It was busy on a Saturday night, so service ran a little slow, but our server was friendly and answered questions without rushing us. We shared mussels, the beet salad, the soup flight, and the pot roast. Everything was good and tasted well prepared. The mussel broth was flavorful. The soups were excellent. The pumpkin and pear soup leaned toward a dessert profile but fit the season perfectly. The beet salad was not the typical style. The beets had a crisp texture you do not usually see, but the flavor was good and the goat cheese worked well. The pot roast was also solid with tender meat and plenty of flavor. Dessert was the coconut chocolate pie. It had sliced almonds that added some crunch and the portion was large enough to share. Drinks included the brandy margarita and the elderflower gimlet. Both were fine but the margarita was the standout. The cognac note gave it a deeper flavor. Overall, a pleasant dinner with good food and a cozy setting. I would return. This is the perfect spot to bring pretty much everybody, maybe not vegan, but plenty of options for vegetarians and pescatarians. A crowd pleaser. 4/5 because although it's good and solid. My husband and I shared several dishes -- mussels, pot roast, soup sampler, beet salad. All were delicious. I've been pretty lucky lately, and have been hitting 5 star places, one after another. Big Sky Cafe was one of them. Came here with a group of 8 women before a play at The Rep. Our server asked if we were seeing a play, and when we said yes, she kept us on track, so we weren't late. The food was FABULOUS and the cocktail I got, with the waitress's suggestion, was extremely good. We were seated at a large round table which made conversation easy and enjoyable. Big Sky Meal Deal . . . I'm a fan of Big Sky and I find their food delicious. Their service top notch. But I need to share our experience with a carry out Family Meal Deal. It was disappointing and not representative of our experiences in the restaurant. For my birthday last week my girlfriend decided to cater dinner for us with a Big Sky Family Meal Deal. She decided to order the Family Style Rosemary & Red Wine Braised Pot Roast. This is a dish we've enjoyed eating in the restaurant several times and it was delicious. Unfortunately, the carry out version was an epic failure. The beef itself was tender tasty. Beyond the meat it wasn't good. The dish (to serve 4) was packaged in a carry out aluminum catering pan, as it would be plated and served individually in the restaurant. Bad idea. The sauce over reduced and was pasty. The carrots, the few we could find, were over cooked and mush. The onions and celery has also dissolved into the thick sauce and becoming undistinguishable. The smoked gouda polenta wad so much cheese the polenta it over powered the delicate polenta. Over all, the carry out was a huge unexpected disappointment. This is not indicative of Big Sky and we will of course return. Ihope they take this review to heart and fix the problem which I think is due to packaging. In my opinion this dish needs to be deconstructed a bit for carry out. Package the components separately and allow the diner to reheat and plate when they get home. Doing this should solve the problem and offer the dish at home as it is served in the restaurant. Visit Big Sky if you haven't. It's one of the gems of Webster Groves and St. Louis. read more

Our first time at restaurant. The restaurant is tucked away towards the end of the street. Arrived around 7:45pm on a rainy Thursday evening. Restaurant wasn't crowded so they seated everyone in one section. The restaurant has an eclectic 90's vibe which was cool. We started with soup and we shared the Ozark Forest Mushroom and Asparagus Soup and the Chilled Roast Beet with Black Bean Soups. I enjoyed the flavors of the Ozark soup. It had lemon and arugula. The soup was brothy with a lot of depth. The beet soup surprised me on how great it tasted. The soup was creamy and it had goat cheese crème on top which added to the richness of the soup. Then we shared the Big Sky Cheddar Burger cook medium. The burger came with a brioche bun which was slightly toasted. The burger meat was tender and flavorful. Tried Big Sky after seeing the yelp reviews. Was looking for a unique lunch spot near an unfamiliar area for us and found Big Sky. Very eclectic atmosphere and bit outdated inside. Is located in same building as an assisted living complex and the lunch clients represented the location but was a busy lunch crowd. We really enjoyed the experience. My wife had Hoppin John's soup which she loved and I went for the Creamy Tomato Bisque which was equally delicious. We shared an original open face Ham with cheese sandwich with fingerling potatoes that also did not disappoint. Service was exceptional and quick. read more

I went to Big Sky recently with a friend, who during his only prior visit had gone during the lunch hour, finding it packed to the gills with people who lived in the senior living facility adjacent to the restaurant. That's always a possibility for this place, situated as it is on a quiet corner by the train tracks in Webster, but as far as I'm concerned, if living in that facility meant that I could daily in this place, I'd be in heaven. Friendly staff, attentive and knowledgeable about their ongoing and changing dishes, all of which are fresh, locally sourced, and frankly delicious. I had a sandwich that featured ham, a strong cheese, and some sauce so tasty that it erased all name and identifier for the dish from my mind. Sorry, folks. It was a Saturday around 11:00ish. Lots of reviews and lots with 3, 4, an 5 stars so was a little weirded out that there were only a few cars in the lot. The woman covering the hostess stand asked if we had a reservation. We did not. Strange as there were about 4 tables with diners. I went back later and read through some reviews and others had mentioned this, too. So, dining room was pretty empty and we were seated at a table in the middle of the room that was separated from another seated table by a pole. We were SO uncomfortable! I go to lots of places with community tables and I'm fine with that but when it's expected. This was not a community table and we were so close to the other table it was as if we were dining with them. I don't get this at all. Server