The Big Legrowlski is split into two separate areas by a sliding door, with one part being the small bar / eatery and the other being a music venue. This review is strictly for the music venue section. If you look at my reviews, you'll see that I frequent a LOT of music venues, well, frequently. As a music destination, I'm sure many would like this, but I didn't care for it at all. Why not? 1. The music area is TINY (about the same size as my living room), and is basically a standing room only venue. There are literally a couple of chairs and one tiny table right in front of the stage (and against the wall facing the stage), so prepare to be standing if you see a show. 2. The volume levels are deafening (112 dB on my phone's SPL meter app with me standing beside the stage), which is far too loud for that tiny of a venue 3. There is a rotating red laser sort of "disco ball" which pretty regularly blasts patron's eyes out as the laser beam passes and enters one's pupils. It was difficult to find a location that prevented this from happening. Another low note for the evening was the single restroom in the area not having a "vacant / occupied" indicator nor any toilet tissue (not that I needed any, but I felt empathy for any who did need it). If you like music that's far too loud in a cramped and tiny venue adorned with all things Lebowski that seems to function chiefly as a personal performance space for the house band, you'll probably like this (and I'm sure some would), but it was definitely not to my liking. read more

We came here on Halloween, after the band had ended.It was a good house party vibe! Attending with a few party animals, it was a good time. We shut the bar down, hung out on the patio, hobnobbed with fellow revelers. The next time we went, our bartender was in an Hawai'ian print shirt and a jock strap. He served up fantastic cocktails and the vibe was pretty chill. read more

Super small. We came for a jam session open mic night. You had the choice of sitting at one of 6 barstools along the wall or outside. They did a good job getting the sound outside but you could really only hear the drums and bass. I had a rice bowl while I was there. The rice was delicious. I also recommend the White Russians. Came here to see one of my friends play in a band. You have to find street parking. The venue is pretty small but there is no coverage. Only one person was working the bar and grabbing drinks. That lady was working extremely hard. Since the venue is small, it can get crowded quickly and then it can start to get hot. Being small also means there are no bad views in the venue. I will come here the next time the band plays. read more

As soon as I saw that this place existed I knew I had to go. I've never had the chance to watch the movie and this was my perfect chance. Luckily Netflix had it and I watched the movie a week before coming. They have some tributes to the movie such as bowling balls and some of their cocktails are related to the characters. This is definitely a beer place as their cocktail menu is limited but do you know what they do have? White Russians. Duh. Could I even go here without ordering a White Russian? If not, The Dude would be disappointed. The White Russian was my favorite drink for a while until the half n half was getting a little heavy for me. I ordered one and then it dawned on me why it was my favorite drink at one point. It was so nice I ordered it twice. What a funny little themed bar to stumble upon. Was in the area and wanted to stop for a bit and get a drink. Stepped into this bar and was transported to another world, Lebowski style. Place is filled with Lebowski memorabilia & art. Given where I was, a White Russian was the drink of choice. Stepped into the other room and our group of 5 enjoyed a couple rounds of drinks. This place is interesting, a few high tops and a bar and a second room for music to play but not much seating. We came here bc I had a gift certificate, there seemed to be only one person working in a Friday night behind the bar (not even a bar back from what I could see) so the service was terribly slow. We weren't in a huge rush so didn't mind waiting but it was pretty bad. Seemed like a band had just wrapped up so there was a lot of movement in and out of the bar. I only found a fancy cocktail menu and looked like they had one beer on draft. We each had a dead flower which was actually pretty good, citrusy vodka type drink. They have vegan options! This is a great place to go for a night out with the girls! I went here and they had some games to choose from, and a stage! Live music was played! This is on the smaller end of bars, but I loved the atmosphere! I felt welcomed by the staff as well. The bartender was attentive towards my group of friends as well making sure we were safe! For those expecting a full themed bar and hangout, this is not the place. Upon walking in, you'll see this is a little taphouse with a few cocktails. Not a whole lot of seating but they have a side room on the left. There's open mic night there so be prepared, it can get loud. It does seem like a place for local musicians to get together and jam on those nights. You can bring your drinks outside to the covered tents and view the musicians from the window. read more

