I was so excited to try this place and left very disappointed :( I booked a couples massage for my husband and I's anniversary. First of all, I booked online and didn't receive any sort of confirmation email, text, call. I even called the day before to make sure the appointment I made existed before I showed up and no one answered the phone (but I was able to verify via text thankfully). With this being our first visit, I was expecting instructions on when to arrive, maybe parking information, attire or any general instructions but received nothing. When we showed up, no one was there but the door was unlocked. We awkwardly sat down and waited until one masseuse showed up about 5 minutes later and helped us fill out forms. For the actual massage, mine was fantastic! The masseuse was great, I left feeling super relaxed and less tense! But his hardly qualified as a "massage". The masseuse was bending him into weird positions, doing resistance stretches and talking continuously the entire time. Let alone the questions/scenarios being said for these stretches were odd, it even prevented me from fully relaxing because I was just so confused as to what I was hearing and why we had such different experiences. What was supposed to be nice reset for us on a special day, just feels like a waste of money. read more

Bought gift certificates there to add to my daughter's graduation card. (I was told by several locals it was a good one.) When I visited it was a very relaxing space and had a really good vibe. The person at the desk was the actual massage therapist and very knowledgeable. It's located in a very nice area of La Jolla so prices were on point for the location. They also offered an online introductory price for first time visitors which was outstanding! Overall the process of buying the gift card was easy enough. I followed Diana from her previous location. This one suits her, and me, much better. The staff at Bird Rock is patient, helpful at every turn. Scheduling is flexible and easy, even with changes that seem to pop up - excellent communication via phone and texts. Diana is a gifted massage/therapist. She helped me pre- ad post- surgery for knee replacement, with helpful suggestions for at home care. Instead of one size fits all, she listens to your input and adjusts accordingly. This tailor-made, individualized approach doesn't seem that common elsewhere, but it's Diana's m.o. Makes a huge difference. I got a prenatal massage at 35 weeks with Lori and she was incredible. She opened the door for me, greeted me right away, handed me the health questionnaire, and offered me water. The studio is super cute and has a very welcoming and comforting vibe. Lori's pressure was perfect throughout the entire massage and she even gave me tips to help with some of the symptoms I was having. She was very in tune to my body's needs and worked out the tense areas I had. Will definitely want to come back to see her after my baby is born! read more

However Their customer service is great, after my review they called me and talked with me about what happened and asked if i would be willing to come back for a complimentary massage with a different masseur. This go around based on my needs they recommended a couple masseurs i should see. I ended up seeing Diana and she was great. Really listened to what I needed and focused on those areas, she was receptive and made the proper adjustments when I would ask for more pressure. I'm grateful for them being understanding to my concerns and wanting to make my experience better. Overall the second visit was a much better experience. read more

Update: The studio apologized for the experience and refunded my money. They called me personally to speak on the points I brought up in my review. I give them high marks for their service after the fact, so I've updated my review to 3 stars to reflect the resolution. Original review: (1 star) I had high hopes for this massage and it was worse than I could have imagined. I've been in a lot of neck and shoulder pain for a long time and my old bodywork place no longer had any of the therapists I'd seen in the past, nor any convenient appointments. After many false starts I finally called Birdrock Massage and got a very helpful person on the phone who found a time that would work with my limited childcare. I told her (she was to be my masseuse) that I needed some bodywork, not just a massage, some deep tissue etc. she assured me that this would not be a "fluff and stuff" massage, but rather a therapeutic massage with myofascial release and deep tissue work. Relieved, I booked. Before my massage she called to ask if I could come 15 minutes earlier because she had an appointment at 3. Unfortunately, my childcare didn't allow for that, but I assured her that I'd get there as fast as I could, and then trying to be accommodating on my end for whatever reason, I said I'd be okay if we needed to end 5 or 10 mins early. I arrived 10 minutes before my massage with my paperwork prefilled, to find that unfortunately the bathroom wasn't in their facility, but unfortunately around the corner outside around the Starbucks. I always have to pee, and I was disappointed that there wasn't one inside, as my last place was the same too. I was hoping to find somewhere that I'd be more comfortable the next time I'm pregnant, as I often have to pee to be comfortable, mid massage. But I'm not pregnant right now, so this wasn't a huge concern. As the massage started my therapist felt my neck and shoulder and felt the "problem." She began to do myofascial release, and said, "Let me know how the pressure is." I immediately replied that she honestly couldn't press too hard on me. She replied that she starts out this way as she's found that this doesn't bruise the muscles, then she goes on to do deep tissue, and then she does a bit of "fluff and stuff" at the end for a nice ending. I said Ok, I'll follow her lead as she's the professional here. And did my best to relax so that I'd be fully ready for the relief that the upcoming deep tissue would provide. It never came. At what must have been 30-40 minutes of what I would term "skin touching" or "gentle stroking" rather than massage, I was practically crawling out of my skin and ready to get up and leave because I was so bereft that I wasn't getting any relief at all even DURING the massage. I wasn't expecting to leave there feeling perfect, but I hoped that it would feel at least good or nice during. I realized I hadn't given her a chance so I spoke up. "Is there any way it can be harder?" "Oh, yes." She replied. "I just didn't know if I was hurting you." She was worried about hurting me with her gentle stroking???? But also, she didn't know how I was feeling because she had never once checked in with me since the beginning. But I replied, "Oh definitely not at all. It can be much harder." "Okay!" She said, and proceeded to press about 0.001% harder. I. Kid. You. Not. There was NO difference in pressure. I almost started crying right then, because I was in so much pain, and it was so hard for me to get any child care, and I was spending $100 of my money for something that wasn't going to help me at all. When the massage finished a bit later I couldn't leave fast enough. I was so disappointed in myself for believing that this massage would have been anything other than a relaxing ritzy touch. I just thought from all the reviews that I read that I'd be in good hands. But if you have acute pain, this is not the place for you. I couldn't leave fast enough. I got to my car and cried all the way home, because I was upset that this hadn't been a step forward in my pain, and that even if not it hadn't been a relieving hour of my day. It was literally stroking. I have never wanted my money back more in my life. In fact, my neck and shoulder hurt MORE when I left, because there was no relief provided during the massage, no relaxation of the muscles, no working out of the knots. Holding my head in the cradle for an hour, without any relaxation happening during that time made me much worse upon leaving. I want to reiterate, if you're in pain, this isn't the place to get therapeutic bodywork. If you want a nice relaxing body touch, then this place might be fore you. tip. read more

