Yep, the Dube is a dive. It's not the cleanest place, the service is mediocre at best, and the music is usually way too loud. When it's crowded with drunk college kids and North Campus types, walking in there can feel a bit like walking right into a bad movie with the sound turned up too high. However.... I have had some great times at the Blue Danube! The food tastes much better when you've been drinking and the atmosphere also becomes a lot more fun when you're one of the loud drunks. They also offer a good range of vegetarian food, which is a plus for any type of diner IMO; the lentil soup and veggie burger are about as wholesome as you can get at 2:00am. I also used to live almost across the street from the Dube, so the sketchiness of the neighborhood does not bother me. 4 stars for being good at what it is! read more

I love the Dube. I moved 500 miles away to the biggest city in the country and I still haven't found a replacement for it! I guess most of my love is probably just sentimental, since I spent practically a night every week here for four years, but I still go back and eat there whenever I'm in town. As much as the food isn't spectacular in the "fine dining" sense, the zesty fries are probably the best thing you can eat for $2.25 (or however much they are these days). I usually regret going here when my stomach gets mad at me afterward for ingesting so much grease, but it's totally worth it. Out of all the times I've gone (and that's a lot, okay?) I've only had a bad experience with a server once. In conclusion, I would appreciate it if someone would clone the Dube and bring it to New York so I could eat there all the time like I used to! I do not know what has happened at the Dube?? We have not been there in about a month. I took my family there last night and the once delicious & creamy hand made Deep Fried Macaroni Bites have been replaced with obviously mass produced triangles of Kraft-style cheese food (VERY disappointing). The Black Bean Veggie Burger my daughter ordered was so salty (Morningstar Farms-like) that she had just 2 bites before she had to quit. I ordered the classic Dube-Double described as "2 Cheese Burgers with choice of toppings" I ordered one with swiss-one with cheddar...I received one burger with 2 GFS patties and 1 slice of American cheese! My wife had the Salmon BLT and said it was OK, but he bacon was stringy. Service was ok-to slow though I did not recognize any of the wait staff. read more

I went to the Blue Danube for breakfast last weekend. I'm about to move from Columbus to Cincinnati and this was on my list of places to go before I move. It's a Columbus institution and it's a dive, which is what I expected, which is exactly what I got. I like diner-type breakfasts, so I was perfectly happy with the cheesy potato-y egg-y vegetarian breakfast burrito. My husband was really happy with his omelet and the surprisingly good marbled rye toast that came with it. The service was good and friendly despite the fact that I think that our server had a huge section. The coffee was just okay. The highlight of visiting the Dube is staring at the awesome painted ceiling tiles, and the food is good enough, so go at least once in your life. read more

The 'Dube, as a restaurant is probably only deserving of 2 stars. If you're looking for a place to eat, I strongly suggest you go anywhere else (unless you're looking for a good breakfast burrito). As a bar, however, the 'Dube has possibly the best selection of alcohol in all of Columbus. Seriously, if you can think of it, odds are they have it. Also, while prices have gone up at the 'Dube over the last couple of years, high-end booze is still a pretty good deal compared to other bars that offer things like 16 year-old scotch. The service is generally spotty -- but if you go in more than once or twice, you'll find that the staff remembers you and are mostly pretty nice people. The jukebox has a eclectic mix of music, from jazz to old-school rock to contemporary pop and hip-hop. The place simply oozes personality... though it's not the kind of personality everyone is looking for. If you're looking for an evening (or afternoon) of beers and shots, look no further. If you're looking for a cocktail, or a dining experience... man, you picked the wrong place. It's a Columbus institution for a reason, but that doesn't mean that it's for everyone. It's beyond me how it took so long to get here. I guess driving by my impression was an old place that wasn't really that popular that I would try later. When I finally made it in for Sunday Brunch it was teeming with people and high energy. Not loud or overwhelming but kind of "why in the world have I not been here?" It's like a really large diner with comfort food and eclectic combinations. We sat right away and our very nice waitress was there quickly. We both ordered bloody marys which were delicious and cheap. Not even a special they were 4.50 which is pretty special. Because they have biscuits and gravy I, of course, had to try those so I got my friend to split and order with me. They were fine. Didn't love the sausage gravy but it wasn't bad. I want chunks of sausage. Come to think of it maybe it wasn't sausage gravy but just gravy. I am also from the school of thought that the more gravy the better in this situation so I wanted more! I ordered the Huevos Rancheros which was great. My friend ordered the breakfast quesadilla which she also enjoyed. Really liked our eclectic server also. This review is solely for the lame female 'bartender' that's been working there for at least a year or two now. I and my gf went in the Dube last week for a late dinner. I ordered a bourbon-coke and when it was brought to me, I held the glass and it was very warm. Yea, warm. I thought I was having a stroke or something, the nerves in my fingers not working right. But no, the glass was warm and I waited for the 'occupant behind the bar', who was very busy chatting and leaning on the bar at the other end of the room. So I sat and literally watched my drink water down... Finally she came back and I said to her 'You know, that glass was warm, right?'. Her response was classic: 'But it was CLEAN'. Apparently, this 'employee' can't manage to keep a stock of clean and (at least) room temperature cocktail glasses behind the bar (and no, the place was not busy). There was no 'sorry, let me make you a proper drink' or anything. It was just her ineptitude on display that night. To be honest, I've experience this moronic mixologist before, though this was the best example yet of her non-dedication to her duties. 'Nuff said. read more

