The Boxty House was a Yelp recommendation for us so before we left the states I made a reservation for the day we were in Dublin, Ireland seeing the Book of Kells. After being seated we ordered the Irish stew and soda bread and the corned beef and cabbage to share. The service was prompt and helpful however it could have been a bit more friendly. Both meals were very good, although the honey really enjoyed the stew and I much preferred the corned beef. We went with a Chicken Boxty that had a fabulous sauce, think of chicken gravy with green onions and leeks over a Boxty that's filled with grilled chicken tenderloins. Boxty House wasn't on my to try list, but the crowds after the parade made me end up here due to large lines at the other restaurants I wanted to try. There was about a 15 minute wait, which wasn't bad. We were set at a high top table with stools. The waiter approached the table promptly and took our drink orders. I ordered a vodka drink. I came here for my last dinner while visiting Ireland and was not disappointed! I am a pescatarian with a gluten allergy which I mentioned to the host and she assured me I'd be safe here. My friend and I started with the Seasoned Fries which were probably some of the best fries I've ever had. We were seated in the basement level which had more tables. As it was my first visit in Dublin, I wanted to try Guinness. Surprisingly, when I ordered, the waiter mentioned they don't have any lol! So I opted for the Tayto Swift (pun for Taylor Swift, not sure if this is named after Ireland's famous potato chip Tayto). This was a mix of dingle gin and martini and it was really tasty. We had to experience authentic Irish cuisine so we went to Gallagher's Boxty House in Dublin. A Boxty is a must-try when in Ireland. It's a traditional potato pancake that can be stuffed with a variety of ingredients and served with different sauces. We had the salmon Boxty. Amazing! I could get used to this. We ended up trying the Beer and Boxty special since we were there between 3-5PM. It was 21 euros for a meal and a drink. For a touristy part of town, I didn't think that was a bad price. The Gaelic Boxty is where it's at. You have to pay a higher premium price for it, but I liked it more than my husband dish which was the corned beef dumplings. Ya gotta have potatoes when you're in Ireland and The Boxty House is the place to get your boxty on, a potato pancake that's filling, hearty and satisfying. It's a solid place for an Irish meal, but I loved my experience here better than the food. I visited The Boxty House on a Friday night and the place was packed. There was a line outside the door and after figuring out who's already put their name in, I was told that it would be about 15 minutes for a table to open up. I ended up being seated about half an hour later, which didn't bother me since I wasn't in any rush. But yes, The Boxty House is super popular and touristy, but it serves better than average touristy food. Also, it has been discovered by Phil Rosenthal, so word has gotten out. I ordered the sampler platter, which had a little bit of all the favorites and tried the beer sampler, which they brew in house. The beer was fantastic. Even for this gal who loves IPAs, the stout was by far the best one and will give Guinness a run for its money. For anyone who likes craft beer, try it here. And the platter I ordered was humungous. There was no way I was going to tackle this on my own, but I surely did. Of the platter, I loved the lamb stew the most. It was the best lamb stew I've ever had, with tender pieces of lamb and vegetables in a thick yet slurp-able broth that was warm comforting. You have to get this! Surprisingly, I thought all the potato concoctions came second to the stew. Everyone raves about the fries here, but they were my least favorite as they were way too greasy and fried. Just crunchy batter. The potato dumplings that came with the corned beef was my second favorite item, and you'll want to eat this with the hot mustard that they serve on the side with. Delicious corned beef with perfectly cooked potato dumplings. The boxty/potato pancake with the steak was A-OK. Steak was slightly overcooked. And the potato toast with the carrot puree was fine, but nothing special. All in all, this platter was a great way to try the different items offered at The Boxty House. The staff could not be friendlier. In particular, my server was hilarious and so friendly. He found out I'm from the Seattle area and mentioned his regrets of leaving Kirkland where his wife and he used to live since the house value has doubled. It was fun to meet another Washingtonian even if he moved back to his home country of Ireland! He also made recommendations for other spots to visit around Dublin. The spice fries are some of the best fries I have ever had in my life. I love crunchy fries like this that are very crispy. If you don't like crispy maybe not your thing. Super buttery, rich and creamy and although it's mashed potatoes with veggies spinach and kale, the veggies were perfectly cooked. Service was amazing. A well known tourist stop that still holds on to their authentic character and charm regardless of the tourist crowds that may be coming through. My partner had the lamb stew and raved about it, even though he doesn't usually like lamb. I had the full Irish breakfast and liked mixing and matching the different flavors of my plate with my boxty pancake. One extra star for the classy and generous way the staff dealt with the complaining tourist next to us. The staff was gracious and accommodating with their response when they didn't have to be. We ordered the Full Irish Breakfast (€15) and Traditional Irish Lamb Stew (€15). The food was presented beautifully though. I mean, the sunny side egg was so glossy that it almost looked fake. We both didn't care too much for the Irish breakfast, but the stew was good. Maybe we ordered the wrong items, but nothing really stood out. The spice box was basically fried chicken tenders on a bed on onions, on top of a flat dry pancake known as a boxty, covered in a thick curry sauce.
