This is a super cute place to stay! The owners are delightful - very polite and accommodating. Rose bushes suggest individualized TLC (it's hard to keep them healthy - they clearly take pride in plants and property) It looks a bit sketchy when you first pull in - the doors to the room are on the opposite side of the first parking lot you see. Small playground for wee ones. Wi-fi; flat screen TV, mini fridge, coffee maker, hair dryer in room. no other amenities (pool, fitness, etc). Right off the highway and Pet friendly. This was our first and last time staying here. We had to drive to a grocery store to buy cleaning products to clean the room. If I had extra money, I would have bought a vacuum cleaner too. Place hadn't been dusted or vacuumed in I don't know how long. We dusted, walls, light fixtures, lamp shades, etc. I went to open the curtains and was greeted by a family of spiders and spider webs on every window (there are only 3). Thankfully the bedding was clean. My in-laws have been going to VT every memorial day weekend for 40 years in celebration of their anniversary. This is the first year that my mother-in-law isn't with us and my father-in-law wanted to go, so we went with him. He made the arrangements and we just trusted that it would be good. We reserved a room months before for 3 people. We paid for insurance on the room to make sure everything worked out as planned. When we got there they assigned us a room for 3. We got to the room and there was only one bed. Wow!! I go back to the office and they tell me that is the only room available. Take or leave it. I was told it was my problem. He understood the reservation was for 3 people. When I make a reservation anywhere for 3 people, one bed is not what I would expect. It was foliage season and nothing else was available. I stayed here on President's Day weekend for less than $70 a night. I was looking for a cheap place to rest and break up my drive to Okemo Mountain, which is about 40 minutes from here. After pulling into a deserted parking lot and checking in, I breathed a sigh of relief when I pulled to the back of the building and discovered all of the cars! I entered my room and was pleasantly surprised. Spacious with character! A wooden slopes ceiling made it feel like Vermont. A big slider covered with drapes, it was bright in the morning once I opened them! The view of the parking lot was disappointing, but not a big deal. The bed was comfortably, the shower was okay ... Hot, slight lack in water pressure - but again, it for the job done. The place stayed nice and warm, and there is a small entry way before the bed area so you can keep your ski boots and stuff. On top of that, a tiny offering if to go items for breakfast when you check out. Location is great. Seconds from exit 4 off of 91, 10 minutes from Brattleboro and 40 from Okemo. Again, less than $70/ night on a holiday and scho vacation weekend. Closer to Okemo, prices were 2-10x that! And the room was good. I'd definitely stay again. read more

This review is solely for the lodging part of the Inn.... which was definitely *NOT* to my wife's liking. Before making the reservation, I consulted Yelp for reviews and took note of the Inn's many five star ratings for the restaurant part of the business. However, what was *not* clear to me was that the Putney Inn's lodging is a motel-like structure that is adjacent to the highly rated restaurant. According to Wikipedia, an Inn is "generally (an) establishment or building where travelers can seek lodging and, usually, food and drink." Yes, the Putney Inn provides all that... to a point. My wife's main complaint about our room was that it was musty and dated. The bathroom was also a bit moldy, probably due to inadequate ventilation. After our first night there, we discussed our options the next day over breakfast in the Inn. My wife's disposition at that point had soured to the point of no return... so we cancelled our stay there, packed up our belongings, and ventured down the road to Brattleboro & spent the remainder of parents weekend in a comfy hotel. read more

Last minute reservation. Chose this place based on all the rave reviews. I don't think they were very recent. We were out off by the lack of cars in the lot, the screens leaning up against the building, the lack of outside lighting, the wires hanging from the porch roof, and the bathroom windows with no coverings. Weird. But it was late, so were going to just deal. When the bedbug crawled over the pillow, that was it! They offered to move us to another room. No thanks! They did apologize and refunded the charge. They've got some work to do. read more

