy, tender, and not greasy at all. Service was friendly and fast, and everyone made us feel right at home. Special shoutout to the bartender, who poured some seriously strong drinks (in the best way possible). Combine all of that with a gorgeous view and you've got the kind of place you want to keep coming back to. Pro tip: I highly recommend getting there around 11:30 or noon to beat the crowd. By 1 p.m., there was a line out the door! Highly recommend for a casual but top-quality seafood spot with a chill vibe.

We stopped by The Canteen for dinner and had a great experience. The hot lobster roll was absolutely delicious, and the vinaigrette slaw served with the dish was really refreshing. Ordering is simple, you place your order at the counter, and the friendly staff bring the food out to your table. Just note that it's a casual setup, so you're expected to bus your own table when you're finished. One of the highlights was the seating area in the back patio/deck space, which has a relaxed and inviting atmosphere. If you're looking for a casual seafood spot with a chill vibe, good food, and friendly service, The Canteen is definitely worth a visit.

I didn't like the food at all. No salt or pepper to add. Place is a bit overrated. Regret tipping at this place.

Chicken Tacos

This place is a bit of a mess. This last time we had the chicken tacos, which aren't really a taco at all--they come out as a giant pile of chicken that's impossible to pick up or eat like a taco.

This is one of those places that is inevitably of the location, feels like Provincetown and costs like Ptown for tourists and yet is really solid in quality. Canteen is pretty cute and modern in setting with a decent system of seating. The staff are kind and welcoming. You order up front at counter that looks like partial seaside market place with various drinks and alcohol as well as snacks available. The back area extends to sandbar seating where on a beautiful day, is a great northeast beach delight with friends or dates. I've ordered oysters here and lobster rolls. Oysters arrive crisp and cleaned, with an onion forward mignonette as well as usual accouterments. Well shucked, the oysters are never too briny, and have a lightness to them. They were clean without a trace of grime or shell. Their lobster roll with butter is delicious with chives and perfectly butter toasted bun. It is on the smaller side and served with fresh helping of a cabbage slaw. The acidity from slaw is refreshing but if you want extra fried snap of French fries or chips, that is understandably classic. The beach seating was lovely and dreamy on a day that wasn't too crowded where you get a nice view of ocean and shore. Only qualm was size of portion for lobster roll could be more generous compared to other lobster rolls I've had for same price point in the area. Ambiance, location as well as oysters are the highlights. Easily 4.4. More lobster roll would be a 5.

Okay we went in the winter (New Years weekend) so the seating area was a little smaller than expected but after trying the food, who cares? It is delicious! While the inside seating is somewhat limited they do have lots of outside seating and a tent out back for T-dances and such. My hubby had the fish and chips and raved about it, my sausage egg and cheese on a brioche bun was off the brunch menu and was pretty dang good too. You order at the counter but the super sweet staff bring your food and drinks to the table. Yes, they have a full bar. Yes, they decorate like insane holiday people and we were living for it. They even give out little free plastic sharks for the kids that eat there, so friggin precious! Looking forward to going back in the summer 100 percent. You should go here.

Fish sandwich (comes with chips)
Valerie N.

We got a fish sandwich and fish tacos here. The fish sandwich was tasty, but the portion of fish was really small. The breading was excessive too given the size of fish. There are water jugs placed all over as well as accessible condiments. It's also nicely located next to the water, and there's a ton of seating. Good place, but definitely wanted more!

NOTE: our waiter was inexplicably and somewhat aggressively handsy with me. A special thank you to Elia, who helped us with our reservation, accommodated a change, and even helped with a gift card. That kind of attention and care set the tone before we even arrived. It made a real difference. The hostess at the front desk was also incredibly kind and helpful, and we appreciated that right away. We were seated upstairs in a beautiful room that felt intimate and special, perfect for celebrating the holiday. The food exceeded our expectations. We started with the crab cakes and watermelon salad, both excellent. I had the chicken, Scott had the lobster, and both were outstanding. What made the night memorable wasn't just the food, though -- it was the hospitality. You can tell when a restaurant has people who genuinely care about the guest experience, and Helltown delivered that in every way. We'll absolutely be back.

