The only thing was the restaurant wasn't the most comfortable place in the world, half of it has you sitting on tiny stools. During a trip to Dublin we did some research as to where we could find the best Irish stew, and this place popped up on a few lists, so we decided to give it a try. Being fairly hungry we ordered the sharing platter to start (the dumplings were AMAZING) but had we know the portion sizes of the stew we needn't have - the bowls were enormous!! It was phenomenal value for money and hands down the best stew I've had, and came with soda bread too (we also got some cabbage to share - you have to with stew after all). I've back here twice for breakfast, and I'm revising my opinion UPWARD. Dublin doesn't really DO breakfast (other than that thing with the rashers and the sausage and the egg and the tomato and the black pudding and a bit of farl if yer lucky), but occasionally I find a spot which realizes that the first meal of the day 1) could start before 11am and 2)might consist of something other than pork products. I'm a fan of their version of eggs benedict, or as they call it "Smoked Salmon and Poached Egg", served on toasted boxty loaf. Damn good food and a reasonable price for Temple Bar area. Went there the night before St. Patrick's Day, and as was the case for everything around there, was packed with a line to be seated. Even with the massive line, the staff and service was extremely friendly and quick after being seated. Busy evening in there, all the tables were filled, but still had wonderful service from the waiting staff. They were flitting about chatting to everyone all night. We were staying in the Temple Bar area and wanted "authentic" Irish food. The area feels very touristy as does this restaurant but we wanted to try the Boxty. Glad we did. It was crowded and they did have a wait but as we only had 2 in our party we were seated quickly. Our waiter was the stereotype of an Irish waiter....a flirt and lot of blarney but good service. This was not his first dog n pony show. We tried the Boxty Potato Dumplings ...Corned Beef & Cabbage and the Salmon BoxtyPancakes. They were very good. Visited Ireland on my Honeymoon a couple of years ago, and we had not heard anything about Gallagher's Boxty House, we just wandered by and the place looked so inviting, so we just went in. And boy were we glad we did so. 4 Years later I still remember I had the Murpheys Beef Stew and my wife had the Corned Beef and Cabbage Boxty. I mean when I still think about how great a meal was 4 years later I would say it made an impact. I love that they may seat you at a table for 4 and you might have to share with another couple. We met some nice people and had a great conversation when we ate at Gallagher's. The staff was very friendly and answered all our questions about the food. They were really top notch! I tried the boxty sampler which included fried boxty pancake strips/fries, a Irish "gnocchi" if you will and a potato like bread. It was so wonderful to try vintage recipes. I probably never would have ventured into The Boxty House if it hadn't been for the fact that I was on a Irish Food Trail. I seem to remember passing this place out on a regular basis dismissing the place as "just another tourist trap". But having eaten here more recently, i have to say that they really are tip-top! It is not just a place to try out a bit o' boxty (although it is a really good place to go to if you've never tried it before), they'll do you up a whole rake of Irish treats in here. Bailey's Irish cheesecake, Bread N' Butter pudding (actually better than mom makes!! bless!), rack o' lamb....well, basically look at the provided images. I can't claim to have tried them all, but as i was sat in me chair watching the waiters woft in and out with all these treats in the places, I thought to myself, "well, they smell ruddy good!!" Also, do check out the website. It has a really nice design, very modern and chic, with menus, and the history of the Boxty! Yup, i have to say it's a pretty solid recommendation not only for weekend tourists but also a nice place for a midweek lunch, if you've a friend visiting for a few days and they want to try some Irish grub, and you can't cook!! It's the perennial problem. You have visitors arriving from afar and you need to show them what Dublin is all about! So where do you bring them? Obviously some of the capital's finer hostelries such as the Stag's Head and The Long Hall get a look in. But if your guests are from Finland you know that they are going to be thirsty. If they have just run in the Dublin City Marathon then the potential for pint swilling starts to tip into the realms of the downright scary. They said that they wanted to experience Dublin life to its fullest. I assumed that didn't mean spending the night in the Bridewell fending off the drunken advances of some of Dublin's more 'colourful' characters! Soakage. That was my only hope of salvation. Soakage. With that in mind I booked Gallaghers for 7pm that evening. I asked if there was any chance that we could get a window seat. 