I started my visit to Duplin Winery at The Bistro. I entered the shop instead of the restaurant, but wasn't told I made a mistake, and was just directed to where I needed to go. I was told to go through the exit door, so that is how I knew I missed the correct entrance. Before I got to the restaurant, I admired the decor outside. The water fountain display with the red wine, and the other decor. They created a welcoming atmosphere. When I entered the restaurant, I was immediately taken to be seated in the dining area. The high ceilings and attention to the little details were noticed. The grapevines interwined with the twinkle lights were a nice touch. I enjoyed the space between the tables too, so guests didn't feel on top of each other. I was told that much of the wood used was repurposed cypress, which adds to the authentic rustic charm. I was offered a sample of wine, but they only had alcoholic versions, so I was given a glass of water. I went with the citrus salad with grilled shrimp, and the waitress made sure the raspberry vinaigrette dressing was on the side. The salad had fresh mixed greens, grilled shrimp, avocado, tomatoes, pineapple and feta cheese. I really enjoyed the avocado in it, as it added a creamy texture. I did get to order the scuppernong non-alcoholic version with my meal. It came out in a plastic cup, though, rather than a glass. So that was a little disappointing. My waitress was friendly and attentive, and was the one who mentioned the World's Largest Adirondack Chair to visit, so I appreciated learning of another stop to add to my list. The Bistro at Duplin Winery was a great experience. I am usually a little hesitant to visit a winery as a non-drinker, but I liked that Duplin Winery offered non-alcoholic versions, so I could enjoy the flavors too. read more

We had a reservation for a large party (15) for a Christmas party. They were ready for us when they opened for lunch. Crackers and a whipped cream cheese made with a muscadine jelly/relish available in the gift shop next door was tasty. All of our food came out at the same time without mistake. No complaints. My salad was fresh and delicious. My husband's wrap was great--you can't go wrong when bacon is involved. Others had Rubens, soups, and burgers. Our server was calm and competent. Our water, wine, tea, and coffee cups were kept full. There was no rushing us out as we enjoyed games and exchanging gifts. Unique indoor restaurant all decorated for Christmas. There is a stage with Christmas shows, but it sounded like they sold out early. When I find myself in Rose Hill, NC, I can see eating here again if nothing is cooking in the worlds largest frying pan down the street. read more

I was in the area doing some photography and decided to try this place for lunch. I arrived in the late afternoon, so the dining room was pretty empty except for maybe four tables of guests. I ordered the Reuben sandwich and fresh fruit. The sandwich was really good (very tender meat and moist) except by the time I got to the second have, it was hard to pick up and and hold. The bottom bread was soggy, but I managed. The wines they serve are sweet wines. I'm not into very sweet wines to the waitress helped me select one that was the driest. It was okay, but I personally wouldn't order their wine. It's just not my kind of wine. I didn't care for the fruit. It tasted like they were canned fruit cocktail. Too sweet and had an odd taste to them. Good service. Decent prices here. Overall a good place for lunch if you're in the area. read more