I hadn't been here in a few years so I decided it was time to check it out again. The menu looked interesting but in the end I decided to have a hamburger, loaded (can't remember what they called it). It came with one patty, loaded up with onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and pickle. I opted for a side dish of macaroni and cheese. The hamburger was overcooked and the mac & cheese was cooked in one of these little casseroles, instead of using it just to serve it. I like The Dube. Its got your average clientele of hipster college students for a diner that you would expect. The ceiling tiles are all fancied up with different works of art. The whole atmosphere of this place just makes me want to go back more and more. Although when it is pretty busy it can be kind of cramped but im not one to complain about that stuff. The menu is a little bizzare, with a combination of diner classics to odd concoctions. So whatever your tastes are im sure you'll find something to your liking. I don't understand why people are all hatin' on the Dube, this place is a Columbus institution. For me, it's a bit like Columbus itself - a bit dirty, a bit uncool, but it's cheap and you find yourself there sometimes whether you like it or not. That sounds a bit harsh, but I do like the Dube. My dad took us here all the time when I was a kid, prolly 'cause it's right next to Dick's Den. The Blue Danube is exactly what I want every time I go. It has everything from gyros to fish and chips, breakfast burritos to hotdogs and cocktails. It's the perfect morning after spot, or where you can go chill out with friends when you don't know what you feel like eating. I would personally like to recommend the breakfast burrito which is effing huge, or the huevos rancheros, which are amazing. I don't know which is better, actually. There's also a huge bar inside! Service is always friendly and efficient, and super laid back. I love this place. It's also super affordable, and seems like it's always open, but has been around forever. Jan 29, 2011 - My boyfriend and I became VIOLENTLY ill about an hour after eating at The Dube. We shared the liver & onions, beets & cottage cheese as a side, and sweet potato fries. The fries were supposed to be an appetizer but the waiter didn't bring them until he had all of our food. My boyfriend also had the chicken noodle soup. It was none too fresh. The chicken was half pink and gristle, and the broth was VERY old. Plus, there was a HAIR in it. He gave it back - they took it off the bill. However, we both had diarrhea and vomiting within 90 minutes-2hours of eating there. Besides the chicken soup, everything else tasted great. But the cramps started, and the sweating, plus the violent urge to vomit later. It was terrible. Additionally, while we were there, my boyfriend had to alert the bartender to the fact that there was vomit or diarrhea all over the men's toilet seat. In the ladies room, I had to flush before using since the toilet was full of blood and unmentionables - GROSS. That evening, my boyfriend called and spoke to "A" manager, the manager. She said she was so sorry and she would take care of it. We thought that meant we could have our money back. The bill was only $20.25. The next day, both of us still weak and not feeling well, we drove to the Dube and the same "A" manager refused to give us our money, stating that food poisoning takes 24 hours to hit, according to the NURSE on staff there. Why would a NURSE need to work there? In any case, the distinctive quality of food poisoning is that it hits almost IMMEDIATELY - usually within 1-3 hours, depending on your digestive system. Amanda said she couldn't authorize the return of our money. Really? for $20? REALLY? "A" manager needs a lesson in business etiquette, public health code, and responsible management. And I definitely don't want to get health care from wherever that supposed nurse on staff works during the day. My boyfriend returned to the Dube today and spoke to another manager who gave him our money immediately and said that the place was falling to poo anyway. Nice. I'm filing a public health complaint against them. It's not the first time I've felt queasy after eating there, but I always shrugged it off. This time, the projectile vomit and horrible cramps changed my mind. This wasn't me. This was the result of poor sanitation practices at The Dube. BEWARE!! read more