'Highly unlikely' he said but he would make a note of my request on the booking sheet. He said they had a deal where you could have 3 courses for €25 plus an Irish Coffee for an extra €5. Sounded very reasonable to me. Although the place was packed when we arrived we were sitting at our window table within 5 minutes. The waiter was terrific and suggested we try some of the Porterhouse beers that they stock. Of course my Finnish friends dived at this opportunity and were quickly on their way to Valhalla (or whatever they call it in Finland). Then the soakage arrived :o) Starters: A mixture of Spiced Beef and Smoked Fish Mains: Stew for everyone Dessert: Stuffed so none ordered When the waiter asked if we would like deserts we declined but instead ordered 4 Irish Coffees. He then said 'Seeing as you are not having desserts I will only charge you for 2 Irish Coffees'! Top man and an excellent experience. The food was really terrific. Certainly not garnished with finesse, but if good comfort food at a great price is what you want, they provide it in bucket loads. I would highly recommend it! And the Finns? If I hadn't seen the reviews on Yelp I would have never eaten here. It's right in the middle of the Temple Bar area (the biggest tourist trap in Dublin) but I think I would have been hard-pressed to find a better Irish restaurant if I tried. I can image this place gets really busy and we were lucky to have gone on the early side. We were seated downstairs and our server was very friendly. I had one of the best stews I've ever tasted and the two people I dined with were also very happy with their traditional Irish meals. If our plans had accommodated it we would have definitely gone back a second time on this trip. The only strange thing about this place was that they don't serve Guinness draught but Murphy's instead. The bill was very reasonable (again, surprising in the middle of Temple Bar) and so I would not only recommend this restaurant but insist that anyone visiting Dublin eat here. read more

I would give Boxty 5 stars, and I guess on a regular night it would've easily gotten that but unfortunately I went there for Culture Night meaning the place was crowded and the waiters probably busy as hell. This is the first Irish restaurant I've been to in this country, and I gotta say I'm impressed. I'm all about irish food now! Amazing. First of all the location, the decor and the design of the menu is are all great. Top notch. Very homey, very "stewy" feeling haha. I had the dinner special, and from that I picked Chicken Pate as a starter (which you get with different homemade bread and a plum/raisin sauce and salad). I'm a big fan of pates so obviously loved this one. As the main course I picked the classic Irish lamb stew and boy was it the right decision. Couldn't finish it all, but the meal was very comforting and really warmed you up. As a dessert I took the apple crumble and I still think about that one. Seriously. You get ice cream to go along with it and all in all it is probably the best apple crumble I've ever had, and that's saying something because it is indeed my favorite dessert. I won't give it five stars because things we asked for weren't given. Water, more beer etc. These were all sort of forgotten by the waiter (which again is understandable due to the many people they had to serve). I will come here again (when I have money for it), and so should you. If you're in town just for visit, or even visit Ireland for the first time - do go. Reviews of the 3-stew sampler piqued my interest (a stew flight!) but I actually ended up caving into my love of pancakes and ordered the Boxty, which they are known for. I did not know what a Boxty was: I would describe it as a warm, savory wrap with the wrapping made from a thin potato pancake - and about as large in size as a giant burrito. There are many flavor options - I opted for the chicken, which was soaked in a creamy sauce. It was moist and tender. I would have taken a picture but they don't photograph well. Portions are huge and I didn't finish, although I wanted to because it was tasty. My friend ordered the vegetarian Boxty, but thought it was just okay. I think she was expecting the potato to be more like a latke than a crepe. We also ordered the "Boxty fries" which are thin, spicy, crispy fries (to contrast with the not-crispy, plump and soft "chips" they serve alongside fish.). They reminded me of frites, complete with dipping mayonnaise. And to top it off, we were sold on the craft cocktail menu. I come from a city, and neighborhood that opens a new craft cocktail bar on a weekly basis, so I had high expectations. I decided to use this opportunity to sample Irish whiskey with a whisky sour, served in a mason jar. Unlike my hometown, this drink was more liquor than ice and it lasts through the whole meal, a real sipper. It had a nice egg-foam on top. I'm not one for super strong or super sweet cocktails I thought it was perfect. I tasted my friend's drink from the drink special menu and found it also good but quite sweet. Another thing to note is that we ate dinner late, probably around 9:30 pm. When we first arrived around 8 pm, it was packed with a long line waiting for tables. We went around the corner to the Temple Bar and then returned and were seated immediately. I would keep that in mind, or else make a reservation (we dined on a Wednesday night). My travel buddy and I wanted to try some traditional Irish cuisine and since this restaurant had the word "traditional" in it, in we went. I had absolutely no idea what all the listed dishes were, so we both ordered their specialty/regular dish, the lamb stew and boxty (didn't know what that is either). This has got to be one of the worst stew I've ever tasted. To the point where I canNOT swallow it. I pushed the plate away and was just done. Came here for dinner 2 times during our trip to Dublin, and the food here is quite enjoyable! the first night, Mel & I shared everything: starting with the Atlantic Seafood Chowder, & the Boxty Platter (Boxty made 3 ways), and the main of a stew sampler. We were advised that this was enough food for 2 people, and they were totally right! It was even just a bit too much, as we didn't finish the stew. Boxty sampler - I love trying new foods, which is why we wanted to try the sampler. The best