This local treasure is one of the best bookstores I've ever been to. Each section of the store has been thoughtfully and exceptionally well established. The question is never IF you'll find something, but how you'll decide between the many options. Because you WILL find what you're seeking and much more. The Bookmark also has one of the BEST curated classics sections anywhere. There are cards and gifts, but these items don't overwhelm the space - as we have seen happen in the bigger chain stores. But what also sets this shop apart is the incredible staff. Owner Christine has created a team of friendly, professional people that make an already great place even better. This place is one of my happy places and I hope you'll give it the chance to be yours too. read more

I was introduced to this bookstore by my friend. She lives nearby. Tonight, she had her book signing event here. I like this place because it's small and cozy. They also sell all the bestsellers. In the back, there is a section for children. The cashier was nice when I purchased the book. She included a bookmark. I recommend dropping by here when you are in the area. read more

Visited with a friend yesterday and looked at some books. My friend was really excited to show me this place because she had been here before. While reading a story aloud, was told "be gentle, someone might want to buy them". We were not greeted nor asked if we needed help. Instead received that comment. Be gentle? We were not being rough, we were turning pages as normal reading the book. Someone might want to buy it? I was looking at the book because maybe I wanted to buy it. Did she think I would be unable to do so? The experience made us feel very icky.. read more

After dining next door at the Blue Door Greek restaurant, I popped in here. Just a really nice selection of puzzles, books and kids books/stuff. I was a little frustrated because none of the puzzles were priced and no one offered to help me. What ever happened to simple "display signage" ? Cute neighborhood book shop in my neighborhood. I usually go to the Barnes and Noble on Court Street but I was in a crunch in obtaining the latest book for my book club. I visited the store yesterday and was told there was a reorder of book coming to the store and the owner was going to call me. Well the owner never did so I returned today and aS told the shipment didn't arrive. The store isn't sure if it had to do with Thanksgiving overload. They did apologize. I understand when things go awry with shipments, however, when a promise is made to a customer to call when book arrived, the call should have been made regardless if book did or didn't. Now that that is out of the way, this is a pleasant shop. It's organized and it looks like there is a crochet club held at the shop. This store does have authors' book signings and readings. I intend to patronize in the future due to my monthly book club meeting. read more

In these challenging times, it's important that we support local small businesses as they're struggling to survive. Especially book stores as they are already dwindling in numbers even during normal times. The Bookmark Shoppe is one of my favorite small businesses in the neighborhood and I've been encouraging friends and neighbors to go support them. While many big box stores are running out of puzzles, they have many in stock and really nice ones too. I was surprise how fast they quickly delivered it to me (less than 24 hours). They also have board games, crafts, and lots of other activities to keep you or the little ones busy. While we're not out there saving lives, we can save our neighborhood gems by supporting them. read more

It's nice to have at least one book store in the neighborhood, but this book store does not have the same feel as most independent book stores. The selection is average with a focus on best sellers. I'm sure they are willing to order anything you wish, but anyone can order a book themselves online so I don't see that as a selling point. They do have cute gifts and hold small events here but nothing about this place makes me want to come back. I only stop by when I am desperate and too lazy to travel or wait for a delivery. I see comments about the great staff, but in the 5-6 times I have been here, no staff member has ever offered assistance or even been pleasant. That could just be a complete coincidence I suppose! The price are average to high. The longer I am in Bay Ridge, the more I understand the lack of demand for literary outlets (no shortage of places to get a spray tan though!). However I would like to see them do well for no other reason than that this is the neighborhood's only option. read more

Wish it was better. There is great potential here but the shoppe seems geared to one type of customer. Yes, the owners are nice. Yes, they will order books for you with quick turn-around time. Yes, the kids' section is large, though not as extensive as it could be. Unfortunately, however, the selection here is stuck in mainstream. With regard to the kids section: Fantasy books, Twilight and Diary of a Wimpy Kid ( or whatever else "readers" like these days) are not the only things kids can enjoy. Kids do like mythologies, TinTin books, American Girl, Great Starts classics non-fiction, etc.. But if I want to find these books at an independent bookstore (instead of Amazon or B&N) , I need to head to Bookcourt. I will not even comment on the selection for adults or the Classics collection which is limited only to HS reading lists. I do not believe it is a function of the neighborhood it sits in as plenty of people in the neighborhood wish for more options. I want to spend more at this local establishment, but they never have what I am looking for and ordering the book is not the same as having a great stimulating selection to browse through. An independent bookstore, to me, is a place where you can browse and find something intriguing you weren't necessarily looking for. This place just isn't it. Not yet. If you like the latest "it" books/series or reality-star tome, though, then this is the "independent" bookstore for you. read more

While visiting Bay Ridge a friend of mine and I decided to step into the Bookmark Shoppe. Having checked out their website we were excited to see what their Indie Author Romance section would look like. We were immediately put off almost immediately by the sign in the window about how Amazon is a corporate tyrant (my words). The Indie Author Romance section was incredibly small. But my friend and I were enjoying the cozy feel of the store and had fun perusing the shelves. My friend came across the arcs section and was looking it over and decided to ask the store clerk a question. The clerk was very abrupt and didn't seem to want to answer any questions about Indie Romance Authors and was quick to tell my friend, in a very condescending tone that arcs are not for sale, which had nothing to do with the original question. My friend and I put down our purchases and quickly left. There a lot of book stores and a little bit of friendliness goes a long way. Not for nothing I can get a book with Amazon without feeling like I am impeding on someone's time. All in all the store is cute and cozy but the customer service leaves something to me desired. read more