This is a lovely place to stay. It was quiet, comfortable, and the rooms were large and clean. We had 2 beds, a kitchen table/desk with 2 chairs. A mini fridge, microwave, coffee maker, large flatscreen TV, WiFi, and 3 drawers for clothes. We were traveling with our dogs and there was a nominal $20 per pet fee which is pretty standard. It's seconds from the highway with plenty of parking. We had 2 vehicles one of which was a truck and big trailer. The restaurant on property is closed but we found plenty of food options close by as it's very close to Brattleboro. We ordered calzones and lasagna from DoorDash which was super convenient and the food was very good. The owners of the Inn are on site and very nice. Huge grassy area for pet relief but no fenced in area. Coffee is also available in the lobby as well as a self serve waffle maker, toast and bagels. We stayed here while attending a family wedding in the area. The owner, Mr. Patel, was friendly and fairly accommodating. The signage indicates that there is a restaurant and bar on site, but they are currently closed. A basic breakfast is included with your stay. The rooms have been recently renovated; however, a few negatives: the water pressure in the shower was more like a trickle, the bathroom did not have a vent fan (although it did have a window) and the lighting in the room was not sufficient. We spent a frantic morning searching for our car keys because it was too dim inside the room to locate them. Our room was clean; however, a few rooms in our party did not get cleaned each day. In addition, the wifi was spotty. Considering there are not a lot of other options for lodging in the area, the Putney Inn is not a bad choice. read more

What an awesome experience! Totally redone and "new" rooms at very reasonable prices. All the standard amenities with a good size fridge and microwave. Very customer service oriented, the owner stopped by when we were unloading and checked if everything was alright. 2 very small items would have made my review a 5 instead of a 4, there is no drawfan in he bathroom and the windows in the bathroom have no curtains on them (they are small and high). One other item is there is no mat in the shower so it's very slippery, my wife and I went and bought a shower mat as we were afraid of slipping. For the restaurant only: Went here for a business dinner and I had a fairly good meal. However - the menu had a few choices for apps, entrees and desserts - none of which were gluten free, or vegan - only one appetizer out of the whole menu was vegetarian. I'm happy to be an omnivore, but observed a neighboring vegan diner asking our waitstaff for the salad appetizer to be served as an entree, as none of the entrees were meat-free. This vegan request was handled with good grace (waitstaff were nice), but the poor girl brought back a giant salad festooned with goat cheese even though she'd heard the diner order a vegan salad. So that was pretty sad - diner ate around it with good grace also, but seemed really weird to have such a disconnected idea of food and diet in an eating establishment. Waste of good goat cheese and a hungry diner after dinner! The menu being so omnivorous was odd in & of itself: in the group were at least 2 vegans, 3 vegetarians and a few gluten-free folks. Tricky, I guess - but the nature of our business/industry would have (I think!) suggested such dietary limitations/preferences to anyone thinking remotely critically. That aside, so many people from all over life have dietary restrictions - anyone putting menus together should really get a handle on that concept and deploy accordingly - any restaurant that doesn't anticipate dietary restrictions is, in my opinion, a restaurant that needs some help! read more

First of all, we had our wedding reception here 20 years ago and it was lovely. So we were excited to return to VT recently and stay for a couple nights. It was very disappointing to say the least. The rooms are not clean. We took photos of all the dirty surfaces where we legibly wrote "dust me" with our finger to show the manager. The worst part, however, was waiting 40 minutes in a slow dining room for breakfast. And when it arrived the pancakes were not cooked. And I don't mean a little undercooked--Inedible. The last three times I went to this place I came away disappointed. At first, I thought that maybe the cook was just having a bad hair day or something. The second we got there rather late and I again gave them the benefit of the doubt, feeling like they weren't going to cook up everything fresh so late. The last time it was right in the middle of the dinner hour and the taste of the meal and quality of the food was worse than the other two times. I mentioned this to a coworker and he said that he'd run into the same thing: dried out, near tasteless meals that looked like something you'd get (for about 60% less!) at one of the local diners. He said that he and his family had been going there for more than 20 years, but he never went back because when he sent an email to the manager that outlined his displeasure, they never contacted him. My recommendation is that if you really think you have to go to this place, sit outside for awhile and see if you can't strike up a conversation with some of the guests who are leaving and be guided by what they say. As we tried to escape Vermont on New Year's Day, a massive snowstorm impeded our departure. So strong was this storm that we decided it would be best for us to pull off the interstate and find a place to bunk down while the fury of the storm had some time to peter out. And this brought us to the Putney Inn. I'd say it's a solid three star place. The rooms are clean, if a bit old looking. The price was right at $100/room. The TV was small and the shower had no discernible head, but packed a wallop when it came to water pressure. As to the food, something the Putney Inn literature told us it was renowned for, the kitchen was serving a limited dinner of four soups (it was New Year's Day after all) that seemed tasty. The free breakfast we had was great: eggs, sausage, flapjacks, home-fries, and pumpkin bread. On an historic note: Putney was the first home of John Humphrey Noyes before he moved his idea of an "utopian society" with "complex marriage" on to Oneida where Charles Guiteau tried to hang out. read more