If I could give more stars I would! I saw Trish for a deep tissue/sports massage to get ready for the Tough Mudder. I saw a masseuse yesterday and he didn't do anything that I needed. In one 60 minute session, Trish addressed my Achilles, calf, hamstring, ITB and hip flexor pain and provided some stretches as well that completely relieved my pain! Now I am not scared to run and can run/workout pain free. I HIGHLY suggest Trish to anyone in need of a sports/deep tissue massage, she is very thorough. read more

I randomly walked into this studio to see if they had any availability one night as I was wasting time on a trip and was totally stoked they had an opening! The massage therapists at this studio are amazing!! I went back two days in a row simply because I had such a great experience!! Everyone I interaced with at BRMS were incredibly kind and helpful. The second day I went the therapist even stayed an hour later then she was scheduled for to get me in as I was flying out the next day! I love going here! I just had my 3rd massage here. First two was with Nina and today was with Denitsa. For the price, you can't beat it. I love having the option of a 2 hour or 1 hour massage or somewhere in between and its so easy to book the appointments online. Parking is fine if you give yourself plenty of time as the Bird Rock are can get pretty busy. I would give the studio 5 stars if it was a little quieter. Clients who are waiting for their appointment or are checking out in the lobby forget to use their "inside voice" and ruin the tranquil experience for the rest of us. A-MA-ZING massage from Nina!! I get massages at least every month for years now, and she is hands down the best therapist I've ever had. She is very knowledgeable about all the muscle connectivity and takes the time to understand your needs. I've had a right lower back pain for 6 months and she fixed it! Even better than my chiropractor. I feel better than I've felt in a long time- much more balanced. She's very in tune and a magical therapist, really! I was disappointed with the 60 minute massage I received. Starting with it being under 60 minutes. My appointment said 9:45am - 11am. I assumed there was time included for check-in/prep and then buffer time for the masseuse. I showed up a couple minutes prior but with check in, getting undressed, and then the massage actually starting it was probably closer to 9:50 but my masseuse stopped at 10:45 on the dot. 5 minutes isn't a huge deal besides the fact that she said she didn't have enough time for my feet which was an area of focus I requested. Other areas included my traps/back and hamstrings. There was a ton of time spent on my back which I appreciate because I did have knots. However, when it came to my hamstrings, there was only pressing over the sheets and no actual rubbing of my hamstrings. It was very strange. I was also being shaked/rocked as this area was "worked on." At first I thought it was loosening it up like she did for my back at first but that was all the attention they received. I been here about 3 times. The first time the massage was good. I was so excited to find a great massage location near by I made the appointment with the same person and the massage was not good at all. I decided okay let try someone else and the massage was not good either. In the last 2 visits, I probably had some of the worst massage that I have every. I kept hoping it both times would be over. We came here for a couples massage. We had appointments at 9am, but since this was our first time, we didn't realize parking is terrible-- get there a little bit early, especially because of parking and having to fill out the little form and changing, etc. I had Carly and my husband had Lori - both were excellent. Sometimes after a massage, I feel more exhausted, and after this, I actually felt rejuvenated. I have a calf injury and Carly was gracefully able to avoid that area completely, per my request. After, they also both informed us of the parts of our body that were extra tight. Very interesting stuff. The only reason why I took off a star is because our room was right next to the Starbucks stock room. I kept hearing talking and banging around. When I mentioned it when we checked out, they said it was pretty tame during our session. So, imagining it being louder is kind of concerning for me, because I definitely would like to return.
