Randomly came upon The Brighton, walked in and immediately felt a New Orleans vibe which was delightful. A good ole dive bar feeling where one can relax and be yourself. The staff were amazing, specifically Hubert who provided a laid-back vibe and very good conversation while I sat at the bar. Hubert was working hard pouring drinks and making Nachos for a growing mix of ppl coming from the Lamb of God concert. The 2 girls waiting on customers were also pleasant and down to earth. The music was an eclectic mix of old school rock all the way to the 80's, 90's and current metal. Loved it! The place was open late with No Pressure to get out during last call. Amazing place, what an awesome find after a long ferry ride. Very inviting atmosphere, awesome layout, and the bartender is a freaking gem! We have been back multiple times since, not only due to the ambiance, but also the care that Hubert (rad dude!) has shown us. It loses 4 stars for literally everything else, including crappy food and a childish bartender who thinks its appropriate to bump in to customers and make stupid offhand comments about it. Party of three said these neighbours with glee. Sat at a booth & had some vermouth. (okay, not really. I had a Strongbow & they had some beer) One ordered meat pie which I jealously eyed, my salad of chicken because gluten-free makes for slim pickin' Another had a wrap which landed in his lap. The server was kind and helped us unwind. The game was on the tube and to the music we grooved. When it was done, I'd say we had fun. We'll be back for some more next week or before. I am really upset since I have stop by for a pint or two on a number of occasions and consistently just never seem to get any service. Inviting, friendly place. We were welcomed, as were we, by a great staffer who seemed to be handling the entire front of house by herself - and with aplomb. She explained how the self service and pay as you go worked (maybe temporary covid things?) And we headed to a back, outdoor courtyard, which had fire tables and a great atmosphere. Decent neighbourhood pub with a great trivia night! Came here a few weeks ago with some friends for trivia - they have a regular team, and it's clear that a lot of folks do! It was busy, and it looked like there was some kind of beer tasting event happening on the back patio too. The service was decent - it's tough when you've got a full house and an activity going, but our server did a fine job. The beer was good, they've got some great ones on tap, and solid specials too. The food looks tasty, and the nachos I tried were cheesy, just how I like 'em! I wasn't in a great mood when I came here, so I'd probably like it a lot better if I came back another time! I want to love this place. I really do. It's just a block from home, and there are so few pubs/bars in the area. I work in the industry and recognize they've only been open a month; they've got some kinks to iron out. The menu is hurting. I like the local approach, but they need to define what it is they are offering. Pub food? Do it well. It's a little peculiar that they're cooking behind the bar, but obviously they've tried to creatively accommodate despite space restrictions. I had the bangers and mash; pretty tasty, I've had Falconettis sausages at Falconettis. Didn't disappoint. The mash was very good. The portion size though was really small. Like, appetizer small. Or kids menu small. I don't want/need some super size Denny's Diner portion. But I did want/need dinner. Great beer list, draft and bottles; good work there. Beer specials every day. Again, good stuff. Scotch and bourbon, on point; kudos. If the server hadn't botched my Old Fashioned, I would've been a lot happier. Just tell me you don't know how to make it, and I'll order another beer instead. Service was pretty weak all around. There weren't more then 20 people in the room at any given time, but empty glasses abound and guests looking for a server. DON'T let people go thirsty, or they'll make it over to the Drive. Popped in here for a quick drink with a friend. I must say I was disappointed when i went to order a blueberry tea and the waitress didn't know it was made with alcohol but was quick to say she could look it up. The chair I sat in was wobbly and felt like it might fall apart any minute. I will give the place a second chance because I really want to love it. read more

Friend and I ended up here on a wed night, did not know about the reg trivia night but we joined in and our team tied for 5th in the first round. Not bad for a random night. Happy hour goes till 8 and I fully recommend the spicy artichoke and provolone dip, mmm cheesy goodness. We will be back and next time we'll try the risotto balls. read more