was nice, she made recommendations. Food. I got the recommended Big Sky Benedict with potatoes. Potatoes were ok, kind of dry. The Benedict was perplexing. The salmon kind of melted on a biscuit and both were warm, the poached egg on top was ice cold. I was stumped but felt like the egg had to be cold on purpose. I didn't like it. I liked the beet pesto dip with crackers as well but honestly i'd rather just get another grilled cheese. Their special $7 happy hour menu was good - some items were listed "$7+1" on the menu which was confusing. Like just say $8 - this is happy hour and i am on my second drink i cant do math right now lol The service was awesome - I ordered a drink that was not my vibe after a few sips and when i told our waitress she brought me a new fall sangria and didnt even charge me for the previous drink! It's a nice looking place. The staff looks semi interested in what they're doing. I ordered a fish sandwich that was totally disgusting and had no flavor. I had to send it back. When I got something else like a burger it was cooked too much not really a lot of thought goes into their cooking here for some reason. But I saw that they had a huge martini menu. My server was absolutely perfect - he was attentive, informative and timely - I was happy to hear about his menu suggestions and definitely took him up on it. I started my meal with a fresh cup of coffee & Chilled Thyme Roasted Beet Soup. To say this soup was nothing short of amazing would be an understatement. I absolutely loved it and - while it is not on the menu currently - I would love to come in and learn how to make it (if they let me :)) it was perfection. My main brunch item was a Cajun Shrimp Benedict on Arepas - first off, it is so hard to find arepas around town, secondly, the Cajun Shrimp sauce for the benedict was so flavorful without being overpowering. The cauliflower was cheesy but not overly so. The brussel sprouts perfect w the feta. Only complaint was that the roasted veggies did not mention cheese in the description, but came with feta, which the person that ordered them hated. Love this hidden little gem tucked behind old Webster. The food ingredients are high quality, and they support local farmers. They offer many dishes with gluten free substitutes as well. Our waitress was friendly and very helpful with providing direction on options based on our palates. Thank you Bianca! And we were more than pleased with our Scallop entree. They were nice and big, cooked perfectly and the risotto, tomatoes and sauce were outstanding. Fresh and flavorful perfect for hot evening. We started with crab cakes from happy hour menu and were equally yummy, nice amount of crab. We also had the mussels which I've had here before and always nice sized meat, with delicious sauce to dip my gluten free (and gluten) breads into. The Purple Sky happy hour drink was a fun twist on margarita and generous on the pour. I always come back to this spot when I want a nice quality tasty meal that is unpretentious for a laidback date. The patio is quaint, small but tables are set apart so you have privacy. They could cram more tables in here so I am so appreciative they focus on a nice atmosphere versus more tables. We were very hungry and ended up ordering a lot of food for just two: the Goat Cheese & Fresh Herb Cheesecake, a Bacon & Egg Spinach Salad, a Big Sky Blue Cheese Burger, and an Open Faced Ham & Gruyere Cheese Sandwich. All was good. But our server didn't bother removing empty plates from our table until the very end. I started with a strawberry orange mimosa. It was heavy on the strawberry orange and light on the champs, so I ordered a glass of sparkling wine to help dilute the juice so it was less of a smoothie. I settled on the mushroom omelette. Again, just OK. I think others in the party were satisfied as well, but not blown away. The location is a bit hidden in the Old Orchard part of Webster. Kyle greeted me as I entered, and I told him I was dining alone and didn't mind sitting at the bar. He obliged me and escorted me to a very colorful tiled bar. As he got me situated, he offered me coffee, which I accepted. I told him, no brunch is complete without a Bloody Mary and I would like one of those, too. He recommended, Tito's for the vodka and that was just perfect, since it's my favorite. As he greeted other guest, I studied the menu and sipped back and forth between my two beverages. When Kyle returned, I told him I had narrowed it down two entrees. I was torn between, Big Sky Benedict and Cornbread and Jalapeño Gravy. Without missing a beat, he recommended the Cornbread and Jalapeño Gravy. We just meet and he knew me so well. I am a fan of jalapeños and as a farm boy, I love biscuits and gravy. Putting the two together, made for a winning combination. In addition to the house made cornbread and the tangy, spicy jalapeño gravy, it had Geisert Farm, Smoked Bacon and a fresh farm egg. What kept BSC from getting 4 Stars, is the cornbread was a little on the dry-side and I did not enjoy the Bloody Mary mix that they used. Wow. We've come to Big Sky twice now, and we agree whole heartedly that it is our favorite restaurant so far in our new city of STL. What a fabulous team and amazing new menus all the time! We've tried a few dishes, and I have to say the trout and salmon here are two of the best cooked and most flavorful.. melt in your mouth kind of fish I've ever had (not in my own home ). I recommend any of their fish dishes... you will not be disappointed what so ever. My husband really enjoys burgers and the Big Sky blue cheese (he tells me) is his favorite beef burger of all time. That's saying something for a man that's tried burgers all over the world during his deployments. Y'all, this is it. I had seen this place from 44 for quite some time and had always wondered about it, so I finally made the trip. I had Ellie's Salad which I had expected to be a dinner salad, but the portions were on par with a side salad and honestly didn't impress. My friend had the salmon and the portions weren't much either and it seemed like the waiter knew the portions were small to begin with. I usually believe that most restaurants have too large of portions and I'd rather them serve larger, so this is one of the few times where I'd have to say they underserve. read more
