One of the best places to eat in St Louis so far! All grass fed and organic and supports the local farmers. (and even when I ordered the Salmon they told me it was fresh from Washington) Starter - the back of the menu had their list of wine and many buy per glass. Yes Please! Second - ask the server to talk about the additional featured items that aren't on the menu! We ordered the app of a bread with pesto riccota spread with shrimp, olives, and roasted peppers (amazing) and I had the salmon served over the pumpkin risotto (a little salty and won't be the same warmed up) but still very delicious! My friends ordered the Pear salad, shrimp and the roasted veggies and she ate it all and loved it, and my other friend ordered the steak and states it was 'probably the best steak he has had before' BONUS! I have been to the CWE location and was a huge fan of my meal there, so I knew I was in for a treat when I got the chance to dine at their Webster location. Although The Block has 2 locations, I like that the menu is different, despite the concept being the same! My meal was once again amazing. I got the pork and dumplings, a rich, hearty and filling meal perfect for a frigid winter evening. For appetizers we got the flatbread special, brussel sprouts and meatballs. All good. Desert included apple crisp, bread pudding and vanilla ice cream made in house. Also fantastic. The atmosphere is relaxed, casual and intimate. The service is spot on, our waitress was so nice, and was very aware of our conversation and did not interrupt! Definitely appreciated. The one downside is a small bar. Since the restaurant does not take reservations, we knew we had to wait, as did others, and it would be nice to have a larger bar area. This was my first time trying the block but not my partners. Where the food is natural and not processed, it is overpriced for what you get. I got the block burger and it was dry. Decided to go last night. I guess it's Valentines weekend so it was busy. We arranged to place ourselves on the wait list through Yelp. Checked in a few times with the hostess. It seems we got bumped twice. One couple recognized friends and they decided to eat together, and we were before them. Heard them talking, but whatever. What I wished they told us while we waited 40 something minutes that they had a limited "special" menu for V-Day. Here we are drilling about Ribeye. But they do have a petite sirloin on the special dining menus. With very limited items, I don't eat fish, i opted for a salad. I did ask if I got the chicken, could I substitute the potatoes with anything else. She said if I did that it could only be that ???? It came with a variety of other veggies. I should have just picked them out. My daughter and husband got the burgers. I got to say it was cooked perfectly rare. Other then that it was ok. Maybe if they told us about the limited menu when we got there we would if left. That definitely put a damper on things. On a high note the Brussel sprouts were really good. Visited for my boyfriends birthday dinner, and we loved The Block! We started with drinks at the bar while we were waiting on our table, and they have pretty amazing happy hours specials for drinks. I got a 16 oz local craft beer for $3, and it was fantastic! They have a full bar offering wine and craft cocktails as well, and offer happy hour deals on some of those too. For food we started with the bacon jam, and this is a must try item! It was so unique and flavorful, and pretty big for the price. For entrees they have a small selection of specialty dishes and sandwiches. I tried the pork and dumplings, and my boyfriend got the ribeye with fries. The pork and dumplings is AMAZING, and I would highly recommend trying this! My boyfriend said his steak was great and super flavorful. For a Butchers shop though, we wished they offered more cuts of steak to choose from. All in all we loved our dinner and will definitely be back again. We waited for about 20 minutes very looking forward to our experience! We finally got to the table and the waitress was very good, polite. We got our appetizer of Brussel sprouts and were blown away. However, our dinner was not at all from the same chef! My burger came out raw after i had said i needed it medium well. They immediately took it and cooked that hamburger with my egg on it. So now my yolk is hard and the burger is still half pink. They were willing to take it again, but nah. I'm done. They didn't charge me which was nice, but sadly I'm not coming back. read more

We came here for the first time to celebrate my dad's 88th birthday. We had a group of 7 including our daughter who uses a wheelchair and they seated us at a table that had some extra space around it to make it comfortable for us. The food was so good! The service from Camille was just right, attentive but not hovering. She was helpful in describing the menu items and it helped us make choices we all enjoyed. Thanks for a great night!!! read more

If you are a meat lover like I am, you really would be hard pressed to find a better farm to table experience for all things beef then you will experience at The Block. It's a butcher shop and restaurant all in one with a focus on grass fed beef. The focus shows too, with dishes that take your normal steak and potatoes to another level. The hanger steak was mouth watering tender and held a cleaner flavor than you normally would experience elsewhere. The sourcing of their beef shows in the flavor as it's a more natural experience and holds a more intense beef flavor. Their burger was out of this world, and truly transcends to another level. While the flavor was again more intense and clean than many lesser burgers, the cook was a perfect medium, which kept the ultimate level of juiciness throughout. The garlic herb fries with truffle aioli were so good they would have outshined a lesser burger, but with the bar set so high with their beef, they are the perfect accompaniment. Food of this quality and the special attention to the details in regard to their beef would make you expect a hefty price point, but while it is by no means a cheap eats qualifier, it also doesn't break the bank. The quality is reminescent of an upscale fine steakhouse, but the price point is more casual steakhouse. If you are a fan of beef, do yourself a favor and make sure you pay The Block a visit. read more

