FULL DISCOSURE: I am a meowmmy so I am reviewing from a Cat Person perspective although I have many friends with dogs so I visit often to pick up treats or gifts for them. THAT SAID, as someone who has lived in the community for decades and as a regular customer who has politely made requests or offered feedback as someone who DESPERATELY WANTS/NEEDS A NEIGHBORHOOD STORE THAT SELLS QUALITY CAT RESOURCES AT REASONABLE PRICES- Bone Appetite is NOT it. They offer a very limited selection of goods for felines while Dog Items and Services are wonderful, even OUTSTANDING. In fact, since the pandemic, they offer LESS cat products while still maintaining dog supplies and adding new dog items. So.....this place is phenomenal for ONLY DOG people. Cat People continue to be ignored, disrespected and just hated on. Luckily, in these hard times, I can just share my chicken, turkey and fish with my furbaby and call it a day. Amazon supplies my cat litter. The Dollar Store offers cheap toys. This Chestnut Hill store is always clean. The employees are friendly and polite. It's a boutique store that is specific to canine clients. They don't pretend to cater to other animals- its BONE Appetite with a DOG on the Window. LOL, its all good. Cat people know how to survive. But if you are a newbie and think you might find something for your feline friend- don't waste your time. I only go because its near my home but even then, it's ONLY for other people's dogs, not for my sweet ball of fur. They fresh assorted meat jerky is a nice new addition for easy treat purchases that are excellently priced. read more

This review is for the manager Demetrius Hogue of the Bone Appeptite. I left my dog to get groomed on a Friday with groomer and Demetrius Hogue the manager. Tall brown skin black male with twisted/locced colored hair Ran a few errands and deposited a check unfortunately TD bank on Germantown Ave closed early that day as a result i was unable to pull funds as they were all on hold until the next day. When i went to retrieve my pure bred $3500 German shepherd i explained to Demetrius the bank was closed but i could leave my card on file to charge the $125. I also left the groomer a $20 tip. Demetrius Hogue did not agree to this and instead stated he would have to keep my dog overnight. I thought that was strange as the store doesn't board dogs but i acquiesced bc i thought the manager who lied and said he was the owner was a relatively sane person. I also thought it strange that he was being highly anxious about $125 after me offering to leave my id and cc on file and i live in the neighborhood and my child also goes to school in the neighborhood. Im literally near the store daily either at weavers way or a coffee shop. When i returned the next morning when they opened at 9 am a different worker was there and was not informed about anything. 2. Demetrius Hogue did not leave the staff any information rather they had to call him and he informed the staff worker that he put my dog in a shelter with ACCT Philly. 3. Demetrius Hogue did not contact me to let me know he did this despite the store having my information on file as he called me when my dog was finished with her grooming appointment. 4. I contacted police and reported theft bc Demetrius did not have the right or legal authority to place my chipped dog with ACCTPhilly 5. I contacted 911 for a stolen dog and pressed charges against Demetrius Hogue and placed an ad in the chestnut hill local for him to be terminated from the store as his behavior was not pro dog. 6. Demetrius Hogue traumatized a dog that is chipped cared for attends daycare and loved for $125 that the customer provided even AFTER learning her dog was given to a shelter. 7. I'm local to the neighborhood so there was no reason to keep and essentially abuse my dog he's dangerous and shouldn't be allowed in a pet store or near anyone's furry family member. 8. For the above stated reasons i will not support nor do i recommend the community support this establishment while Demetrius Hogue is still employed as he does not understand what pets mean to family members and he should not be around people's pets as he's abusive. He needs to be terminated asap. read more

This used to be a good spot for grooming, but seems to be under new ownership and service has been spotty at best. Three appointments in a row were cancelled due to their scheduling errors and other (less avoidable) issues, and the manager's attitude seems to be "the customer is always wrong." The groomers are good and kind, but I can't bring myself to go back after recent experiences there. read more

We have been taking our Standard Poodles to The Bone Appetite since they opened and the managers and groomers have come and gone, as of course they would, but we have always had good experiences there. Demetrius, the manager, is very communicative if there is a problem--last week, when our dog was groomed there, he called to say his hair was matted, and even showed us a photo of the matting--and then offered us a second grooming session because we had initially asked not to have his hair cut too close (the second version was excellent). read more

