After the trip, it was determined my husband could use a new back tire and gave us two options. He replaced it with Andrew's recommendation and told me I was still good to go for another 50 or so miles. The service has been honest, fast, reliable, and convenient given our proximity to the shop. Before moving back to Atlanta, I donated my bike to a neighbor & now on the hunt for a new one. Now, does it make lazy seeking an electric bike one may ask? Absolutely not, as Randy, the Store Manager said I will still get my exercise in, just with a little boost going uphill if need be. As someone with a special lower back, I would push through the pain, just now the limitations need to be embraced. Hence, coming here. Randy educated me on the various types of bikes from the weight, shifting, speed, battery, throttle & motor aspects of an electric bike. What I'm gearing (haha) at is the power-assisted pedaling & gear shifting bikes...imagine riding uphill & instead of stopping, possibly falling over, you shift from the handlebars to kick in the electric option & keep it peddling. Now, these bikes are not your average Huffy, Schwinn, or Mongoose bikes (I've had all of those) with those average prices ranging from $74-$200. The base price for one of the electric bikes that I'm considering starts at $2,800. I am ready for the investment as biking technology will allow me to continue my biking & enhancing my physical fitness simultaneously. I booked the Atlanta History Tour with Nedra pretty last minute for a birthday celebration. She was very accommodating for scheduling and provided an AWESOME tour. It is both refreshing and inspiring to meet someone who truly enjoys their job and brings such a great energy. Nedra has definitely found her calling! The tour started over at the Spindle. We met there and then took off to our first stop. I was extremely nervous as a beginner biker but Nedra assured me that everything would be ok. Once I got over my nerves, I actually started to have fun! We rode on the street and on trails (but never on the sidewalk because that is illegal. Who knew?) We stopped along the way at various locations where Nedra discussed the history with us. She was so knowledgeable it was crazy!! She knew the story of building architects, community meetings that discussed actions of the location, events, articles that mentioned the buildings, the artists that created the street art, etc. I learned SO MUCH and best of all it was FUN! Before ending the tour, we made our way down to the beltline for a popsicle to celebrate my friend's birthday. It was such an awesome treat! We even got lucky enough to stop and see a live band playing under the bridge. Nedra was so cool about letting us stop to enjoy the scene for a little bit. We ended up going over our time and never once did she rush us to get back. I am truly impressed by the level of knowledge, professionalism, and candor provided during the Civil Bikes tour. Good deal and works great. They even installed it for me. I took a spin around the parking lot, adjusted and set the mirror and they tightened it down. While there, I walked through the shop and was pleasantly surprised by their inventory. Great bikes and quality accessories. I need to go back and buy some more quality bike stuff - new helmet, lock and maybe upgrade my seat. Conveniently located in the heart of Sandy Springs on the SS Circle. Mine didn't *actually* make me do this, but I definitely heard this experience recounted narratively on multiple occasions. Anyway, that's what I needed to do regarding learning how to change a flat bike tire: even though $10 buys, say, three boxes of delicious cereal or enough gas to last me for a week, I needed to make myself fork it over as a donation to Diana, the very nice volunteer who led the Women's Bike Clinic at the Sopo Bicycle Cooperative this afternoon. I had never heard of them before, but now I am SO glad that I have. Seriously: how cool is a community bike shop? The shop itself is very difficult to find is you're not looking for it: go down the alley in between the Australian Bakery Cafe and the Blue Frog Cantina; the entrance to the bike shop is from the back parking lot. But one *can* find lots of neat information about Soco on their website. Their mission is "to create equitable access to cycling by providing no/low-cost bicycle maintenance services and education" and when they are open (7pm to 10pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday; 2pm to 6pm on Saturday) one can fix your own bicycle, help others, and gab about cycling. They also put on classes like the one I attended. In some respects I know a lot about how to be a recreational cyclist and bike commuter, as riding bikes has been a very important part of my growing up and my life as an independent-ish adult. But I didn't know exactly how a fixed gear bicycle works until I attended the class and I had only changed a flat tire once before in my life. The class was a little too basic for me (and the stuff that wasn't basic, like how to repair a broken bike chain, didn't interest me) but I greatly appreciated having the opportunity to meet some cool-seeming ladies and to learn more about the cycling community here in the ATL. Next time I need to have a repair done on my bike, I will likely bring it here even though Bicycle South is just up the street from me, so that I can learn while someone hopefully helps me. 'cuz let's be real, I am "so po" that the community bike shop donation scale (they ask for a donation of $5 to use the shop and tools and $5 per part purcahsed) makes my wallet happy. And I'm all about education and empowerment, so I value being helped by a community of cool folk to help me learn skillz that I can use myself and help pass on to others.