The Inn was nice, clean, and well kept. It was recently reopened with a new owner. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. The building is pet friendly and there is a nice area in the back to walk your pooch. There was coffee, juice, and other cold items served for breakfast. The Putney Inn is not terrible, but their sales rhetoric far oversells the charms of the actual establishment. It's a fair-to-middlin' highway motel with slightly better than average food. The website claims that the rooms are furnished with "a tone of cultured Vermont charm." In reality, they smell moldy, the decor is more "outdated" than "antique" (heavy on the dusty rose wallpaper), and the mattresses look (and feel) about twenty years old. The food is more impressive, but it doesn't live up to its billing. The country breakfast (included with overnight stay) is delicious, but dinner is overpriced and underwhelming. Additionally, they never seemed to have enough waitstaff working when I was there, so service was incredibly slow. Not a bad choice if you need a jumping off point for the area, but don't expect wonders. And don't expect a lot of courtesy from the "inkeeperess." read more

The Putney Inn is under new ownership since last I stayed here maybe 7 years ago. If you had been here in the past, a few things to note: the original bar and restaurant building are completely closed though some work appears to be happening there so perhaps it will eventually re-open. The guest rooms were always in a separate 2 story motel-like building behind the Inn. However, these have been renovated top to bottom. They are unrecognizable as the rooms I stayed in 7 years ago and could easily pass themselves off as rooms at a recently updated Holiday Inn or Courtyard. The bathrooms are all updated, as are all the furnishings, floor coverings, beds and bedding. The exterior of the building has also been updated. Each room has a mini fridge and microwave and large flat screen. I would swear the big glass sliding doors are also a new addition but my memory fades...I suppose they could have been here before. But they provide nice light. The owners have built a small new building that includes the reception area and free breakfast service, which is a basic breakfast similar to a Holiday Inn, etc. The owner is very nice. We were so pleased that our dog was welcome. If you bring a pet you have to stay on the ground floor but that was OK for us. Easier exit for doggie bathroom breaks. I have stayed at the full gamut of hotels from dives to luxury...this place is no dive. It's very affordable so I had expected it to be more like the run down motel of 7 years ago but it's definitely not! It's also super close to the Putney Co-op--added bonus and it's right off the highway. I do hope they are eventually able to re-open the original Inn building as it would be nice to have a restaurant/bar so nearby -- and it was a quaint old place--but that is the only 'improvement' I can think of. And fwiw, I could not hear things through the wall. The occasional sound of a door or what not but the walls are far from paper thin. read more

