I feel like this is an apothecary turned coffee and pastry shop! From the street, this shop looks closed but I assure you they are open and, amazingly, until 3am for all your late night study and hang out sessions. Their creative coffees - think caffeinated drinks + oolong or lavender pizazz - are a sensory delight, and the libations are then amplified by the shop's vibe that seems to wink and whisper, "you obviously are in the know". To top it off, The Bun Shop is in Mt. Vernon, which is my favorite slice of Baltimore - consignment shops, hip boutiques, global cuisine, liberal flare, and gorgeous architecture make for a lovely day of strolling. Regarding COVID, staff encourage social distancing, but there are no rules verbalized or posted. I love coming here, especially during late nights. The aesthetic of this place is award-winning! I applaud The Bun Shop for staying open so late, because it's rare for cafes to stay open past 9 PM these days. The all-nighter folks still need a spot to go and The Bun Shop is a perfect spot since they close at 3 AM. You can indulge in some light people-watching, play some games (provided by the cafe), possibly read a book (for pleasure-- shocking!), or buckle down and do some work like the majority of those at the cafe. My boyfriend and I enjoy coming here when we're bored out of our minds, but don't want to sleep quite yet. The Bun Shop is an epitome of the many small charms within Charm City. I came here this morning to catch up with a friend I hadn't seen in a while, and the industrial-chic mixed with Victorian design gave this place a homey feeling. A lot of people come here to study/work, which I've done in the past, but I think the lack of lighting makes it difficult to work. The food here is excellent. I got the cheese and onion arrow and thought the carmelized onions complemented well with the salty cheese and flaky pastry. The buns were small and served extra hot on wax paper, so do not expect to get a meal out of it. The shop also serves coffee. I got the Vietnamese coffee, which I thought was a tad too sweet but still a delight. All in all, I love the Bun Shop. Come to experience one of the many charms within Charm City! read more

Welcome to Hipster Central! My friend and I stopped in here to grab her and I some stuff to nosh on while we hung out. This was located near her air bnb and she had bookmarked it to try. She loved it, whereas, I wasn't thoroughly impressed. I felt it was kind of pricey and limited for what you got. They offer scones, drinks, muffins, and some savory items. The space is fairly large and offers plenty of seating for you to work on your computer or to read a book or simply enjoy your tea and scone. My friend loved it and dined here a couple of times over the course of her visit to Baltimore for 5 days. I am glad this appeals to so many. It is locally owned and encourages locally bought. Had a breakfast bun that was literally breakest food inside of a bun, could've used some more seasoning on the inside but neat idea. Stopped in here the other day and only got a hot chocolate since it was very cold outside but it's a really nice space and their namesake buns look really good. This place was pretty disappointing. Although the space is beautiful, the customer service was terrible. The website makes it seem like they have 30+ types of buns and desserts. When I arrived there were only 6 options. The display was covered in flies and gross to look at. I asked if they had vegan options to which a girl replied, "Just what you see in the display". My tea was watery and lacking flavor and the women there were not nice or friendly. When I needed to know the WiFi password, the women were in a back room playing on their phones, and didn't respond to my call. I had to ask another customer for the password. Not to mention the internet connectivity was non existent. I won't be going back. read more

This was a nice a cozy place, great for work! I came one weekend to do work with a couple of friends and it had a nice, welcoming atmosphere. There were plenty of outlets, extension cords, and seating for customers to enjoy a stay in the cafe. There is available free street parking outside of the cafe as well. Several things disappointed me, which reduced one of the stars for the rating. I try to make it a point to only compliment food, however, these things added up. I ordered the hot matcha latte and was disappointed because there were CLUMPS of matcha powder not mixed in. Every time I went for a sip, there was an unmelted clump, all the way until the very end of the cup. It seemed the staff didn't melt, shake, or stir the drink enough. I never return my drinks or food as a rule, which is my fault that I didn't tell the staff to redo my drink. Just a head's up to notify your staff if this happens to you, because the bitter powder did not do the drink justice. It had the potential to be AMAZING. The front door does not shut on its own, even though there is a sign to completely shut the door behind you right on the door. Every time a new customer walked in and forgot to shut the door, a cold draft would blow in. I got up numerous times to fully shut the door. After a while, it became hilarious and my friend and I would take turns getting up to close the door. A head's up to future customers to shut the door. Sometime in the afternoon, the toilet clogged up, so no restroom was available. However, the drinks and the menu items are delicious and I would like to come back to try more of the pastries! They seem a bit pricey for the portion sizes, however, they are unique and cannot be offered anywhere else. Will update this review once I revisit! read more

