    Waited to sit Down.

Upon arrival one family in front of us. Then six families behind waited for ten minutes to sit down. The front staff had no idea what to do. Apparently they need to have the kitchen caught up so they wanted everyone to have to wait. Tables are sticky. And the chairs are so so uncomfortable. Honestly worse service ever. You should never make customers wait to sit because you can't keep up. This place use to be good. Manager was part of the problem. She has no idea. Honestly they should NOT be proud of their service.

Food was very satisfying and hit the spot this morning. The server was a wonderful lady that was very good at checking in and keeping cups full. The ambiance of the restaurant was very busy being Sunday with church crowd but we got seated instantly and treated great.

Absolutely delicious and great location, we came up to see family in Topeka and decided to give The Big Biscuit a try! I am so happy we did. Staff were very friendly and quickly to get refills! Food was so delicious and the sweet tea was top notch!

    Big enough for 2 people!

We waited for over an hour after being told 5-15 minutes, actual service was okay, but not great, the hosts were very rude.

My husband asked about a chicken friend steak, so I Yelp'd and low-and-behold, Cook's is really close to where we were. I was raised in a small midwestern town, and this, folks, is a quintessential midwestern diner! I didn't snap a pic of the menu, but ordering is done at the register and all the prices are very reasonable. I ordered a coffee & western omelette, which came with a side of hash-browns and biscuit. The coffee, very standard diner percolator brewed stuff, was fresh and the perfect consistency. The food was served quickly by a cheerful waitress who came by a few times to continue to check on us. My husband was very pleased with his chicken fried steak, hash-browns, eggs and toast. My breakfast was well-portioned; not a huge plate but definitely ample, fresh and tasty! The best part of the experience for me what the cleanliness of the dining room. Not fancy- utilitarian carpet, linoleum table tops- but so clean, fresh and well-tended. It seemed busy for a Thursday morning; more than half the dining room was occupied, and the low storefront of the building is easy to miss, but I was confident these customers were regulars. We don't live in Topeka, but this is now my fav restaurant there, so I plan to return!

No need to dress up - it's a casual environment, with booths and tables and adequate but not glaring, light. And, they're open till 10pm. The general atmosphere is of a clean, modern diner. Think "fancy Denny's". When we went, around 1 on a Monday or Tuesday, the place was almost vacant, so by my experience, I'd say the place is pretty quiet too. The menu had a nice selection of sandwiches and diner-esque type food. Enough selection to feel you have a good choice without being overwhelmed. Mostly sandwiches, soups, and salads. I, as is typical of someone with a burger fetish, ordered a basic cheeseburger. 'Tis one of those basic foods I judge new restaurants on based on a previous set bar in my head. The service was pleasant and everything we ordered arrived fairly quickly and tasted fine, though it wasn't spectacular. Just average. The prices were about average too - $7-$9 a plate. I really wanted to fall in love with Madison Street Diner being a locally owned non-chain eatery, but I didn't. I imagine they make most of their sales to hotel guests and those passing through. Because of the lack of sensational food, this is probably not a place I'll frequent. Everything else about the dining experience was nothing to deter me though and if you like basic diner food give it a try!

My wife had the beef kabob with vegetables and rice and I had the chicken fried steak with potatoes/gravy and a side salad. The beef kabob was tender with delicious vegetables. The chicken fried steak was one of the best chicken fried steaks I have had with great flavor. The side salad was fresh spring lettuce and tasty toppings. The best however was last. We ordered a piece of strawberry cake for dessert. It was one of the most moist and delicious cakes we have ever had and was only $2.99! Full bill with drinks and dessert was $30 including tax and tip. With our $5 off from our voucher made it $25. We will be back. Staff was friendly, personable and ready to help.

The one question I have is why is it called The Wheel Barrel? I know a wheelbarrow, a wheel of cheese, a wine barrel, but I haven't figured out the name yet. If I make it back, maybe I can ask. The Wheel Barrel serves grill cheese/sandwiches and soup. I appreciate the concept and in this situation keeping it rather simple yet with some good selection for sandwiches and soup. I got a special wild rice and chicken soup with a half Baja turkey sandwich. It's a half and half for $12. I thought both tasted very good. I didn't eat quite all of it but I'd say it is a normal meal. Not a huge serving. I think most people would eat this in one meal. I think if I'm back in Topeka, I'll have to go back and do the traditional grilled cheese and tomato bisque! It was a busy lunch time meal. A nice size crowd was there. Service was still pretty quick. They have a rustic decor which is sort of like a wheelbarrow and a barrel. It's on a block that seems to be trying to add some art and culture to Topeka and I appreciate that a lot! If I'm back over that way, I'll stop back in and if definitely recommend it in Topeka.