Unfortunately, didn't try any drinks here. We stopped in because we love the Big Lebowski (honestly, who doesn't??). Sadly, it was a bit of a letdown. First of all, I'm not sure if it's always like this downtown (I'm not from Portland) or if it's just because many businesses are still closed due to COVID, but this bar is in a rough area with not much foot traffic. Lots of car window glass littering the sidewalks, lots of homeless encampments. It seemed like a ghost town, other than those living in the tents on the street (ugh...where are the resources for these folks? Anyways...). I will preface this by saying I'm from the East Bay. I'm not a stranger to that kind of environment, so not much phases me - but I would be careful where I parked here. Of course, a lot of big cities are like this, but it just felt weird that not many people were around. Inside the bar, we were "greeted" by a sort of standoffish individual who demanded to see our vaccination cards up close. Which is fine, we were both vaccinated, but it did feel a bit odd handing over my card that has my medical record number on it. It's legal for them to do that, but just be aware of it if you decide to go maskless. We really wanted to stop in for a drink and some bites to eat. Nothing looked that appealing. The bar didn't really scream Big Lebowski to me. We wanted to get a shirt for our dad, who is a big fan of the movie. Sadly, they didn't sell shirts, and all of the merch had (keeping this family-friendly here) biological male anatomy printed on it? Like why is that all you have for purchase? Maybe because no one is buying that...it would be cool to just have some merch with The Dude's face on it, just saying. Anyway, we weren't that juiced by the initial impression and perhaps disappointed because of our expectations, so we left. read more

If you're into the whole brevity thing, they keep a running tally of every White Russian ever ordered. (I was numbers 9,877-9,880.) If you prefer it to be 100% electronic--the wave of the future--, there are bands that play in a side room. I get it. This story is stupefying. Loved this spot! Def had my moment as a Lebowski film fanboi in high school, and the artwork provided some good laughs. Also, i randomly found this spot while visiting from out of town. The night I went was an open jam session (Sunday night?), so 15 minute sets from whatever drummer/guitar/bass/keyboard/vocalist combo happened to sign up. The music was INCREDIBLE! I can't even begin to describe how good a lot of these sets were, from apparently folks who've mostly never played together before. Very fun, small and intimate bar - and probably one of my favorite bars I've been to in any city! They really did a great job with the theme and have a fantastic beer selection. I was surprised that they had a really good looking cocktail list too (featuring things other than White Russians) and ended up having a Bunny's Mojitoe, a hibiscus drink that was so bright and beautiful in color and tasted amazing - AND was quite strong as well!! The bartender was so cordial and gave us fantastic recommendations for the rest of our trip, and the little performance area looked adorable w/ a framed rug on the wall. They also have some really nice schwag, and my husband took home a cute t-shirt with cartoons of all the main characters. This is one of the few places I wish I could give more than 5 stars to. The bartenders, Laura and Alexandra, were AMAZING. My girlfriends and I came in on a weekday simply based on proximity to our location. We ended up coming back a few days later because we a) loved the drinks and b) loved our bartender. It's a quiet bar with both bar seating and tables. There is a private room in the back for Comedy Nights and Band Nights. They offer sooo many beers on tap - amazzzzing! A familiar destination such as Bailey's Taproom or Deschutes seemed like it would do on this trip, but I received a call from above leading me elsewhere that was like a divine intervention. I initially thought it may have been from Portland's Church of Scientology on 3rd and Oak (likely due to my uncanny resemblance to Tom Cruise), but nope, it was The Church of the Latter-Day Dude telling me that Dudeist Priests converge at The Big Legrowlski on Couch St. to fill their growlers and pound down some pints! I had some hesitance at first about entering, since I don't usually walk around with a growler on me, especially when I'm traveling (it doesn't seem to fit in the fanny pack very well). Fortunately, I was more than content with the 18 drinks they had on tap to keep me occupied. They're mainly from OR, WA, and CA, with several of them being IPAs. Sorry, no drugged White Russian Cocktails here though. The first taster is free, the rest are a dollar. Pints are $5. First up was a Pilsner. While I had no issue with it, I felt like something different this day. And then I found it. Upon sampling the 2 TOWNS MADE MARION MARIONBERRY CIDER (6% ABV) I was well on my way to converting to Dudeism. This cider was ripe and juicy, made with fresh-pressed NW apples and Oregon-grown marionberries, and in addition to being an amazing drink, was extremely easy to take in. That was made all the easier in a cozy taproom with a relaxing environment. I took great satisfaction in knowing that I was really drinking at a placed called "The Big Legrowlski." When a cover of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" by a male vocalist played in the background it felt like it was my destiny to be in this bar on this day. As my last drink set in, I realized they had all begun to have a cumulative effect on me. My mind drifted into a daydream in which I had visions of a sequence of events involving a stolen car, a case of mistaken identity, plenty of deception, and a young nymphomaniacal gold digging trophy wife named "Bunny," who it turns out has a hidden life as a porn star. I couldn't help but wonder if I was just recalling several twists and turns in the plot of The Big Lebowski movie, or if this was life imitating art and I was reliving moments in my own life. I had the bartender add some souvenir pint glasses to my tab to commemorate the experience, and headed back to my hotel room. When I turned on the TV and it featured stories about Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders leading in the polls for their party's nominations, I wondered if I had unknowingly consumed a drugged White Russian after all, perhaps from someone trying to give me a hot Cosby. read more