I loved this restaurant! The ambiance was casual but elevated, the service was wonderful, and all four of us scraped our plates clean. What's more, the value was incredible. The prices were fantastic for the quality of food. I had the White Wine Braised Pork and it was so tender and juicy and flavorful. It was one of the best meals I've had at a restaurant in quite some time... Even better than some expensive steak dinners at top-quality steak houses. I hate to write this because I go to the Block often. I hope that this will be constructive feedback. First, I went to Yelp to put our name on the waitlist for the evening and it showed no wait on the website. I literally live 5 minutes from the restaurant and by the time we walked in, the wait had moved to 30 minutes. It really makes customers mad when restaurants are signed up for No Wait and the do not use it! We grabbed a drink and waited and waited. We were seated we ordered another drink which took 10 minutes to get to the table. After that 10 mins we got our order taken. 45 minutes later our steaks arrived. We both ordered medium steaks which arrived charred and rare. We ate them because we were starving by this time and I have never been comfortable sending back food but we should have. From the time we walked through the door, it was almost an hour and 15 minutes until we got something to eat that was burned with a $140 plus bill (dinner and drinks). I am not sure what is going on in the kitchen or with the management of the restaurant but I feel the quality has not been there the last few visits. I love having this restaurant in the community and have been a frequent customer but unfortunately it will be a while before I return. read more

MEAT. MEAT. MEAT! Service was great, seating was quick and menu options varied, but not overwhelming. Started with the Sou-vide ribs, and the flash fried brussels, both of which were aggressively but not crazy over-seasoned. The sliced almonds on top the crispy morsels of brussel sprout flakes were a great texture. The ribs were so darn tender, and had a decent amount of meat on the two my friends had. My rib however was about half the length, so I asked for either another small one or to swap it for a larger one equal size. It makes sense they would decline the request because they said they weigh all the ribs, so they should be equal weight in theory. However, as suspected I came to find my rib was mostly bone and not much meat, which was disappointing since I had a feeling it would be the case and I was told I couldn't get a replacement. Our initial appetizer plates were all dirty, two of which had a notable fleck of leftover food on them, and the third had a thick coating of grease that shimmered in the candlelight. A server noticed us inspecting the dirty plates and without asking brought over three replacements which was good, but the quality control going out should be tighter to prevent this from occurring in the first place considering it wasn't just one plate. There were several points of failure for a plate to make it out and go through several people's hands, still dirty, to our table, and everything adds up. My husband's steak with garlic fries was really tasty, the cook on the steak was perfect. The sauce was rich but didn't overpower the plate, and let the meat really be the star. Ever had french fries where you say "I will just help you with a couple of those" and then can't remember how suddenly all the fries are gone? These thin little tater morsels were salty, crisp, golden and a welcome texture to the protein. So good. My friend's burger was also cooked to perfection and was moist with tons of flavor, she said. Normally I see her eat half her food, and this tall stack of beautiful ground meat seemed to disappear just as quickly as the fries. Our server was friendly, but somewhat distracted by the volume of other tables he was covering- I believe it was just him and one other server for the entire 20 tables or so in our space? I sensed he was rushing through each part of the transaction. Two large groups were in on the evening we dined, so I suspect that contributed to the chaos. Even still, he smiled, gave us just the right amount of time to decide and discuss, and checked on us once. Small things considered the food here is tasty, ample, varied, and fun to try- I will be back for a second try at clean plates, some of those tasty cocktails on the wall, and hopefully a full-sized rib. read more

A group of six went to The Block a little over five years ago and none of us enjoyed our meal. The amount of salt ruined everything. We knew we wouldn't be going back. Over the years, I was told by a number of people how much they liked this place. My husband and I decided to try it again. We thought maybe we had been there on a bad night or perhaps there was a new chef. Four of us went this past Sunday. The Ale and Smoked cheddar was good - a good melted cheese with house made pretzels. I found the House-Made Bacon Jam to be too salty, but the other three liked it. Our server said the pork chop, the pork and dumplings, and the white wine braised pork were the three most popular entrees. I, fortunately, ordered the burger. The burger was nothing special, but it was fine. I couldn't eat the fries due to the amount of salt on them. My fingers were literally covered in salt after picking up a few fries. One person ordered the white wine braised pork and said it was a little too salty and just didn't taste good. She did like the potatoes and carrots that came with the pork. The other two ordered the pork and dumplings. One ate about a quarter of it and the other a little less than half. It was so salty they couldn't eat any more A person, who I believe may have been a manager, came by to see how everything was and we told her. She said most of the spices they use contain salt. She then offered to have different entrees made which we declined - we'd already been there for a little while. They did take one of the orders of pork and dumplings off the bill. Since there wasn't a lot of dinner consumed, we did order some ice cream which was just okay. And the salted caramel was, you guessed it, too salty! I honestly don't know how people can eat the food here. It's truly the saltiest food I've ever had. That much salt can't be good for anybody! We definitely won't be going back. read more