Great place! Food is yummy. I love the coco bun and bangers n mash. Have gone numerous times on a saturday night and the vibe is awsome! Of course the kareoke brings out a good mix of happy people who just wanna get drunk and sing the night away. But really haven't heard any bad kareoke singers either. Place is small so its hard to move around but thats what brings all these strangers closer and eventually everyone starts talking to each other.Similar to a small town pub. I've even made friends from the brighton. Im also impressed with the only two staff members there every saturday night. Erin, she is able to handle it all and same with the one cook/bartender. I had been looking forward to my first visit here since moving back to the area after a few years downtown. I loved the idea of having a new go-to pub. Regrettably those hopes were dashed today as I decided to try it out with a friend visiting from out of town. What a disaster! When we walked in we saw a sign touting terrible food, terrible service, and good British humour. We thought it was just a funny, sarcastic sign, but nope. It was 100% correct, minus the humour part. As we were both feeling a little dehydrated from the night before, we ordered a couple waters. When they arrived they were accompanied by white floaties; a bad sign in and of itself. But we had already ordered our food with our water, so we felt obliged to wait. Half an hour later we got the most disgusting meals we have ever been served. I ordered the moderately priced Sunrise Salad with chicken, while my friend ordered the chicken sandwich with salad. Both came sparsely topped with the most horrible, dry, 3-day-old chicken I have ever seen in my life. I tried to choke it down, but I've thrown out better meat and couldn't bare to eat it. The quality control is obviously nonexistent. Even the salad fixings were dubious. The menu advertised dates, corn, and peppers, but what was there was more like the bits you'd find at the bottom of a dirty produce drawer. When asked how things were, I couldn't even fake a "Fine" or "Good". Instead, what came out was an exasperated "Okay". That seemed good enough for the waiter, and he walked away. We were famished, so my friend ate what she could, I ate some lettuce leaves, we paid for our horrible meal, and left to find comfort in the nearest taco establishment. Regrettably, I can't even bring myself to think about going there for just a drink, as the thought of giving them more of my money makes me feel bad about myself. read more

Came here for an afternoon snack. Service was ok considering it was one man serving and cooking for the entire pub the time we were here (it was pretty busy for one guy...probably about 10-12 people). It is awkward coming in at first because you don't know whether to seat yourself or to wait - I am still unsure if we could seat ourselves or just wait. The table we picked was sticky and you can still smell the cologne of whoever was sitting there previously...not sure if it was from last night or just before us. There is an oven behind the bar which some of the food is made (like an oven you would find in your own kitchen). However, the nachos for the table beside us looked quite decent and was a good portion. We each ordered a quesadilla which was pretty delicious - it had the right amount of seasoning and a good portion of filling. The only thing we found disappointing was that you have to pay an extra $0.75 for sour cream. What kind of special sour cream do they serve here anyway that we have to pay extra for it? I have never been to a place that charges sour cream when you order a quesadilla - it always just comes hand in hand with the salsa. Having said that, a generous helping of salsa does come with your order in a mason jar. Not sure we would come back here because it was such an awkward environment (sticky tables and strange smells included). read more

The Brighton - the first (non-sports bar) proper pub on the east end of Hastings - is a promising start for a neighborhood in the midst if a revitalization. However, the pub has a few things to work on. First, the good: outstanding scotch selection, Classic British Pub decor, solid local beer selection on tap, and a promising menu with items like risotto balls, a sausage platter, and BBQ chicken sandwich. The not so good: questionable service ("I don't bar tend", "hang on a minute while I load the dishwasher") and lack of a deep-fryer. Looking forward to a return visit, and hopefully a few small improvements. read more

