If you haven't been to The Bellwether yet, you're so missing out. I started with the Heirloom Tomato Salad, OMG declicioso, then was the House Cured Gravlax, again ***** 5 Stars. My main dish was a bit out of my comfort zone. I had the Octopus, so delicious and the accompanying sauce was so nice and savory. Bottom line..... Cool venue, good food & vegetarian friendly. A little confusing to find if it's your first time, but worth it

My cousin and I had a delightful brunch at The Bellwether June 1, 2024. It was our first time visiting and our waiter Tyler took great care of us. He gave us great suggestions and did not make us feel as if we were inconveniencing him by asking about modifications. We had the Cinnamon Toast Crunch French Toast, Smash Fried Potatoes, and Bacon Fried Rice (without the Bacon). It was all delicious. My cousin also ordered a drink I forget which one, but she enjoyed it. We will definitely be back, and I have already recommended it to others. read more

My boyfriend and I sat at the bar. The bartender was super nice and took our orders right away. The restaurant was pretty busy, but the two behind the bar did what they could to keep up. The carpaccio was incredible. That horseradish-boursin creme was EVERYTHING! The bbq chicken confit was also great. The butcher steak wasn't medium rare, more on the medium, in some places medium well side, but everything else made up for it. The presentation on everything dish was beautiful. We were a bit disappointed because some of the menu items we were excited to try from their online menu were not on the menu given to us at the restaurant. Great time at the Bellwether! The food was impeccable and the drinks were even better! We shared the beef stroganoff and the steak entrée. The ambiance is amazing and they have a large patio for warm days/nights. My only complaint is that our table wasn't ready for our 8:30 pm reservation. We were asked to either wait downstairs or outside (it was freezing). Our table was still not ready 15 minutes later, so they offered us a spot at the bar. At this point we were starving, so decided to sit at the bar. I think our experience would have been perfect had we been able to sit at a table like we reserved. I know it's hard to control table times, but if you're recommending reservations during COVID, I might suggest table time limits. read more

pretty disappointing experience here. Drinks were ok , food was ok except the portobello mushroom tempura was rock hard instead of light and crispy. Our server was not attentive. Never refilled our water without us having to ask multiple times. When we asked for a second bottle of wine, no one came by and we had to ask about it - and then we were told just then they were chilling it bc it had been kept at room temp (!?) Server seemed really overwhelmed although it was not busy and she also clearly wanted us to leave. I will not be returning here. read more

Wonderful place! The cocktails are interesting. They have a delicious selection of small plates; our group got everything except Waugh ribeye and the gravlax. I have every intention of going back to try those two as the rest of the small plates were very tasty. The carrots, I especially remember. Of the entrees, the English pea ravioli was recommended and lived up to our waiter's high praises. The sea bass was very well made and flavorful. I had the octopus and it was very good; can't say more than that as that's the first time I've had octopus. Very good texture, not rubbery at all. This used to be one of my favorite restaurants - I have spent several occasions here, so it saddens me to leave this poor review. We had a party of 6 and spent over $600 on food. No one from my party will return to the restaurant after tonight. I will try to keep it straightforward and factual: 1. Food: the food had beautiful presentation but every dish I was served tonight, was served cold (Pork Belly, Pot Stickers, Scallops & Mushroom Ravioli) I am confident that had I not been eating cold meat, it would have been very good. 2. Beverages: the beverage program was amazing and the only aspect that was satisfying tonight. 5-stars to whoever is organizing this program. I loved seeing a true German Riesling on the wine list. Cocktails were delicious and well executed. 3. Service: just horrible. Our server was gone for long periods of time, she never delivered our food herself, she didn't refill non alcoholic drinks unless we stopped her at another table and requested it and she was frankly quite pushy about ordering more alcohol. Inattentive is an understatement. She had no awareness of our conversation walked right up and interrupted, didn't even try to fake an "excuse me" or "sorry to interrupt, are we ready to order?" The food runners brought each course to the table and "auctioned" it off, also frequently interrupting our conversation to ask who ordered what every time they brought something. Very annoying, especially as the person sitting on the end of the table... I don't know who ordered what! Nor should I be expected to direct the food runners as to where to deliver items. That's what our server is for. If you're going to have food runners, you should utilize seating positions. The staff needs work in this area big time. 4. Atmosphere: usually one of my favorite aspects of this restaurant and everything was great until we were finishing our 3rd course around 9:00pm BEFORE THE RESTAURANT EVEN CLOSED and the staff turned off the music, were sitting around at the bar with jackets on, our server was no where to be found - which we later realized was because she was downstairs outside smoking - and they turned the lights up on us. AT 9:00PM ON A SATURDAY NIGHT AFTER SPENDING UPWARDS OF $600.00! I was totally appalled and embarrassed that I chose this restaurant for my group to spend our hard earned money and Saturday night out at. We all felt awkward and got the picture they wanted us to leave. I would never expect to be treated this way by a respectable dining establishment. Also - any competent industry professional knows a table of 4+ easily takes a 2-2.5+ hour turn. If your establishment is choosing to shut down early at 9:00pm - don't take a reservation for a table of 8 at 7:15pm. read more

