A bartender at another location informed us that the Boxty House is "too touristy", but we thoroughly enjoyed it. The ambiance is casual and welcoming. The service was extremely friendly. The beer selection was good. The boxtys were good, but a bit overpriced. (€15-20 each). I had the corned beef and cabbage filling, which was delicious, and my husband had the filet medallions, which was just ok. The beef chunks were too big, and seemed too tough to be filet. It's definitely a touristy spot but, given its primo location right in the middle of Temple Bar, that is to be expected. That being said, tourists aren't always wrong! The Boxty House is actually a solid choice for dinner in the area. It's casual hearty fare, but made with good ingredients and a huge step above pub food, so it's a good compromise if you have a group with mixed palates. A few craft beers and a decent wine list also helps lift the standard above usual pub grub. As the name suggests, their specialty is the boxty - a potato pancake served with a variety of fillings. The Gaelic boxty (€19.90) with beef medallions and whisky cream sauce was excellent, and the boxty is perfect for soaking up all the delicious gravy. We also ordered a small order of bacon ribs to start, which were MASSIVE. That alone with a side of cabbage would have done me for dinner, personally. In general, most of the portions (with the one exception being the pork belly starter) were very generous. If you're not into the boxty, they also have stews, fish & chips, burgers... surely something for everyone. It's almost always busy in the evenings, so make sure you make a reservation! We are native Californians that visited Dublin for the first time. Our expat friend and her partner suggested that we meet there since I wanted to try traditional Irish food. They had not been to the restaurant before either, and chose it based on a recommendation from a "foodie" friend. The staff was very kind and accomodating to our 7-month old daughter. They made space for a high chair, and even stored our foldable stroller away from our table. I ordered the corned beef boxty, which I thought was good, although the meat was more dry than the corned beef that I'm used to at home. Quite possibly the worst meal I have ever paid for. I was suckered into going here because of a relative that was "dying to try a boxty in Dublin." What is this place? A damnable tourist trap. Horrid. It tastes like Dinty Moore (aka canned stew that tastes like the ass end of a rhino). On top of that, it is very expensive. I love this place. I know this is a tourist trap yada yada, but when you are in town and craving an awesome fry this is the place for me. I came here mostly because of my new discovery of the 'Boxty'. I was visiting the in-laws and for one of the frys my sister-in-law busted out the boxty. I have never such yummy pancake in my life! How is that I have married an Irish man for 10 years and he never introduce me to this delicious Irish food item is beyond me. I digress! The service was great and the setting was cozy. We were seated with another couple, but not close enough to interfere with either of our individual meals or conversations. My wife tried the Cottage Pie and very much enjoyed it. I couldn't make up my mind between the stews, so I settled on the sampler of the beef, lamb, and sausage. They were all wonderful. Despite living in Dublin for the guts of five years I had never heard of boxty (from the north west of Ireland) until today and for someone who doesn't see the greatness of the potato I was impressed. We just had small portions, but the pancakes with blue cheese sauce were huge and delicious and the desserts were great. To wash it all down they have Hollows Ginger Beer, which was a great surprise! I recently has the barley risotto with salmon, it was great and again well priced for a fish dish in the centre of town. I ate dinner here my first night in Ireland. After being stuck on an airplane for over 12 hours, I was exhausted and starving! We checked into our B&B and then wandered into Temple Bar to find a place to eat. I love Boxtys so when I spotted this place I suggested it for dinner. As soon as we walked in we were greeted by extremely friendly staff. The place was packed and it looked like we should have had a reservation to eat there. I mentioned how we just arrived in Ireland so we didn't know, they were sympathetic and took care of us and made a small table we could eat at. I was so grateful for that! The food was delicious and I washed it down with a ginger beer (mmmm). Warm and friendly atmosphere, tucked in the Temple Bar, it was a great place to get a hot, delicious meal in a more quiet atmosphere than you would expect for that area of town. So, this place doesn't have that many hot reviews. I have no clue why. Maybe it's because of the exchange rate. Or maybe people don't like potatoes (not me, I adore them). We went on a Sunday night around 8 and the place was packed, but we were seated within 5 minutes. It's communal seating only, and we sat down beside two other tourist couples. I got a two course menu, which consisted of the tomato basil bisque and traditional Irish corned beef and cabbage. Now, this is the stuff to write home about. It was delicious, probably my favorite meal in all of Ireland. They serve their corned beef with a cream based parsley sauce, and of course my beloved potatoes. All this for only 15p! That's what I call value. My boyfriend was extremely jealous of my to-die-for corned beef, and we both kept taking bites of it way after we were full, and didn't stop until we had almost licked the plate. I booked a reservation at this restaurant without knowing much about Dubiin outside of my Yelp based research and without knowing what a Boxty was (hopefully some sort of delicious stew..). A mixed boxty starter cleared up that it was various ways of preparing potato pancakes. Our food was pretty good, the staff was nice. I had the corned beef which my wife really loved when she tried it, claiming it tasted similar to corned beef her Polish parents cook. One thing to note, this restaurant is in Temple Bar, a very touristy part of town. Across the street is a pub which I believe had 'Traditional Irish Pub' in big letters on the side. If you want to taste Irish food, here is your choice. I got the recommended from the concierge at the hotel and went there in Saturday dinner around 1800. At that time the people are not so clouded so I got my table right the way, restaurant was so clean withy he local atmosphere. The waiter made me feel comfortable and he help a lot for menu selection. I got the local beer that was not the Guinness but it taste so good. Shucks. I wish I could go back and order something different. I knew this place was popular, and I loved the environment and ambiance (hence the three stars), but my order was a letdown. I picked the vegetarian chili boxty pancake. The boxty was interesting and I definitely enjoyed that part. The chili, on the other hand, was a little dull. It was made with tofu, but I don't think it was prepared as well as it could have been. I remember it tasting like tofu in a tomato sauce instead of actual chili. It was our last night in Ireland and we decided to eat here because it said "traditional Irish restaurant" and all other restaurants were Asian or bars. The waiter (he's British) asked if I was sure, since it's a very big piece. Guess he didn't think I could finish a ham hock. Well, I sure surprised him. The food was definitely very good there. Better than other places, which I can't remember the names of. But as we all know, Ireland's not known for its food. One thing to note is that they don't serve Guinness. Think smooth potato pancakes with delicious fillings. Great location in the Temple Bar area. Front of House manager was busy and greeted us both promptly and warmly in spite of not having reservations. We waited a short time and were seated in a second room, more spacious than the front (looks like there was a downstairs, too). We split the Gaelic Boxty and the Lamb Boxty with a starter of the Pear and Blue Cheese Salad. The salad hit the spot and I would recommend it as it was the right size for the two of us and didn't fill us up too much. Plus, the boxty comes with a mini side salad, we found out. The Boxty was a smooth pancake which becomes a wrap of sorts for the filling. In the case of the Gaelic Boxty, it was two stacked thin, tender perfectly cooked (med rare requested) steaks and was covered in not too much mushroom sauce. The Lamb Boxty was more Indian-flavour profile with chunks of lamb and soft but not overcooked carrots, topped with small chunks of cucumber in a thin yogurt tzatziki sauce. We ordered the trio of homemade ice creams for dessert and they were OK. They excel in the main dishes here. Really good place. Reommend it. read more

My first trip to Dublin and was brought here by my brother who had nothing but great things to say. I wasn't disappointed! The service was great and the food was just as good. Would recommend, and would visit again on a future trip. I had and recommend the chicken boxty and boxty platter appetizer both delicious. We came in and didn't have to wait long for a table however by the time we left they had a small group of people waiting on tables.
