As a transplant to New York and Long Island, I had heard about the Big Duck, so when I realized it was along our route to Montauk, we had to stop. It's exactly what it sounds like--a giant white duck on the side of the road. There are restrooms, a small parking lot, and a gift shop inside the duck with plenty of duck-themed souvenirs. The employee was knowledgeable about the history and shared interesting facts while we looked around. We snapped a few pictures and continued on our way. I wouldn't plan a trip just to see it, but if you're already headed that way, it's a fun stop for some silly photos and a chance to stretch your legs. read more

This is a historical landmark so I thought we would pay this place a visit. The duck isn't small, but it definitely looks way bigger in pictures. There isn't much there, inside is a gift shop that is very small. In the gift shop they do sell rubber ducks, toy ducks, and magnets. However all the items seem a bit overpriced. Everyone should go see the big duck. This was the most eggstraordinary experience and great to learn about ducks' history on Long Island. Definitely try to go see this masterpiece when the museum next door is open; there is such amazing information. The gift shop was also great and had duck-lightful The Big Duck merch. We stopped by thinking that the Big Duck was just another quirky roadside attraction. Only after speaking to the friendly woman inside the duck did we come to learn that this guy is a part of architectural history! The duck was built in 1931, and the term "duck architecture" - when a building looks like what it sells - originated because of this structure. The inside is both a shop and a museum, and we enjoyed hearing about how the duck has moved a number of times & that they light it up for the holidays. They also have photos of other "ducks" from across the country, including the Big Chicken in Marietta, GA (where I grew up!). I was pleasantly surprised by this fun, educational find! read more

Visit Date: February 28, 2021 Recently I've been all about adventuring, seeing things I haven't seen yet or haven't seen in awhile exploring new places. So I picked the big duck for my son and I to go on one of our adventures. The gift shop was closed when we got there but it was still nice to see. Super cool touristy spot, it was my first time going. I thought it was bigger from pictures I saw. I had fun taking pictures. The actual duck was closed to go inside though, even though the hours posted said it should be open. I visited on Saturday, November 19, around 1:30 and there was no sign stating it was closed that day. read more

Quack quack...I dunno, I wasn't going to review The Big Duck, but I've been mulling it over and have decided TBD totally deserves its dues. This may not be a long review, but it'll certainly be...big (I'm full of bad jokes today). Maybe you know what I'm talking about because you live in Suffolk County or Riverhead or even drive down Flanders Road to get to work each day. But maybe you're a Nassau person or a city gal or an upstate boy or you come from another planet and didn't know there's a giant duck sitting on the side of the road out before The Forks of LI. But it literally is just a Big Duck. It's got all the kitschy, vintage, road-side attraction-ness you might be looking for and best of all, after you snap your duck-faced selfies, you can head inside! That's right, TBD holds enough room to comfortably fit a family of four. It also contains enough duck-based souvenirs that you could start your own duck farm (the original reason why the duck was built). That last parenthesised line was learned on my recent trip to The BD. Yeah, you can get your pics and duck memorabilia, but The Big Duck is also an information haven. Learn all about the history of this structure and even get some further knowledge while you're there. The employee inside (at least the few times I ventured into this mighty mallard) was super friendly and happy to share plenty of facts and info. It rounds out your stop and makes things ever so slightly more educational (if you were trying to get another facet from stopping here beyond the wonderful oddness of the thing). Overall, The Big Duck is a historic landmark (literally, it's on a list of national ones). Better yet it's become an icon of Long Island and from that, it's a stop worthy of making (if you ever find yourself out near the town of Flanders). Get some facts, buy a duck shot glass (don't judge), and enjoy taking a few pics of something not seen anywhere else. Like I said at the start, quack quack. read more

On the road driving through the Hamptons, you will come across a building in Flanders in the shape of a giant duck. I had to stop to take a picture. Inside, there's a small gift shop with memorabilia pertaining to this oddity. The Big Duck is actually on the National Register of Historic Places--it dates back to 1931 when it began life as a poultry store. My wife and I were headed out to Montauk, so of course we had to visit. I didn't realize how close it was to Riverhead, or I would have visited a long time ago. It's a big duck. Seems to be owned by the County or something. The duck itself is a gift shop (I think it used to sell eggs, natch) but the grounds are tastefully maintained, and there's a museum on site (bathrooms, too). Unfortunately, in late June, it was all still covid-shut, but that also meant that we were the only ones there (it was also a weekday). I had low expectations anyway, I just wanted to see the duck. It was more exciting than I thought it would be, but really, all I wanted was to see the Big Duck as a stop on our trip. It was not out of the way, and worth the detour. 5 out of 5 if you keep your expectations low. It's a duck. read more