I highly recommend the bangers and mash! Your choice of one of three daily sausages from a local favorite Falconetti's, garlic and peppercorn mash potatoes covered with a delicious stout gravy! Yay! Our 'hood finally has another place to have a beer! This lil bar has a nice, warm vibe, I like the brick wall. I love that they serve Falconetti's sausages, yum! They do a nice job with what they can for not having a "kitchen". . I am happy to say it is has great service so far. Refreshing! Not having to walk far from home is such a treat as I am used to having to commute to other neighbourhood's for a drink. :( I was extremely excited to see this pub opening up in our neighbourhood, hoping it would continue the great upswing of local quality booze 'n' grub Hastings-Sunrise joints like Tacofino, the Roundel, Red Wagon, and Campagnolo Roma... and maybe offer an upscale alternative to the Slocan, much as I also like that place at times. The Brighton has all of the pieces to be AMAZING (location, name, signage, supposedly local food, excellent beer and spirits list), but like a jig saw puzzle dumped from a box and left on the table in a pile, this place needs to put the pieces together... and FAST... because word-of-mouth rep in this neighbourhood is absolutely essential. WE WANT TO LOVE YOU! My experience: 1) We waited too long for the servers to greet us or offer us menus (we wanted to eat) until I had to get up to get the menus myself. We wanted to welcome the Brighton to the neighbourhood but didn't feel welcomed into the bar. Strike one. 2) The food we ordered was a tasteless disaster. The Sunrise Salad was described as having dates, cucumber, and red peppers. What we got was a small bowl of just greens with stale crunchy noodles on top. Hesitantly and politely, we enquired upon the whereabouts of the other ingredients. The server apologetically brought over the stainless steel salad bowl with the tongs and fished around for the missing ingredients right at our table, plopping a few of them into our salad dish with the tongs. Unprofessional and embarrassing. Strike two. 3) The chicken quesadilla I ordered was sadly uninspired. Again, the menu boasted what this item did not contain. I couldn't taste the cheese or the chicken, which was supposedly bbq'd. When I did find chicken, there was no bbq sauce to be seen or tasted. Strike three. Look, I get that this is a bar and that the food may be secondary to the booze, and that they don't have a kitchen but rather prepare it behind the bar, but if you offer a menu food shouldn't be secondary. There is an ancient history of "pub food" that provides comfort and satisfaction on a cold winter's night. If the service had been more welcoming or accommodating, it would have been easier to look past the food, but the servers didn't even seem to know the ingredients of the dishes they were creating. HERE'S THE DEAL: SERVICE IS KEY IN THE SERVICE INDUSTRY! If you're looking for a bottle of local beer or a glass of whiskey, a night out for a few drinks in Hastings-Sunrise, do check out the Brighton. Just skip the food. :) read more

This is a great new bar in our neighbourhood and I highly recommend checking it out. The food offerings such as sausages are sourced from the local merchants such as Ugo and Joe's. The daily specials for drinks makes it affordable. Staff are friendly and efficient. It is also cozy. Only down side is that the tables are still off-gassing from being recently varnished. But that will fade in time no doubt. Looking forward to my next visit! read more

I went here a few months back because I got excited that there was a new pub in the neighborhood. When we came in, we grabbed a table by the window, in plain sight of the waitress/bartender. However, it still took her over 6 minutes to come to us despite her not serving anyone else. They didn't serve any special cocktails, she said it was just a whiskey and beer kind of place. That was fine, we ordered beer. Now this is where it got great. After a few minutes, we noticed she was just washing some glasses, but not getting our beer. She started talking to her friends. Still no beer. Then she poured out whiskey/tequila shots for her and her friends. Still no beer. We waited about 12 or so minutes to realize she either completely forgot about us (despite being 6 feet away from her) or she just wanted us to go away so she could hang out with her friends. Great atmosphere, feels like a genuine pub. The only problem is the price, a sleeve (not a pint) is nearly 6 bucks for most or higher, before tax and tip. If it were a pint that would be fair bit for a sleeve that's way too much. Daily specials are 3.99 but just 14oz. Food is good and fairly priced. Charging station for phones. Patio out back!
