If you like the Belmar, you will probably not like it downtown and vice versa. Unlike downtown, however, there is a definite dearth of other options for a similar venue. The result is an uncanny amount cross breeding. That being said, the music is not great but tolerable. The drinks prices don't always make sense but are cheap and buybacks are possible with enough good karma. People say it is hipsters that go there, but I don't think so. Just misguided youths. They don't know what a hipster is. I don't remember it like this when I was in school... Serious meat market. There is about a 2:1 guy to girl ratio and it seems most have gone home with most at one time or another. And if they haven't (or even they have), by the end of the night it gets pretty desperate with guys hanging (or more accurately "begging") by the bar waiting for their chance of one last quip for one of the pretty bartenders. Very fun and festive place. Always a blast. Lots of great "craic" (Irish for "good conversation"). The patrons range from colorful locals to college kids as the night wears on. It's the people, including the staff, that make this place so great. More laughs than just about anywhere. Wood paneled walls. Curved wooden bar. Very old and historic feel, a little divey but in a good way. Lots of Irish Whiskey going on here. They have some good craft beers on tap but they are often too foamy or flat or warm, and the pint glasses are really only 12 ounces, so beware. Very inexpensive for the typical pilsners, either in cans, bottle or on draft. They have cheap pitchers too. The food is really superb bar food, with a wide and ever changing menu, and great portions. Daily specials too. They are opened starting at lunch but the availability is erratic sometimes when the chef is not around. Try the wonderful burgers! read more

I have never been here on a weekend, so I have no feedback for the college students and weekend warriors. But I absolutely recommend this place for one thing: 50 cent Taco Tuesdays. For just $14, you can get a pitcher of some damn good IPA and ten tacos. They don't skimp out either, the quality and amount are pretty good for the price. Plus, if you're lucky enough to come on a less crowded night, the bartenders are really sweet and will treat you well. Some of the best service I've gotten at a bar, and I've travelled quite a bit. On top of that, for whatever reason, this place seems to attract a very friendly crowd. Less attempted hook-ups and more general socializing, as far as I can see. It's a top notch place. So if you're new to the area, be sure to visit. read more

Nice to know some things never change - this was my go-to spot when I was an undergrad at BU back in 2004-5 and glad to see the Belmar burger is still made the same way it was back then! The ceiling tiles are new, there's a new(er) jukebox, and the menu/draft list is more expansive but the prices and charm remain the same. As a whole... it's a hole in the wall dive bar. Looks old and run down on the outside and the inside is... rustic. It's obviously and old bar and there hasn't been a lot of upkeep and that's part of it's charm. That however, is not why you make the trip here. This place has amazing burgers. Two sizes and the SMALL is a half pound. Hand made patties and a few styles (home made pulled pork as a topping!) Slow grilled so even if they're slow it takes a little while, but so worth the wait. Pretty unattractive place to be honest. The owners stopped caring long time to make this a nice place. It reeks, the furniture is falling apart and the only thing that's nice about it is that you actually can breathe here aw compared to its sister pub (Fitzies). If I was the owner, I would ashamed to be associated with running such a bar in a vibrant town where it shouldn't be so difficult to run a nice one with so many students around. The exterior of the Belmar reminds me of something out of the seventies. A baby blue three story skinny building (with apartments on top), it stands isolated with parking lots of both sides. It has fantastic signage and also has the Irish flag painted on the front of the building. For the non-regular-bar-going-type, I was not sure what to make of the place. It's cool. It's a local joint. My first visit was on a tuesday, "Wing Night" judging by the large amounts of Binghamton students scarfing down spicy delights. I've been told its not usually a college hangout and has a lot of character. I would believe it. Reminds me somewhat of The Drawing Room out in Los Angeles, except with a Upper New York state flair. I plan on many more visits and hope to learn more about the place. Besides, anyone who rates a bar based on one visit can't really know anything at all. I guess that makes this entire review suspect, but heh, first impressions mean something too. read more