There is no insulation between the walls & you can hear everything in surrounding rooms. First night a dog barked for a few hours & we could hear the man in the next room open & proceed to eat a can of Pringles at 11 pm. Second night , from 10 pm until 5:30 am a new couple in room 205 fought the entire time. We were privy to details about his affair & her being sick and tired of it. The Putney Inn is my family's go-to place for hosting various parties and going out for 'fancy' (by Vermont standards) dinners. My dad's 50th birthday was hosted here, my Bat Mitzvah reception was here, and my family has spent many a dollar on Thanksgivings through-out the years (our motto: give thanks by spending money you are lucky to have). :-) The food: it's down-home, country cooking at its finest. My favorite meal here is the traditional thanksgiving plate - turkey breast, mashed potatos, green beans with mushroom gravy...I want it right now! The main inn: it has low beamed ceilings and is very spacious. The bar is in a separate room that keeps out unwanted noise and offers tables for patrons seeking a more low-key vibe. If you spend the night, there is a beatiful sunroom off the main dining room where you can have your breakfast and find yourself drenched in sunlight. Rooms: Being from about 5 miles away, I have only stayed here once and that was due to drinking heavily (celebratin' with the Pops on his 50th - so we all decided driving was no-go). We had a double room (as a number of my friends trekked up from Boston as well). In all honesty, it's kind of a little like being at the Holiday Inn. They are old, well-worn, but extremely clean and tidy. It's a beautiful old inn set right off I-91 Exit 4 - (at the end of the exit, you can't miss it)! No harm done but the dog owner obviously complained to the Inn keeper. We were convicted without a trial and denied further service. The three of us had a great time at the Putney Inn, my husband and I, and our dog. The pet-friendly rooms were clean and comfortable, the housekeepers gave our dog a "snack pack", anything we asked for was done with a smile in a reasonable time. The pet-friendly rooms are in the back of the inn, by a large field where the dogs can run. The best part for the dog was to join us for breakfast and dinner on the porch. The dog was served a large bowl of water and she settled down on my feet under the table, where I was able to feed her little bits of the worlds-best pumpkin bread. They served fresh local produce, cheeses, and meats. The ice-cream was old-fashioned home style, also locally made; the flour-less chocolate cake was divine. Every meal we had there (5) was excellent! The complimentary breakfast was not just a bland bagel and coffee. The Putney Inn will give you silver-dollar pancakes, fruit, eggs, cereal, juice, bacon, sausage.... and a bottomless cup of coffee. A real Vermont bargain. read more