She didn't accept us despite having a schedule because according to her she's fully booked. She likes the home made treats that look like real doughnuts and yummy cookies. We can also get her toys here too but my mom says they're too expensive and besides, she would eat out of the garbage if she could. But anyway, I like it a lot. Went to purchase a dog cake for my golden retrievers second birthday. They had a nice selection of treats and I ended up getting him a nice individual sized doggie treat. It was not cakelike but definitely served its purpose. The rest of the store was filled with toys and pet accessories. The Bone Appetite - Birthday dog treat for Palmer! - Pet Stores Near Me - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Poor customer service. I have been going here because I live in the neighborhood and is convenient, but I won't be going here anymore. I would rather go out of my way to get my dog groomed than ever go here again. Serveral times I have been here I have not been greeted despite 3 young women behind the counter. When checking out at the register, almost everytime it's with silence or uncomfortable stares. It is so uncomfortable! This most recent time I went in for a nail trim for the dog. It was my dog's first time having her nails trimmed by an older woman (40s?) with medium long blonde hair. I kindly asked her to not pick up my dog because she is a total scardy cat, but before I could finish my sentence, she picks her up and places her on the stand. Meanwhile, my dog is shivering like no other. Other times it has been with Terra and another older woman with blonde hair and bangs, both very professional and understanding of my dog's needs. I appreciated that they understood my dog did not want to be picked up. They had no problem with trimming her nails on the ground. If a groomer had an issue with bending to the ground to trim my dog's nails, I would completely understand and ask if I could lift my dog up myself, but there was no mention of that sort. The groomer then starts trimming my dog's nails with a dremel (not nail clippers). She does the job and I get my dog back. At check out, a young woman (teens to 20s) asked me what tool the groomer used and I told her it was a dremel, thinking it was strange because I have had my dog in many a times and have never been asked that question. So, I ask if there is a price difference between the dremel and the nail clippers. She told me the nail clippers are $10, while the dremel is $15. Seeing my puzzled face she asked me if the groomer had asked me which option I would like. I told her the groomer didn't ask me anything and the young woman at register just said "oh" and proceeded to have me pay $15. I went home with my dog and as soon as she was walking on our hardwood floor I heard clicking. After a nail trim, there is normally very minimal clicking while my dog is walking on hard wood floor, yet after this appointment, it was like I never took her to get her nails trimmed at all! I checked her nails and most of them were untouched. And my dog's nails were not to the point where they couldn't be trimmed. My dog's nails had not been trimmed for over a month and they were touching the ground when standing. I called a few days later (I was busy to go back) and wanted a touch up on her nails. I asked if I could come in and have ANYONE but the groomer from last time trim my dogs nails. The woman who answered my phone call told me I had to come in on a day Donna was working or if I came in while another groomer was working, I would be charged again. My poor dog. I would not want her to go back and be groomed by that woman. I would rather go someone else and repay to get my dog's nails trimmed. read more

I really want to like this place because it's super cute... But each time I go, I sense negativity from the employees and owner. The final straw was when one employee followed me around the store as if I was going to steal something. I was offended and it was hurtful. So even though I see the cutest things in the window, it's easy to make the decision to not go in (and to not drop so much money--they're expensive)! read more

We rescued our pit mix, Britt, from the Philadelphia ACCT, where we were informed that she had quite a rough life prior to arriving. Thus, we went to work immediately on spoiling her. We brought Britt into Bone Appetite on the first day we got her and had a great experience. The best part of BA is the bulk gourmet treats section and the bakery. The bakery seriously looks like it's for human consumption. I seriously considered ordering the peanut butter cannoli. We got Britt a few of the apple-chicken biscuits and a peanut butter cookie from the bakery. When you had it as rough as she did, you deserve a $3 cookie! Not sure what the deal is with the negative reviews around service. Our experience was quite positive with young man working behind the counter. Looking forward to visiting again. read more

I went here twice. The first time there was a cute little dog on the counter so I made a little fuss over it. The two girls behind the counter looked at each other like I was from mars. Really? In a dog shop? Expect crazy dog ladies to come in! And I wasn't even being crazy! Just, like, petting it and saying it was cute! Ok. Decided maybe it was a bad day or something so I went again about a year later. Cashier was moody like she didn't want to be there. I had chosen a "gourmet" treat for my dog and she said in an unfriendly tone "This will need to be refrigerated immediately!" (it was the middle of July). I assured her I lived 10 minutes away. I'll never shop here again. Glad to see I'm not the only one who has noticed the unfriendliness of this place. read more