one was were the boxty dumplings with blue cheese sauce. It was like gnocchi with blue cheese. But I'll definitely say this about boxty in general - being that its made from potatoes as the main starch, I wasn't that impressed with boxty on its own. I feel its nothing that special, a bit meh - its like a plain flour pancake (or gnocchi) with a meat sauce of some sort, which "makes" the dish. Seafood Chowder - fresh, soft fish, and lots of it! Delicious dish Stew Sampler - we had a mix of the 3 meat stews, which was guiness beef stew, irish stew, and the coddle. Honestly, all were really nice, tasty and filling! To be fair, they all did taste a bit different in their own way, but with lots of carrots and potatoes. Would still highly recommend the sampler - you might think you get less, but try the trio and you'll still be full! Second night, was still good, though we were incredibly full and couldn't take our leftovers home as we were staying in a hostel! We really should have just ordered 1 dish, and shared an appy! I had the honey glazed ham hock, and mel had the corned beef. Both our dishes were good, though we also though the ham hock was really delicious! Crispy sweet skin, the meat just fell off the bone. Trouble is, its hard to finish these dishes off! We should've made a decision on one of those meats to share. Wow! The staff here was super friendly and the food was delicious. I can't remember my servers name but he was a medium build, bearded guy with reddish to brownish hair. He was so helpful in helping me order and even saved me from over ordering. Still the appetizer was so filling I didn't even finish half of it or my meal. I packed it up to give to a homeless person. I had the boxty platter and beef and Guinness stew. This place was one of my top 3 places I would eat again on my next visit if I come back. The restaurant hs a rustic, French vibe. First visited in 2005 on a jaunt through Ireland and thoroughly enjoyed our two dinners here. We remembered solid food, nice flavors, and yummy desserts. Fast forward five years and sure enough, same thing. We ventured out of the norms of Ireland's pub food and tried various Boxties. Everything we tried was satisfying, with nice flavors and tasted great with a Murphy's Irish Stout. If we're ever in the area again, I'm sure we'll hit up Gallagher's. read more

Take my opinion with a grain of salt because I'm an outsider, but I think the boxty here is pretty fecking grand. Got the corned beef boxty for lunch, which was about 12 Euro. Pricey in the way that lunch goes, but left me full to the brim and was loaded with delicious corned beef. Small selection of beers and some spirits. The place was relatively quiet at lunch time, but I imagine it picks up later in the night. Staff were nice and friendly. Went here for dinner on our first night in Ireland and absolutely loved it! We didn't make a reservation so we put our name in and had a drink at the pub across the street while we waited. And worth the wait it was!! We sat in the downstairs area, which although there were no windows, felt very cozy and warm. The atmosphere was fabulous and inviting and we ended up befriending the couple next to us. The service was impeccable and the food was amazing. We split the special appetizer (which was amazing and a nice sample of Irish classics) and the pear blue cheese salad. Both were delicious and a nice mix of salty and sweet. For dinner we split the Bangers and Mashed which was the best part of the meal for me, as I had been in search of a good Banger since I arrived in Europe earlier that week. The Boxty House is located in the heart of Temple Bar - a major tourist area in Dublin. On our last evening in Dublin we wanted to end the night with traditional Irish fare. Luckily, we were able to snag a table and got one of the best server's we'd experienced in Dublin, named Jules. Jule's was attentive, friendly, funny and played along with our banter - we had a lot of laughs. I had the Guinness Beef Stew at Jules' recommendation and it was delicious - and the others in my party had a burger and the Corned Beef Boxty. All of the food was very good! The price was right, the ambiance perfect and the food was excellent. But it's definetly wort a try! The name comes from the irish and means "poor house bread" - it's a traditional potatoe pancake. As you can imagine it gets served with all different kind of stuff. The food, the prices, and the service were all terrible. This was definitely not what I was expecting from a place with such high reviews. Where to begin? I ordered the fixed three course menu, choosing the blue cheese salad, the mushroom Boxty dumplings, and the bread-and-butter pudding. My sister ordered the Gaelic Boxty. The salad was a long time coming (20 minutes minimum), especially considering it was a salad! But this was nothing compared to the hour-long wait for my main. The waiter only updated us after we had been waiting 45 minutes and told us in a very brusque manner: "Your food is coming." No explanation as to why our two mains took so long, nothing. The restaurant was not even crowded! When our food finally arrived, my sister's dish was cold. My dumplings were piping hot and tasted pretty good, which was the only redeeming part of our experience. The dessert was another considerable wait and, other than the unique caramelized sugar topping, was nothing to write home about. From the dialects heard around us, the restaurant was clearly a tourist trap which I guess I shouldn't have been surprised about given its location in Temple Bar. If you are looking for authentic Dublin dining experience with food actually worth its price and friendly service, check out L Mulligan Grocer.
