Loved it! I went in because it was one of the few places that met my 2 qualifications: vegetarian options & no one standing outside trying to persuade us to enter. In spite of there being no one outside yelling on the crowded streets, the reataurant was full. I assumed that was because it was surviving on a decent reputation and happily waited to be seated (only 10-15 minutes). The inside is cozy and cute, and our server was pretty nice. They had several vegetarian options I was really interested in, including a pair salad and boxty dumplings, but on our waiter's recommendation I got the boxty pancake filled with veggie chilli and topped with sour cream. It was very good & very hearty! They use Quorn meat in it. My husband, who had really been wanting to try some Irish stew, got the sampler trio for himself. He really enjoyed them all. One was "just like my mom's." I actually wanted to got back the next day, but we decided to spread it around. We walked in and stood at the door at the "please wait to be seated" sign for 5 minutes and not one person walked out of the kitchen to see us (we could see the cooks working, but it is not their job to seat us). My friend had the stew platter - I recommend it since it gives you a taste of everything- three stews in different mugs with carrot and Irish soda bread on the side. One of those places you think twice about going into because of its high tourist zone location, but well worth the visit if you can handle the crowds. This restaurant seems quite small, but rest assured - there is a downstairs section so even if it looks full the staff will probably be able to accommodate you in a wee corner somewhere. The boxty is the glorified dish here - for those not in the know a boxty is a pancake type dish, served with meat and veges inside and bathed in sauces. Very filling and very good. My friends had the seafood and vegetarian options and both raved about their meals. Of course I had to go and order something non-boxty in a boxty restaurant... I opted for the baked salmon with roast vegetables - in a word - divine! If you are away from home or simply want to have a Sunday roast-type mum-cooked feel to your meal, then this is the one to go for. The prices are Temple Bar infused, so the value for money thing goes out the window a little but, but at around 15 euro for a main we considered our meals pretty decent. Certainly filling! Went there for lunch with a group of friends who were visiting Dublin and Ireland for the first time. Their lunch specials are very good value and the food was great. Two of us ordered the apple and basil crumble for dessert, it was delicious! The decor is simple and the place is warm and cosy (especially after a very rainy morning like the one we had that day!). The small fireplace was lit. Everybody was very happy with their meals and with the whole experience. As a local, general rule of thumb is to never trespass through the gates of Temple bar unless you are chaperoning your American cousins or looking for a jig to end your night! However I highly recommend fleet footing your way to Boxty House. Located in the heart of Temple bar- it is a tourist haunt which offers traditional Irish food all be it with a slight gourmet twist. The service was excellent and the atmosphere was great- it honestly felt like I was sitting in my Granny's kitchen as she prepared a Sunday roast. I had the Potato and Leek soup to start and the Corn Beef for mains- both excellent. The other people in my party also ordered oysters which went down extremely well. This place was so amazing we came back a second time while on holiday! The winning dish was the corned beef that came with boxty dumplings. The dumplings were just to die for! The Gaelic boxty was also quite tasty. Come before 6:30 for dinner and you'll have a two course meal for 20 Euro. It's worth the visit. read more

A group of us visited the Boxty House in Dublin. My wife and I had chowder and I also had fresh fish. They were delicious. My wife thought the chowder was some of the best she had had and I thought it was almost as good as another one. The fish was cooked perfectly and just fell off the fork. The reason the rating is so poor is the waiter was snarly [unlike everyone else we had met in Ireland]. He didn't even bring water without asking. But the biggest problem was with our group at another table where he pocketed the money laid out on the table for the bill as he had directed and then told them they were short by a lot. This was even though one of the group had made sure it was all there. Just because of this slight of hand I would not go there again. read more

