A nice and cosy place for a pint or two. The fireplace and the yellow dim lights contribute to creating a great atmosphere. It's located right underneath the train station, so it could be a great place to stop by before taking the train back to Dublin. I work in Howth, and I take the DART to work daily. This place is great for a sneaky pint after work with the girls if we missed the train and have to wait for the next one. My husband and I have had dinner here as well. The food is better than regular pub food. He never eats fish, but since we were in Howth he got the fish and chips and really liked it. They also do really good specials. We had a pretty good bottle of white for 10 euro. And for any occasional homesick Americans, like myself, they have Blue Moon on tap. One of the few places around to have it! read more

Some of the reviews of this wee gem are mixed & a little unfair in my opinion. I have been here maybe 10 times in my 37yrs on this planet so I will try to lay it all down for you! The bloody stream is located in Howth, a lovely fishing village close to Sutton & Portmarknock. You have to walk down steps to gain access & on entering it can seem a little dark. The Dart station is directly overhead & somehow, when your sipping on your Guinness or Hot toddy!, the noise of the train on the tracks seems to transport you into another world. The ceilings are low & being a fishing village have nets & sailing what nots attached to them. They serve food, which is of a very good standard. Chowder, fresh catch, pasta dishes & steak have all been sampled & enjoyed. The roaring open log fire at one end is my favourite. The atmosphere is relaxed & as such, the staff don't mind if seats are moved to enjoy the fire. There is an upstairs too which concentrates more on food & has a less hustle & bustle feel. It seems the locals favourite this spot for their socialising which is always a good sign. As with any Restaurant/bar staff turnover can be high & that may account for some of the reviews. I love this place, perfect for a cold Sunday afternoon when you fancy something a little different. Enjoy. read more

The food is good, actually it's brilliant. Never ate something quite like it. The place doesn't appear too clean but it is well staffed. On today however they have a fire going, which adds a good warm air to the room read more

The fish and chips are great! The portion is very big and filling. It is pretty small but rustic and cozy. Our waiter was very friendly. When we went to leave trying to pay was not easy, they would not splitbthe check and it took a while and some asking before we could pay. However, I would go again. read more

My dad and I went here five years ago, and were determined to go again on our most recent trip to Dublin. I got the smoked cod, which was delicious (just a tad salty). Very easy to get to, as it's located underneath the Howth DART station, and you can take a walk on the doc, afterward to see the fishing boats and the lighthouse. read more

Delicious! I had the rum steak and it was very good. Tried a Guinness, also delicious! The food was divine but the service could have been better. But still I would go back! The environment is nice and it's pretty affordable so those are great pros. read more

If you can get in early enough to get a seat, this is a great place to grab a pint and watch a match or after a nice hike along the beautiful Howth coast. The pub is conveniently situated right under the train station so there is no reason to pass it up when coming to Howth. The pub is very cozy and warm, partly because of the lovely staff and partly because of roasting fire places. One of the best places to grab a pint of guinness. read more

At here last May while visiting Howth having heard of the place through a Dublin visitor's voucher and was very pleasantly surprised. I had wanted something in the seafood range but not too expensive, but with our aching legs after the Howth cliff walk we stopped in here after only a short exploration of options (it is RIGHT next to the DART station). Their pints are average, and the service was a bit slow but the fish and chips were some of the best I've had in Ireland. They even used false newspapers to simulate what they did in the old days which added a bit of charm. The place feels very rustic and seaside-y which is great considering where you are on the globe. There were some televisions so I assume they show matches here as well. read more

Doesn't seem like a very attractive name, does it? We went here one day because straight off the Dart it was the first pub in sight! It was a gorgeous day, and luckily we had the option of sitting outside to take it all in. The staff were friendly and not intrusive when they came by collecting our empty glasses! It was a really relaxing place to be on a sunny afternoon in Howth, and after a few pints you're in a great location to have a walk around on a non-windy day! But, in the cold winter-time, you have the option of sitting inside where you're comforted by a blazing fire, and a warm sense of going back in time as you look around at all the pictures and nick-nacks. The atmosphere is calm and relaxed, and you get a nice sense of homeliness inside. I'd recommend this to anyone heading to Howth for a few drinks during the day, haven't been here at night but I'd say it's just as great! read more

This pub is quite a nice starter for your visit to historic and unique Howth. Believe it or not, it gets its name from a real historical battle from the far distant past. Reminds me of a pub, back 20 years ago, before a lot of Dublin pubs became 'Yuppised'. It has a tranquil, relaxing atmosphere and blends in well to its environs and surroundings. Additionally, it's ideally located ant the Dart Station so is convenient and central. read more

