Me and the hubby absolutely love The Beer Nut! They're so close to our house, we're probably here about once a week at this point. They have certainly rescued us from boredom during the past year of limited travel and socialization. We've capitalized on this time by brewing like fiends! and The Beer Nut has been there every step of the way by providing all the necessary supplies! We've appreciated that they've had very responsible business practices during the pandemic. They require masks and only allow a handful of customers in at a time. If the door is locked during business hours, this is why. Just wait outside for a customer or two to leave, and you should be welcome to come in! They have very competitive pricing on most items. We have our own grain mill so we've been buying their 50lb bags of bulk grain and grinding it at home. They have the full range of supplies. Everyone from beginner to advanced homebrewers will find everything they need to make a batch of beer. In addition to beer supplies, they have wine and cider making supplies. The best thing they have is the rentable fruit press. So if you have more fruit than you know what to do with, you don't need to own a bunch of fancy equipment to turn it into a delicious fermented beverage. The only criticism I have is that sometimes they are out of things but considering how popular homebrewing has gotten in the past year, this is probably unavoidable. Employees are fairly knowledgeable but not really that friendly. My experience here many many times is that they just want you to stop asking questions and buy something. Not a great experience for someone trying to learn about brewing. A far better and friendlier place to go for supplies AND questions is Art's Brewing supply downtown. read more

My husband and I came here just to check the place out. We had some excellent help and excellent ideas were given to us about brewing beer and wine. We left without buying anything, but returned in a few days to buy a wine starter kit. We are very excited about this purchase and tasting our very first batch of wine. The prices were competitive with some of the other brewing companies that we visited in Salt Lake City. Very surprised to see that The Beer Nut has any good reviews. I first purchased supplies from The Beer Nut several years ago when I bought my first brew kit. At the time they were the only brew supply store in town. I would explain the staff as patronizing, jaded and overall unfriendly. I find it surprising that with a surge of home brewers in the past several years that they wouldn't take advantage of the newcomers. I have been back several times since only to experience the same elitist attitude. I live downtown, and after my experiences at The Beer Nut I have made it a point to drive all the way to Fort Union to go to Salt City Brew Supply. You will experience a much more open and friendly atmosphere there. I called for a part needed to disassemble a Sanke keg, which they didn't have. While I said "thank you" and went to hang up, he quickly said, "Wait, what do you need it for?" Turns out I didn't actually need this expensive part as I'm a homebrewer with only three kegs, and not in need of a production tool. He spent about 10 minutes on the phone walking me through how to do it in a safe manner and to call him back if I run into any issues. I was shocked how helpful he was when not even expecting a sale. Because of that, I've changed to buying the majority of my products from them vs. online. My experience has been the prices are fair. Sometimes they're slightly more than competitors and sometimes slightly less. The real value add here is how helpful they are. They're always willing to take the time and help out with any questions you need. The products are all very high quality as well with good temperate control on the yeast and hops. I can't say enough good things about them. If you're in the area, definitely consider using this place! read more