Stopped in here to check out the selection get some presents for my dog for doing a great job at existing. Pup bakery treats are pretty expensive, but cute. Good selection of dog toys and gear. Ended up going with a kong squeaker toy (one of the heavy duty ones). While at the counter I was making a comment to my husband about how it probably wouldn't last too long with our heavy chewer dog. The counter lady made an off hand comment about how they don't refund toys which made me feel a little uncomfortable. Will probably come back in the future as it is a well stocked local shop. Adorable pet shop! I always stop here after going to the dog park or while I'm waiting for a table at a nearby restaurant. They're open on Sundays, which is a rarity for a lot of businesses in Chestnut Hill. They have a wonderful supply of toys, treats, and the like that you would expect at a pet store. The service is friendly. They have a room in the back full of a wide selection of pet food. I usually allow my dog to choose a treat when we make a stop there- but I know it's always going to be the first thing she finds at nose level! I see that they are moving a few doors down on Germantown, and it looks like they are going to offer a variety of additional services for pets. I'll be sure to check it out! read more

This is not the one on Germantown Ave. This one is in Old(e) City on N. 3rd Street. Bone Appetite sells doggie (and kittie) gear, treats, pet food, supplies and custom-made (expensvie) bakery treats. Akin to "Doggie Style", but a smaller feel & vibe. The dog treat my daughter selected was $3.25 and was super-small. (Not cool, but I'm a sucker and bought it anyway.) They also have a PAWS cat (or 2) up for adoption at any given time. Friendly front-desk lady - knew her products. Surprisingly GOOD prices on ZEKE's hip-action treats. I shoulda got some - it might have made up for the over priced doggie baked goods. read more

60 dollars and all she did was wash and clip her face and genitals... no ears, I don't believe her nails and they put her in a cage to dry with fans no pressure dryer or blow dryer. The price seems a bit exuberant. I live in the area so it is convenient but I don't feel the service was worth the price. FYI. You can wash+dry your pet at this location for 10-15 dollars. This includes shampoo and conditioner please consider that when reviewing groomer(s) price. Which is by discretion. There is no set price, they don't require groomers to include a price list based on breed and or size. This practice seems dubious to me. read more

The Bone Appetite is a charming pet store in Chestnut Hill's even more charming downtown stretch along Germantown Avenue. This place is more than just any old pet store -- it's a pet paradise! I came here with my twin sons Bradley and Bryan (B'n'B) in a recent afternoon. I recently divorced with Cynthia, their mother and my wife of 14 years. They live with her in Glenside whereas I live in Manayunk. Most of the reasons for the divorce lay with me. I worked as an actuary for several years, largely focusing on risk valuation models for parking garage companies before moving on to loss segregation modules for DEB Stores, one of the most innovating and exciting franchises in the woman's retail industry. I threw myself into my career and grew distant to B'n"B as a result. I also fear change. However, I recently embarked on a new career as a writer, working for Contingencies Magazine -- a trade publication put out by the American Academy of Actuaries. I had a wonderful creative writing professor in college (Ramapo in Mahwah, NJ) who encouraged me to go that route. And I finally did. I broke this new to B'n'B at a lunch at the nearby Roller's Espresso (Truly five stars as well). I told them I did this because I wanted to take more chances. That way, they'll feel free to take chances with their lives, too. Bryan has always been happy-go-lucky and he has seemingly handled things well. The divorce has been hard on Bradley, who has taken to wearing T-Shirts that say "I have no real dad" to school. He largely just puts on his headphones when he's around me. But this time he took them out. And he asked me if he could become a member of Imagine Dragons (what I'm told is a rock group). I told him that he should go for it. He should go for anything he wants to. The kids asked me why I brought them to a dog-themed pet store. They had always wanted a dog. A few months back, I decided to adopt a cat for them and named him Dog. I got him because cats are easier to take care of and I had a fear of commitment and he's adorable. Dog The Cat has been a wonderful part of the family. But since I'm working from home now, and I am trying to change, that Dog The Cat should have a sibling. We got some toys and dog biscuits. And then we met up with Anna From Accounts Payable from my old job (nice lady -- married) who fostered an Irish Wolfhound. He's now a member of our family. And we've named him Cat. We now have Cat The Dog and Dog The Cat. (LOL!) I would recommend The Bone Appetite to anyone in Northwest Philadelphia who wants to encourage their twin sons to really go for their dreams and to also show they're making a renewed commitment to their family after divorcing from their mother. read more

Whenever I drop my dog off at Philly Dog Spot to be groomed I always stop at Bone Appetite to shop around. Several years ago I worked in chestnut hill and was fortunate enough to stop in regularly. Back then the woman at the counter was always friendly, kind and knowledgeable. I believe she may have been the owner.. The last few times I've stopped in the girls at the counter have failed to greet me or ask me if I needed assistance, even though I was the only customer in the store. Today the girl behind the counter was especially rude. It seems as though these girls have the attitude that they don't need my business, and therefore I won't be giving it to them anymore. read more