I used to love this café, but the pandemic seems to have degraded its quality enormously. I ordered a Vietnamese coffee today and got a gigantic watery latte. No condensed milk, and a huge amount of weak coffee further diluting the espresso. I explained the problem to the barista, and he kindly made it again...the exact same way. As far as I can see, he's pouring regular 2% milk in. He has no idea what a Vietnamese coffee looks like or tastes like. This used to be a signature drink of the Bun Shop! Either the quality of the staff has plummeted, or the café simply is lying to its own staff and customers about what supplies it can stock. Either way, I'm not coming back for a while. read more

My friend and I ordered the matcha latte and a chai tea. Her latte was chunky textured and my chai tea tasted off- I asked the barista if it actually was chai because it just tasted like english breakfast, but he said no, that's how it's supposed to be. But I cannot over emphasize that it did NOT taste remotely like one would expect and if it was chai, was the worst chai I've ever had. Neither of us even made a dent in our drinks and had to throw them away. I'm still giving 3 stars for the spacious room, the plentiful seating, comfortable atmosphere, and byob policy (according to the reviews). Service was quick and polite but it wasn't very busy either. Next time I would bring a bottle of wine and just try a pastry instead of getting the coffee/tea. Just don't order the matcha latte or chai! read more

This has become a regular spot for me if I need to get work done later in the day/night. The fact that they open until 3 am has got to be the biggest selling point and probably the reason they get 4 (and not 3) stars. Their buns are great but sometimes the flavor of the stuffing is lacking. Their drinks are an absolute delight with some being a little tooo sweet. My favorite is the Paris tea latte which now is my only order. Like some other reviews, the dim lighting can be a problem but I tend to work on my computer so it's not an issue. I really enjoy the vibe of this place - if I lived in the area I would totally come here regularly just to sip coffee while reading or doing work. I was looking for a study location that has large tables and a cozy environment. The Bun Shop is it! The location and staff give off welcoming vibes, and it's really nice to be able to get a little snack and coffee/tea as a mid-study break without having to pack up all my things and moving to a new location. There are plenty of outlets via extension cords at this location. The bathroom is clean too. There is always a good variety of pastries - both sweet and savory, with vegan friendly options. Can't believe I am just getting to review the Bun Shop now! Crazy, because it's my favorite late-night spot to work at in Baltimore. This cafe is certainly not for everyone. It's always dimly lit, and definitely has a medieval vibe to it. In the least creepy way possible. They serve strong, but smooth coffee, the cappuccino being my favorite. They also always have pastries to choose from. One of my favorite parts about the cafe is the fact that they have games! This place was so broken down and smelly. My fiancé got the matcha latte that tasted like fish. We researched it before we brought it to someone's attention. Turns out when matcha tastes fishy it is denatured due to the product not being stored properly. So they served us spoiled matcha. The disgusting breakfast bun was served burnt but freeze burnt on the inside. The concoction on the inside literally looked like vomit. A bunch of random food partially digested and packed in a spoiled basic bun. My latte with condensed milk was only half decent because I probably couldn't taste the spoiled milk. Hardly tasted coffee in it. Their furniture is falling apart. They are aware because they use shitty cardboard on the edges of their benches to keep the metal edges from cutting people. Well as I went to sit the metal caught on my jeans and ripped a hole in it. This place was disgusting. I'm sure it'll shut down soon. Yet again local yelpers come through with a hidden gem. This morning started out crappy because I missed my 8:00 bus to NYC (literally 3 minutes late and watched it drive off) Soooo I checked Yelp for a breakfast spot in the area because naturally coffee cures most of my bad moods. I chose the bun shop mostly because I liked the name and I was already parked 6 minutes walking distance. From the outside it looked closed because its petty dimly lit inside. I only knew that it was open after someone walked out with a coffee in hand. It's super hipster-eqsue with eclectic furniture painted brick walls and golden beams lining the ceiling. There's a piano in one corner and a couch on the back wall soaking up sunlight from an old opaque window. It's got a super chill vibe perfect for work or studying. We sat and played chess over 2 honey macchiatos and a runza (which was sooooo good) If I'm ever in the historic mount Vernon district again I will definitely have a place to stop for coffee and a game of chess. read more

