Looks like this place finally opened and all the hype was definitely not misplaced. My friend was super psyched about this place and told me about The Bun Shop. I became just as psyched when I entered into the premises of their location. This place is the real deal. This is what I call real eatery innovation. Buns... all different kinds. Some small, some large, some round, some long, some sweet, some salty, and some more to come. Fine... I'll give a little more description. Just a little, because you need to go and find out the rest. The Bun Shop offers patrons a variety of ethnic buns/pastries and some just novel fusion inventions. There's Korean delicacies as well as Turkish delights, Cuban sweets as well as Indian goodies. All different kinds, and all absolutely fantastic. The cafe itself is pretty hipster and rustic. It's got the nice urban, alternative feel. Very inviting and very fun. The Bun Shop is polarizing. On one hand, it's eclectic in all the right ways. On the other hand, you might not like what the have to offer. Probably the most stand-out thing about the Bun Shop is the awesome decor - it's a sort of strange mix of industrial design and a dark Victorian look. It's intoxicating and I love every bit of it. The space feels cavernous and somewhat empty, but I think that adds to a sort of strange appeal. The buns are, frankly, polarizing. The "Dirtyboy" - a salty chocolate bun - was good, but not exactly as sweet as one might have originally imagined or wanted. The chicken curry puff was similarly good-but-unexpected. I can see all of the buns offered being easily hated or loved, depending on one's tolerance for strange flavor combinations. The Vietnamese Iced Coffee is pretty good, especially considering how unexpected it is to find something like it in a small bun shop in the middle of Baltimore. I strongly recommend this as a sort of snack joint, rather than a traditional "bun-for-breakfast" joint. My girlfriend and I dropped by The Bun Shop before attending an event nearby. The ambiance at The Bun Shop was akin to a forgotten attic; dusty, dimly lit, and full of dilapidated furniture. Cleanliness was an issue. The trashcans, both by the bar and in the bathroom, were overflowing with an assortment of garbage and single use items. Cobwebs, long since vacant, were visible in several corners and most surfaces, bric-a-brac and plants were covered in dust. The 'menu' amounted to eight dough-based offerings displayed behind glass. The lack of light made it difficult to see what you were ordering let alone read the descriptions. Despite our reservations we ordered a: Chicken Pasty, Mushroom Tart, Rotiboy, and Espresso. Overall the food was underwhelming and uninspired. The Mushroom Tart ate very salty and although the crust was light, it was very oily. The mushrooms on top were almost burnt with the texture of jerky and the feta overwhelmed the other ingredients. The Chicken Pasty tasted like mediocre chicken soup in a greasy bun. The Rotiboy was chewy with a soggy, salty center. If it was supposed to be custard filling then it had been absorbed by the dough. The topping was crisp and sweet, but once again, the dish left an oily residue on fingers, [plastic] utensils and wrapper. The espresso was surprisingly good; caramel-colored crema, subtle fruit notes and a smooth finish. All in all a lackluster experience. read more

Somehow manages to be comfortable without being either too sterile or to hippyish. Long tables and large tiles on floor give it a slightly castle-ish feel. Although the beams in the ceiling are metal, not wood. Amazing pasties, both sweet and savory. I say pasties, not pastries, because they are the British style, with the super flaky but not buttery crust. I would not be surprised if lard were an ingredient in the pastry - which is fine with me! The Bun Shop (surprise!) is also a coffee shop, with plenty of tables. The afternoon I went there was also an acoustic band - with a banjo! I was planning on just getting some takeout (assumed a counter and no seating) but I hung out for about an hour, ate almost all of my pastry and had a cup of tea. This place could veer towards pretension and doucheyness but somehow remains sweet. I really liked The Bun Shop and could spend a lot of time here. Even comfortably writing, which I find impossible at most coffee shops, due to uncomfortable seating, tables too close together and just an air of "eh, I want to leave this place". None of that is present at The Bun Shop. All of the MANY pastries I tried were great. Loved that they had guava and cheese. Haven't had that since I left Miami - where they used to sell it at Starbucks, of all places. Trust me, this was a lot better! The only pastry I didn't like was the spinach and feta, and that was because it was loaded with garlic. And I detest garlic. So I guess next time I will ask before ordering. Seriously, everything here is delicious. You just can't go wrong with pastry stuffed goodness and try make it with such penache and creativity! I mean the dirtiboy has salted dark chocolate ganache in an espresso vanilla shell and don't get me started on the seasonal delicacies. Okay, okay you twisted my arm. This season they have a sweet pumpkin braid with spiced pumpkin filling braided together with cream cheese. If you were wondering what fall tasted