I knew that with functional medicine I could use diet and lifestyle changes to address my metabolic dysfunction to help my body work more effectively rather than just addressing or covering up the symptoms. Dr Slavin worked with my whole body to address the underlying issues that are exhibiting various symptoms.:elevated cholesterol and high blood pressure, as well as elevations in blood sugar. We talked about how combining foods like protein and healthy fats and avoiding simple carbohydrates can help to balance my blood sugar, affect cholesterol as well as blood pressure. We did discuss "Paleo" which was making a difference as well. I first heard about Paleo from Dr Slavin at a Colorado Community College class. I have lost 18 lbs, feel more energetic and sleep better. I signed up immediately for a free seminar..in fact, I went to two seminars before signing up just to make sure I understood all aspects of the program so that I knew what was required of me to be successful. Dr. Melissa couldn't have been more kind and reassuring that if I followed the program, not only would the weight come off, but my pre-diabetic blood sugar levels and ever-increasing cholesterol numbers would come down. Steadily, that's exactly what happened. Now that I've completed maintenance, I can say that my weight has stayed down to a 5-pound range from my lowest point and my blood sugar and cholesterol numbers remain low.