I'd heard good things about the Bun Shop when I lived in DC and was pleased to find out that there was one just a few blocks from my Mt. Vernon Airbnb on a recent trip to Baltimore. The exterior window with the sparkling gold logo is lovely and welcoming. The shop is near transit, but you wouldn't know it from the calm and peaceful interior. I wish I'd had time to sit and enjoy some tea and my food there, but I had a plane to catch. Some folks have mentioned a truncated menu and there were only a half dozen options on the Monday morning I visited. However, there were both meat and veggie options and I felt there was a good variety from which to chose. I decided on the cheese and onion arrow and the Rotiboy. The caramelized onions in the arrow were a luscious and sweet compliment to the slightly salty cheese and buttery, flaky pastry. The Rotiboy was an interesting combo of a soft bun (almost like brioche) with a crispy vanilla-like shell and a unique filling that I found appealing. I would definitely have both again. I wish I'd have photographed these gorgeous pasties before I had them bagged up to go. They were truly gorgeous before they spent time in my luggage. Eclectic & cozy little cafe, but not my favorite place to study. I knew it was gonna be dark inside, but the dimness made it seem more like it was setting the mood for just a late night hipster gathering spot. I wouldn't have considered it to be a popular study space, but the place was PACKED on a Sunday night (and it was Superbowl Sunday too!!). IT can get pretty loud, with so many people, even if everyone is doing work. The furniture was a little worn down, but there were a lot of outlets and even the small tables were big enough for our laptops. The Chicken Pasty was my favorite bun, with a perfectly flakey crust and filling that reminds me of the Vietnamese banh pate chaud!! I'm not sure I'll be back here to study, unless I need a late night place to go to when the library closes, but I definitely want to try more of their food and drinks. read more

