If you've never tried a boxty and are in the Temple Bar area, you need to go here! Be sure to make a reservation though. We didn't and had a 45 minute wait at 8 pm on a Sunday night. The Gaelic boxty was delicious. It had a nice amount of beef inside with a tasty mushroom cream sauce. I wasn't too thrilled with the side salad, but I wasn't here for greens. We shared the bailey cheesecake for dessert and could barely finish it. It was very rich, but also delicious. For the amount of food you get, the price is reasonable. Bring your appetite! read more

I came to this place because of the Yelp rating and others' reviews. I didn't really know what I was getting into or what a "boxty" was. I didn't have reservations, the place was packed and I had to wait for 15 minutes but they were real nice and attentive even while I was waiting they were giving me updates. Once I was seated the waiter came over and suggested a great local beer which was delicious. He also explained what a boxty was (potato pancake stuffed with various things of your choice - beef, chicken, other). I wasn't planning on it but the reviews on Yelp sold me. I ordered the Gaelic Boxty (beef and mushroom). It was AMAZING. Flavorful mushroom sauce and tender beef (I asked for it to be cooked medium but I don't think it matters much). I LOVED it. Then I had the chocolate cake with caramel sauce vanilla ice cream and toffee crumbles. Again...AMAZING. I can't say enough about this place. If I wanted to be picky I'd say the service was a little slow between the entree completion and dessert question. That said the food was too good and the experience too good to knock it from a 5. Simple traditional dishes done extremely well with nuances that kept the integrity of the dish. The fish was fresh and caught the day. The mushy peas were made from fresh peas... Hands down, this is the best place I ate at in Ireland. There was a line to get in when we arrived - don't let this line deter you. The food is definitely worth it! It's also a great location - if you want to hit up a candy shop or a bar afterwards, everything is in walking distance. I had never heard of a Boxty before - but I guess the best way to describe it is an Irish burrito or crêpe. Meat/veggies/sauce, wrapped up in a savory potato pancake. I got the boxty with a creamy sauce and chicken - and my husband got the Gaelic boxty (steak and mushroom). This is the definition of comfort food. Seriously, nothing, -nothing- beats a boxty on a cold day. Now that its finally getting colder in Texas, I find myself wishing to be back at this restaurant - cheerful, bright, and satisfying - the perfect winter solution to cold Irish nights. What I wanted was some wholesome Irish goodness done in a contemporary way. I don't think you could find a finer restaurant that encapsulates this and that's it's right in the centre of Temple Bar was extremely surprising. The restaurant is not large and fill two shops fronts. It has a cosy modern kitchen feel all done in raw wood with muted grey tones. We went along quite early on Wednesday night and the place was already reasonably full. But the waitress offered us seats at the bar which was absolutely fine by us. The menu is not extensive which is also great to see, they focus on stews and as the name suggests Irish boxty which is a kind of potato pancake. I went for the Gaelic Boxty made with medallions of Irish beef with a whisky and mushroom cream sauce. The whole thing was beautifully made. The beef medallions were spot on medium rare that I requested and the sauce made the lovely and rich but not too heavy, great for an Autumn evening. My wife had the stew trio of Guinness and Beef, Irish and Dublin Coddle served with soda bread. Again everything was tasty and filling. My wife found the Dublin Coddle a little too salty for her because of the use of pork sausages and bacon, but it was right up my alley. Delicious Irish Food in Dublin! During our visit to Dublin, we were walking around the Temple Bar area on a Sunday night and needed to find a place for dinner. We wanted to experience traditional Irish food and stumbled upon Boxty House based on good yelp reviews. Me and my boyfriend went into this restaurant without a reservation and were seated right away downstairs. The theme of the food is "Boxty", which we were both unfamiliar with. After a couple of google searches, we realized Boxty is a potato pancake and were excited because we like anything potatoes. We both ordered off the 2 course menu for €19.99 which was a great value we thought. We both ordered the Seafood Chowder as a starter, which was creamy, full of flavor and just so delicious. Some of the best chowder I've ever had with generous portions of seafood, including huge chunks of perfectly cooked salmon and clam. It definitely hit the spot and was extremely fresh. For our mains - I had the Guinness Beef Stew with carrots and potatoes, and my boyfriend had the Bangers and Mash - both were phenomenal. The sausages were so juicy, bursting with flavor - it was perfectly cooked. With the combination of mashed potatoes and a perfect pint of beer, this was definitely a memorable meal. The portions were huge, served warm, and just great. The choice of food was superb, atmosphere was cozy and rustic, and the level of service was great! Our waiter was provided some of the best service - he was extremely friendly, helpful, and provided helpful tips for things to do in Dublin. I'm not sure if Irish cuisine is an acquired taste or we simply ordered the wrong things but I wasn't loving the food I ordered. We ordered off the early dinner menu. 12-7 pm, £20 for an starter and a main course. Soup of the day & the salad tasted fresh. I ordered the Irish chicken in boxty pancake and my friend ordered the roasted cauliflower with boxty dumplings. I'm not really sure how to explain this but the feeling you get is that it barely passes as good yummy food. I think it's because it's doesn't have a lot of taste to it. Also the price is overhyped by the tourists. Minus points. I did overhear that the beef stew is pretty amazing so maybe people should go for that instead of the boxty. read more

