The best omelette I've ever had and the potatoes were perfectly cooked. I would definitely go back there again.

I had lunch at the High Horse restaurant on the second floor on a Friday. This is a review of the restaurant and lunch only. They have some improvements to make which are attainable. On entering for lunch, the customer journey is unknown. We should not be an explorer without a map! In front of the stairs is a stand one would logically consult on seating. You would usually have a sign, which today should span languages, on seating. "Seat yourself" or see front-ofhouse person. But no, the stand in front of the stairs is not the front-ofhouse person. They are dedicated to providing utensils and napkins. How does a new arrival even know where the front-of-house person is? Restaurant 101. The front-of-house is behind the bar and not very attentive to new arrivers. New arrivers are your customers! That person is also the final bill person. By observation they seemed idle much of the time. Next, the upholstery of my seat was stained. Either clean it to invisibility or replace it. Any restaurant should check the condition of tables and chairs daily. At this level of restaurant, it is basic. We are not a dive. I was there for their loss leader crab sandwich special but ordered more, so I was not a loss leader customer. Bring a real napkin because a dish with small pieces will have small pieces fall out. The server from the kitchen brought small paper cocktail napkins. Instead I had to get a napkin and fork from the utensils and napkins cart myself. I guess, oddly, becoming familiar with where napkins were, thinking they were front-of-house, was useful in disguise! No refilling water. The dishes seem to be served by kitchen staffers. There was no checking on customer experience mid-meal or on billing. "Is/was everything OK?" Wow! I would have told them what I am writing. The menu was pretty standard today in items and price. I would say my sandwich was unnecessarily salted. I'm in favor of flavored by ingredients. I would say this is a fine hotel bar among many choices downtown. It is on the second floor, aside from the stains, pleasant, and there are public spaces in this hotel for meetups and meetings. But it needs a review of customer experience design, who does what, and the customer journey, stat. If Marriott is doing this nationally, they are failing. Good design is not expensive, it can operate at any price point. Maybe robots will improve things? None of the staffers should be blamed, it is design and management which are lacking. read more

This place is located in the Marriott hotel I believe on the second floor. When we first arrived the service was a bit slow to seat us m. The prices are a bit steep but it wasn't too bad. The ambiance is very slow pace. The food is pretty good minus the burger of the week. The steak was medium rare with red chimmichurri and it was good. Steak was tender and cooked just right. I don't think the chimmichurri was necessary. 4.7/5 I got the burger of the week which was goat cheese, prosciutto, arugula, and onions. The burger was gross. 0/5. The waitress replaced my burger with the western burger which was amazing. Everything was cooked perfectly and the flavors were there. Solid 5/6. read more

The staff were nice both times I went in. Since it's in the hotel, it was an easy choice! I first stopped in for a late lunch and had the salad which was one of the best Caesar salads I've had! I would not recommend the honey garlic chicken sandwich! The bread was very dry, as was the chicken. The breading on the chicken was not flavored like honey or garlic, just a faint chile, which gave it a weird hint of spice. Additionally, it was almost certainly burned and taking a bite of the chicken felt like I was biting into chicken bones half of the time I was eating. My experience was further hindered by the really slow service. I would probably eat here again if I had to, because I didn't want to leave the hotel at night, but I would definitely try something else next time. read more

As far as hotel restaurants go, this one is top notch. I arrived late at night and ordered the steak frites off the late night menu. So good. I especially liked it because I had ordered the same thing in Denver the night before and it was so bad! Definitely had a steak frites redemption moment. Our sever Ana was the absolute sweetest and provided us with exceptional service. The restaurant itself was clean and decorated in a modern way that gives cool lounge vibes. We're staying at the Bidwell Marriott in downtown Portland. The High Horse is on the 2nd floor. We've found the food to be very good, and we figured out a trick. The Bidwell charges a $30 "destination fee," which includes a $20 daily food and beverage credit. So we've used it to have "almost free" lunches. Yesterday, for example, my wife and I split a Cobb salad. The kitchen served it on two separate plates, each one more than sufficient for a single person. The salad was very good, excellent ingredients. Diced chicken, not processed deli chicken. Chunks of blue cheese along with blue cheese dressing. Large tasty bacon bits. Hard boiled egg. We added ice tea, and the total was about $32. Service was very good, staff friendly. The day before we split a smash burger with fries along with the ice tea, which totaled under $30. Add a tip, and it made a very pleasant meal, nice surroundings, excellent food, at a good discount! Not free, of course, since you're charged the destination fee whether you use the credit or not. But if we had eaten elsewhere, it would have been an added and unnecessary expense. read more

We visited High Horse thanks to a hotel credit from staying at The Bidwell, and we were pleasantly surprised! The food was far better than the typical hotel breakfast. The French toast was a standout--huge portions with fresh whipped cream and jam that tasted homemade. It was absolutely delicious. The PDX Breakfast was another hit, with perfectly crispy, well-seasoned smashed potatoes. The yogurt bowl was simple yet excellent, featuring fresh fruit, thick, creamy yogurt, and crunchy granola. Lastly, the breakfast burrito was fantastic, especially paired with their zesty lime/lemon salsa--it added the perfect kick! Prices are a but high, however if you have hotel credit, definitely recommend the breakfast. read more