like...you can take a bite! I absolutely love this place for work meetings or just random get togethers...the background music is always just enough and doesn't hinder your concentration or conversations and everyone is so courteous and respectful. Soo, it's Memorial day, and I don't have to work! Woop! What can be better than trying out a new cafe? Well at least it is new to me, ya know? Relatively easy to spot on Read Street, as soon as you cross the tracks, and POW! BOOM! There it is. Metered, street parking is available of course. From the outside, the shop looks quite inviting. I love the interior, there is a plethora of seating, but get this, it is all quite different, from couches, tables/chairs, to looonnng benches to whatever else you can think of. It is quite homey, I think this the perfect place to get some work done or to come and read a book (like me). Once inside, there is a case of the buns of the day...they have sweet, savory, and veggie. Since I'm a newbie, I had no idea what to try, but everything looked sooo good! On this date, I tried one of the savory buns, the Ranza which had beef, sauerkraut, and dijon. I must admit I was a bit skeptical with that combination, as I'm really not a fan of the dijon, but the server assured me that it wasn't overpowering, but somewhat like a steak and cheese. I also got a cafe mocha. The service was quick on this date, your bun comes wrapped up, they have plastic ware if needed. First things first, the bun itself was delicious! Had I just had that by itself, I would have been happy. It was warm, buttery and FRESH! The seasoning added a great flavor. Upon getting to the interior, that too was great. The server was right, the flavors mixed lovely, and nothing was too overpowering. It did kind of remind me of a steak sandwich, but on a completely different level. I came in here after searching for "dessert" on yelp in the area. It was the first place listed. I walked in and there was a very relaxed and chill ambience. Dim lighting and very quiet, a great place to get some work done if you need to. I got a berry pocket and my friend got a berry pocket and roti boy. I was absolutely floored at how delicious the berry pocket was. They warmed it up for me and every bite I took was an experience, fruit and cheese yummmm. I tasted my friends roti boy and it was was good but I didn't know it had coffee in it (I don't like coffee) and I still enjoyed it. I actually went back to buy another berry pocket and they were in the oven and I was in a rush so I couldn't wait. I live maybe 40 mins away from this spot but I'll most likely come back JUST for the berry pocket. I'm not a coffee drinker so I can't speak on the coffee. Re-review time! It's been quite a while since my husband and I popped into the Bun Shop, and that's definitely been our mistake, as they've grown quite popular over the last couple of years. Maybe a bit TOO popular - there weren't any seats to be found when we got there, which was a bit of an annoyance. All of our old favorites were there, including something new called the "Dirtiboy", which appears to be a sweet take on the butter-flavored Rotiboy; we both decided on this and I added the cheese and onion arrow, since that seemed to be my favorite the last time I was here. And, of course, one of their outstanding Vietnamese coffees, which was as usual - nice and strong, and it didn't disappoint in the least. It was certainly welcome on a cold night! The cheese and onion arrow was TERRIFIC, as per usual. If anything, I think it was even better this time around, as there was much more onion flavor than before. The "Dirtiboy" was interesting - it had chocolate ganache baked into the dough, and it kind of reminded me of a big cinnamon roll without the cinnamon. It was delicious, but VERY, very sweet - in truth, just this and the coffee would have been more than enough, as there is taste overload with this selection. They've added a few new things, such as Nutella-baked cookies (be still my beating heart) and a much-expanded drink menu to include lots of herbal tea and other coffee drinks. Decor remains the same - low lights, minimalist furnishings, big empty spaces. They have a selection of board games in the corner that you and friends could partake of, encouraging you to stay a while - and that's fine, except that it adds to the general difficulty of finding a seat in the place. Went to the The BUN shop to meet up with my cousin. Due to the humidity, I was drinking more than my normal amount of water. I asked the young man at the counter if I could you the restroom, he stated that I would have to buy something in order to get the code for the restroom. Long story short, I had to go really bad and ended up walking to one of the local restaurants in the neighborhood to use the restroom. Before I could even make it all the way in the stall, I ended up having an small accident on myself. Phenomenal spot to get work done or read, especially now that their hours are back to what they were before the pandemic. I also like that they have a piano. The staff are all so nice and respectful and the coffee is delicious. The clientele trends younger and it's next to a hospital so lots of doctors, nurses and medical students passing through. Occasionally a panhandler will sneak in but the staff are generally pretty