As a connoisseur of breakfast burritos, and a man of many places, I have never found a breakfast burrito that tops The Breakfast Burrito at the Dube. I owe to myself to visit the Dube at least once per visit to Columbus. Nothing in Chicago comes close. Whether it's size or variety of ingredients, nothing compares. Combine that with the presentation of the dish and you have my perfect meal. The service is great and my glass always stays full. Though they have a great beer selection, I'm usually in here prior to sundown, so I stick to my iced tea. The Dube also introduced me to a hot sauce that I'd never seen before. One that is made from cayenne pepper, my favorite, and is also made in Columbus. My final reason for loving the Dube is that 9 times out of 10, I'll run into someone that I know when I stop here. We decided to go to the Blue Danube out of a misplaced sense of nostalgia. And because we just sorta wanted a bite to eat and a drink. So what we got was an unreadable menu (seriously, people, dark turquoise paper with black print in a funky font and no decent lighting?), really amazingly bad drinks (flat soda, and mingy in size), and a waitress who, while easily the prettiest person in the place, was inept to the point of being funny. So I order a Greek salad. People, what kind of dressing comes with a Greek salad? Surely some sort of basic vinagarette, even in the lamest of places? Not here - it came on the side, so I poured it over the salad, and it turned out to be an overly sweet, thick Italian something or another. So when the waitress finally stopped by (well, to be fair, she and the other help were very busy chatting in the back, so why should she hurry to serve customers?), and I asked about the dressing, she said, and I quote 'I have no idea, I only work here' and SCURRIED away from the table. She did come back some 10 or 15 minutes later, when all my table mates were done with their food, and made some insincere 'well, I can get you something else' noises, but when I asked about the dressing again (cause I really just wanted to know what the hell was in it), she again snarled 'I just work here' and fled. I would have spoken to a manager, but really couldn't identify anyone who looked like they were actually working there, so I didn't bother. And yes, she left the uneaten salad on the bill. This is a decent, casual place to come for some good old bar food. I've always enjoyed the food I've ordered here, while not anything special, it's cheap and hits the spot when you're out enjoying some adult beverages. The service has always been decent and the drinks are reasonable. I do wish the place would update a bit. The ceiling tiles are older and tend to make me lose my appetite a bit and the booths/chairs/tables all need to be replaced. "Each tile on the ceiling is decorated by a different artist, arguably over different eras based on content and smoke damage (seriously you can see the yellowing from pre-smoking ban). I wonder how an artist gets the honor to decorate a tile? Inquiring minds need to know!" I have been going to the Dube (and loving it) for over 30 years. So I can address this question. The artists bought the honor for a ridiculously cheap price, (I want to say $2, but it may have been $5) decorated them, and gave them back to be hung on the ceiling. I think this was back in the early 80s. Some of them may have been replaced since then. The place is shabby (and always has been) but I've never found it to be less than clean, and the staff has always been friendly and competent. The food I order is always solidly good. I like the Cobb Salad, the Spanikopita, and Gyros, my wife likes their Reuben and French Dip. read more

So around 20 of us went in for a late afternoon meal. We all ordered, not all one check. Which makes thing easier when we are done. We all order our meals. And the wait begins. After watching people come in after us order the eat , then leave, we still sat their. So we look over at the kitchen, and the plates pile up in the window, Watching the waitress go through each ticket. But nothing was being brought out to the table. Whom ever was running the kitchen decided that nothing was going out until all the orders were done, So the food just sat in the window. An hour and a half goes by. So we all are getting hungry , but the plates all just sit their in the window. When they actually started bring food out. It was a shame. It was cold and really kinda nasty. So when you have multiple checks on a large party, why would you hold food in the window for over an hour. Most of us told the waitress that we will pay for our drinks but we are leaving. It was such a waste of our time and an even bigger waste of food. All of us will not be returning again! read more

An OSU neighborhood institution. The atmosphere looks as if a Beefsteak Charlie's was mutated with a Big 10 college dive bar circa 1970. This place is very efficient and super reasonable. Someone in the kitchen must really know food for them to successfully make an "Irish Eggroll"- a very tasty mix of egg roll and sauerkraut. Long live the 'Dube'!! read more
