In Portland for a few days, I was looking for a breakfast spot that was comfortable and not too crowded. Enter Bullard's Tavern on the corner of SW Alder and SW 9th. It's a relaxing space - well-designed, with spacious half-moon booths in a room with floor-to-ceiling windows and soothing folksy blues on the sound system. I had the Bullard Breakfast and went the virtuous route with the avocado option. Beautifully presented, served with a trio of condiments: butter, jam, and ketchup. The potatoes were delicious. One star off for the cold, rock-hard toast. One surprise on the way out: a "Kitchen Appreciation Fee" of 3% appeared on the itemized receipt, but not on the menu, the website, or any visible signage. I came here alone for Thanksgiving - and I don't know if it was because I was alone, but the staff were so sweet and attentive and very kind. This time we sat in the dining area with a view of the kitchen, which for a foodie like me is always fun. The action and fast pace in which they work to create so many incredible dishes is amazing. We started with cocktails and shared a roasted beet salad that was served over peppery arugula, to balance the sweetness of the beets, with whipped goat cheese, candied cashews (a deviation for the more common candied pecans) and Cara Cara seeds. the maple bourbon vinaigrette fought it all together - crisp, sweet, savory with texture - the perfect salad. Along with a bottle of red, we each enjoyed our own main dish. My friend had the salmon and absolutely loved it. Craving meat, I ordered the pork chop when my first choice, the steak, was sold out. No worries, it ended up being the right choice! Cooked to perfection, the smoke added a distinct flavor element without overpowering. The sides of roasted potatoes and asparagus, the perfect accompaniment. For desert, we opted for espresso martinis to cap off a perfect meal. Ambiance is dark and cozy with plenty of bar seats if that's your thing. I had completely forgotten about Bullard so I was thrilled when my friend suggested it. Oysters brought us to this place and were on point--they were so good that I didn't even get a chance to take a picture. Frankly, everything we ordered was delicious and the carrots stole the show. It had a nice glaze with a little heat and I appreciated the pairing with pumpkin seeds to provide the crunch that you don't get in the same way from the cooked carrot. Its located in the bottom floor of a hotel but had it own unique vibe and ambiance. I also appreciated the host holding onto my luggage since I was going to the airport after dinner. My group of 12 friends and I had a reservation at this restaurant at 8:00 pm. It is part of the Woodlark Hotel located in downtown Portland. The ambiance of the restaurant is very warm and service is very good. There is a substantially sized bar right in the middle of the restaurant. I ordered Coho Salmon entree with an additional side of the Grilled Carrots. Both dishes were excellent. The salmon was perfectly cooked and the carrots had a smoky, sweet, spicy taste. So good, I had it twice! Bullard Tavern is conveniently located inside of the Woodlark Hotel. The restaurant has a dark and moody aesthetic accompanied by low lighting. The first night I went, I had the smoked chicken wings, a margarita, and the Bullard fries off of the happy hour menu. The smoked chicken wings were plentiful, which came with 3 big wings. These wings were very messy and sticky accompanied by a sweet and spicy flavor. They had a good flavor, but I wouldn't get them again due to the messiness of them. The fries on the happy hour menu were huge as well. The fries came in a big bowl, which is plenty to either share or eat by yourself, if you're really hungry. The next day, I ordered a spicy margarita and the San Antonio smoked half chicken. My margarita was delicious, but main dish was outstanding. This dish is perfectly made with well-balanced and bold flavors. It's truly something magical (my mouth is watering thinking about this dish). Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed my dining experience at Bullard Tavern. From the crafty cocktails to the unique food selections, I had a great experience. Bullard always makes for a really nice experience. While a bit on the pricey side, the selection is fantastic and atmosphere very relaxing. Cocktails like Hey Darlin' hit me as something you take your time with. The bartenders really put work into them. I liked the tart of this gin. Smoked Salmon Dip is no joke. I'm told all of the seafood here is exquisite, but salmon has my love for this visits appetizer. I want to come again to try their Dungeness Deviled Eggs. The Rainbow trout may have only been a summer menu, and I'm glad I ordered it because it tasted like heaven! I really enjoyed how the outside area of this spot is gallery of old German relics from books to clocks and small antiques. Such a delightful experience! My friend and I were visiting from out of state and this restaurant blew us away. The steak is grass-fed sourced and the ingredients were of the highest quality. I recently had the pleasure of visiting Bullard Tavern with my wife for lunch on a wet January weekday. While the street parking wasn't bad when we got there, there are plenty of paid parking lots nearby for those who don't want to be bothered by the construction that's been happening on the streets around the area. From the moment we arrived at the restaurant, we were greeted by friendly staff and were seated quickly even though we didn't have a reservation. The ambiance was great and the waitress was extremely helpful in helping us pick out the perfect menu items. The only downside was that the seats were a little too close to each other, but hey, we were literally arm's length from other people eating, so it was still quite enjoyable. For drinks, my wife had the $13 Bullard Mezcal Margarita, which was strong but nice. I had the $15 smoked chicken lettuce cups butter lettuce, chipotle crema, apple, celery, peanuts. This is found in the snacks and small plates menu. This was refreshing and delicious if you want to have a light meal or on a diet. Wife had $18 fried chicken sandwich with pimento cheese, pepper jelly, shredded lettuce, brioche bun and fries form the plates section of the menu If you're looking to experience Bullard Tavern, I would recommend going on a weekday since the area can become quite crowded on the weekends and in the evenings. Why the hidden fees?? Why am I charged 3% for "bar appreciation" when ordering drinks? Why am I charged a "lit" fee on my smoky old fashioned that is described as smoky on the menu for $18? I'm more disappointed that I noticed this after paying and tipping. How many times have I done this and not noticed?? There is nothing on the website or menu about these fees. What a bummer. I am 90% certain the pie came from Lauretta Jean's which I was super happy about because that was the one spot I didn't get to hit up this time in PDX. No words other than it was so good. Rsvp recommended. The restaurant is located inside Woodlark Hotel. Nice dark ambience. Good environment for business or date, or causal. Awesome brunch and friendly service! We saw that Bullard was on a list of top brunch spots in Downtown Portland so decided to check it out. We started off with some coffee and the Bonnie McMurray (bourbon-based with sherry, walnut bitters, and more). There's an extensive cocktail menu, even for brunch, so make sure to check it out! Next, we got the Seasonal Pop Tart, Summer Vegetable Shakshuka, and Loaded Hash Browns. The pop tart was somewhat underwhelming but still alright. I would've liked more brown sugar filling because it wasn't evenly spread out. The shakshuka was really good -- it wasn't spicy, but I liked the range of vegetables and generous amount of feta. The hash browns were great, too. The staff members were all very kind and friendly. Expect free coffee and constant water refills.