This is a really great spot. I've been here for every occasion; dates, family dinners, groups and girls nights. I have never ordered anything bad. The staff here are fantastic. I love when a server gets excited about the food they have. I've had some great conversations with different servers each time I've dined here. The ambience is dark, rustic with industrial light fixtures. It's a hip spot with friends, yet intimate and romantic for a date. I've had an amazing burger here. I've tried a few of the specials, including an awesome lobster mac n cheese. Most recently I had the pork and dumplings. It was excellent. Melt in your mouth. They always have fresh seasonal salads. I have been here twice now, both times for dinner. Both times the service has been pretty mediocre. It is also way too loud, especially in the back where it is a wall of booth seating. You are basically sitting on top of the other people. Too many kids, and they were not well behaved. I know that is not in the restaurants control but i prefer less children if i am going to be dining at a nicer place. The first time they brought me the wrong drink but did rectify it. Food is good but overpriced. I say that understanding that you pay for the experience and overhead as well as the cost of food. I just don't see the value in this place. Last night i was upcharged a $1 for a tomato on a burger. I found that so odd. The meat on the burger was good but not very flavorful. I am used to a lot more spice when i make my own. I wish this place well but i doubt i will be back. read more

I've been here twice now and it keeps calling my name to come back for more. I can just hear a pig and a cow in the back whispering, "Bernie come back." The smell outside wafting from this restaurant is enough to make you stop in and want to dive in. The number #1 attribute of this place, the specials. Every night something different, and every night 4 or 5 different specials, a daily meat cut, daily flatbread, daily soup, and some kind of daily fish. Diverse menu is an understatement and while they are known for their meats, both their fish and poultry dishes are also fantastic. Must have dish - The potted pig, appetizer with pulled pork confeit served cold amongst some pickles, apple raisin chutney, and some pickled radishes and onions. Even if it sounds scary, just order it. It's amazing. The service was great very knowledgeable wait staff, timely and friendly, but between the menu and the drinks you forget about everything else. The best part about this place, the value. With a cocktail, a soup, and an entree you can get out of here with a 5 star meal for $40 after tip. The beer menu is medium sized and their wine is list is good, but their cocktail menu is creative and original. from the pulled pork, to the rib eye steak this place is delicious up and down. For my Two Hundredth review I give "The Block". Cute name cute inside cute little meat case with cute little chunks of meat. The service was not so cute. The server wished she was anywhere but here waiting on us. I feel your pain it is hard to work for a living. But if you are not a people person than maybe you need to sit in a cube somewhere and not waiting on people with your lousy attitude and pathetically slow to non existent service. What saves this place from something less than 3 stars is the food was very good. I had their steak sandwich.. It was very good. Odd instead of one slice of steak it was pieces of steak placed on the bread. I almost felt it was leftovers from the butcher shop. But style or not the steak was very good. It had a nice punch to it from the pepper they seasoned it with and the gardinaire it was served with. The steak sandwich came with fries so I asked for some ketchup. It came out in one of those little stainless steel cups that was about 25% full. So after about 2 fries I needed more. Good luck with that. Refer to server section of the review. The Block is easily one of the best restaurants and bars to visit in Webster. It doesn't have a particularly big bar area, but they have great cocktails and a great local beer selection which is hard to find in the area of town. They make a mean Manhattan if you were wondering. Not to mention, they have great food, staff, and a laid back atmosphere. For my meal, I went with their burger which was a great idea. Their menu is meat heavy and leans on fancy so I went with something simple. I'd totally get it again but if looks like they have some other staple pieces. This place can get pretty crowed on the weekends so consider a reservation if you're in a hurry. The office had a celebratory lunch and were the first patrons in the door. We got our pick of tables, got lunch menus, beverages, then asked for the dinner menu. There is a bar here. It has six stools, and it's smack-dab in the traffic way for diners coming in or waiting for a table. Probably not the best design. Josh was our server, and he gave us the low-down on sustainability, butchering your own meat, local farm to table and all. Our plan was to sample and share some sides/apps, then have entrees. We shared: Crab & Risotto Cakes ($11) -- Lump crab, sweet corn, creamy vegetable slaw and grain mustard mayo Baked Macaroni & Cheese ($5 for the small) -- served in a cute little lidded cast iron casserole dish Shrimp & Chips ($11) -- Crispy shrimp with shoestring potatoes and remoulade Entrees were: Everybody got The Block Burger ($10) -- ordered medium by all and served on a brioche (?) bun with white Cheddar. Two got lettuce, tomato and onion. I got it naked. Came with garlic aoli fries and pickled vegetables. The Crab & Risotto Cakes were crispy on the outside and soft yumminess on the inside. The vegetable slaw was a ridiculously fabulous complement to the cakes. The taste was creamy and crunchy of cabbage and carrot. The macaroni and cheese was creamy and used small shells, a nice pasta for this dish, 'cause the insides of the shells hold the sauce. The Shrimp & Chips was three perfectly cooked large shrimp of grand fresh flavor. The remoulade was quite tasty. The shoestring potatoes were just a garnish for crunch. The burgers were quite pink inside for medium and brimming with beefy, juicy flavor. No condiments required, although house-made ketchup and mustard were served in beautiful hammered shot glasses. The fries were skinny (like Steak 'n Shake, but not quite that skinny), and the garlic aoli shone through very well. One of our group had his whole burger fall apart, bun and all. I think it was because he had lettuce and tomato, and condiments on the burger. Probably too much moisture. Not sure that bun could withstand that. Salt and pepper were on the table in little bowls with itty-bitty spoons. Trying to put this extremely coarse salt (It was like flakes.) on the fries was impossible, 'cause it didn't stick. And one wrong flick of the spoon would put salt on something you didn't want to salt. There's nothing wrong with "regular" salt and pepper shakers. I think they've worked for a few years now. This was a whole lot of food. Two of us had to-go vessels (recyclable). I had 3/4 of my burger and half of my fries for another meal. And the fries warmed up well the next day, which is rather unusual for fries. They're usually a loss when taken home. Quite a fine lunch, and our sampling plan worked well! read more