I always find it amusing when a business can't handle honest reviews and deletes them. This is a tell tale sign that said business has something to hide. It's just too bad that people can't handle honesty and want to censor public reviews. So here is my review that has been deleted several times by the Putney Inn management. We stopped here after a gas station attendant suggested we stopped here off of the highway for some "eats" It was easy parking because the place resembled a small dated ghost town of a typical off the highway semi creepy motel with a separate building at the entrance of the parking lot which houses the restaurant. The service was poor and unfriendly from the greeting at the entrance to our waitress. Our wait time for our food seemed like a long time even though there weren't many other guests besides us and the wait wasn't worth it like we were hoping. The food was barely edible, My wife and I over heard some loud unsavory talking through the kitchen doors and opted for our check which also was a task obtaining in itself. I was not impressed and wouldn't have enjoyed eating here children present or not. This was over priced food that none of us wanted to eat. I wouldn't suggest this place for anyone. If the motel is anything like the restaurant I would be staying away from this place, it is dirty and extremely dated unless bad food and bad service from strange people is your thing the putney inn gets 1 star None of us really did much but poke at our food so we pulled off for wendy's for the kids before we got back on the road. Review of restaurant only: Under new management in past year or so. Quite lovely people, very lovely dining room, but mediocre food and subpar service. The ingredients are often yummy, local, and ethical, but somehow they are cooked to a crummy diner level. Been there 3x in past 2 months with a large group, about 8-10 people, and it is never remotely busy, but the server (same woman) is consistently overwhelmed, under-attentive, distracted, and insecure. I was a waitress years ago, and not a great one, but I knew that when I was overwhelmed my bare minimum was to keep waters and coffees full, and bread on the table. I also took good care to remove plates (or get busser to) when the customer was finished. At the Putney Inn my party consistently has to beg for service, remind the server what order goes where, sit with piles of dirty dishes, and then deal with a defensive, insecure server who delivers lukewarm food that costs a few more dollars than it should. Today when we showed up, there was a family who appeared to have been sitting there a long while, who meekly asked the server if they could order. She responded awkwardly and too-loudly as she was racing through the dining room for no apparent reason, "oh, you haven't ordered yet?!" Then after taking about 10 minutes to get our coffee/tea orders straightened out, we had to ask for menus. There were some people at the table who hadn't even received water until after the food was served, and they had to ask for it twice. I'm not a snob, trust me, and I have very little money, so when I go out for a nice brunch with friends, I'm very grateful for good food and good service, and I think it's reasonable to expect that. I go there to be with my friends, but I'm consistently underwhelmed and frustrated. For a weekend getaway, my husband & I decided to grab a living social deal to Putney, Vermont for some relaxing, R&R, and a visit to the Green Orchard Mountains for apple/blueberries picking and their famous cider donuts and pies. Putney Inn is known for their breakfast and dinner menu in addition to their warm & friendly hospitality. I noticed a few yelpers point out a moldy or damp smell in the rooms/bath tub/linens. And, it is true, it is definitely apparent. I wasn't too crazy about the shower but I don't think this is due to a lack of cleanliness or hygiene reasons. House keeping is pretty thorough and starts promptly in the morning when guests wake up to start out their day. Most inns & b&b places carry that smell due to the damp grounds particularly Vermont where farms are built around fertile soil and lands. It would help if they were able to air out the rooms or freshen it up a bit with either air freshener/potpourri. Dinner was pretty good. We was told their chef is phenomenal and been with them for a year. Hub had their pan seared scallops with vanilla roasted fingerling potatoes, baby spinach, and buerre blanc. Scallops were juicy and cooked well. I had their turkey pot pie that was much raved about on living social. It was a bit disappointing for me due to overall starch and thickness. It would worked better for a Shepherd pie. Chunks of turkey mixed in with potatoes, peas, and carrots in a thick gravy sauce which was similar to a Campbell's soup can. Maybe I should have went with a different option like their Roasted Lemon Thyme Chicken or Wild Salmon. I had a glass of their cider that compliment the meal. And for dessert, we shared a coconut crème brûlée with our coffees. The waitress recommended their signature maple moose but warned of its sweetness so we went with the crème brûlée. And for breakfast, we both had their Vermonter which included two eggs any style, two buttermilk pancakes, home fries, Vermont maple sausage or Applewood bacon. The waitress also brought out a dish of pumpkin bread with whipped butter and our coffees/orange juice for us. Now I see what the rave is all about for their pumpkin bread and pancakes. It def made me smile to wake up to such a filling and hearty breakfast away from the city! Overall, our stay was pleasant. Our room had a personalized letter greeted with a plate of cookies. The owner even greeted us in the morning with a warm welcome since we were their first living social customers. :) And the staff couldn't have been more helpful from pointing us with the right directions to guidance with tours and around town. Our deal included a voucher for a one night stay with a $25 dining credit and full breakfast. Free WiFi. And most sites are around the inn or 10 mins away. We have enjoyed the food every time we have been here. However, the management and service is not sophisticated in any sense of the word. BE WARNED: If you view attention to detail as critical to the success of hosting your friends and love ones, PROCEED WITH CAUTION (and, hopefully, a contract that spells out what you will get for a couple grand). We hosted our 20th anniversary party here, for 23 guests. Eighteen came from Boston, New York, and California, where courtesy and attention to detail are fundamentals of good business practice . The managment at Putney Inn seemed not only surprised, but were obviously annoyed that we actually wanted to participate in choosing the wines and Hors d'œuvre to be served at our own party. They were pretty unresponsive to our calls and concerns - even only one week before the event, despite that we had not heard from them at all. This was new to us, as most caterers and establishments we've dealt with in the past actively seek customer preferences and to build a relationship with them to assure that they will be pleased with the end result and bring return business. For dinner we had an open bar and blinded house menu ($$$$). We requested (and provided) specific music to be played in the privae dining room, where music is piped in. They forgot to play the music and I had to go tell them and identify the music we had brought in half-way through the party. For 23 people seated at 3 tables, managment provided only two servers for dinner. They were nice, but two people can not serve 23 people, let alone with attention and style. The consequence was that those served appetizers first, had finished completely before the last table recieved their appetizer. This was the pattern for salad, dinner, as well as, dessert and coffee. Meanwhile, those served first sat and waited and waited and waited and waited, while the others started their course. Being originally from Gothem City, I was happy with the food, but embarrassed by the service and lack of attention to detail. (I am a discerning, but not tough, customer). The owner was on site, but never came to greet us or say "thanks for dropping thousands of bucks here tonight." The next morning, all of our guests who stayed at the inn also joined us for a delicious breakfast. The owner again was in the inn, but never said hello or, even, go to hell. As I walked to the restroom, I smiled and said good morning, to which she replied, "You're Adams, right?" Hmmm....again I was reminded, "I have a feeling we're not in Kansas any more." Then again, maybe we were? We never recieved any follow up to see how the party went or if they might improve anything. The food was excellent. And that is what my 3-star rating is for. This comment is based on the restaurant only. We'd like to rate it higher because the atmosphere is rather cozy and welcoming and the staff friendly, but there were a few issues. We arrived on a slow day for lunch and were seated on the porch; our waitress was quite peasant but something less than attentive; our water glasses never got re-filled, for instance. The tomato cheddar soup was tasty but a bit on the thin side, and the grilled three-cheese sandwich was served lukewarm on multi-grain bread (we were offered no choices for the bread). The fish-and-chips turned out yummy for the fish (not too greasy fried), but the fries with it were droopy and lukewarm. Best of all was the mac and cheese, apparently a restaurant specialty. Prices seemed on the high side to us -- $10.95 for a cup (not bowl) of soup and a small half-sandwich, for instance. But in general, the food wasn't up to the quality we had hoped. Perhaps our one visit was not typical, but it wasn't one that made us eager to contemplate future visits. read more