good at dealing with that kind of thing. The wifi can be spotty when things are busy but most days I haven't had any problems. They also have several outlets and extension cords spread throughout the space. My only real criticism is that the tables can be a little wobbly but it's nothing a few napkins can't fix. OK... call me a grandma but this place is too dark to do work! After staring at my comp in the dark, my eyes hurt. I can see if you come during the day, it would be alright because they have large windows but I've only come at night and the lights are annoyingly hipsterly-dim. Got the honey caffe macchiato and it was too sweet for my taste. (Yeah, yeah, yeah... I'm a grandma), I know that it had honey in it but it had too much or something. Also, was not hot enough IMO. The pastries in the front looked not so appetizing with flies all over it but I noticed they had a fresh batch come out of the oven and it smelled pretty good so I got the spinach feta. The crust was deliciously buttery and flakey and definitely didn't taste healthy for you but my taste buds thoroughly enjoyed. This place does get crowded with students and finding an open spot can be tricky. They have a couple of long tables where a lot of people can share but even those can fill up fast. I do like the music and vibe in here. They also have some board games. You need a key to go to the bathroom that is connected to a big clunky cup. Stopped in for a post-symphony warm beverage with some friends. Really nice atmosphere, lots of people chatting quietly and working. I ordered a tea latte with lavender tea and almond milk, and my friends had a hot chamomile tea and a hot thai tea latte, both of which they enjoyed. The lavender tea latte was nice, although I was expecting it to be a bit sweeter (but I could easily have added sugar myself). Also had a chocolate chip nutella cookie which they warmed up - really tasty! Only rating 4 stars because the heat wasn't turned on! Might have been broken? The Bun Shop is one of my favorite study spots in Baltimore - it has such a calming atmosphere with vintage yet hipster vibe. My friends and I come here every Sunday to study. Not only is it a productive environment for studying, but it also has delicious buns and teas/coffees, which make for the perfect study break. They have a mix of sweet and savory buns - the dirtiboy and chicken pasty are two of my favorites. And the Iced Vietnamese Coffee is a must try! In addition to delicious food and drinks, the Bun Shop has a good selection of board games, comfy couches, and a piano as well. It does get pretty cold in the winter so make sure to bring a warm sweater. Whether you want to do work, catch up with old or new friends or eavesdrop on random strangers' conversations, the Bun Shop is the perfect place. It also closes at 3 am. While I have never stayed there that late to study, it's nice to know that I would have the option if needed. In fact, it closes later than my school library. LOVE love love The Bun Shop! First of all, can this please be my living room? It's eclectic and homey, modern and vintage all at once. I love the attention to detail from the terrariums to the agate slice coasters. Second, as someone who constantly has a difficult time making up her mind (which you think would be easier given that I don't eat meat), I like that they keep it simple here. If you are going to the bun shop, you are going to have a bun (of sorts- perhaps a twist) but there's no menu in front of you. What you see is what you can get (plus drinks). They keep the choices limited, but execute it all perfectly. Third, I love any place that has strong iced coffee and diet root beer as beverage options. Plus,you can BYOB. My boyfriend would like to add that the pork bun was incredibly soft and doughy, and that it was an interesting, entirely new scrumptious experience for his taste buds. Visited Mt. Vernon/Baltimore for a weekend for a wedding, and we were looking for a place to grab coffee and start the day. Found this little gem on Yelp, and it was delightful. Love the setup and feel of the place. It's definitely bigger than your normal café, but it has that laid-back, comfortable feel that makes you stay there and relax in the morning. There are also board games available! The food was great, as well. We went on a binge and decided to try a handful of stuff. We got the pizzaboy (like a cinnamon roll but pizza flavored lol), rotiboy (a sweet bun with a slightly salty filling but I couldn't figure out what it was, but still good!), and the ham & gruyere (ham and cheese + phyllo i believe...top-notch!) buns to eat and the Vietnamese iced coffee (not as strong compared to when you get it from a real Vietnamese store, but still pretty good) and the watermelon-coconut juice (made from real fruit!) to drink. Ok, so I've been to the Bun Shop twice now. It's definitely time to write a review. The shop is located a block away from my job. After reading the reviews I knew this was a place that I had to make an effort to stop by. I'm happy I did! The inside of this quaint gem is very dark with a quite welcoming feeling. It's an open space set with home style chairs, tables and couches. When you walk up to the counter if there is no one visible you ring a bell to summon service. On display are about 7-8 pasties ranging from sweet to savory. They have an awesome tea and coffee list that is sure to please most. I've tried the savory, which I can only describe as "pot pocket pies"!! They are dancing full of flavor and the surrounding pastry is always on point (I'm such a bread girl). Yesterday I did dabble into the sweet with a chocolate chip cookie filled with Nutella.....I WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD. I'm still thinking about it a day later. I'll be back Bun Shop..... read more