The Big Legrowlski is exactly what this part of town needed. A laid back bar with a rotating tap of quality beers. There are a few places to get a beer in this part of town, but they either have terrible selections, are too stuffy, too bro-y, or some combination. Big Legrowlski really hits the sweet spot. They've only gotten better as time has gone on. Their original floor plan made it a little difficult to have a small group there, but now they've removed the back bar and replaced it with some small tables. They've also expanded to the small space next door and that's really been great. It consists of some low chairs that are ideal for lounging and you can move them around to make a small circle. There is also a TV in there if you want to watch the game with your brew. When I was in there the other day I saw a DJ setting up. Not sure what the deal with that is. There are a wide range beers so everyone's taste is accounted for. They even have a couple ciders for the non beers drinkers and pounders of piss beer. Obviously the tap list is heavy on Oregon and California. There are either 15 or 16 taps. Like the name suggests, they also do growler fills and they back fill with CO2 for a fresher, better tasting beer. You're also allowed one good sized taster before your beer.The owner is a solid guy. read more

For being fans of the film, there was no way we could NOT stop in for a drink. The interior is dark and sexy. The overall bar is small and intimate. We stopped in around 2pm on a Friday, and sat in the entry area by the windows. I ordered the Finriver Habanero Cider, and my friend the Pfriem Wit. It was a perfect location to charge our phones for the day, people watch along the street - AND most importantly, it was a best time of the day to study for my Anatomy exam. It IS always more fun to see people's responses when you study genitalia in public, and doing it at a bar is extra exciting. I can see how this place would get absolutely insane at nights - and since it's a very small bar, it'd be packed. My suggestion? Stop by earlier in the day for a drink or two and then continue on your way. It'll be a more enjoyable experience. And I gotta say, the lighting in the bathrooms? I'm standing here right now, a cool atmosphere, nice cozy bar. 15 taps including some of my favorites like Boneyard RPM and Hop Venum, all brews 64oz growlers between $10 and $14. Wonderful tasting IPAs, not an IPA fanatic but I was happy with my choices. 1 free tester, $1 testers after that which is a great deal if you like trying lots of beers at one time and getting drunk for cheap! Breakside IPA, Pallet Jack, and I forgot the other beer were ALL very good! Highly recommended if you need a more chill place to be. The atmosphere here is really relaxing and friendly, the bartender is cool and the beers are awesome.
