My experience has been hit or miss here. Food is average and beer selection is ok. I used to go for the pool tables, but last time I went they told us the whole party had to be drinking to use the pool table. Really? Not all party was going to play or drink. I come here every so often. I play pool grab a beer and a steak. The atmosphere is great and relaxed. If you want a place where you can go solo or with a group of friends this place checks all the boxes. Multiple tvs for sports if you like or booths for a group. Good beer selection, some craft beers. Maybe my third time there and it's been awhile. I met the owner only because the person I went there with knew Steve and Steve remembered him. Very nice and personal kind of guy. I Had put in a phone order for a 13oz steak cooked medium, I heard very good things about their food and what I heard was spot on. The steak and baked potato were delicious and cooked to perfection. We had a few drinks and got introduced to a patron named Mike who was hanging with the owner, very nice passive guy. I also met the bartender Sherri very nice and professional. This is the local dive bar-- where you go to drink, maybe eat something, and chat with friends you've just met or known for years. It is a working class type bar, good prices and not too fancy. Brass Monkey is at the corner of Jernee Mill and Bordentown,not far from Starland Ballroom. It is in a strip mall with a few other places like Mia's Pizza, Dunkin' Donuts, and a coin laundry. It's within walking distance of the east side of Winding Wood apartments. There is a liquor store in the front that is open until 10 pm. Even though the bar was packed (I guess there's some concert with a Y2K "metal" band nearby ‍‍‍) Kira was super attentive to me and my husbands orders and her cocktails were on point! I've traveled a lot and she makes a perfect English gin and tonic (minus the mint.) I cant wait till my next visit when we will have more time to enjoy selections from the menu. I was pleasantly surprised by this place! Very clean and a nice relaxed crowd. Felt comfortable and at ease. The bartender was very nice and attentive but not too annoying or pushy. Which is a hard task to manage. Especially with all of the multitasking she was doing. She didn't make any mistakes and she kept track of everything. With a pretty busy crowd. Drove past this pub everyday going to and from work but never stopped in. We were told that The Brass Monkey had great burgers. They were right. I asked for mine cooked medium, and it was medium! Fries were crispy outside and soft inside. The bar pie was everything you could expect. The portions were plenty and prices were very affordable. If you are on your way to Starland Ballroom in Sayreville NJ for any sort of anything you should stop here and get a drink first. It's in the strip mall on the corner of Journey Mill Road. From the front it only looks like a liquor store, but the bar's in back. You'll pay for 2 or 3 drinks here what Starland will charge you for one, and that's plus 1 star in my books. When I first found this bar I wasn't expecting much since it was in a strip mall. But the is a must stop especially before any concert at Starland Ballroom since it is a 5 sec ride from there. This is a dive bar at its best, two pool tables and darts, best part is the prices. Full bar menu with nothing really over 9 dollars and the beer is cheap. There was excellent service, on top of that, they cook the food right in front of you so you know everything is clean. This is a great option for anyone in the area looking for a low key place where you can grab a few drinks, play some pool or throw some darts. One woman ran the whole oppetation last night from serving drinks to making food and I never had to wait at all. I've never been more impressed by a bartender/chef. Its not that food was so amazing, though it actually was perfect bar food and the best possible version of every thing we ordered, its that she managed to make it all work by herself. All my favorite qualities in a not-quite-a-dive bar: Allagash White on tap, a nice menu that included fish and veggie options (yummy pierogi!), 2 pool tables that appeared to be well kept. It's a bit far for me, but I'd come back for the vibe and to play pool. Judging by the many pool trophies that line every wall, there must be leagues that play here. We were deciding where to hang before the concert at Starland Ballroom. So we tried this place and it was great. Beer was ice cold, the food was good, staff was nice and the jukebox was nice and loud. When we go out to other bars they lower the jukebox or its just not loud enough so that was a nice treat.