I had gotten a recommendation for this place and so we made a reservation online through the restaurant's website. They sat us pretty much right away and the decor inside the restaurant is really fun. It's got a trendy, hipster vibe that isn't over the top. Their Irish coffee was good, as they all are. They also served an alcoholic, bottled ginger beer that was delicious! I ordered the seafood chowder, which was good but not the best I've had. The bread it came with was inedible. I then ordered potato dumplings, but I didn't realize they would come completely flooded with cream sauce. It was too much and I think I probably just mis-ordered. I got the Bailey's cheesecake for desert and that was extremely good. Seemed like their most popular desert on the menu. Overall, it's a good place to eat. I think I just made the wrong choices. I highly recommend the beef stew, but they were all delicious for different reasons. The potato pancakes were also great and came with the most awesome cheese sauce I've had in a while. I also saved some and dipped them into my stews (which come with bread so don't feel like you need to get the pancakes). I finished it off with a bailey's coffee and was not disappointed. Being from Mayo, one of the traditional homes of Boxty I was eager to dine here. Sad to say a bit disappointed. The restaurant was just starting dinner service and so the dining room was not too full when we first arrived. The restaurant was clean, and so were the bathrooms. There is a changing station in the handicap bathroom, and that was clean as well. The service was fantastic. They do have high chairs (also clean!) available. We really enjoyed the Jack Smyth beer flight, and the cider they had on draft. The boxty was interesting (one of the classic Irish dishes we hadn't tried at this point) and hearty. We drove into Dublin from the west country and made the mistake of thinking we'd grab a bite on the road. Dumb Americans! So, when we got into town in the late afternoon we were starving. After a quick check on Yelp, we settled on The Boxty House in Temple Bar. It was the perfect place to start our Dublin trip! Mike was charming, friendlty, and took the best care of us. Took our order and got us served quickly with a lovely bottle of red and a plate of Boxty fries--the garlic aioli is amazing, while we waited for our entrees. If you've never heard of boxty before--like us, it's basically using potatoes in delicious ways! We had the Gaelic Boxty--beef filet with pancake-style boxty with a luscious creamy whiskey mushroom sauce, and a Dublin Bay Prawns with dumpling boxty. Everything was absolutely tremendous. The filet was butter-tender and perfectly cooked, and the lemon honey cream sauce was the perfect accompaniment for the prawns. The Boxty House is casual and comfortable, with a great view onto Temple Bar. They have an upstairs and downstairs and were also hosting a group of 24 the evening we were there so it's a great place to go for large or small groups. For great food, a warm and welcoming atmosphere--with lots of fun, definitely put The Boxty House on your list! read more

Visiting Dublin for business and saw The Boxty House came with high remarks. Inside is small for what I could tell (I sat at the bar), but so charming. I had a server serve me vs. typical bartender, and despite initial small wait time for drinks, food came out so quick! I had the right amount of service and the food was good! I love smoked salmon, and a boxty is apparently an Irish thing so I tried the smoked salmon with boxty dumplings (how perfect). The smoked salmon was tender/good smoky/salty flavor, mushrooms and sauce were bomb. It was filling but I didn't quite feel like my socks were knocked off. I had the Tomas Collins and it was the most pink whiskey drink I've ever had; also did not taste like whiskey at all and raspberries made it sweet, but scrumptious for all the people out there who like not tasting their alcohol. First off, I just want to mention the fact that the outside has been renovated and is no longer the green that you see on the cover photo on yelp. It's a plain white background with a minimalist look that says "Boxty." We had to ask some locals for Gallagher's to no avail, but once we mentioned Boxty, they knew where to go. The first thing I really want to talk about is the service. Martin was an amazing server that just elevated our dining experience. We had a nice chat about microbrews and Irish cuisine, something that added onto our experience in Dublin. He even let us try a beer before we made our choice (I ended up going with the Galway Hooker Ale which I recommend). The food that we ordered definitely hit the spot in terms of portion and taste. My mom ordered the ribs from the appetizer section and it was HUGE. It could easily fill you up. My dad and I got the Gaelic and the chicken and bacon Boxty, both were delicious. The potato pancake that the meat is wrapped in is amazing! Also, don't forget to eat the spring greens that are paired with it since the bitterness pairs great with the sauce. Of the two, I recommend the Gaelic Boxty. As for dessert, we went with the bread pudding. This was a pretty satisfying dessert, although a little small for €6. All and all, the long adventure to find the restaurant and the semi-pricey meal left me a star short of 5 stars. Expect €15-20+ for an entree and €5ish for a beer. Definitely with a visit. read more
