I've visited Herbie's several times for business meetings and most recently a birthday lunch, and every experience has been consistently excellent. The food has been enjoyable every single time. I honestly haven't had anything there that I didn't like. From the coconut shrimp and mixed greens salad to brunch and dessert, everything has been well prepared. I'm not much of a cheesecake person (I know ), but the cheesecake from Hank's Cheesecakes was absolutely worth ordering. The atmosphere is polished without being stuffy. It's hard to find restaurants that stay consistent across multiple visits. Definitely one of my go-to spots in Clayton. read more

We hadn't been to Herbie's for about four years - not for any particular reason - it just happened. I was looking for a place to have dinner and when I saw Herbie's, it sounded good! We had a reservation and were greeted and seated as soon as we walked in. We prefer sitting outside when we come here, but it was chilly and in addition to not wanting to be cold throughout our meal, their outdoor seating wasn't set up. The dining room is just bland and boring looking. Our server came over with water right after we were seated. We needed a minute to check out the cocktail menu. We ordered drinks, heard the specials, asked a few questions, and made our choices. My husband started with a half Caesar salad and said it was just okay. I started with the French Onion Soup and I was disappointed. I believe it's the worst I've had. It was oddly sweet and it was served with two full bay leaves in it. I thought everyone knew to remove bay leaves before serving food. When our dishes were removed from the table, I pointed it out. The person said, "sorry about that" and that was it. My husband got the halibut special and said it was good, but nothing great. I got the Pear and Goat Cheese Flatbread and it was really good! I enjoyed Herbie's. My husband is from StL and our family still live there so while in town for a visit we had a family dinner here one night with some others and they were excellent with our toddler and larger group. Waitress was very friendly and efficient. We tried several things from the menu including a large dinner Cesar salad add chicken, a burger, the duck, whole chicken, salmon and the surf and turf hotdog (interesting). All enjoyed their food and everything was large portion and great taste. For dessert - delicious coffee and a decadent chocolate torte. The inside is spacious and elegant and I loved the outdoor patio with the fire pit (too cold in FEB to enjoy). I think we will be back. Parking was street but easy enough. read more

Had late lunch here. Sat at bar, I think Mya was our bartender. She was absolutely awesome. Looks like it would be a nice hangout during the warmer weather as it appeared to have a large outdoor area. I had Modern brewery's Citraopolis, a very nice hazy ipa. I ordered the lobster roll, I was impressed with the amount of meat, but it seemed a little bland. Lobster is the star. I had the white chocolate raspberry cheese cake. I may be mistaken, but it seemed like it had spent too many days in the refrigerator. Taste was good, but the texture seemed a bit off. Next time I'll try the crème brûlée. I always like Herbies! It's like an ultra dependable place to go for lunch or dinner if you don't want to be adventurous but still want good quality food and drinks! It's conveniently located and very roomy in the inside. The drink are actually really good tho (especially the Bloom No. 2...goodness). I always sit at the bar and they are so attentive. They bartenders have really good personalities and skilled enough to make off menu drinks and can do substitutions for menu drinks (I'm a bartender so this is always important to me). I had the steak frites which was a little fatty for my liking. I have had other things in the past...(like the Oklahoma onion burger ) this just wasn't the best but everything else made up for it!. Another Yelper highly recommend Herbie's. Herbies is easy to find on the corner in Clayton, featuring a large fire presentation on the elevated patio near the front entrance. Parking is available on the surrounding streets and public parking garages. When I arrived my eyes were immediately drawn to the unique lighting. The restaurant features dark wood that conveys warmth with low lights. The large windows in the bar area make it seem expansive. Seating is around the perimeter so tables are half comfortable cushioned bench and half chairs. The service was excellent! I was greeted immediately on arrival and shown to my table. My server, Bianca, quickly checked in with me and bartender was outstanding. She was personable and customized my brunch drink with lime, and personally brought it to my table. It was delish! I ordered a veggie omelet with crispy breakfast potatoes and a side order of cheesy grits. Everything was cooked to perfection and flavorful. I loved the touch of pickled red onions. Gin drink too sweet. Pinot Noir good. The issue was the food. I've never seen a