Delicious!! Googled "traditional irish food", boxties came up, yelped this place, and at 4 stars it did not disappoint. Husband got the lamb trio and I got a seafood sort of dish, forgot what it's called, but it's more like a chowder or super saucy dish than the pancake type boxties. I believe they serve their potatoes in 3 or so forms. In my husbands lamb trio, (24€) my favorite was that hunk of lamb. So flavorful, tender, juicy, just fantastic. The boxty was of course also good. I feel like the boxty is an Irish taco of sorts and it was flavorful and delicious to eat. The shepherds pie that it came with was alright, not as delicious as the first two so if you're like me and like to save the best for last, eat the shepherds pie first! The salmon and mussel dish (~16€?) I got was also good. The little nuggets of potato had a great texture and flavor. My husband loved the salmon, great salmon flavor and texture. It wasn't dry at all. I, on the other hand, haven't really liked the salmon here because it's a bit heavy for me. If you prefer lighter foods, I might leave this one out. My husband ended up eating most of the salmon pieces, but I loved the rest of it! With our meal, we drank murphys, which is like a lighter guinness. If you aren't irish, I'd definitely suggest trying this place especially if boxties really are a traditional food. They're good! read more

Stopped in last night since the place next door was an hour wait. Must have arrived at the perfect time as we were seated right away downstairs. That's when the fun started! Michael, our server, was attentive and entertaining and even brought some beer samples for me to try since that's not normally my thing. One friend ordered the stew sampler. It was three coffee mugs full of stew with a side of bread. Very hearty! All delicious. I ordered the spinach and blue cheese boxty which was delicious as well. Prepared sort of like a gnocchi but with a little bit of tart blue cheese taste. You should def try it!! Lastly, another friend ordered the salmon with vegetable risotto and beets. All were cooked perfectly with a lovely red pepper sauce to top it off! I normally would stay away from anything on a main tourist drag, but I cannot say enough good things about this place. Locals would cringe at the thought of eating shepherd's pie from a dainty porcelain dish. I get it. It's not the Irish pub version. It's the cafe version. This is the "fresh flowers on a butcher's block table" version. You might even raise your pinky while sipping your Irish coffee in the process. Smack bang in the middle of temple bar, serving up the heartiest Irish grub you can find, the had a winning combination from Day 1! On arrival, the place was really busy and when looking to join our group, the host seemed a little confused and had us wait whilst she found our group... It was a little abrupt with stand back, wait there. After a minute or two, we were able to tell her our group was downstairs and she let us go past. We had been running late, from the others in our group... I understand the host was a little off with then as they arrived. ... Moving on, we were all finally seated and the menu came out quickly and despite how busy the restaurant was, the waitress was back to us within a few minutes and took our order. All the menu sounded so appetising, I opted for the Gaelic Boxty which was beef medallions wrapped in boxty serviced with chips. It was really nice, it did come with quite a lot of sauce which made it all a little soggy but the flavours were all there and I really enjoyed the food. If you a looking for a quiet intimate dinner, this place would disappoint however if you're looking for a busy go about itself restaurant, some quality Irish meals on offer then it's a great bet. It's not quite my cup of tea however I think when I have visitors from abroad, I'll definitely be happy to recommend and bring them here. read more

Because it is located in Temple Bar, it is often filled to the brim with tourists and can make it difficult to get in for a meal. They also don't take reservations, so even more difficult! However, I went for lunch and was seated right away! I was really hungry... lots of travelling, no breakfast, so I opted for the 3 Course Lunch for €25.50 because just about everything on the menu is an option! I started with the Leek and Potato soup... very nice and the soda bread was very good. I then had the Corned Beef and Cabbage Boxty. This is a big portion of food, so bring your appetite! It was absolutely fantastic! It was everything I expected and more! The corned beef was tender, and big chunks all throughout the boxty! The cabbage was lovely and the parsley sauce was so creamy and rich. The boxty itself was fluffy, light, and went well with the beef and the rich sauce. There was a pile of salad on the side, no dressing, in my opinion it was kind of a waste. While my waiter was very friendly, he was so busy that at one point, I thought he had forgotten I was even there. I considered skipping dessert because it was taking so long to get served, but I couldn't pass up Bread and Butter Pudding. The dessert was really good, but the custard was very runny and they serve it on a plate that doesn't have much of a lip, so pouring it all over was not really an option, so I dipped pieces into the custard. The amount of food is amazing and the quality is wonderful, but the service is a bit inefficient. Go for lunch, otherwise you'll have trouble getting in at dinner time, and make sure that you aren't in a rush... in fact this might be a good place to sit and just linger over your lunch. read more