I was down the street at a conference, and wandered into the High Horse (at the Marriott/Bidwell on SW Broadway) for an early dinner. I thought the price point for the burger (& fries) was high at $26. If the burger was not a pre-formed patty, and if the fries were hand-cut, I would have thought differently. I found the lounge trendy and a bit drafty. That said, the service was excellent. read more

I stayed at the Bidwell Marriott Hotel where High Horse is located for a couple of nights last summer. The hotel provides complimentary drinks during happy hour at High Horse so I took advantage of it. The free cocktail was a whiskey sour. I've never had a whiskey sour before and I was afraid I might not like it, but it was really good and refreshing. Plus it wasn't bitter, I don't like my cocktails bitter. For breakfast, I tried their egg, sausage and cheese on an English muffin and hot vanilla latte. The sandwich was very good. I was also shocked at how good the latte was. I just came from visiting Seattle and had a bunch of really good coffee there so I wasn't expecting much from a hotel restaurant latte, but it was surprisingly delicious. High Horse used to be a pretty generic hotel restaurant. Totally passable, slightly overpriced and kinda boring and safe. Things are starting to change. On my most recent visit the bartender eagerly told me that the chef is being allowed to experiment and do some pretty wild burgers. GOOD! This week featured the dumpling burger. A 50% pork, 50% brisket mix with pickled veggies, jalapeno aioli on an English muffin. It may sound weird, but the English muffin has the same ingredients as a dumpling and held the burger and tasted perfect. It even came with a home made "dumpling sauce" made of soy sauce and peppers. It was one of the best burgers, and for sure the most fun and innovative, that I have had in a while. I'll be bummed when I come back and it's gone. If you have been passing this by, give it another go, so long as they are still letting the chef have fun. read more

We are staying at the Bidwell Marriott for our first trip to Portland. The hotel gives a $30 food credit to use at the HH on the 2nd floor, so we decided to try it. The chicken wings are fantastic! Six come to an order, and they are large and crispy! Our server brought two dips, but honestly they were perfectly seasoned and delicious without any sauces. Dinner portions are huge! I ordered the King Salmon Bowl and I wish there was more spinach than I liked, the dish was tasty. My wife chose the poutine. We have never had poutine, but our waiter Jarrod said it was a Canadian staple. It was also a huge serving but wonderfully tasty!!! We also recommend the Old Fashioned for a cocktail. While the prices are steep, I would def recommend for anyone staying at the hotel. Bring a jacket or sweater, as it is a little cool inside. read more

We chose to eat here as it was the middle ground for us to meet up. I haven't been here since they changed restaurants. The interior was very nicely designed and had a great ambiance. The bartender/server was friendly and helpful throughout our meal. We ordered some wings and the pastrami sandwich to share. The wings were ok, not as crispy as what I'm used to. Kinda felt like the music/movie selection playing on screens didn't quite fit the vibe but the sound eventually was drowned out as more diners filled the area. We ordered cocktails, the dumpling week special of truffle pierogies with chestnut, cream, potato, chive, overpriced carrots and caramelized onion brûlée. Pierogies were amazing! This restaurant space at the Downtown Marriott has been difficult for the past 15+ years (Shula's, and a number of nondescript hotel restaurants) but I think they finally have a winner - it probably doesn't hurt that they're now adding a $25/day charge to rooms which can be redeemed as a credit at High Horse that incents hotel guests to drink/dine here. Regardless, the bartenders are friendly and great, and the food is really quite good across the board. I've dined at the bar (burger, chicken sandwich, etc.) and with groups of friends (just about everything on the menu) and everyone agrees that this is one of the better dining options available in downtown Portland today. Yes, we miss Imperial and some of the great places that closed during the past few years but High Horse is well worth a visit whether you're staying at the newly renovated Bidwell Marriott or not. In the evenings they play old cult classic movies on the 2 TV's above the bar, it's a very hipster touch which sets a unique Portland vibe but I do have to say that they may draw more people by showing sports on these TV's instead. In my case, I've gone a couple blocks away to The Independent many times to watch sports rather than kitschy old movies at High Horse but if you're a hotel guest I guess that makes them more money because they keep the $25/day added room charge. It's a strange thing, but overall the new setup has allowed this Marriott property to finally support a top notch restaurant and I have to say High Horse is worth a visit if you're anywhere nearby. Good ingredients prepared well and this is definitely one of the better restaurant options in downtown Portland these days, quite well done. read more

This must be very new, or a well kept secret... because this restaurant/bar delivers. I woke up early on New Year's day and went on Yelp to find a place open for brunch, and I found this place that opened at 7am. Naturally, I was the only person there as the west coast was still asleep or nursing their hangover. Cari poured me a mimosa and spoke highly about the chicken and waffles, which I ended up ordering. Delicious!!! The chicken goes through a 24 hour process to prepare it for frying, and the waffles are sweet and well balanced between crunchy and soft. Even the fruit bowl was great! Fresh with granola and honey. Cari and Miles provided friendly and warm service, and the bill did not send me to the poor house... ha! Get in there and tell them Mitch sent you! read more

The Bidwell is a beautiful boutique hotel in downtown Portland. The second floor is the High Horse restaurant and bar open from 4 until 10 PM. We came for happy hour from four until 5:30 to pregame. I ordered a hibiscus margarita and my husband a gin rearview mirror. Our drinks were as delicious as they were beautiful. These were those sugary disgusting mixes they were custom mixed & shaken.The menu looks delicious as do the bar snacks. Prices are reasonable and the atmosphere is fabulous.