filet mignon shaped like a pork chop. Didn't have filet caliber. Every person who ordered meat was overcooked including the burger. The sides were good. Pesto was super super garlicky. Fresh veggies. Due to it being a group dinner and in a time crunch, we did not send our steaks back. Overall it was meh. It's a St. Louis iconic place and good location. But you go to be seen and grab some drinks. I'm a little late to the party for this review, as I visited Herbie's earlier this year but when we stopped at Herbie's for dinner, I was excited because I had never been. Our family friends were in town and picked Herbie's because they had heard good things about it. Overall, it was a pretty average experience. The service was good, and the ambience was what one would expect from a more upscale restaurant. The food, however, is what I was mostly disappointed by. The entrees were all very unevenly seasoned, with most of the vegetables lacking any salt, and the steaks did not have a great sear either. The risotto for the scallops was undercooked as well. The one upside is that we had some very excellent appetizers-- both the Brussels sprouts and the crab cakes were very good and something I would get again. The desserts were also decent but I'm not sure I would order again. Overall, the service was great, and I would go back for the appetizers which were amazing but I don't think I'd head back again for their entrees. read more

I have begun following Herbies on Instagram and when they began to showcase their Fall Menu I felt compelled and inspired to visit. Mostly, I kept seeing the scallops and the light sprinkling of parm that whispered with a taunting finger to stop what I was doing and take a trip to Herbies. Herbies is located in Clayton. The weather was nice but still chilled enough I opted to sit inside. There is a welcoming vibe upon entering. One is greeted with a dark elegant space that felt quiet and intimate. I cannot remember my server's name but he was cheerful and friendly. First, I ordered the Rum and Crumble. I was initially going with Autumn Fires, but was convinced to try the Rum & Crumble. The drink was great but quite strong! I had to balance it out with a little something else otherwise having not eaten anything prior to arriving I was going to end up tanking! For appetizer, I chose the flash-fried Brussel sprouts. I am not a fan of Brussels, but I am always willing to give a chance. These were flash fried, giving the leafy greens a nice crispy texture and mixed with pickled carrots and sambal. Honestly, while it was very delicious, I am still not a fan of Brussels. My own take away is perhaps chopping up the Brussels more than leaving them whole, it made them a little less enjoyable, and adding more of the sambal. The main event for me was ordering the scallops with the dauphinoise potatoes. The scallops were seared nicely and slicing through them was like butter. They tasted heavenly, little ivory clouds of silk that when dredged through the scalloped potatoes provided a rich, decadent bite. The dish also came out very hot which forced me to slow down but I felt so impatient! The whole experience is terrific and I look forward to becoming a recurring visit to Herbies! The lobster roll was terrible, could not have been real lobster. Had no flavor at all and too much mayonnaise. I would compare it to Captain D's quality if that helps. Not to have CD's to catch a stray for no reason lol. The fries were rock hard and cold. My companion had the everything omelet and potatoes. The omelet was a glob of eggs with sausage tossed on top, flavor was fine. No matter the price, I would not go back to eat. I would do a happy hour for drinks only and the nice staff. read more

Went for lunch today since weather was so beautiful we wanted to sit outside. Patio was very pretty. Our server was wonderful and very attentive. He kept coming back over to see if we needed refills on our drink or if we needed anything else with our meal. We both did the deal where we did the $25 deal. We could either get half of the soup or salad, an entrée and a dessert to go. My husband had the French onion soup and I had the half Caesar salad. My Caesar salad was not very good at all. It just had a ton of the Parmesan cheese you can get in the can at the supermarket, just dumped all over it. Much of my lettuce had turned brown, and it was not very appetizing to eat at all. Both my husband and I ordered the chicken salad on a croissant for lunch. This was a very huge portion, and large chunks of chicken in it. Although it wasn't my favorite flavoring of chicken salad, it was still very good and so big that I had a little bit left over. It also came with a huge portion of it, thin french fries, which were very addicting, excellent. Our drinks were refreshed frequently and as mentioned before the service was wonderful. When we were paying the bill, we each got a small brown bag with a dessert in it. I loved the approach because, come on, who doesn't like opening a little bag with a gift in