Windows were closed up and no air conditioning running on a hot summer's day. There is 1 small window air conditioner for the entire place. Besides the heat, the first thing you notice is the gross, mildewy smell when you walk in the front door. Smells like Grandma's attic. Plus, black mold all around the bathtub. The Master Bedroom bed felt like a concrete slab. And what they don't show you on the website is that 3 out of 4 beds are actually in an attached garage & literally placed next to the Inn's storage area of vacuum cleaners, towels etc. Speaking of supplies, they don't even supply toilet paper. At least they were kind enough to supply a fly swatter, so you could swat at all the flying insects landing on you while you're trying to sleep in a garage. Then the cleaning lady busts in the cottage the next morning to do loads of laundry during your stay. We were scheduled to stay 2 nights but we couldn't handle 1 more night and chose to stay at another hotel. If you make the mistake of staying at this place, BYOTP (bring your own toilet paper) and be prepared for a rough night ahead. Before writing this review I brought my concerns to the hotel owner. She was rudely dismissive and refused to refund us for the extra night.

It's the kind of place you learn to appreciate although you may complain about the vintage cooking utensils or the fact that you have to actually hand wash your dishes and clothes, and your AC unit is simply the same breeze that blows a tall ships sail to the Island of Mackinaw. At Shaginapi your portals that keep you connected to social obligations and the daily grind are pretty much just used only when your forced to take a trip into town to stock your vintage fridge with dairy products (about 30 minutes away) Now I have to admit yes I would rather spend a few weeks with a little more tangible benefits. I mean lets be realistic, who doesn't enjoy a walking distant to the spa or a chilled tall drink with a fancy umbrella served by the "Beautiful People" But I also would like to believe that Nature is good for you, Right? The bathroom - although very small - was more than adequate for our needs. We loved the tile shower And old fashioned ceramic sink on metal legs. Best of all the hot water was INSTANT when you turned the tap. No waiting around for hot water to finally reach you. I did not give it five stars because the place is in need of updating...our understanding is that it changed owners a few years ago and there is clearly a lot of work to be done to make the place look fresh. i would also recommend that you bring your own bath towels as the ones provided were a bit small and thin. If you are someone who likes a Hampton Inn/Holiday Inn Express style room and facility, this is NOT the place for you. If you are less picky and enjoy a bit of an adventure and a bit of a throwback experience, this might be the place for you. I hope that the owners are able to update this piece of history to make it more attractive for those of us who prefer something A little out of the ordinary.
