Temple Bar is the epicenter of the Dublin Tourist Zones. Lines with Souvenir Shops and the ubiquitous irish breakfast for penny's on the dollar.(okay maybe euro here). Gallaghers Boxty House is a nice respite from this chaos. It keeps its original charm probably stretching back a hundred years but they pipe in kinda 70-80 rock. This juxtaposed ambiance works. Doesn't try to be hip but kind of is. Debbie served us and did so with irish charm I hold back a star as we had breakfast there and it's really not a breakfast place in my book. My advice is stay away from the "full irish breakfast"here and everywhere as there is nothing special about it. Embrace the Boxty and look at the lunch menu. read more

Sadly, this entire meal was a fail for me. We ordered the chicken boxty with the sauce on the side. The boxty itself was very tough and dense. The chicken was so overcooked and very tough and dry. The sauce was tasty, however, it could not cover up the terrible chicken. I'm not sure how they cook the chicken( boil?). but it was so unattractive. No color on the chicken what so ever. Wonderful Boxty. They have many variations of the dish based on which protein you get which is super interesting. A little on the price side but that's to be expected for temple bar area. The beer from their affiliate brewery was well worth getting a flight. Service was friendly and accommodating. If you are ever in Ireland you can't leave without trying the Irish Boxty Potato Pancakes and the best place to have them is right here at Gallagher's. It's almost like tradition. Featured on an episode of "somebody feed Phil" is where I first heard of Boxty and is what brought me here (twice). The menu features a lot of variety.. boxty pancakes, boxty dumplings, boxty fries ... so many choices that I felt I wouldn't be doing justice by picking one, so I ordered the sharing plate coz that was the best way to taste a variety of the humble spud, including the traditional boxty pancake(that I added to my order). I was delighted with everything I ate... never tasted potatoes cooked this way before. It has a bit of a chew to it which is what gives it its uniqueness. All that food called for a drink, surprisingly the menu is devoid of Guinness... that's coz they have their own brew Jack Smyth (named after the son) so good!! We just arrived to Dublin today and this was recommended. We had to make reservations for 8 pm even though we didn't know what we wanted. Be warned the restaurant is small and a little cramped. Like most places it doesn't have AC and they can't open windows. So dress light! My daughter is vegetarian and I didn't have a big appetite. Our waiter was RUDE (foreign man with glasses). They were busy but we felt rushed and you're only given 90 minute reservations. When we said we just wanted the Boxty fries (to start with) and water, he berated me with "you made reservations for fries?" As if we were wasting his time. We almost walked out but to make a reservation you give a CC and they automatically charge you you 10€. When he came back we decided to get the cheese plate and a cocktail as well. But I was so taken aback, it's so hot & stuffy and overpriced, that my stomach didn't want any of it. We munched a little, threw back the drink and asked for our check to leave. We stumbled across this place and ended up finding 2 seats at the bar. They do take reservations so keep that in mind. We had to look up what a boxty actually was, which is like a potato pancake, but it sounded right up our alley. We we ordered the lamb boxty which was almost like in a boxty taco, and the fish and chips. The lamb was super flavorful and we loved the boxty taco pancake apparatus. Great food, amazing staff, live atmosphere. I tried out Boxty for breakfast, and it did not disappoint. I enjoyed a traditional Irish breakfast that featured two over medium eggs, bacon, Irish sausage, black pudding, mushrooms, tomato, and a boxty crisp (basically hashbrowns). I thoroughly enjoyed the combination. I was surprised to see black pudding on the menu and even more curious to try it to see if it tastes similar to the black pudding in my country. It definitely tastes the same, except we make ours more spicy. I also enjoyed Baileys coffee and the bread pudding. It's so amazing to experience how our foods, cultures, and traditions are all linked. It makes you realize and appreciate how similar we are to people all over the world. It truly made me embrace my experience in Ireland. The restaurant is big and it gets very busy. You can tell it's a local favorite. We didn't have to wait long for a table. In researching Dublin, we stumbled across a couple of YouTubers who absolutely RAVED about the stew platter at the Boxty House. We put it on our itinerary and arrived when they opened. They weren't quite serving the standard menu yet due to the time of day, which meant no stew platter, however, our server was amazing and asked the chef if we could do the platter, and he said yes. Needless to say, we were super happy about this. The stews arrived, and in the pictures, they may not look like much, but they were hearty, filling, and delicious. Between the two of us, we finished all three cups, with the bread and a beer, and we were full. Our favorite of the three was the Beef and Stout. The Lamb was delicious as well, and very tender. The Coddle I really enjoyed. Morgan found it a little too salty for his taste, but I thought it was perfect. When we find ourselves in Dublin again, we definitely plan to visit the Boxty house again, this time to try a boxty, and to have some more of the amazing stews! Highly recommend! read more

