I would love to know the tipping protocol at this place. There's a 18% service automatically charged and then there is a suggested tip amounts ranging from 5-10%... so I'm confused on whether the service charge is gratuity or why the suggested tip is less than 15%. Additionally, there is an extra 3% automatically charged(I believe for CC). With this math- expect to pay an extra 21% on your bill... (which I'm not sure if it goes to the staff or not). read more

A friend and I went to dinner here over the weekend. Upon walking in, there is a bleach smell that is strong throughout the restaurant. The place is small and looks like other brunch spots around the area. Our reservation was for 5:30, but i had to push back to 6:30pm, which they were very accommodating. We were seated immediately. Today was my only day off and I was determined to not just sit at home. So to brunch I went. I heard so many good things about The Breakfast Club and decided to see for myself. I came around 12:30pm and that was perfect! I was able to find parking right out front and a nice seat at the bar. The bartender was very attentive and nice. He recommended the Garlic Shrimp and the Seafood & Grits. I got the shrimp dish but decided to get the Collegiate (oxtails & potatoes) instead. Both dishes were really good. I wasn't able to finish my meal lol. For my cocktails I tried the Papa Sherman and the Mint Prohibition.... Both were also delicious. It's so pretty and quaint. It was especially sweet for me because my mother is over 80 years old and not vaccinated and this was the first restaurant we went to since the pandemic where she could dine outside and feel comfortable. This spot is definitely worth checking out, but I would not go there if I was in a hurry. The good: It's a cool hip scene, young crowd, they have a nice bar and overall it's a nice looking place. The food is delicious, I have to give them that, I got the chicken and waffles and it was definitely very good, and the waffle was made with a very tasty and fresh batter. We also had an omelette with potatoes and it really was perfectly made. The cooks are on point for sure, and they are very generous with the food. We could not finish all of it, we were stuffed. Room for improvement: Any place that charges automatic 18% gratuity to their table is going to have servers that do not give their all because you have now taken that incentive from them, and that is the experience we got. Our server was nice, but we only saw him at the beginning to take our order and at the end to ask him for the check, he did not come to check on us at any other point. We saw the nice girl who poured water and the photographer who sells you framed pics more than we did our server. So something worth keeping in mind. Also, the food took almost an hour to get there. We were not in a hurry, and they were not very busy when we first got there, but they definitely do get packed, so I can only imagine that it may take a while to get the food turned around once it does get busy. I definitely would not come here if you are trying to squeeze it in with other plans. Although when we arrived, the hostess notified us that they were no longer taking walk-ins, we were able to sit at the bar. Knowing that the restaurant is quaint, we did not expect speedy service, to which the staff was hospitable and assisted us the best they could. Regarding food items. We ordered the Rhythm and Blues along with the Dreaming of Paradise. I ordered two Rhythm and Blues during the course of my dining experience, however they did not taste the same, even though they were made by the same bartender. We ordered the Fenton Street Wings, which were fried to perfection and seasoned well. The Breakfast Club Mac was disappointing. Too much cheese and not enough seasoning. The Chicken Biscuit sandwich also did not have enough seasoning or gravy. We ordered the Club Omelette and added the lobster, but the omelette was loaded with spinach. What dropped my rating from a 4 star to a 3 star is what occurred at the bar during our visit. As we ordered another drink after our food arrived, we noticed that one of the servers who seemed to be assigned to clean the bar area took a personal liberty and attempted to make tequilla shots for staff who had just gotten off work and were lounging at the end of the bar. She did not utlize proper sanitization practices and even proceeded to lick her finger while rimming glasses with salt. The other incident involved an altercation between two staff persons, to which I would like to speak to the manager offline to explain what was observed. He never asked if we needed water refills or anything. We waited so long that we had to get another waiter to get our waiter so that we could pay the bill which made us