The Bloody Stream is in the convenient location of being right next to and around the Howth Dart Station. This pub is always humming and always delivers great pints and also lunches. It's a bit dear but the atmosphere and option of sitting outside (it is under cover, so even when raining this is an option) make it worth that little bit extra. read more

we visited "The Bloody Stream" on 20/8'12 . The Guinness was great, but unfortunately the waiting time for the meal was a disaster. The waitress was lovely and apologised. Id first like to say, the food was delicious, the floor staff were lovely and totally accommodating and the overall atmosphere was great. After dinner, me and my two friends decided to order 3 irish coffees, which was met with a bad reaction from the barman. While i was standing there, he was blatantly complaining about having to make the coffees right in front of me and when he delivered the coffees he asked my friend to spread the word that they were "horrible" , so he wouldn't have to be put through such an ordeal as to make another one for anyone else. I also observed him serving other people and in particular, one german tourist was paying him and counting out his money, all the while said barman was humming and hawing and shaking his head at the customer who was obviously taking way too long to pay for his pint. I also left my bag at the table when I went to the bathroom and it was taken behind the bar. When I asked for the bag, one of the girls on the floor told me the barman would give it to me. When I asked for the bag, he disgruntledly looked at me and told me ask one of the girls to get it. Not great. The other barmen that were working with him looked visibly embarrassed by his behaviour . When we went to pay for our meal, the same barman seemed to be purposely avoiding us for a good ten minutes before he couldn't ignore us any longer and we eventually payed. Its a shame this barman ruined our experience in the Bloody Stream because it's such a beautiful place in such a beautiful setting. And just to add, that when we spoke of our experience, a friend of ours asked, was this the same place they hate making Irish coffees? read more

My family visited from the States last week, and the first thing my sister and her husband said was, let's go to the Bloody Stream! We all wound up going back there 2 more times. We had a great meal each time. The waitress (Iseult) gave us very good service on our first visit, and the service remained good throughout. The seafood chowder is excellent as a starter, but it's very hard to have a full meal with it, especially if you want dessert. The fish dishes on the menu are great, but keep an eye out for the specials--they are almost always worth it! I also like to get the mussels there. And the desserts are wonderful if you have the room. We go back there whenever we can. read more

My husband and I went into this restaurant after 2 pm today, and left close to 3 pm without having been fed. After forty minutes of waiting, the wrong order arrived. Then, after about ten more minutes, we were told that it would take another ten minutes for my main to be ready. All of this while other folk were getting fed and with a lukewarm apology from the manager before we left, hungry. I can't comment on the qualiity of the food - certainly the several platters I saw passing us by looked nice, but it's no good to you when they are being delivered to other tables!!! I really liked the atmosphere in this pub and the fact that they serve a couple of different types of beer beyond the ordinary. However, after one pint of their Galway Hooker ale I was violently sick. I have had this ale elsewhere and knew that it probably didn't taste quite right added to the fact that it took them several tries to pour it. Whatever it was, there was definitely a problem. I can safely state that, without exception, I will not be drinking here again. read more

Was up here with friends last night. And was getting a large drinks order on my own for the group who were out in the beer garden. I asked for a tray and was dismissively told by the consistently rude Australian bar woman that there was no trays despite the fact I could see a stack of about 15 of them sitting beside her. When I pointed this out she proceeded to ignore me and go and serve someone else. I asked another bar woman she said no problem, but recommended that the lounge girl carried it out. That was fine accept for the fact that the teenage lounge girl decided to give me an angry lecture about how I shouldn't order so many drinks at one time and if my friends want a drink they should come in and order it them selfs. I said I didn't ask you to carry it for me and I'll carry it myself. She then informed me I was too drunk and I would only spill it, before having what could only be described as a full blown tantrum of shoulder shrugging and huffing and puffing before finally carrying it out. When I'm paying 5 Euro plus for the enormous pleasure of drinking a pint of beer in your pub I think at the very least i shouldn't have to sit through a lecture from a stroppy teenager who doesn't want to do her job. I'll spend my money elsewhere in future thanks. read more

Having completed the beautiful cliff walk around Howth yesterday,Thursday, in beautiful sunshine we were hungry!! The Bloody Stream looked very inviting and has great atmosphere. Staff were friendly. However, the food was awful. We ordered fishcakes and they tasted like potato cakes, no fish taste at all. We also had chowder which was VERY thick and creamy but no taste of fish stock and precious little fish in it. We had a salad which contained ONE small piece of mozzarella cheese and though we requested bacon in the salad also, none was included. We were so disappointed as we expected excellent fish based dishes in a location such as Howth. read more

Probably the worst service I have ever experienced in a restaurant. I was there on Sunday 20th March during the prawn festival with some friends. We sat outside because the weather was fantastic but the attitude of the server put a real dampener on our experience. We had to ask him 3 times to bring us water; he sniggered when my friend ordered a soft drink; he commented that despite it being the prawn festival, none of us ordered prawns for our meals, but the way he said it wasn't at all funny. He was very pass remarkable. We observed him being rude to other customers around us...one couple were feeding their young baby, and he wasn't happy that they only ordered pints and were taking up a table. When we finished our meals, we made sure not to leave a tip...that's only for good service and what we received was horrible service. read more

tried this place twice was sick after eating here first time ,bu, friends wanted to try it as it was so close to dart and miserable wet and freezing holy moley was so ill after 2nd visit as were some of the crowd who had seafood ....
