Well, what can I say about the Bread Company? Well I would tell you through interpretive dance, but unfortunately that is not an option on Yelp. So words will have to do. This place...has some high quality food, high quality staff and is very quick! I've never had a bad meal there, whether it be lunch or dinner. Their specials are the real showstopper too. The picture I have included, is of a Lamb Sandwich (I call it a Lamb Sam). It was incredible and would be a fine choice for a last meal for a person on death row or something. But other than that, there really isn't anything bad to say about this restaurant. The homemade bread is great, with plenty of varieties and sizes. The baked goods are amazing too. This place has a pretty cool vibe. The wine bottles in the window make you think you're somewhere that's kinda classy. And from what I can tell the food is pretty good. The only thing I've had is the Ham, Egg, and cheese grab and go sandwich. The grab and go sandwiches are a nice concept. So, if you come into the bread company between 8 and 11, you can get a breakfast sandwich with egg, cheese and your choice of meat for only $3.50. In my opinion that is one hell of a steal. It comes on a freshly toasted baguette. The meat is warm and the egg is more or less fluffy. I thought it was quite delicious! My only critique would be that it was slightly dry. They could add a bit more of whatever sauce was on it, but it was still super tasty. It wasn't a super quick grab and go experience though. It took them about 10 min to make, which was ok with me, but might be a little long for someone who wants to "grab and go". Overall though if your looking for a filling, warm sandwich on slightly crisped but still fluffy bread, this is the place to go. read more

One thing I really appreciate about this place is the fact that sell fresh bread and rolls. Many European find that when they come to America there is a lack of bakeries which sell fresh bread daily. As far as there food goes, I've never had a bad experience. I like to go here for lunch and get the chicken sandwich which comes with a reasonably sized salad. Decent enough dinner place very conveniently located basically in the middle of campus. Open seating with an eccentric variety of chairs, many of them too low. My meat and roasted veggies plate was far more veggies than meat, but tasty. Service very good. read more

I love this place for both lunch and dinner. For the lunch the ambience is casual. Students are coming in and out for coffee, pastries, sandwiches, and soup. There is always a vegetarian and non-vegetarian option, which is wonderful. All of the food is fresh; this is a cute cafe but because it is freshly made to order it is not fast. This is not like a cafe that warms up pre-made food in a microwave, so only order lunch here if you have time. The dinner ambience is completely different; one time I was studying here from 12PM - 5PM and the atmosphere completely changed! It was getting very formal for dinner with candle lights on each table and minimal other lights; an intimate setting was being created while I was out with my laptop lol. That's when I realized that for dinner it is no longer a cafe. The menu has many pastas, pizzas, and salads that are very delicious. I had a salad and pesto pasta; I tried two vegetarian pizzas. All of the food was fantastic. They take reservations for dinner and accomodate groups which is wonderful; street parking is available and free after 7PM I believe. read more

Came here for brunch with my mom and brother... As big water drinkers, we were really appreciative of how on it our waitress was about making sure we had a full pitcher on the table at all times. We ordered 2 omelettes and crepes. The cheese in the crepes wasn't completed melted in a small part that didn't seem to have gotten enough heat. However, the food was still really good and well priced for what it was. The hollandaise sauce was thick and had the tiniest bit of spice in it. So yummy! I popped in here once for lunch last summer, on the recommendation of my nutrition professor. Our chat on carbs and training for races and triathlons led to "you HAVE to go to the Bread Company!" Though this overly subtle carb stop doesn't have a sign (anymore?) on its exterior, it can be identified by the variety of wine bottles lining the window sills. There's a variety of sandwiches for the lunch hour, but I hit the Bread Company tonight, and my, do they swank it up for dinner. Dim lights, plentiful menu of pasta-pizza-sandwich options, and extensive specials list, including tapas. Who knew? I had the roast beef sandwich, served atop roasted potatoes and a light salad. Restaurant review After 1 year of living in Champaign, I finally had a chance to come to this restaurant recommended my a previous coworker. The reviews on Yelp are quite mix and it appears that lunch is good, but dinner is so so. Since I have not found another restaurant that has chocolate fondue here in Central IL, we decided to come here for dinner. I will say that I really wanted to like this restaurant, but overall value is a 2 star, the option for fondue brings it up to a 2.5. It is located right on campus and I never even knew about this restaurant when I lived nearby. The ambiance is very eclectic, lots of wall decorations and a European cafe feel. The multiple non-matching chairs throughout the dining room maybe a "modern" design, but I felt it was very "chintzy". I thought about going with the filet or fish entree, but the other reviews made me a little concern so I went with a safe dish (Shrimp fettuccine) with a light tomato basil cream sauce. It took a bit of time for the dish to come out. Meanwhile, we were given complimentary french bread. Given the name of the restaurant I was a bit disappointed that the bread was not a soft piping hot bread from the oven. Well I digress, back to the entree, it really wasn't anything special. My wife's quote on her salmon salad and the pasta was, "It taste like food you can make at home". The portions sizes were also smaller than expected when you order pasta at a restaurant. I was hoping that the chocolate fondue would be the redeeming value of the meal. Unfortunately this was not the case. Typically you would expect strawberries and maybe even a rice crispy treat to dip in the chocolate. Don't get me wrong the dark chocolate was amazing, but they gave a plate of pears, green and red apples, and some sort of cake that crumbled when you poked at it too hard with the fondue fork. Service is hit or miss, our server came by a few times and made sure our cups of water were filled. This maybe a great place for date night on campus or maybe for sandwiches at lunch, but my dinner experience was so so. Pros: Cheese and chocolate fondue, I have yet to find another place that has this option. Great for date night with wine, cheese, bread etc. Cons: Expensive based on what you get, small portion size, no hot fresh bread from the bread company for dinner, where are the strawberries, marshmallow, or rice krispy treats with the chocolate fondue? I think if they tried they could make this a stellar restaurant here in CU. This place has a great brunch menu. While it can get busy during peak hours on weekends, the group I was with got seated very quickly and our waitress was delightful. Overview: The Bread Company is a one of the best restaurants on campus. It has tremendously high quality food and a great atmosphere. The place is good for lunch or dinner. They have tons of fresh bread that is great in all of their dishes or the bread can be bought by the loaf separately. Everything tastes great and they have some complex fun dishes which is different from most places on campus. The portions are not huge and it is a bit pricey, but it is definitely worth it. Recommended Dish: For lunch, I would highly recommend the roast beef sandwich with Gruyere, caramelized onions, & dijonnaise. It's a great spot for when you want something classier than the fast food on Green Street, and the prices are very reasonable for what you get. I was very excited to find a Swiss and European bakery / restaurant that offered fondue choices. We chose a pot of Classic Cheese Fondue and a pot of Beef Fondue. The beef broth had a wonderful flavor. The beef pieces were seasoned just right. Roasted potatoes and three dipping sauces were included-- basil, Worcestershire, and garlic. The cheese pot contained a mix of of Gruyere & Emmentaler cheeses. The accompaniments were their bakery bread and roasted potato chunks. We paired the meal with a pitcher of red sangria. One of my favorite spots in Champaign. Their lunch is perfection I always get my favorite sandwich, a lemonade and a cookie. I love the gruyere sandwich with olive tapenade it is my go-to here.