I went to The Block in Webster Groves for the first time recently. It was fantastic. The atmosphere is hip but casual and unpretentious. We went for happy hour and all of the food was delicious. The regular dinner menu has a nice variety of meat dishes with some vegetable and chicken options all in the $10-$20 range. Like I expected, I was impressed by The Block. Food: Delicious. I had the rib-eye and it was cooked perfect. The potted pig appetizer was my favorite part of our experience though. It's a must try! I tried a bit of my neighbors' white wine braised pork (YUM) and the Missouri trout (YUM). However, I was not impressed by the pulled pork sandwich. I am not the biggest fan of pulled pork though, so I am no expert. Drink: Impressed. I didn't think The Block would have much for a drink menu, but I was wrong! I tried this seasonal pear cocktail and it was amazing! They have a decent beer and wine selection along with a variety of specialty cocktails. YAY! Service: Acceptable. It was a busy Wednesday night at The Block due to a special event that we didn't know about before we decided to dine here. Even with a few open tables, I can see why other yelpers said it can get really loud in there. And it was LOUD. The service was very friendly, but pretty slow. I have been to the block twice since I moved to webster groves in July. The first time we went to the block it was a Saturday and as Saturdays go... we had to wait two hours for a table. By time we sat down it was 9pm and we also had company from out of town with us who had a 2 months old.... it was hot and she was tired so after we ordered she was so upset we had to get our food to go! When we got home we ate, I had a pork chop with baked beans... the baked beans were very different and bean was hard- it was almost as if the beans were not cooked. The pork chop was cold and tough and had no flavor, I thought maybe this was because we brought it home so I kept an open mind and said I would go back. Just went back to the block tonight and had a pulled pork sandwich... the pork itself was good and a lot was on the bun, which I like! However, the pork had a weird flavor , something just did't taste right. The fries were great!, the slaw was not creamy like I like it. My friend and I were not satisfied with our dinner (she had the steak sandwich and didn't like it) so we decided to get dessert. We ordered the apple crisp... when we got the apple crisp it had maybe two bites of icecream on the top, some sort of crumbly stuff on top but not crispy and then uncooked apples and cranberries under.. worse "apple crisp" I have ever had! I told the waitress it was not good and she replied... "yea a lot of people say that about the apple crisp".... not sure why they leave it on the menu! I will not be back read more

The service is excellent, and the food is as good as it gets. We really enjoy dining here when we can, since the food is locally sourced, where possible, and they are exceptionally transparent about their ingredients. Second review for the Block. This time around I ordered the trout. It was prepared perfectly with a crisp cornmeal crust. It was on top of a creamy potato like substance with some green beans and friend onions. Like I said, cooked to absolute perfection! I really enjoy their SV by the glass. I forget the brand, but I highly recommend it. We tried a dessert this go around. We ordered an apple cobbler to split between three people. It was TINY. Do yourselves a favor and order one dessert per two people, not three! :) Go to the Block! read more