exceed the 90 minute time limit. They only accept cash or 3 credit cards per check. Check your bill because we ran into some challenges where items were on our bill that we did not order. There is an ATM in the restaurant that allows you to get $20 MAX per withdrawal. Yes, that means you have to pay the ATM service charge 10 times if you want $200. The restaurant is on the small side and the clientele is younger. There was a young lady there with a bonnet on. They know the secret to make a well flavored and tinder oxtail the oxtail friend rice was PERFECT! The rice has so much flavor and texture alone that the oxtails just set it off! The lamb was cooked almost to perfection, but it was flavored well! The happy hour menu was off the chain. You HAVE TO HAVE the oxtail eggrolls and the crab fritters 11/10! The steak and lamb chops were cooked as requested (medium well) and had a good flavor. Everything came out hot. I enjoyed my Early Morning Sunrise mocktail without the sprite and it was a refreshing sweet juice mix. The Breakfast Club is a popular restaurant in the area, so always make a reservation (even if you think you are going at an off time). When I arrived I was promptly greeted and once the other person in my party made it, we were seated right away. We were given recommendations by our server and then left alone to make our selections. If there is oxtail on the menu, I'm getting it! So I ordered the oxtail and grits. It also happened to be one of the recommendations by our server. I also ordered the house signature soda, which has sorrel in it. Both were incredible! If I'm being honest, the flavor and texture of the oxtail is the closest I've had to my mother in law's homemade oxtail (a huge compliment!). The grits were the perfect texture and everything was well seasoned. Highly recommend! Finally, the music playing throughout the restaurant is 10/10. Whoever curated that playlist deserves a raise! I've seen The Breakfast Club trending a bit so I was glad that a friend wanted to eat here so we could catch up. I'd read a number of reviews that recommended the French Toast and Seafood Deviled Eggs, so I knew I wanted to try the eggs and the Chicken and French Toast. I would definitely get the Deviled Eggs again and French Toast again...but unfortunately I found that the chicken wings weren't really seasoned; reading other reviews it seems like it's a hit or miss with the chicken wings being seasoned. I also requested that my chicken wings be extra crispy, but they weren't quite extra crispy. Overall I'd rate the food a 7.5/10; I would return. Our waiter was great and we received our food quickly. I was really hoping for a different experience than what I had at the Breakfast Club. After checking out the menu the night before I was super excited to try it out. The restaurant itself is beautiful inside. Great vibe, nice decor, and great music. My disappointment wasn't in the food, I want to make that clear. The food was absolutely amazing. Our waitress was missing the mark on just about everything. It started with our drink order. I ordered a glass of Chardonnay and my girlfriend ordered a glass of Riesling. Anyone who knows wine can tell the difference between the two. After one sip of my glass I knew it wasn't Chardonnay. I told our waitress and she was convinced it was. I didn't want to go back and forth with her so I switched my drink. I then asked for a sidecar without the sugar rim. What do I get nearly 15 mins later...a sidecar with sugar on the rim. When I let her know I didn't want the drink, she appeared to have an attitude. In addition, the entire time we were there she was nowhere to be found. We had to ask other servers to find her for us. It was just poor service. Very unfortunate. Guess that's what happens when 20% gratuity is guaranteed. Overall, it was an ok experience. What kept it positive for us was the food and having the opportunity to speak with the chef who clearly cared about delivering a great experience. Hear me out, I don't mean it's a 3 in a bad way, it's a 3 as in I'd come back and try something else because my food was good but there are some things I would change about the establishment as a whole. Reservations: Made on Opentable. They called me a few days before and left a voicemail to confirm if I was still coming and said they hold reservations up to 15 mins. We were seated immediately upon arrival, with no wait on a Saturday at 2pm (it was also nasty weather outside but they still had a pretty packed house). Ambiance: The music was good but it was too loud for me. I had to lean in to hear my friend when we were talking, if they turned the volume down by about 25% it would be just right. I understand wanting to create a vibe, but I also want to be able to talk to my