This review is for people who enjoy flipping pages instead of sliding their fingers on Kindles. Such a lovely and homey bookstore ! This bookstore has been around for over 10 years because of the quality of service and great finds. Once in the shop you are warmly greeted by the staff . Books are neatly stacked and the store is really tidy!. There is a corner for books $5 and below ( yes 1 buck books !) It is small shop so of course they don't have a selection like B&N but I can tell you they are HAPPY to order any book you need. I have done it several times and they get their shipment in fast ! Bookmark Shoppe is also that cozy store that decorates for each holiday. Upon entering was a whole display of valentine hearts and books on love. To add to this cozy vibe they sell yarn !!! I had no idea that they had a whole wall of yarn and different inch needles. This time I was looking for a journal. The woman who helped me was superb. She went out of her way to find more journals for me . (Journal picking is like finding a new home.) In the end I snagged an awesome deal and journal. It is always nice to give your dollar to a hard working small business. Overall Bookmark Shoppe is a cute bookstore that treats customers like family and makes shopping easy as a-b-c #cornyending 5 stars earned. read more

A nice little local craft and bookshop. It doesn't feel like it's run by literary types - the coverage is patchy and focuses on bestsellers. This probably suits the neighborhood, but it doesn't entice book lovers to browse. Good for children's crafts and little gift knick-knacks. The yarn section is small but the needle section large - go figure. They have more bulky yarn and big needles than shops catering towards experienced knitters. Lion Brand, Cascade, a bit of this and that, some things you'll find at discount Smileys. The knitting classes look fun. read more

Wonderful find in a great neighborhood! I love to support local but that's not why I keep going back! Its a great book store with a great selection of books, if they don't have t they order it for you and get it the next day! THey have a handful of used books priced at $1 so I usually grab a few. WHat amazes me is that its not just a book store, Tons of little gift items and get this THEY KNIT and they carry supplies for knitting - -they offer knitting and crochet classes and have a full line of supplies, and if you don't want to knit or crochet you can custom order the stuff! The Bookmark Shoppe is the only local bookstore in Bay Ridge. Not only that, but they are extremely knowledgeable, great with recommendations, and helpful whether it is with finding a book or ordering one. I follow them on Twitter and place my orders exclusively through that. They are always quick with placing orders, great with recommending books, and offer exclusive discounts. They also have great events like classes and book signings. I love coming here, it is always a happy enviornment and (even when I don't NEED to) I walk out with several purchases! :) I am one happy customer! read more

Went to a booksigning meet the author(Adriana Trigiani) sponsored by the Bookmark Shoppe and held at Capri Club. It was advertised as dinner included. They ran out of food and I and my 3 friendsand I were left with a dinner roll and a spoonful of pasta for dinner. No compensation was offered, not even an apology.They obviously don't know how to manage an event like this. I will never sign up for an event of theirs in the future. read more

This is a really cute local bookstore. I love shopping small in bay ridge! They also have a lot of local activities like book signings and knitting workshops and they sell yarn and knitting supplies in the store. I like to go here when I'm in the neighborhood and buy whatever tickles my fancy. Staff is very friendly! I have, however, deducted one star because they can be slow to restock. They were stocked up again this time but the last 2-3 times I went the classics section was totally ransacked and lacking even the most basic classic novels. I am very pleased that there is a bookstore in this neighborhood. Thank goodness for that! But what I was not impressed with was: 1. Neither my sister nor I, who were in the store for 20+ minutes, were asked at any point in time if we needed assistance 2. The selection was weak 3. Many of the areas were absolutely disorganized 4. I have used this store for special orders since it opened. Recently I called the store to order the new decorating book on Dior, which they received in two days. If it were not for this store this beautiful book would have been something I wanted, but never got. I did not have to go all the way to Barnes and Noble on Court Street to request the book, and then have to take an hour bus ride, and walk two long city blocks to pick up the book, and of course make the long trip home. . They are an old fashion bookstore , and they get the best authors for signings, and also do local events for their authors (I am going to the event at CEBU's for the Grace Kelly books which includes a copy of both books..) I cannot stand for a long time so when Tony Bennett came for the second time to do a signing. I ordered and paid for my book , and they made sure he signed the book. They also have knitting classes, and Taylor Swifts line of cards, a large children's section, and chocolate to buy at the counter. read more

This bookstore is run by two of the most friendly women eager to help customers find exactly what they're looking for. I usually go in to the store looking for nothing in particular and end up asking them what they recommend. They take the time to ask about favorite reads and interests before looking through books with customers to make the right choice. I can usually look up a book review for myself on the internet, but there is something much more personal about speaking to someone face to face. I feel that they have read and handpicked almost every book in their store and strive their best to match you with the perfect fit. Going to a bookstore like this beats the impersonal and overwhelming experience you get at a chain like barnes and noble any day. read more

In a time where bookstores are becoming a thing of the past, Bookmark has created a space worthy of frequenting. Having made my visit to the area based primarily on the presence of this bookstore, it was worthy. I found a book I don't think I would've ever stumbled across in a larger venue. With an eclectic selection of popular and indie authors along with yarn for knitting opportunities, this is my kind of place. Bina makes you feel like you've been neighbors forever and went out of her way to make me, the visitor from uptown Manhattan, feel welcome with local gems to explore. With some attention to maximizing space for a maybe a wider selection and a comfy chair or 2 more (or maybe not so there could be more books!), I would no doubt give it all stars. read more