A well managed local Bistro, is evident as soon as you enter their huge wooden front door. You will be greeted by personable receptionists whose job it is to make you feel welcome. The building is a metal building, but the interior is fashionably decorated with tiny white lights, grapevine garlands and seasonal wreaths. Within minutes of being seated, a server will appear bearing complementary dip and crackers, and a taste of a special wine. Those complementary gifts immediately set a stage for an enjoyable dining experience. The server then fully describes the daily special...in delicious detail. They make the special sound so good that many don't even read the menu, opting instead for the daily special. Today however, I had been thinking about their really spectacular Angus Burger with bacon and cheese, to which I ordered with it (wait for it) ....fries! The meal arrive about 10 minutes later, and it was what I'd been hoping for since I saw the Angus Burger highway billboard a few miles North of the Bistro. This is one of those burgers that would be nearly impossible to properly cook at home...the bun alone seemed to be baked in-house...it was so unusual. The side of fries was perfectly cooked...crispy and delicious. Lastly, they have the best iced tea you will find anywhere. So to recap, a delightful solo lunch was enjoyed by yours truly. You should try it yourself (hopefully not also solo), as I am certain you will start a chain of many super-enjoyable lunch occasions. Of course, remember that The Dublin Winery is next door! Well, this was supposed to be a good experience but not so much. First off, online it is listed to close at 3:00pm, but it closes at 2:00 due to an event. This was not listed online. Secondly, Bert Fussell is a poor excuse of a General Manager/Executive Chef. He needs to go through a management course or two! I ordered a grilled cheese pimento sandwich not a toasted pimento cheese sandwich. The bread was soggy, and had a ton of unmelted pimento cheese. I wanted it to be grilled/melted more! I expressed this to the sales associate. The manager was outside! He came to the table with an attitude to inform me this is how their sandwich is made. I tried to express my feelings, but he told me that "this is how we make it". I asked for my money back. He snatched the food and said give her the money back. I had tried to give the food back anyway. I did not want food that everyone was looking at and pointing over. Of course, I tried to talk to a manager, but he is the monopoly. Evidently, he has had other incidents with customers. Is this how you treat all of your customers????? I cannot rate the food, but the overall customer service sucks! If you have read any of my other reviews you probably read that I am fair and practical. I say this because I had a very poor experience at this place. I ordered a simple soup and Caesar salad and a side of fries, like you do. The soup was wonderful! Very tasty but I didn't like the salad. I wasn't going to say anything, but my friend did for me. The server took it away and the manager came back and asked what I didn't like about the salad. I didn't go into detail, I said it was no big deal. But I felt sort of confronted. He wanted particulars. I mentioned that there was meat on it (not anchovies) and that I didn't like the dressing. He said ok, but that he wasn't taking it off of my bill because I ordered it and it was per the description in tue menu. From age 16-31 I waited tables. I have NEVER had a manager not take something off of a bill because a guest didn't like it. But OK. I didn't ask to have it taken off. I just said I didn't like it. What I didn't like was tue feeling of confrontation and having to justify my dislike. FYI: tue bacon or ham or whatever meat was on it did not appear to be cooked. And the dressing was just lasers on top of the salad, not mixed to coat the salad as is the case with MOST Caesar salads. Also, I never got my fries. First it was "oh, they are coming". Then it was "oh they didn't print on the ticket" then it was "the fry guy is new". My companions were done with their meal when the 3rd excuse came... I asked if I could have THOSE taken off of my bill. Hopefully it was a bad day and a one time thing. read more

This is the bistro right next door to Duplin Winery. Although it was the second time I've been to the winery, it was the first for the bistro. I was in the area with my husband, visiting his family in nearby Jacksonville, and we took the MIL along for some wine tasting for the day and this was the last stop wine before heading home. After a great tasting next door, we were able to take our glass over to the bistro and decided to have lunch there. We were intrigued by the country fried pork chops so we decided to try them out. I saw on their menu that they serve fried green tomatoes so I decided to try those out with the MIL since we never had them, on my husband's insistence. They came out, fresh out the fryer, and very crispy; they went excellent with the sauce served on the side. Then came the main dish: southern-fried pork chops! Two perfectly breaded chops served with green beans along with rice and gravy; the chops were well seasoned and juicy with the right amount of breading that was perfectly crispy without being oily. The green beans were cooked to perfection and you could tell these didn't come out of a can. The gravy that was served over what looked like wild rice was very flavorful without completely overwhelming the light flavor of the rice. I was only able to eat one of the chops but made a nice snack for later. Great food, even better service, and next door to a awesome winery?! Who can say no to that?! If you're ever in NC doing the winery tour, give this place a try! read more