The food is spectacular! The best way to describe it would be gormet American. Steaks, fish, lamb and much more all done in a way that makes me wish I had a larger stomach. They also have some less expensive, but equally delicious, items like burgers, meatloaf and possibly the worlds best turkey dinner. Save room for dessert, their maple moose is to die for. I will never come to vermont without stopping at the Putney Inn. I have been there no less than 10 times and have never been anything less than amazed with my meal. They use ingredients from tons of local farms (all listed on the menu). The inn has been in the same family for nearly forty years and the amount they care really shows. As for the rooms I've never stayed there so I cant say. But if its anything like the experience in the restaurant I'm sure they're great. I love this place! read more

I've never stayed at the Putney Inn, but my husband and I had a wonderfully romantic dinner there one night. The dining room is spacious with nice views, and it's quiet. The Putney Inn really does support all kinds of local agriculture, and it shows in the quality of their food! I had a great big roast turkey plate with mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce, and it was just as good as Thanksgiving at my mother's. My dining partner was also quite pleased with his meal. They also tell you on the inside cover of the menu which farms they support (which I very much enjoy knowing). One caveat: The building, unfortunately, is a mere softball pitch from I-91. Even though it has a beautiful big porch, I can't imagine that sitting on it in nice weather is pleasant because of the massive highway noise. So if you're excited by the photos on their website of the big Colonial porch, don't be disappointed if you discover that you have to yell in order to carry on a conversation. read more

The Putney Inn is a wonderful place to go for celebrating pretty much anything. Their prices, while a little high, are absolutely justified in the quality of food and service you get while there. We had our wedding reception at the Inn in 10/06 and owner Randi Ziter is a most helpful, caring, and creative person. We thoroughly appreciated her willingness to let us customize the menu and really branch out to offer our guests some fun choices. She absolutely bent over backward to help us sculpt out the perfect day. We have been back several (maybe 4 or 5) times since and the quality of food and service we received has never wavered away from a solid 5 stars. As a side note, Randi still remembers us and always goes out of her way to say hello if we happen to be there when she is on duty. We have never stayed overnight, so this rating only speaks for the restaurant portion of the business. read more
