I've been a 3-year customer of the Braid Bar (DTLA location) and I couldn't be happier with the level of service and care that I have received from the stylists there. They are all extremely talented and skilled at various braid styles and are thoughtful about recommending styles and hair care that benefit you. Jazz has been my braid stylist for the past 2 years and she has given me the most polished knotless braids. She has a gentle touch and kind demeanor, and works very efficiently without pulling or damaging your hair. When I get compliments on my braids, I'm always proud to tell people I owe it all to Jazz and The Braid Bar. The salon spaces at the DTLA location are clean and roomy, and have a nice amount of sunlight so you don't feel like you're stuck in a dark room all day. The chairs are pretty comfy and even allow me to use my computer lapdesk (for those times when I have to work during my braid appt). They have a TV with all the streamers or good music going to keep the vibes high. Their prices are fair and competitive and I appreciate that they only ask for a minimal deposit and not the bulk of your fee up front. She's very professional, kind, and patient but more importantly she's human and like with all of us sometimes life happens and unplanned delays occur. The hairstyle requires 5+ hours (which I was already aware of since it was listed on her booking site)but the environment of the shop made the time fly by between laughing and great conversation. Where do I begin? After booking my appt with Jessica, we corresponded back and forth via text message. She asked me to send her a picture of the hairstyle that I wanted, so I did. She advised me as to what hair to buy, I even took a picture of the hair and sent it to her. I then went to have kinky twists done with the ends curled for which she was to charge me a total of $225( remember I also paid about $45-$50 for hair) I assumed she knew what she was doing, boy was I wrong. To make a long story short, she did what looks like box braids with something done to the ends. When she was done I left because I was basically speechless, I then texted her asking her if she could cut my hair because it was extremely too long, ok I drive back downtown in rush hour traffic. She cuts the twist/braids and claims that she re-dipped them in hot water to basically seal the ends, um no....NOT! I then go back to the original picture that I sent her and I ask her and her co-worker if my hair looked anything like the picture and they were both pretty much quiet. Jessica just said I'm sorry you don't like your hair and kinda shrugged her shoulders, I mean my $255 was in her pocket, what did she care, oh yeah I didn't mention that I ovrepaid her but I sent a request through cash app requesting the overpayment back guess what, she denied that, refunded me $30 and sent a text stating that if I returned I could get 20% off my next service....I'll take a HARD PASS on that one. WARNING: long post! -- First & foremost, I don't like leaving bad reviews (especially not for Black businesses) but I was so frustrated by my experience that I wanted to share for people who may find it useful. This review is specifically for Jessica at The Braid Bar. Yesterday, I had my second and last appointment with her b/c while she does a good job braiding, her scheduling is a disaster and the way she does business is unprofessional. My first appt was in Aug '17 and Jessica texted me the day before asking if she could move my appt earlier in the day, which I agreed to. Then the morning of my appt she asked if I could come the next day instead (Sun.) which I said no to b/c I was unavailable and had already planned my Sat. around getting my hair done. I told her I felt uneasy about being asked to reschedule twice within 24 hrs and could cancel if she wasn't able to do my hair but come to find out she just wanted to close a scheduling gap in her day (not the problem of a client, but whatever). Then yesterday, I had an appt for box braids at Noon. Around 10:30am, Jessica texted me saying she was running behind and can I come at 1pm. I let her know that coming an hour later than scheduled wouldn't work since I booked the 12-6pm window (assuming I'd finish a little early) before an event I had tickets for that night. She made it clear she couldn't start my hair earlier than 1p so I asked for reassurance that I'd be finished before 6. Jessica replied "there's no definite with braids" so I decided to get a different style that takes less time just to be safe. Instead of being understanding, or even apologizing for pushing my appt back an hour (which she never did) Jessica replied with a passive aggressive txt/screenshot of my StyleSeat booking (as if I somehow didn't know what I booked?) stating that technically I wasn't supposed to be finished until 6pm and she said I'd be finished within that time but fine. Excuse me?? Her exact words were "there's no definite with braids" and nothing about her end of the text exchange was reassuring or even apologetic for moving my appt back an entire hour. How Jessica can inconvenience a client then reply dismissively after a compromise was suggested is beyond me. I thought maybe she was just having an "off" weekend the first time around but now I'm convinced that her communication is horrible and she's inconsiderate. If you value your time or customer service, book with a different braider. read more

My braider (JAZZ) arrived late with no apology and an attitude. At the start she seemed to be struggling with braiding my hair and needed the owner's assistance with braiding and directing her on how many parts to make etc. I did appreciate the owner stepping in; however, if a client is paying these steep prices for a style it should be with a professional who knows what they're doing. Jazz was very heavy handed and continually yanked at my hair. I asked her not to comb through my natural hair with a fine tooth comb and when she finally adjusted to using a paddle brush she continued to brush my hair with unnecessary force. To top it off, when she was finally done, which took approximately 3 1/2 hours for Jumbo sized individual braids, she burned my neck with hot water when dipping the ends of the braids. When I asked for a towel to be placed around my neck to avoid being burned a 2nd time, she had the nerve to blame me by saying I need to keep my head still. The finished look - definitely not worth $180 for jumbo mid length braids with knots. The braids weren't consistent throughout and I had white gel residue caked up on the braids in the front. Waited about 30 minutes for the lady to get here. By the way I'm pregnant and standing outside. When she gets here she ask me if I brought hair and I was not informed that I needed to bring any hair with me for my appointment. I give the woman 20 bucks to go get the hair and she says there are no hair stores open. Google tells you the opening time of the hair stores. So of course I have to leave with my hair undone because she has another client. I ask her to send me the 20 dollars on PayPal because I had to head home to get some food. She said she would send it to me and it was never sent. This is supposed to be a high rating braid shop but it was hot in there and the woman's chair was broken. Didn't try to make me feel comfortable in anyway. The owner did not even respond to any of my messages. I would not recommend this shop to anyone if you want excellent service! read more

Hair was ok. Not worth the price. ($175) Some of the braids were twisted in the back. The front was neat but way too small. They got larger towards the back. I was REALLY desperate to get my hair braided. I wish that I had waited until I found a recommended braider. Once I got home and looked at the back I felt silly. I saw a few ladies leaving the shop with very nice box braids and larger cornrows. I don't know the names of the other braiders. It's unprofessional to eat and talk on the phone at a salon while you're doing anyone's hair. I would not have minded if she took a break. I don't even know if she wiped her hands. She is young. And I asked to be squeezed in which I do regret. I was expecting a totally different experience. I'm not familiar with LA. I saw pictures online and assumed that Twy had braided them. That was a dumb assumption. I don't recommend asking her to do cornrows unless she likes you and you are familiar with her work. She did beautiful box braids on another lady. My little cousin could have done better small cornrows. I recommend bringing your own human hair. I've learned a lot of lessons from this experience. I've been hesitant to get braids after a really bad experience where my braids were braided to tight around my hairline and caused a lot of damage. After another stylist stood me up, these ladies took me as a same day walk in, and they were able to fit me in the small window of time I had available (between two auditions and a fitting). This was a bad experience. I wasn't going to leave a review until i saw that this same stylist has a lot of bad reviews. I wish I had read them before booking with her. I booked with Jessica weeks in advance. I sent her a photo of what I wanted. When I got there she told me she wouldn't use the hair I brought. She said it wasn't Marley hair. It was Cuban Twist hair which is Marley hair. Either way she never mentioned that there was any type of hair she wouldn't use or any hair she prefers. It would've been helpful to know that when I booked my appt. She tried to get me to go buy other hair even though at this point the appt was already over an hour late because she pushed it back.