We left Brooklyn from Long Island because my dad opened a supermarket in Hampton Bays. My 2nd uncle was a butcher and followed us out east to retire in Flanders. My dad's uncle bought a cute house a few blocks away from the water and also worked in the supermarket. During the summers, who do you think was produce boy?? Italians see their children as instant laborers, I was 13 years old in the supermarket union! haha But the Duck?? They used to sell eggs from this thing back in the day. It makes me laugh when people say they're sad when they see the duck, it brings back memories. It's like the Smithtown Bull, what memories? You drive past it at 60mph and say ah, the Duck. That's my memory, I drove by the duck and saw this thing every day during my summers in the Hamptons. The Duck shouldn't be shut down, Its been a symbol in Long Island for over 100 years. The Big Duck was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. Go Flanders! To get here from Sunrise hwy is a pain but if you want to take a picture with the large Duck, take a detour and find this big boy. read more

I would never forget the day I ducked in and took a gander at this marvelous piece of quackitecture. Foundation was solid and nary a quack despite decades of having been waded around. Now declared a landmark, this bird will no longer fly elsewhere as the duck stops here in Flanders, NY. Clearly, it was a privilege and and honor to to be part of the flock that witnessed such hallowed ground. These days, I look back and divide my life to before I've seen the duck... and after. If you thought Long Island was a suburban sprawl without a unifying symbol, think again. This 20-ft. tall, 30-ft. long duck says "Long Island" like nothing else. It was originally build by a farmer in the 1930 as a store to sell his ducks from. Now it's been moved to a park and has a gift shop inside (sorry, you'll have to go elsewhere to buy LI ducks). This is a perfect stop over if you're taking a drive out east to visit wineries or the Hamptons. The duck's always willing to pose with you and your friends for a photo, and is very photogenic. The Big Duck is currently located in Sears Bellows County Park and is slated to move (for a fourth? time) a few miles down the road this October 5th. Should make the evening news, at least on Channel 12. Christmastime, the county has an annual ceremony lighting a wreath around its neck, and it is pretty much a photo op for some local politicians, where some horrible childrens chorus sing carols and they give out candy canes, free coffee and watery hot chocolate. Last year, WALK FM was there, as well as News 12, and the mascot for The Long Island Ducks baseball team. The duck is rumored to have Model-T headlights for its red devil eyes. read more

The gypsy-esque duck has been a part of my life since I was a wee one, and it's one of my favorite sentimental spots on LI. The duck has moved - a lot. Almost more than I have, which is saying something. He's trekked to different spots in the Hampton Bays vicinity over the years, always welcomed with open arms by passers-by and local fans. At Christmas time, the duck wears a necklace of bulbs, and is adorned with twinkle lights. At Easter, baby eggs surround him (or come to think of it - her?). There's a gift shop within the duck's belly, but I haven't seen it open since appx. 1987. No trip to the east end is complete without a snapshot of you beside the duck - Riverhead's most famous resident. read more

But whenever I pass through Flanders on my way to Riverhead, the duck puts a big smile on my face. I once bought a lunch and had it behind the duck as there is a picnic area behind it. The Big Duck is DEFINITELY one of my favorite things about Long Island! I'm really jealous that I wasn't the first person to review it. There isn't really much to do here, it's really teeny inside and unless you want to pay the astronomical prices for Big Duck merchandise, then I don't really recommend bothering to stop. Although, if you're on your way to the Hamptons, perhaps overpaying for things isn't of your concern. When I actually did stop one time (my mom and I pass it on the way to the Tanger Outlets), the lady working there was absolutely NUTS. I guess someone who chooses to sell merchandise in a building shaped like a large duck probably would have to be a little crazy, though. I just realized that I didn't exactly give the place a sparkeling review. It's a building... shaped like a duck! It's awesome! That should be enough for you... I grew up in Long Island and have made countless trips to Riverhead for shopping and the optometrist and the DMV, but have never tired of seeing The Big Duck. read more

I only have one thing to say about the Flanders Long Island Duck... I hate the Duck! I mean really, who woke up one morning and said, "You know what Long Island needs...a BIG duck, right on the side of the road, because that will help my duck farming business and everyone will want to come see my 20 ft tall cement duck!" How much of your taxes go to maintaining and staffing this duck? Suffolk County owns it, so you can bet you're paying the salaries of the workers and upkeep of the big duck. The county is probably employing volunteer senior citizens who have nothing better to do then sit in the duck all day, reliving stories of the early 1930's and how Long Island was known for its ducks... and not paying them, and pocketing the cash to expense their expensive Mercedes and BMW's, Apparently, the duck was rated one of the seven wonders of Long Island...OOOOO, who cares? The only wonder about Long Island is the fact that they've managed to fit about 8 million people on an island that is 118 miles long and 20 miles wide. Feeling cramped???? read more