These folks are the friendliest, most helpful and awesome brew aficionados ! We bought our first equipment kit from them and they were very patient and helpful. They always remember me when I come in. We have brewed three kits from them and every single one has been fantastic! One of our friends even put down his Chasing Tail because he said it tasted gross next to ours :) We also have one recipe from scratch that we developed with the help of their staff and while it still has some weeks before it will be ready, I can tell it will be awesome already. The Beer Nut is the place to go for raw brewing ingredients in SLC. They have a wonderful selection of grains, yeast and hops. The staff is very knowledgeable and very willing to help. The beernut has been my local HBS for three years now and started me on my brewing path. Armed with a very knowledgeable staff. All home brew, some do wine and mead as well. It has been my experience if they dont have it they can order it, if they cant order it they can point you to a place that does have it. I made some mead last year and they sent me to a bee keeping place for cheaper fresh honey. They could have charged me and kept my cash, but with a five gallon batch they helped me save some money. I have had nothing but friendly service and good sound advice on my brewing. I dont know why some folks complain about the pricing it isnt far off from anyone else. Really there aren't a lot of places to buy brewing supplies in Salt Lake City. Fortunately the ones we do have are excellent. Conveniently located right on State street this place is my favorite for getting my wine making supplies and bottles. The staff is super helpful, friendly and are always willing to help and answer questions. Even when you are first starting at something they are there to help and won't make you feel stupid for asking a basic question. And when I started doing wine in addition to beer I had a LOT of questions. Don't be deceived by the size of the store, they have a really good selection of supplies and ingredients. As a woman, I will admit that I was very intimidated when walking into this place for the first time. My fears quickly dissolved when a friendly guy greeted me. I told him that I was looking for a beer started kit for my boyfriend then I got a little scared that he was going to try to sell me all kinds of things I didn't need (since I had no idea what I needed). Boy was I wrong! He quickly showed me the most basic kit at the most affordable price and let me know what could be added on. He spent time educating me on what the kit included and why. He also asked me what type of beer we enjoyed and made a few recommendations for a beginning beer brewer. I haven't visited this place since because I'm not a beer brewer but my boyfriend always buys his kits and supplies here and we recommend it to all of our friends. I was a bit hesitant to go here after reading through earlier reviews, but after numerous visits I couldn't disagree more with the negative comments (which largely seemed to indicated people there were unhelpful and smug). Everyone I have met at the shop has been amazingly helpful, both over the phone and in person. They have tolerated an endless stream of questions, phone calls, discussions. And being completely new to brewing (but well versed in science), I have really appreciated how much they do not talk down to me about things. They are excited and experienced with all types of brewing; I recently brought a purchased pumpkin cider into the shop and Michael took the time to brainstorm with me about how to reproduce it at home. He is just fantastic. A cool thing for those who don't know, the shop also rents out presses and mashers for making your own apple juice at home. Woman who works here (4/19) was not happy to be there. Men were helpful but had to ask her first if it was okay. She told us no to every request we had saying it would be to much to clean up. Purchased alot of product from this store in the past dealing with her unhappiness. No more for me. Dont need to feel dirty when coming out of that place read more

This place is a great for what it is. Some people complain about the prices but I looked up malts online and Amazon is the same price as the beer uot so why not support a local business? I think the guys working there have always been super nice and helpful. There could definitely be more variety of malts and equipment for my taste but they seem to have a lot of different hops which is great! Cheers! read more

Two stars is too generous. I gave two because BN are the only ones around who will swap co2 on Saturday. There were 5 people standing around and the one helping me had no idea what anything I asked for was. Then someone finally helped me who spoke the language of beer and I received help that actually helped. Additionally, the prices are marked up beyond reasonable explanation on virtually everything. Furthermore, for all grain brewers the selection is minimal compared to others in the area. My parents loved the beernut however; I must say that my time and money are better spent else where. Clean up the staff knowledge, provide better prices, choose a better location and increase your customer service and maybe it would be worth going to. read more

Awesome, awesome, awesome! I had the great good fortune to be able to get there a few times when Mark was still sometimes in and when the process of development was still going on and every time I went in, which was frequently, I could count on either learning or finding something new. Sometimes it was a book, of which they had plenty, other times it would be some yeast or hop variant, sometimes a new kit, which was always a safe bet to try a new brew as those are a safe bet to come out extremely well. Eventually, I springboarded into crafting my own, but these guys were and are dedicated to the fine brew as fully as someone can be. This is one of the places that I always rooted for it to make and I'm glad it did, thanks, at least in part, to my usual weekly or more contributions for a fairly extended run there. If I ever get back into the game, this is where I'll go. I might pop in again anyway, possibly just to soak in the ambiance or maybe just as a reminder, as one step inside and you'll know you're in the right place.