I don't find myself in Mount Vernon nearly as often as I'd like. There are so many cute coffee shops serving delicious food that I'm missing out on. On a recent Saturday, a friend and I explored Graffiti Alley in Station North and on the way back to my apartment we were both a little hungry. Because it was mid-afternoon, we were in the mood for something small to hold us over until dinner. I remembered hearing about The Bun Shop which specializes in sweet and savory pastries from all over the world as well as Vietnamese coffee. This sounded like the perfect spot for our midday snack and we headed over. When we walked in, we were greeted with a pastry case that displayed the buns of the day. They all looked awesome. My friend opted for a savory bun and ordered the Chicken Pasty. This was a Brittish bun, served warm, filled with shredded chicken, potatoes, peas, and carrots in a celery cream sauce. I've never had a pasty before so I wasn't exactly sure what to expect but it was awesome. It was similar to a handheld chicken pot pie. I was in the mood for something sweet so I ordered the Rotiboy, which was the only sweet pastry The Bun Shop was offering when we visited. The rotiboy was a Malaysian sweet & salty roll with an espresso vanilla shell. The only way I could describe this dish to my friend was that it tasted like a warm hug. It was incredibly comforting, the bun was soft and only slightly salty with plenty of vanilla flavor throughout. But the best part was the warm center which had a little bit of melted butter. I was excited to try out The Bun Shop while I was in B-more. They've been around since '12, and they serve up different types of 'buns' - the buns themselves are more of a flaky 'pastry' style, which most of their offerings have the flaky phyllo exterior - very light, extremely flaky, and a little more on the greasier side. They offer 8 different types on a daily basis and seem to bake it fresh in their kitchen. I tried the Mushroom Tart (definitely for the mushroom lover, this had a generous amount of portobello mushroom in a very light sauce that accentuated the flavors of the shroom), Ham & Gruyere (my favorite out of the 4 as the little pieces of ham on the corners had a nice crisp and the gruyere cheese complemented the ham very well), Beef Pasty (this was just okay, as the fillings did not seem to be kept well inside the very light phyllo dough - it was also more on the bland side), and the Rotiboy (I was not a fan of this, as there was some type of a weird paste within and it had more of a 'perfume-ish' type of a taste to it). The guy who served them up heated the 'buns' up was friendly, professional, and efficient. This was such a cute spot! They got tons of cool points for ambiance and originality!! Almost everyone was on their computers and the lights were dim so the screens twinkled a bit!! They lost some cool points for lack of selection. So it seems as though each day they have 6 to 7 "bun choices" on the menu...bun as in anything wrapped in bread. I was disappointed after reading the past yelp reviews because I expected some Asian sticky buns or maybe a Cuban empañada....but instead there were garlic sticks, quiche, ham and cheese croissant... that was about it. It seemed more like a Au Bon Pain! However I'm sure (because I read pervious reviews and I trust ALL yelpers) it was a not so good evening. Btw....I did arrive around 6pm. Finally got to try it. I was expecting a huge variety of sweet and savory options, but instead there were only about 8. I opted for the ham and guerye pastry which I ate on the go and didn't get to photograph. It was fine. Very flaky crust, a light creamy sauce (like bechamel)and hint of thyme. Any it was good and $4.19 after tax. About the establishment, it's far bigger on the inside than expected. It was filled with folks on their laptops and chatting (quietly) amongst themselves. The Bun Shop is a cute, hipster coffee shop in Mount Vernon. The late night hours make it a perfect place to study or to grab a bite after a night at the bars. They also have a bunch of board games for you to use. Inside it has a great vibe. The seating is eclectic -- there's couches, small tables, armchairs, and long bench tables. And the music is not too loud to distract you from your work. I probably wouldn't come here to hardcore study, just because it can get crowded and get a little loud, but if you have some relaxed work to get done then the Bun Shop is perfect. The buns change daily, but they always have sweet and savory options. Hard to say which one is my absolute favorite, but I really like the feta and cheese bun, the ham and gruyere, and the chicken pasty. And you HAVE to try the Vietnamese iced coffee! Cute Brooklyn-sque pastry shop that officially opened today (4/8), The Bun Shop sells buns and puffs world-inspired. My one curry puff was enough to sate my lunch-time hunger, although if you're hungry, you'll probably need at least 2 items. Beautiful airy interior, with plenty of seating for groups or individuals. An easy 4 stars for a great addition to the Mount Vernon neighborhood. I'm looking forward to seeing this place get more and more popular. I also hope they decide to branch out into more than just pastries. Located right next to the Beatnik Barbershop (my place to get my 'do), there's usually plenty of street parking. Thanks yelp! I went here because of the reviews. I would have never known it was there. I took my 2 boys after school. They had the ham and cheese and the onion and cheese. I had the vegan curry pastry. All of them were fantastic! The curry was so filling! It was sweet and a little spicy. My boys loved theirs as well. My oldest liked the ham and cheese so much he had a second. Then we had the dirtiboi (think that's right) a chocolate roll. It was like a cinnamon roll with chocolate but not too heavy and sweet.