The Bun Shop serves up delicious cups of caffeinated drinks and lovely, warmed buttery savory and sweet pastries. Flaky pastries with scrumptious fillings, the favorites being the guava cheese flute and the ham and cheese. The rotiboy was good, but it wasn't very special for me, since I am used to getting similar asian breads frequently. It was really difficult to find any seating, as it is a coffeeshop with a lot of people on laptops, studying away. SX would argue it's too "hipster" for his tastes, but the Bun Shop would be a pretty nice to study with it's delicious drinks, pastries, and subdued coffeehouse music. Only 4 stars due to the lack of plates for all of the pastries, lack of clean seating, and lukewarm service (but, to be fair, there was only one barista server doing everything). Somebody had said it before send it is true: this place is not for everyone. I came here because of its proximity to my location and because it came highly recommended. Coming in you'll immediately know that this is not your run of the mill chain coffee shop. There is a baby grand piano - night sure it works though. The decor is best designed add steampunk part medieval style. The space is dark, walls are painted black and heritage light bulbs are primarily used. Menu is limited on the pastry section. Coffee and tea selection is good sized and inventive. Service is polite but slow and maybe even confused. The people behind me got served first before my single coffee order asked no apologies offered. Not even excuses. A five minute wait for a coffee, hmmmm.... there are a lot of other coffee shops in the area. Coffee needs some more roasting, there just no masking the weakness. Pastries were good. The Rotiboy was delicate and soooooo delicious. All in all it was an ok experience. But there was still something that made me take my coffee and leave. I guess it was just not my vibe. The most creative, unusual coffee shop I've seen. They specialize in buns and pastries in a great variety of combinations and cultural influences. The selection varies daily, although they almost always have a few of the same mainstays, like the rotiboy and the dirtiboy. My favorites have been the English-inspired beef pasty (shout out to harry potter!), empanadas, and one that had beef and sauerkraut that I forget the name of. They also have sweet variations such as guava and cheese twists, and a particularly delicious seasonal pumpkin braid. Every time I've been there they have something new. You can have one bun as a snack with coffee, or several as a meal. They also have extremely good coffee. The clientele is mainly student and young adult. It is a popular study location. They have very long hours- I think they only close from 3 am to 6 am. It can feel like being in a library. Cool decor, comfortable variety of seating, including couches, individual tables, and long communal tables. read more

The Bun Shop is one of my favorite coffee spots in Baltimore. The coffee is good, but the ambiance and hours are the best part. I've been here quite a few times now and each time has been great. I normally just grab a coffee or latte but I've had a pastry before and everything is always good. They have a spicy (Mexican) mocha that is delicious. I truly enjoy the ambiance here--it's very quiet and good for working, nice dim lighting, and a pretty hip feeling. The absolute best part is that they are open until 3am. Almost every coffee shop in the city closes so early I don't have a chance to do anything when I get off work. I like to come here to study and do work when necessary. Everyone looked so... cool... so... hip. THE VIBE: The atmosphere reminded me of a hipster collective that had sex with a botanist's private study. Rugged and gold, with apothecary jars, old couches, a piano and such. So lovely! LE FOOD: I had the bun that is sweet 'n salty with a white expresso shell-- the Rotiboy. SO GOOD! I paired it with an amazing green tea latte. My partner had the Runzo, which was filled with beef, sauerkraut, and mustard! DELISH and savory. They washed theirs down with an aloe lemonade, which was CHUNKY with aloe bits and ice-- just the way we like it! Don't expect to come here and feel full though. This is like a place to come for a bite and a good drink to wash down said bite. Snacky snack palate pleasers, not belly fillers. OVERALL: Expensive, certainly specialty, but worth the atmosphere. They also offer (as the name implies) a good selection of buns/pastries (~$5 ea) that are delicious. There is plenty of space in here to catch up with a friend or get work done. Word of caution, it is pretty dimly lit in here, so if you need bright lighting to get work done, maybe look elsewhere. This place has gone downhill unfortunately. When I first started going there, it had a cosy, cool coffee shop vibe, and I loved the antiques. But sadly it's been broken into several times (not the owners' fault, tough neighborhood) and I think they may have put away some of their cooler items. The food often has flies you can see through the window, and everything looks a little dirty. There's also fewer outlets and not many workers, and the internet connection blocks GoogleScholar. I will say, the workers are mostly pretty nice. But sometimes they really need to kick some people out. It reeked of weed the last time I came in, and a bunch of guys in wifebeaters were sitting on the couch, with no food, charging their phones on the one outlet by the wall. read more