While I don't go to stores for my dog to make friends, I have to say that a couple of the staff seem just plain annoyed and/or depressed to be there. I have to be in the area every Saturday morning lesson, so it is convenient to occasionally run in and grab what i need. Still, while I am an ardent buy-local kinda gal, I feel no loyalty, alliance or willingness to go out of my way to support or promote them. They could care less whether I come there or not, so I could care less about whether I buy from them or anywhere else. Grooming there was okay - my dog looked slightly better when I picked him up than when I dropped him off but with such lackadaisical customer service, I'll spend my grooming money at Philly Dog Spot and go anywhere else I can pick up quality dog supplies. read more

Took our bichon here for a grooming. We've been to a few different places to have him groomed. Normally, the groomer shaves him down due to being matter or doesn't cut him how we'd like. However, Bone Appetite was able to give him exactly the cut we wanted. The grooming staff was very friendly as well. I think we found our permanent place to have him groomed. I would definitely recommend them to anyone looking for a groomer. read more

Yes, the prices may seem high initially, but if you look online or at other stores for the same exact brands, you will find that Bone Appetite is priced the same or lower in most every case. What happened to customer service these days? I visited the new location for Bone Appetite and browsed throughout the entire store. Yet, neither the owner (who btw was on the phone the entire time) or her employee greeted me. When I asked them questions about grooming services they acted like I was bothering them. They don't have any prices on most of the items and they do not carry a large variety of dog food. Please, please do yourself a favor and visit Doggie Style instead. They have various locations throughout the city. And as a whole, Doggie Style stores are much friendlier, they have a larger variety of dog leashes/harnesses and better food. I have never been a fan of the customer service or attitude at this Chestnut Hill pet shop, but I did go there in a pinch as it is a few blocks from my house. In the summer they started grooming services and as the owner has the same type of dog as I do, I figured they would do a good job. And they did. And it was conveniently in the neighborhood and open on Saturdays and Sundays. This weekend about an hour after dropping the dog off for his regular grooming appointment I got a call from a clueless front desk person saying there was a "slight problem" with my dog. What they called a slight problem was actually the cutting off of the end of my dog's tail. When I arrived at the shop they had him on the table and were continuing to groom him with his tail wrapped in a loose ace bandage and still profusely bleeding. Apparently the groomer I was used to had quit and a new groomer had been hired, which no one bothered to tell me when I brought the dog in. They have also not called since the incident to check on the dog (or on me). Please don't take your dog to be groomed at Bone Appetit for his/her safety and your peace of mind. read more

I have a beautiful 8 month old Pit mix puppy named Pearl who has some tummy issues and this place has been so helpful from the moment we brought her home as a tiny pup. Pearl would definitely give it 5 paws! Lol From the knowledgable staff, great toy selections, and whole food dog food choices this place is amazing. I've been able to find food that Pearl can eat and all natural organic treats that she loves. Yes, some things are a bit pricey but I'm a fur mommy and nothing is too expensive for my beautiful girl, especially when it comes to her being healthy. I love that they are willing to give other suggestions and options other than what they sell in their store. Example: we needed a good probiotic for Pearl to help her digest properly...I went in the shop, explained the issue and the staff was so helpful. They told me that I could always give her a probiotic powder in her food or a pill each day but I should try giving her Greek yogurt everyday since I am passionate about giving her whole foods. It worked! And she loved it! They even went further and suggested I add sweet potatoes to her diet, it worked too! I was so happy to have a whole foods option. Overall I really love this place and always have a good experience when I come in. They know who I am when I walk in the door and they know Pearl which means a lot to me. read more

Super cute store! I'm not actually a pet owner, but I have bought dog treats from here for my mother-in-law's dog and the dog goes crazy for them. The store has a cute little pet bakery setup with the treats displayed in the glass case. For Christmas, we bought a bone shaped cookie for dogs that was covered with icing and sprinkles and the dog loved it. We left it in the bag and she ended up sticking her whole face in the bag to get the treat. She then sat there for 30 mins eating it. It was great. The treat was $3, so I think it is a little pricey, but it is a cute store and fun to buy the bakery treats. read more

Just went to the Bone Apetie in Chestnut Hill Philadelphia to clear up a problem I had with an employee there named Ben . I told the female employee Who is really nice how he treated me and what he had said. She agreed he had no right to say what he had said. She told me to ignore him and that I can bring my dog in when she is there on Thursday and Friday. She made me feel a lot better but I will never go in there when he is working , only when she is there. She is a wonderfull employee and always get good service from her. Today, as we were out walking in the snow, our puppy was sporting a terrific heavy fleece jacket we got at Bone Appetite. The little shop is well stocked with premium foods, toys, clothes and a case of bakery goods. The owner is extremely knowledgeable and makes excellent suggestions.