friend. It's tight inside, but I believe this is technically downtown Silver Spring, so it makes sense. The smaller tables are kind of packed in and you'll be close to another table. It's beautifully decorated to look like something from a few decades ago, the light fixtures were gorgeous, the balloon arch was a little misplaced but it was still pretty. Service: Our waiter came immediately and asked us if we've been there before and made recommendations for food. After that we barely saw him. There was a guy who cleaned up tables and a woman who refilled water, so maybe they all share tips. My water cup never went below half, so I was appreciative of that. They include a service charge on all checks, no matter the party size. They also charge 3% when you use a CC, luckily I had cash. When the waiter came at the end of our meal with the CC machine, it was kinda awkward because he just stood there and I had to ask "are you going to tell us our total" or at least see the dang machine with the charges, he was cool though so big deal. It was a little odd, maybe they don't split checks either. Food: I ordered the chicken and waffle and a side of soft scrambled eggs. The eggs were cooked perfectly, I added salt and pepper. The chicken was seasoned to perfection and so delicious. There were def some hairs still on the chicken, so if you're opposed to that, then now you know. The waffle was average and it wasn;t that hot. I'd skip the waffle next time and try the french toast. My friend ordered the french toast and chicken and comes with a sauce on it that we both really liked it had a lemon flavor to it but was somehow still a little savory. I tried her potatoes and they were perfectly crispy and seasoned well. Next time I'd try one of the oxtail dishes. read more

My favorite brunch dish is The Collegiate! I love everything about it, the fried egg on top, the oxtails (bone in) the potatoes and gravy from the oxtails. This particular time I had the decadent ice cream donut sprinkled with powdered sugar and a hint of strawberries, the fall off the bone well seasoned oxtails with potatoes and an egg, and a beverage. Everything was packed with flavor and super delicious. The food portions are a nice size and my stomach is always satisfied. My entree and dessert were recommended by my server and he did an excellent job with the recommendations so much so that I always order the same entree! I hate I cannot remember our server name, but she was petite, big smile, and had her hair up in a bun (I think she had dreads). She offered her favorites and recommended great food options. the manager Bianca (praying I spelled it right) was really nice and accommodating as well. Decor was soooo pretty! i also realized the restaurant is smaller than I expected. Anywho, on to the food: * Vanilla Bean FrenchToast - very good actually! * Eggs, Bacon, Potatoes - eggs were good, bacon could've been cooked a little longer, and the potatoes were just as delicious. * Grits - I could've ate the whole bowl * Oxtail & Grits (not pictured) - So bomb! Oxtail was tender, the sauce it was in was sooooo good and the grits?!?! Hitting! * Shrimp Deviled Eggs - the shrimp were big, but the "devil" in the egg, not so great. It is tasted like the egg was boiled, cut in half and the shrimp layer on top. It needed a lot of seasonings. * Garlic Pepper Shrimp - the juice these shrimp were in, was soooo flavorful. Shrimp were huge and delicious * Fenton Street Wings - BOMB! Ask for them to be cooked extra crispy. The sauce on them were sooooo good! * Macaroni & Cheese (not pictured) - needed help with the seasoning, it just tasted like noodle and cheese; no salt, pepper, nothing. Overall, definitely . Tried this place for budge and was not disappointed. I had the oxtail and grits and that was like two meals. It was delicious and all I could say is go try them ASAP. It's a pretty small spot and a little loud, which was fine. I don't know if they take reservations because I was part of a group but they get very crowded so make reservation reservations or get there early. read more

I love walking into a business where I'm acknowledged and greeted immediately. While I was looking at the menu I already knew what I was going to get, however, I wanted to ask my server about his recommendations. He was very helpful on giving a few options and even sold me on an entree which I wasn't planning on getting! Sometimes it just takes a little friendly attitude and convincing to definitely buy me into anything! Upon walking in, you can tell this place is very well maintained, professional, and beautifully decorated. I'd definitely like to add that I love how all the servers here make sure you are well taken care of with water refills! My food was fresh and hot! 10/10 read more
