Time for an update! I've been giving Book Stop more visits lately, and while my original review is still valid, I find myself letting go of the book quality issue more. And I'm just enjoying the store a lot more as a result. Yes, some of the books are in crazy bad condition, but the amount of old and unique books in this store outweigh this to me now. I do often find books that I really want, but have to deny because of condition, but that's ok because I can usually find 2-3 others that are in fine condition that I want just the same. I've got a great collection of unique, pre-1910 books going, and many of them I found at Book Stop. Also, I solved the issue about pricing, or lack thereof. If the book doesn't have a penciled in price on the first pages, the general rule of thumb for more current books is 1/2 of the cover price. Older books you still have to ask, but most of the older books seem to be priced on the book. I stop in probably once a month, or whenever they're having a sale. I like the owner, she's quiet but nice and clearly a book lover. The prices are a bit high for some of the books given the quality, but that's ok because of the unique finds and treasure to be had here. read more

I have been a customer of the Bookstop for many years, and was pleased to see that the store has reopened after the virus shutdown, (6/6/'20). The store accepts books as credit toward books you buy, and also accepts books as donations. (Prices are very reasonable.) I am an avid reader, and have run across books I would have been unlikely to find elsewhere. I love the quiet, low key, laid back ambience of the place and the friendly helpful manager Tina. Book Stop Used Books is an old time, book lovers haven, most of which have been displaced by the bland corporate stores. The space is taken up by an immense selection of used books, in all subjects. I love the ambiance, worn out & unusual, just perfect for wandering & reading. A great experience any time. They are coming off from a move from 2504 N Campbell Ave after the greedy landlord up'ed the rent & put in "new windows" to attract high end yuppie tenants. Most of the "mom & pops" were forced to abandoned or just thrown out. read more

I walked in with low aspirations, walked out with Sartre, Marquez, Eggers, Camus, Nabokov, Steinbeck and Salinger, almost dropped far too much on a signed first printing Vonnegut, found a fairly beautiful little book about a mule printed far, far too long ago (That book is the best smelling book I've ever known, even beat out my 50's Voltaire compilation). I mean, the place is great to just peruse, you'll find something. I actually even came here while on a date to waste some time, and we sat on the floor reading vintage erotic stories about "love business," perused the film and music biographies, sat with a photo book for awhile. It was oddly romantic. I can't condone sitting on the floor for hours here, but it's definitely a great place to find used books, and they seem to take care and time in grabbing what's good. read more

This is my absolute place to get lost in. I usually spend hours in here. I love the smell of books and reading old style books, out of print books, rare, hard to find ones! This is one of my very favorite places to get lost in. There are nooks and crannies with books that surprise, delight, raise eyebrows. Books that just smell good. Books in every genre and of every subject. And when you're looking for a book on a specific topic, you will almost certainly find a good match here. My favorite part, though, are the drawers. I love digging through for art prints, sheet music, and old this and thats. I recently found a preacher's journal from the 1930s. Score! read more

There was a bookstore in Saratoga, NY that was housed in an old bank. It was wonderful wandering around, even entering the old vault to search through the shelves of old, new and used books. While this store isn't housed in an old bank, it still gave me the same feel. This is a real bookstore, for books that have outlived their previous homes and are now looking for a new nightstand. Now I'll admit, you might not find the specific book you're looking for, but you will find something. And wandering the rows and rows you'll have a good time searching for that find. There's just something about wandering through a true, small-time bookstore like this that simply feels right. It's almost like you can sense the collective history of all those different tomes. Hardbacks have prices listed on the first printed page. Paperbacks are typically 50% off the listed selling price. I hope this is something that doesn't get left by the wayside in this new evermore digital age. Next time you find yourself on 4th Ave. head down towards the underpass and check out an old-school bookstore. You know you still like flipping pages more than staring at a screen when you read. She even said I am more than welcome to bring my ice cream in and find a spot and read and enjoy as long as I desired. This little gem sits near the Shanty on 4th Avenue. It's often open late, which is appealing when I am looking for a restroom. But it also appeals because I love books. And there is a huge amount of them here, and nothing but books. Book Stop used to be on Campbell in a funky location, and also carried record albums I believe. This location is smaller in size but is hardcore for used books. The sections of history, archaeology, and Arizona are amazing packed and well maintained. Prices reasonable. Lots of fiction, sci-fi, children's, military/war, and collectible and rare books await. It is easy to browse and get lost in the books here. It's a comfy environment, the people who work here are not pushy. You can trade in books and receive credit (at least, I did that a year or two ago.. not sure what the policy is now). If you like books and you're on 4th, pop by. They keep late hours on Friday and Saturday so it's a change of pace when you are bar hopping down 4th. Sober up with a good book. One of my very favorite things is the smell of books, especially old books. This place has that amazing smell. I've never gone in there looking for anything specific so I can't say how it is in that aspect, but if you book shop like me-randomly walking around and buying things that strike your fancy-then this is a great place for you. Pretty good used book store. Good idea to come here with not too solid a purchase plan. Couldn't find any Vonnegut, Robbins, or Murakami at all. But a nice browsing experience, and great selection. Prices a touch high. read more

Without a doubt the coolest little used bookstore I've been to. The lady at the counter was extremely helpful and willing to help me search for books till I found one I really wanted. They didn't have the book I had called about but the service made up for the missing novel. read more

I love this place. Their selection is amazing and well priced (other than some of the books in poorer condition). The staff is nice as well. If you want to read at the location they have a few chairs and it is very quiet. Definitely would recommend checking it out. read more

I love this place! There are so many old and rare finds here, it is truly one of the gems of Tucson. The staff is friendly and not overbearing. There's water and some times edible goodies at the front. Anything bad? The concrete floor makes me feel like I've entered Allergy Land, but so what? It's the risk you take for finding old Soviet literature. read more

When this store was on Campbell, we lived in that area. We would walk down and grab ice cream in Baskin-Robbins and then head to the book store, The owners were so kind to my young daughters and my husband and I. The girls always felt welcome and always found another treasure to take home and read. I will visit again, soon! read more

In the 20 years that I have been going to Book Stop, there has never been a time when I have not found the book I was seeking. I moved out of state for a few years, and when I returned I was saddened to see that Book Stop was no longer on Campbell/Grant, yet I was pleased to see that it had relocated to 4th Ave. If you are looking for that elusive book that seems only available online, check here first. Unless you're a bleeding heart who believes in "shopping local" (although you are unable to provide a good reason why one should, and cannot even use proper grammar), there is no reason to shop here. Books are way, way, way overpriced. And I say this as a regular customer at Bookmans, which is also overpriced. The selection is not great. The toilet is dingy and tiny, and does not even have a sign on the door to let customers know it is a toilet. The owner cannot be bothered to say "thank you", even after you have spent close to $200 in the shop. She also does not bother to provide you with a receipt, or let you know the total of your purchase before tax. She looks peeved if you question her maths before paying. All in all, a shop with service as third-rate as the bookshop itself. read more