I wasn't entirely sure what to expect based on the previous reviews. I was able to find a parking spot right in front. I can only describe it as a dark lair. There are benches with long tables, small tables with chairs, and a couch that has seen better days. For me, the setup was not comforting. I wasn't completely sure where to order or what was available to order. There is a bar with a few pastries on display. Behind the bar is a rack of buns and a coffee press. As I moved close to the cashier, I noticed a small menu placard on the bar. I decided on an Americano and a cheese and onion bun. The coffee was served extra hot. The bun was served on wax paper that did not hide the oil that was infused in this bun. It was certainly onion-y and the cheese was light. It was flaky and crispy. During my weekend trip to Baltimore, I stayed in Mount Vernon area. I was looking for a late night snack after drinking at The Brewer's Art and The Bun Shop was the perfect place. In my inebriated state, I devoured two buns. I believe i got the ham and Gruyere as well as the Guava and Cheese. Both tasted awesome, but you do have to take into account of my state of mind, and everything would have probably tasted awesome after a night of drinking. I would tell you not to expect gourmet, but The Bun Shop is definitely a good spot for a portable late night snack and/or a late night coffee. read more

I've been stopping into the Bun Shop for several years now. The atmosphere is interesting enough... folks sitting around on laptops doing homework, work projects, web surfing. Most times that I've been here, you have to jock for a seat and an outlet to charge your electronics. BS gets their caffeinated beverages right, with my favorite being the hot Thai tea. bun shop: just like my favorite record label, sub pop, it's not the best but it's pretty good, and by that i mean it's perfect. let me explain. encrusted with an ornate golden marquee, it sets high expectations. upon entering, you're met with your first paradox. a humble layer of grime and dust below gold-leafed beams. the place evokes a persistent but decaying glory common in baltimore. yet non of the dust and dirt detracts from your desire to be here. once you make it to the counter eventually an apathetic young barista will wait broodingly for you to engage them at which point you'll realize the charm and personality brimming from within. their selection of buns and coffees are also various, plentiful, and a sleeper hit. as far as coffee and baked goods go, i've had better, but i don't want better. everything is perfect but nothing is outstanding. so whether 3pm or 3 am, this humble, mellow, dingy, charming cell, will draw you in, keep you here, and keep you coming back. sure bun shop could improve, but if it did, it'd be much worse. read more

I went here about 2 years ago after hearing all kinds of wonderful things about it. I wasn't impressed at all. I had 3 it 4 different buns. Not sure if it's because I want too late or what but the buns were not so great. This appears to be a local hang out spot. A lot of folks using laptops and reading. Which is nice if you live nearby. This place is such a great find! Stumbled upon this place when it first opened through an friend and love it. They have great buns so I always end up buying way more than I should and eating them for days. I've also tried their earl gray cookie and it's so delicious! You can taste the tea flavor in the cookie. If you like Vietnamese coffee, definitely stop by for one. I usually ask for less condensed milk because I don't love super sweet things but it's great coffee. Finally love that this place is open late and has free wifi. I've finished many projects here because I needed an open space to finish my work. Lots of people complete their homework and work here so you won't be alone! read more

This place is so hip, it's awesome. I had a vietnamese coffee with a ham and cheese pastry. Both were incredibly delicious and not out of this world expensive. The woman at the register was also very kind and accommodating. They have sofas, community benches, and coffee tables. The wifi was fast enough to digital nomad for a couple of hours. The ambiance is so hip and awesome. Cool furniture and decals on the windows to give it a oldschool, grungey attitude. The bath room is lit with a life sized desk lamp. They also have games in the back like connect and jenga. Would definitely come back here again when I'm in Baltimore! read more

It's a pretty standard coffee shop in Baltimore, with the main attraction being that they're open until 3. The buns and pastries are ok, but there's not much selection if you're looking for something sweet. read more