Holy what the heck, this is the best of all best I've been to in St Louis. I will admit, I am not good at writing reviews for places but myself and two others had about every small plate on the menu and it was simply delightful. We loved the onion ravioli, we can't say enough good things about the lamb meatballs, the caesar salad was simply happy, the mushroom salad with pomegranate was worth going back for in itself. We have never left somewhere so happy to talk about and have had food that was just made exactly how a chef wanted it to, phenomenal. Our drinks were not overbearing but simply tasteful. This review is based solely on how long our meal, drinks & service took. The food was delicious. We arrived about 5 minutes early for our 7:00 pm reservation. They were having some menu issues so they asked us to wait, which was no problem at all. By the time we were seated we did not get served drinks until 7:40 PM, so 40 minutes after our reservation time. We did not leave the restaurant until 10 o'clock at night so just be prepared as we were there for three hours to have dinner with four people. We actually saw our neighbors there & they also told us that they had been there for multiple hours and that it took very long. I have no idea why this was or if this is a normal occurrence but we definitely were not planning on a three hour dinner or waiting 40 minutes to be served our first drinks. Our server was very kind though and did apologize about the wait multiple times and again the food was delicious. Went to grab dinner and drinks here this evening. First, the good: the waitstaff from the front desk to our waitress and servers were very attentive and proactive. We ordered several drinks on and off the menu and all were excellent. The patio was spaced out and we felt safe dining here in COVID times. Now, the bad: the food left a bit to be desired. We ordered the fries and grilled cheese/tomato soup which were both ok. They were both lukewarm when they arrived. We do appreciate Asian fusion foods but the fries and sauces were spicy in a way that was odd. We also didn't get a spoon to eat our soup until after the soup was cold. The main disappointment however was the duck polenta dish. The presentation seemed promising but both the duck and the polenta were so salty that it was honestly inedible. My fiancé and I were splitting this entree and could not finish it. We had the cheesecake to finish our meal and it was decent. So in summary - drinks and service were great but the food could use a little more attention. read more

i'd had bellwether in my bookmarks for AGES, and was excited to be able to give it a try when i had a friend come to town (yay for in-person interactions again!). i've also had polite society in mind forever, so i was even more enthused about eating at its sister restaurant. the drink menu looked delicious, and as a book nerd, i was swooned by the drink names. i did call out to the bartender that it was a lil disappointing to not see any black authors (not with any real malice, just in passing), and she immediately copped an attitude and hopped on the defense. okay....cool cool cool. i ordered my drink and was happily pulled away to a real table so i didn't have to interact with her any more. i took a sip once i was seated and was shocked at how sweet it was. for an establishment rated as well as it was, with the drink descriptions listed (and, even at the price points), i was expecting the cocktails to be well-balanced and nuanced. instead, my spring snow (inspired by mishima, also a swoon) tasted like the kind of drink you hand a 22 year old who's pretending she's ready to upgrade from a lemon drop. i stopped drinking it and ordered a glass of wine instead. the waiter, who was friendly but not perceptive, ignored this. so...drink wasn't good, but maybe it was the bartender, maybe not, the food menu has to be where it's at, right? we ordered the mushrooms, the pumpkin ravioli, and the langostino and shrimp pasta. the mushrooms and the pasta were both undersalted. mushrooms also could have used more black pepper to help bring out the depth of their umami. the langostino were tiny, and i commented to my friend that they looked more like crawfish than anything else. the shrimp were also overcooked into almost a complete o shape. the pumpkin ravioli had nice flavors, but was so spicy that it made it difficult to thoroughly enjoy. i'm southern, so i love spice and use hot sauce on the regular, but this was a bit extreme. i was sad to have another let down experience at such a hyped up restaurant, but i'm keeping faith that my prince will one day come. i just know it won't be here. read more

Ate here for brunch on a recent Saturday. Restaurant is in a very interesting building near Lafayette Square. Food was good, not great. I had the biscuits and gravy, and, while good, the gravy couldn't mask the heaviness of the biscuit. Light and flaky it wasn't. The best part of the meal was the 'small plate' cinnamon role.
