I felt more confident within the first 5 minutes learning from him but then he really goes into each position we might be put into and what our options of defense are to get out and attack our attacker! He even pads up and has us practice on him. I am blown away by how little I knew before this class. I would have been useless and I already feel so much stronger and safer after just one 1.5 hr session! Nelson is fabulous. He is the sweetest, most encouraging but straight forward teacher. I could go on and on about how highly I recommend him. You will NOT regret this class (definitely might feel sore after though!!!) I attended my first beginner's class in December 2023 (it's now August 2024 when I'm writing this review), and I was probably in the worst shape of my life when I began. I blame Covid/changing to a WFH job/30's metabolism changes blah blah blah, but whatever. I was happy to keep blaming my excuses. And I was so nervous to take a class and move my body in front of other people... I had literally never taken an exercise class of any kind before. But when I say that first class was the most welcoming, encouraging, fun, and yes-HARD-experience I've ever had... I mean it. It was the perfect balance of everything I needed to get me to come back. I've never enjoyed exercising, it's always been something I dread. But Rashad and Crystal know what they're doing, and they genuinely want to help you feel stronger in your body. I never feel uncomfortable or self-conscious in any way in their classes, only encouraged and motivated. I've now lost 23 pounds (!) in the past 8 months (also with the help of a calorie deficit I started 3 months ago), and I feel actual muscle and strength that I've never felt before in my life, even at my "thinnest." I'm now straight up addicted to these classes. I will only miss one if life requires me to, and I feel genuinely upset when I do! They have been such a game changer for my mental health, too. I thought it was a cute idea for a "Ladies Night Out". I contacted one of the owners (Chris) to find out how I could host a self defense class that would best fit my organization. Chris was very helpful and was able to tailor the class to my specific goals. I decided to host a Mother's & Daughter's Kick Butt self defense class for my organization RISE UP Youth Empowerment, as a bonding activity between mothers and daughters. Although I didn't come in with any particular expectations but the class was very informative, and more importantly it was fun fun fun!!!! All the ladies who attended the class expressed that they were able to learn great moves which also focused on toning their bodies. The Self Defense teachers were great!! they kept us interested with the knowledge they gave us. I felt empowered after attending this class and I would recommend it to all women because you'll learn so much that will possibly save your life, and as a added bonus tone your body.