it! I can't say for 100% sure, but when we ate it, it tasted almost like a lemon bar and had some chocolate drizzle and some blueberries on it. It was just the right size for an after lunch treat. The best patio dinner time with my friends! The server was attentive and took really good care of us! Everything we ate and drank was pretty much solid! I got their Pina Colada drink. It was not too sweet, and you can taste the alcohol, but not heavily strong. Just exactly how I like it! We ordered the Truffle Fries, Brussel Sprouts, and their corn dip for our appetizers, and they were so delicious! I am lactose intolerant, so I didn't eat the corn dip as much, but my friends loved it. For our meal, we ordered a steak dish, the salmon, and their burgers. Everything was cooked perfectly. I wanted it so bad ... to be like your Wellington you had in cwe.. First of all size.. wayyyy to big and served sooo bloody.. Puff pastry was not even cooked thru..mashed pot tasted days old. Pls let's retrieve that old petite good quality beef Wellington w the deep rich merlot sauce sauce and carrots... I spent over $100 on this entree and it didn't get the love and care it deserved... It literally wasn't cooked even after sending it back twice. I know this is below the quality owners expect. I walked in around lunchtime and immediately noticed I was the only customer. That should've been my sign to turn around, but I decided to give it a chance. I won't make that mistake again. Right after my food was brought out, a health inspector walked in. Not exactly the confidence boost you want mid-bite. Then I overheard the staff openly talking about how none of the produce was dated and some of it needed to be "put back in the fridge." That's not just sloppy, it's blatantly unsafe. We went after the Clayton wine and food festival and sat on the charming patio to hear the festival band still playing. Our waitress Bianca was terrific. We started with street Corn Dip which was addictive, I couldn't quit snacking on this! Had a great kick to it. Also had the Cajun crab cakes, which were equally tasty and a nice amount of crab and salad. The morel pasta was naturally amazing, though out of season the morels came from Oregon. When we found out that the Beef Wellington had returned to Herbies menu, we immediately made a reservation. This was a huge MISTAKE. When we arrived, we noticed there weren't many people already seated (first red flag). Once seated, we ordered our before dinner drinks and I was pleasantly surprised with their specialty dirty martini,....it was very good. My husband had a good beer. We started crab cakes and then salads. Crab cakes were pretty good Husbands mixed green salad was delicious. My kale salad needed salt and was subpar. Main dishes arrived and they were both cold. My 3 tiny scallops ($60 dish) were overcooked and cold and so was the buerre blanc sauce, the parsnips were raw so I flagged the server and asked to have another order with sushi grade scallops and cooked parsnips. I was told the parsnips were supposed to be prepared that way but was offered sautéed spinach instead, I said OK. Now, to flash sear 3 scallops should only take about 2-3minutes but I waited 20 minutes for another plate. The 2nd order of scallops were not improved. They were smaller, and the edges were almost charred. The spinach had so much garlic it was inedible and the buerre blanc was a cold gummy mess of overly salted goo that was also inedible. The sliced potato base was also cold. Nothing was good. Husbands Wellington was not hot and the potato side was a cold glob of leftover mash. We were polite to our server because we realize this was not her fault so we tipped accordingly. The only things good about the meal were drinks, crab cakes and husbands salad. I wanted to speak with the manger on our way out to find out what was happening in their kitchen but my husband didnt want me to say anything. I was tempted to tell adjoining tables to get out before they make the same expensive mistake as us. It was by far the worst, overpriced meal I have ever had and at $277 I was really mad. The Yelp response was some "trite" canned BS about returning to improve next time. This visit was a brunch for our family to celebrate the holiday season The menu looked great and we were very excited about our visit. The new location is very nice and the service was good. Bottomless mimosas were inconsistent with the first being quite good, but the next two being a bit orange juice heavy. We ordered beignets as an app for the table just to try them because one of the grandkids wanted them for their meal. Thank goodness we did because he took one bite and put the rest of that one on his brother's plate. They weren't even close to what a beignet should be and were likened to hush puppies by one person and soft pretzels by another. Two of the party had omelets that were less than wowing and the benedicts were the worst that I have had. Biscuits and gravy were good and everyone who had the breakfast potatoes enjoyed them.