Recommend for Authentic Irish food. First time eating a Boxty and it was delicious! We have the chicken and Gaelic one and everyone liked them. The fish and chips were great too. Also had a red ale and Irish coffee - both excellent! Boxty portions aren't huge but in some ways that's better so you can have dessert. Not cheap but in line with surrounding area. Nice ambiance but ultimately overpriced and the main attraction is the novelty of the food -- what's a boxty? We got their tasting platter, a meagre amount of food for the hefty price of 26 euro. The "boxty fries" were literally just fries. Nothing was particularly good or even traditional, there's way better Irish food around every corner if that's what you're looking for. Found this little spot when we were wandering around temple bar area. It's a cute little spot, very cozy and not super loud. They did have a lot of options to try on the menu which was nice. We ordered the flora Dora and a whiskey sour to drink. Highly recommend the flora Dora, it was light and refreshing but super good flavor! The food was ok. We ordered the boxty sampler which I honestly thought was going to be something different than what it was. It was mainly French fries, bruschetta and gnocchi. I thought that we would get an actual boxty pancake so that was a little disappointing. The fries were ok, the bruschetta needed some salt , but the gnocchi was delish! The sauce was great, the actual gnocchi wasn't amazing. We also got the seafood chowder which was alright. Still needed a little salt for flavor but overall it did have a lot of seafood. It's best if you make reservations beforehand, But I went to check if I can get seats by walking- in and they tell you when to claim your table. It was served with this blue cheese that didn't taste like blue cheese. The texture was different. But overall was delicious. Just knowing it is free range was good. For the main, I got the Gallaghers Lamb Stew- the meat was tender and I liked the selection of bread + mash potatoes. Last but not least was the dessert which was called the boxy bread ice cream. It literally had bread crumbs in the ice cream. Even though the ice cream didn't look like anything spectacular, it sure was. The caramel flavor went well with the sauce. After watching the show "Somebody Feed Phil" on Netflix, we knew we had to add The Boxty House to our list when we visited Dublin. Immediately we knew we came to the right place as it was super duper busy even on a weekday afternoon! We were served right away despite the rush, which was great! However, here comes the downfall... we were given quite a long time with the menu to study even though we already knew what we wanted to order before walking in (there were menus posted on the window... duh). We understood the whole "we are busy so first come first served", but that was not the case. We were being served AFTER another table that came in AFTER us, which made us feel left out. But we ended up ordering the Corned Beef Boxty and Lamb Irish Stew from the Brunch menu, as well as half a pint of the house stout. When we finished placing the order, the waiter sounded like he was pestering us to order the fish n chips, he repeated "and fish n chips?" a few times already... WE DON'T WANT FISH N CHIPS! So we kept saying no we're okay, and then he had this look as if he didn't like what he heard. If we want fish n chips, we knew where to go for that, we were here for BOXTY! When our food finally arrived, we couldn't help but notice how little the portion was. The boxty was half of what my friend told me when she went to Ireland a month before me (same price, same menu)... Hers was filled to the brim, whereas ours seemed they couldn't care less and just scooped 1 scoop and spread it out on the dish to make it look "a lot". Now, the Irish stew was filled with chunky bits of lamb and filled to the brim. Both tasted delicious, boxty was chewy and crispy on the outside, but pillowy on the inside... I could eat the whole thing myself if they weren't stingy on the portion. The stew was so flavourful, rich in umami and spices yet the lamb was still present. Overall experience wasn't as welcoming. The waiter's attitude gave out an "I don't want to serve you guys but I have to" vibe despite us being nice to him. The old fashioned is the best I've ever had and I fancy myself an old fashioned connoisseur! The chocolate bitters...what an idea!!