For Binghamton, this is the most tolerable bar to frequent while visiting your family. The crowd is in their mid 20's to late 30's with an upstate hipster vibe. Drinks are cheap, and it's open until all hours of the morning. It also sports a 3 to 1 male to female ratio. read more

I went to Binghamton for my son's university orientation and thought I'd only have a choice of corporate places like Appleby's or the like. I found this place on Yelp and it works for me. The Belmar is a WestSide treasure. A staple of Binghamton's traditional neighborhood bar scene, the Belmar has been serving up "the best burger in town" for a generation. It was great to see an old school burger selection, one I'd expect to see in a small Texas town, rather than on the sidewalks of Paris, fu-fu burgers are not the Belmar's thing, just delicious perfectly seasoned char-broiled burgers with house cut fries that are made of actual potatoes and potatoes alone. The salads, both potato and my favorite the macaroni salad remind me of my grandmothers and although I'd never tell her, even better. I stopped in on a Tuesday afternoon for a burger and a beer (which by the way they have 16 craft brews on tap) and the conversations both mine and the ones I overheard were so entertaining I stayed right through till the evening. I couldn't believe at somewhere around five o'clock I was told about "Taco Tuesday" they were selling delicious tacos, beef, bean or chicken for 50¢, not little skinny tacos either delicious tacos. The bar filled up with an awesome assortment of patrons, made me feel like I'd been going there for years, there was a sign over the door, "The Belmar where strangers become friends, and friends become family". I certainly understand why it felt like I was hanging out with a bunch of friends I'd known since highschool. Decent looking bartenders, or waitresses if you will. Some are better than others. If you like brunettes this is the place to go. A certain level of skankiness is involved in any dive bar, and a few of these girls possess it. The one's that aren't skanky are a bit more bitchy, but that's what you would expect from girls getting harassed and occasionally manhandled by local drunks for 6 hours a night. i don't go out drinking nearly as much as i used to, but when i do, this is usually where i end up, and it's also where i know i'll run into people i like. a few years back i would actually avoid going here because it was too crowded, but the crowds seem to have died down a little and it's much more comfortable now. they have a great beer selection and a nice back patio, and plenty of parking, which is a huge plus. it's definitely a dive bar, and that's what i love about it, except for the bathroom, they need to put in a stall for those who need to go #2. as for the food here, that's where this place shines. they claim to have the best burger east of the mississippi. the best? not in my opinion, i've had others equally as good, but it's definitely a great burger that you shouldn't miss out on, but if you order it, i would suggest getting a side other than the fries, the fries are one of the only not so great things about this place. they also have some of the best deals in town when it comes to their infamous weekly taco tuesday and wing wednesdays. while their tacos are nothing amazing, they do taste really good and they are better than what taco bell passes off as mexican food, and they are only 50 cents each! and on wednesdays you will get some pretty good wings at an amazing $4 per order, no one else does them that cheap anymore! unfortunately, you seem to have to be "in the know" to get certain foods here that they post pics of online. a lot of the stuff you see here is not listed on the actual menu. all in all, this is one of the better bars in the area with great beer and great deals on food. it has a very nice community feel to it and you'll run into some interesting people here. read more

On first entering the Belmar, the first thing I noticed was the smell...rather like backed up sewage and urine. The place, which is more of a midsized hallway than a bar, was extremely overcrowed, with what are known as "B"uglies", AKA Binghamton Uglies. After waiting for a ""ridicuously"" long time, because the bartender was too busy scratching herself to take our order. When we finally did get to order a drink, I got a rum & coke and my friend got a beer on tap. They both smelled and tasted stagnant!!! They Definately charge Way to MUCH to be serving disease. This place was totally HIT, and I wouldn't be seen there again if I was Paid!!! It's so gross you could get kicked out for washing your hands!!! A practice that none of the bartenders do by the way.
