Although short, it was detailed. The staff did a great job of going over the places worth going. I like that they made a brochure that goes over all of the staff member's favorite places. It is nice and thoughtful. -The place itself is clean and maintained. As you go up to your room, it is kept clean constantly. The floor you are in has an ice machine (very strong and powerful, a bit loud) and a laundry room. The good thing is that you will often find the laundry room available. You do have to have quarters to use it but the front desk staff can exchange dollar bills for you. -The rooms themselves are neat. To get lightening in, you have to slide in an extra room key into a slot and this is what activates the lights. The bathrooms are stocked and clean. The spacing of the room is ample for a group of 4. They do have a microwave, a nice addition to the standard hotel room. The balcony is small but it provides a great height and activity if you are facing pool side. - Their fitness area is a bit small but it has all you need to do a quick workout. I like that they have bathrooms next to the area should you need to freshen up at any given point during your workout. I would like to show out to the general manager Josh. After the first night, we had a group a couple of rooms away that were noisy throughout the whole night. Telling Josh this, he promptly moved us to another room, another floor to allow us to have a nicer stay. He was kind, attentive, not only listened to our concern but provided a solution that worked out best for everyone.

My family ran a few errands and returned around 5:00 PM to check in. When we arrived, we had to wait approximately 20 minutes to check in because two of the three employees were assisting another guest. Once we finally checked in and received our room keys, we went to our room. The moment we opened the door, we were hit with an awful smell. The room reeked of mildew and smelled as though it had not been properly cleaned in a very long time. I immediately contacted the front office, expecting that, given the condition of the room, we would be offered another room. Instead, the manager told us that the hotel was completely sold out and that, because I had booked through Booking.com, there was not much they could do other than have the room cleaned. My husband and I discussed our options. We had already been traveling for five hours, were exhausted, and our child was tired as well. Rather than continue searching for another hotel, we decided to let them clean the room and hoped that would resolve the issue. Unfortunately, it did not. When we returned, the room appeared to be clean, but the real problem became apparent when we went to bed. The sheets smelled strongly of mildew and sweat. The condition and odor of the bedding made it seem as though the sheets had not been properly cleaned or replaced after the previous guest. It was absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. It is current 2:14 a.m and I am up due to not being able to sleep comfortable in a bed I paid for due to the smell of the sheets. A hotel room should be clean, fresh, and sanitary especially when you are paying for a hotel that is advertised as a 4.4-star property. This experience fell far below any reasonable standard. I will never stay at this hotel again, and I plan to escalate this matter beyond the manager because of how poorly our concerns were handled. Please believe the reviews before booking here. I wish I had. We normally don't stay at 4.4-star hotels, but I decided to give this one a chance. Unfortunately, that was a decision I deeply regret. That line of discussion felt dismissive of what I experienced during my stay. Its designer also deserves 5 stars! But that's not what will bring us back. What will bring us back, is Andre and his honesty, his hardworking/attention to cleanliness, and most importantly his kindness. Andre and his staff go above and beyond for their guests. From finding/shipping a lost ring (for another quest) to taking pride in the appearance of the motel, from sharing great ideas for food/drink/etc. He cares!!! He made our stay in the comfy beds, cool air conditioning, and hot shower unit that we had even that much better. You will love your stay at the Surf Shanty and you will remember Andre! What made this especially frustrating was not only the experience itself, but what happened afterward. Despite medical documentation and months of follow-up, the matter was delayed and ultimately denied through the claims process. I have been a Hilton Honors member for nearly 20 years and recently became a Diamond member. I continued staying at Hilton properties because I believed customer loyalty and safety concerns would be taken seriously. Travelers should do their own research and make informed decisions. I'm sharing my experience because I wish I had known more before my stay.