My son has multiple food allergies, which can make dining out stressful. After we informed our waiter about his allergies, the waiter returned to let us know that the kitchen could safely accommodate his needs. Shortly afterward, another staff member, whom we later learned was Max, checked on us to make sure everything was being handled correctly. What impressed us most was that he personally delivered my son's specially prepared allergy-friendly meal, giving us added confidence that every precaution had been taken. His genuine concern, and willingness to go the extra mile meant so much to our family. Our waiter also provided good service, but Max's personal attention and genuine concern made all the difference. We were a group of six, and every one of us thoroughly enjoyed our delicious meals. From the outstanding food to the exceptional service, the entire experience exceeded our expectations. Thank you, Max, for making what is often an anxious experience for our family into an enjoyable and relaxing meal. Your professionalism, compassion, and commitment to accommodating food allergies did not go unnoticed. We truly appreciate you and look forward to returning the next time we visit Provincetown.

Walking in at 6pm with no reservations, we were offered a table just outside the front door. Our waitress was very friendly and prompt. In a unique twist, my tacos were served deconstructed so that I could assemble them myself. The only downside was that corn tortillas were quite fragile and did not hold together. It might even be our new favorite. My family ordered the deviled eggs, which I got to try and I ordered a cheeseburger with french fries. I had never heard of a restaurant using shredded cheese on a burger so that was a unique experience. It was still good though. I asked for my burger cooked rare and they did just that. The meat was seasoned pretty well and the french fries hit the spot. I ordered two diet cokes that went down FAST and really washed everything down. I was happy with the service and I love that it's an LGBTQ+ owned business. The history of the restaurant is really sweet and I've heard that the owners of the restaurant will even come out to say hi to you if you ask to meet them. Overall it was a great dining experience and I would love to try more items on the menu in the future.

EXTREMELY DISTURBING EXPERIENCE WITH THE WAITER!…read more This took place around 9:00 PM on Thursday, June 4. Our group consisted of three couples dining together. At the end of the meal, we asked if the bill could be split into thirds. Our waiter, Martin P., told us that he would not split the check and instead instructed us to write down exactly what each person ordered so that he could charge us separately. Although no other restaurant we visited in Provincetown required us to do this, we followed his instructions and listed our individual items. When Martin returned, he was visibly upset and stated that our payments were approximately $70 short. There was confusion because our group was trying to determine who had already paid, who had not, and whether something had been missed in the calculations. I even asked whether we were expected to calculate individual tax amounts ourselves, as no one knew what tax would be for each separate charge. Rather than calmly helping us resolve the discrepancy, Martin began yelling at our group. At one point he stated, "If I don't get $70, I am going to charge one of the credit cards that I have." This immediately concerned us. We were not refusing to pay. We were actively trying to understand where the discrepancy occurred and make sure the restaurant received the full amount owed. To resolve the issue, one of my friends and I went with Martin into a back room to review the charges. After reviewing everything, my friend agreed to pay the remaining balance immediately. The payment was processed and the bill was fully paid. At that point I was trying to calm the situation and bring it to a close. Instead, Martin became even more agitated and began yelling profanities at us. He shouted, "Get the f*** out of my restaurant! It's people like you why we don't split checks! You all need to get the f*** out now!" Other people started noticing this go down. We were stunned. The bill had been paid. Nobody was attempting to leave without paying. We were simply trying to resolve a billing issue after following the waiter's instructions. As we were leaving, my wife later told me that Martin placed his HAND ON HER BACK and guided her toward the exit. While it was not forceful, it felt unnecessary and added to an already hostile and intimidating experience. What happened next is why I ultimately decided to write this review. A few days later, while walking through Provincetown looking for a place to have lunch, our group passed The Mayflower Food & Drink and noticed Martin working there. When he saw us, he deliberately tapped on the glass to get our attention. After making eye contact, he made a hand gesture across his neck and pointed for us to leave and keep walking. The original incident had already ended. The bill had been paid. Yet days later he still felt the need to single out our group and signal that we were unwelcome. Had this simply been confusion over a split check, I would not be writing this review. Billing mistakes happen. What I cannot overlook is being threatened with unauthorized credit card charges, being screamed at with profanity while attempting to resolve the issue, being ordered out after the bill had been paid, Martin touching my wife, and then encountering the same employee days later making a gesture directed at our group from another restaurant. This experience was troubling enough that I believe others should be aware of it.
