From the street it looked like a charming New England B&B and there are plenty of those in the area. What sets this particular one apart, in my opinion, are the following: * At the back of this charming home is a beautifully crafted, lush garden with a hammock and benches placed in strategic nooks designed for optimal book-reading or daydreaming. At the top of the small hill is a pergola -- for more daydreaming, or if you are a bride-to-be looking for a romantic venue, this tops the cake. * The added bonus: you get your own entrance to a walking trail (please see picture below) that connects to a network of trails. It's beautiful now in the the summer time. I imagined how much more beautiful it will be in autumn. I must come back. * The breakfasts are to die for!! Imaginative and definitely gourmet. BTW, I had stayed in some expensive hotels before (the Four Seasons, etc.) -- in my opinion, this B&B's breakfast is better. Way, way better. On my first day, the second course was freshly-baked frittata with a side of steamed kale and zucchini -- picked from their garden. The cheese had just the right gooey to it, and the eggs were fluffy. Day 2: French-toasted croissant filled with creamy custard and drizzled with maple-orange syrup. Yum! * The Owner, Lynn is a wonderful person who had lived in Brattleboro for a very long time and knows its ins and outs -- from where to get great cheese to Brattleboro's unique home architectures. Engaging when a guest needed help and wonderfully welcoming. Yet, I always felt I had my privacy. She has mastered how to be a great host. BTW, the rooms are clean and well kept with a touch of history and modern amenities -- for example: I had a double shower head (a rain shower and a handheld). One last thing: In a hotel or an Airbnb, I always felt unsafe -- locked and double locked. In contrast, in the three days that I stayed here, I left my windows open at night to feel the cool evening breezes from the garden, and during the day, I left my door unlocked while I ate breakfast at the dining room. Priceless. I would come back for the breakfast, or the garden and walking trails, or the wonderfully warm, welcoming atmosphere -- better still, get all three. This one is definitely worth going back to again and again whenever I find myself looking for a great place to stay in Vermont. Highly recommended!

We were in awe of the home, the decor, the homemade desserts, the little touches that made our trip very special. The suite was extremely clean and stocked with lovely linens, fresh fruit, coffee, and even fresh autumn leaves for a beautiful decorative flair. They were kind enough to pick us up from the Amtrak station and really attended to our every need. The building is easy to find, plenty of parking, and somewhat accessible. The parking lot is unpaved so not smooth in spots and can be messy in the rain/snow. There are steps and a short ramp into the building (looks a bit steep to me) and if you are staying overnight there is no elevator - the rooms are up one flight of stairs so be prepared. Jordan checked us in and we were all set in a couple minutes. There is a snack station in the hallway upstairs - Keurig, bottled water, chips, cookies - available all the time. Hair dryers and an ironing board are also in the hallway if you need them. The Suzie room is spacious with a fireplace and wall heating unit - both have remotes - and was very cozy. There are 4 windows (corner room) with magnetic (?) blinds but no drapes. The blinds work well but do not block out enough light at night - drapes would help - so the room does not get dark at night due to the streetlights. The bathroom has a surround with a shower that works well and gets nice & hot, and a toilet. The sink is outside the bathroom and is a very pretty ceramic bowl. I also loved the smooth, wide, wooden plank floors. We could hear footsteps & muffled voices from downstairs during business hours but it was quiet at night. The building is old and has been lovingly renovated. It's has a cozy, country charm with antiques and knickknacks throughout. We had dinner with family in the restaurant the night we arrived. Good menu selection and the food was great. Margaret (the owner) made us breakfast in the morning (available from 7-9am) and that was lovely! If you need something just ask - she was able to get us another box of tissues (we don't need much lol). We heard that the building might be haunted - ghost hunters (the TV show) has visited. We stayed for 3 nights and I did not hear, see, feel or otherwise sense any spirits in our room. Maybe in the other rooms? We would definitely stay here again in the future!

They actually left in the middle of the night due to the poor conditions and when they asked for a refund for the extra night, the hotel refused to refund them even after they complained about the rooms condition. The reason I am writing the review is because the hotel actually BLOCKED them from writing a review and when we called to complain the staff hung up on us! Save yourself a trip and go elsewhere. (it takes your skis and snowboards too) -Continental breakfast--again nothing fancy, but very convenient if you want to quickly fuel up for the day before hitting the slopes. (oatmeal, cold cereal, fruit, coffee/tea/hot chocolate, bagels, waffles, doughnuts, opastries, juice etc.) We did have some trouble with small leaks in the bathroom, but communication with the staff quickly saw them fixed. As other reviews have noted, this place is older and In need of some updates, but again, the friendly staff negates any problem you may run into. We've heard great things about the bi-weekly Indian dinner offered at this place and look forward to coming back again to enjoy it. Perhaps next year for fall foliage? There are some original parts that date to its origin as a pub and inn from the late 1700s. Some quirks in the facility are due to various retrofittings and building updates. A great jumping off spot for driving around the local area. And the Inn itself was fantastic too, starting with Jeff who was very helpful and welcoming. Robin took our reservation over the phone and she also was very friendly. The breakfasts were very good and it was great to hang out behind the Inn where there is a large pond. We did do a trip up to Woodstock and truthfully we were very happy that we were staying at the Whetstone Inn rather than someplace in Woodstock. Way more relaxing I think. It was our first visit to New England and it might be a while before we get back but when we do, we'll be staying at the Whetstone Inn. Go, you'll love it.

Where should I begin?…read more Let's start from the beginning. This is one of two motels in Orange, MA with the closest hotel being 30 minutes away. That makes one's choices limited. As I went to check-in, the Manager (probably the owner) spent 5 minutes repeatedly pointing out that I had not indicated if I wanted a smoking or non-smoking room. I'm pretty sure the Priceline form didn't ask me this or I would have chosen non-smoking. Finally, I asked if there were no non-smoking rooms available to which he replied that there were. Then why the hell does it matter if I indicated this or not? It is completely irrelevant considering that there were like 4 guests checked in. He just wanted to make a pointless point by pointing out that I didn't select a smoking preference. It was crazy. Then, I went into my room and saw that there was no refrigerator. The only reason I chose this motel is because it stated that there was a refrigerator in every room. I went back to the front desk and asked if he could put a refrigerator in there and he told me to use the one in the lobby. I stated that I called and was told there were refrigerators in each room and that I needed one. He looked up another room, pulled the keys and threw them at me and told me I could move into the other room. So now he was hostile. I moved into the room two doors down and as I did, the Manager came out to watch me. Then, he instructed me to move my car down two spaces so that others could park in front of their rooms. Did I really need to move my car when only 4 people were checked in? He was crazy. The new room had hair all over the shower, which I just cleaned up on my own. It smelled like smoke and mustiness. There was a spider on the inside of the door. The towels were super cheap and hard. The toiletries looked like they were from a gas station bathroom. And there wasn't sufficient light in the room. When I went into the hallway the next morning, it smelled strongly of smoke. It was disgusting. Then, when my towels were replaced, there was a cluster of black hairs left on top of them. It was disgusting as well. I should mention that he took the full payment for all 4 nights up front. After two nights, I was involved in an accident and was admitted to the hospital. My friends checked me out and inquired as to how I could receive a refund and he told them to contact the booking company. When Priceline's partner Booking.com contacted them, they lied and said that I had not checked out early. What a sick f***. I end up in the hospital and he lies to keep my money. I finally resorted to going to my credit card company who issued a refund to me regardless of what he said. The manager is the biggest selfish a**hole I have ever met and I would rather sleep in my car than stay at this motel again. A better option is the Travel Inn.