For an anniversary celebration, my wife and I decided to take the 100 mile drive to Duplin Winery and do the works. We arrived at 12:30 pm and immediately strolled to the Bistro for lunch. I loved the atmosphere- stoic-angled ceilings with exposed beams throughout, dozens of ceiling fans turning in tandem, lighted grape vines encircling the lively restaurant, and friendly staff made the place welcoming and well-planned. I ordered the half Rueben and soup of the day which was a Seafood Crowder. While we sipped on various Muscadine wines, we enjoyed the atmosphere and had an informative discussion with our server. Our food arrived and we dug in. My Rueben was outstanding. The rye bread wasn't too overpowering and was coupled with a generous mound of corned beef. The soup was amazing! I savored the meaty chunks of fish and scallops in a perfectly creamy base. What an amazing spot for lunch. Don't miss it. read more

This place is pretty good. It is the bistro right next to the wine shop that does tastings. If you are military and do the tasting first, they give you the same treatment they do their members for their wine club. If you pay for the 10 course taster, you get a free glass of wine after with either a lunch at the bistro or at the bar at the wine shop. I don't know the fee for being a member, but they also give a military discount at the bistro as well. I brought my mom and wife here, since I just returned from overseas I wanted to see family and take my mom and wife out to an activity they enjoyed - wine tasting worked perfectly. We had lunch here since it was right next door and the special was southern fried pork chops. These were awesome. We kicked it off with an appetizer of fried green tomatoes and my wife and mom had never had them. The tomatoes were fruity in the middle with a crispy outside. My mom and wife both found themselves really liking them. It came out with six slices which was perfect for the three of us. Both my mom and wife ended up taking 1 pork chop home each since the lunch special came with two. I finished both pork chops but I was absolutely stuffed. The pork was very juicy, the breading was crispy and it was served with fresh green beans that were definitely not from a can, and rice with gravy with a fresh roll. Well, can't say it was a good experience. We sat down and immediately a young lady brought us food before we even ordered. We explain that was not our order. Waitress took about 15 mins before taking our drink order. Another 15 minutes before taking our food order. Offered others in the restaurant if they wanted to taste their signature wine for the day, never asked our table. ... Food finally came order wrong !!! We ordered soup and salad... only gave us soup. No salad. . Missed next wine tasting since same waitress never came to take our credit card to pay. Hopefully next time we come we'll get better service. Soup was good. read more

I really hate to write such a negative review, because the people at this place are very nice and I really don't want to give the impression that the wait staff is anything other than helpful, pleasant, and a true joy to be around. Additionally, Duplin has some fantastic wines that are worth your time and money investment. The problem is simple: the food. Our party of three ordered 3 different items: My wife had the only positive reaction in the group to her chicken salad sandwich and pasta salad side. She was the only one who didn't end up sick. My friend ordered the Rueben with a the broccoli soup. His initial report on the Rueben was that it didn't taste right. He finished the soup. An hour later, he was populating the bathroom on a regular basis. I ordered a salad (no dressing) with grilled chicken. The chicken came out tender and warm (if unseasoned). The problem was that the rest of the salad was also warm. Since it didn't have dressing, instead of sending it back like I should have, I foolishly finished my salad. I also ended up sick to my stomach. Sadly, because of these infections and this experience, I cannot recommend the restaurant at all. read more

The meal was excellent and reasonable for a winery bistro (we have been to many). I had the Chicken Cordon Bleu sandwich which was excellent. My father in law had the crab cakes which were good. the wife had the Asian chicken salad which she enjoyed but was unable to finish is there was so much. The menu did not have a huge selection but still had plenty enough to choose from. I prefer lunch there because it's more casual; dinner is a little more upscale (not shorts and t-shirt). We make a special stop here every time we go to the beach, just to do the wine tasting and have lunch at the bistro. EVERYTHING here is good. We've eaten the muscadine dip, the cheese plate, the philly cheese steak, the burgers, the chicken ranch wrap, the club...so many entrees. For a small place they have a really great variety of food. The food is very affordable, and the portion sizes are great. The wine slushies that they serve are to die for. The only thing I might say, the kitchen is a little slow, though that does let you know they make things to order. If you are visiting the winery, or not--you have to stop in! read more
